As someone who originally found your channel through buying guides back in the day, I'd say they are so good they still hold up. However, seeing all the new info here I would like to see updated guides, especially if you can focus more on all the other hardware, mini consoles, and even unique controllers that each system had. Show what makes a system feel unique, and a lot of that is unique games and controllers.
HEY!!! Another buying guide again, this takes me back i used to love these, it's been a while since we've seen one, it's great to see them back and i hope to see more, Rock On Metal Jesus :)
Great video. I never get tired of these Genesis videos. Such a nostalgic feeling. I still have my Genesis, and now I'll get to share it with my baby when she grows up. With so many Sega Yutubers, im surprised sega has never thought about making a comeback. Great memories about the Sega Channel it was $15 a month when i was in 7th grade.
This is a very strange but sudden exact timing, I just returned to the Genesis library and decided to replay and find hidden gems from my childhood and check MJR, and here John and the Buying Guide for Genesis are just right! It was very interesting to listen to Immortal and his passion for Sega and everything is very cool, but guys, we need update part 2 because there are so many cool games on Genesis that have not surpassed so far just a lot, from Earthworm Jim to Comix Zone, I noticed that the tastes for some reason, USA is very different from those who played SEGA in Europe and there are still a lot of games that you should tell people about, just do it and respect for such a video in the subject!
I'd love to see some updated guides especially if John's involved! I love you guys and when you do things together I get those old cross-over vibes like when 2 franchises come together. You should do some kind of Metal Jesus Rocks Vs. The Immortal John Hamcock style thing where in the end you come to work together. Maybe throw Reggie in there. It'd be fantastic. 😊 You guys rock!!! Game on!!! ❤
Datel is from the UK. I remember seeing Pro Action Replay codes in magazines, but not ever seeing any commercials for them. It's interesting that Interact had licensed and rebranded them as GameSharks for the PS1, Saturn, N64, DC, PS2, and GC.
Absolutely love my genesis and collection. Got the tower of power also and can’t wait to see John review the 1991 line up for Sega games for the genesis. Awesome work guys
Thank you for this. We had a Sega Channel growing up because my Mom worked for one of those Cable Companies. I had forgotten it's name and had yet to see it mentioned in Genesis videos, Thank you for bringing it back to me!
I’m so thankful for these videos. I started watching you in grade school before I even had a source of money to buy anything at all, and yet I watched every video regardless. I appreciate all the tips and history that come with your videos. In anticipation of getting my first dreamcast this weekend I’d like to say thank you for your content, personality in the retro gaming community, and personally growing up with your videos.
Man what a life you live. Got your passion and turned it basically in one of the main themes and sharing with all us jealous people :D By the way your Shivers 2 playthrough is constantly my background "noise" when I work on stuff. I would LOVE to see you do another Sierra game like Phantasmagoria etc. Either way keep rocking!
I’m so happy to see you doing this. I’ve been thinking it would be awesome for you to start doing buying guides again. Your old ones are evergreen, but some things do change. It would be great to see some updated takes!
Jason + John = Chemistry Great to see Hancock back on the Metal Jesus channel. Would love to see John and Jason sit around and talk about the old/retro days. Much like the video of Jason & D.M. Paul talking about Sierra. (A real hidden gem). Thanks again fellas.
Excellent rundown. I missed out on most of the Genesis library growing up since I was a Nintendo kid. Sonic and Streets of Rage were about the only games I had played on Genesis, so not only was I completely unfamiliar with all of your hidden gems, but even some of your recommended games! Getting to experience these for the first time is going to be a treat.
The Genesis was the gift that kept on giving, I had so many attachments for that system, the CD, the 32X, the menacer, the arcadestick, which was perfect for street fighter Turbo.
Glad to see you guys do a video together again! You definitely should do updated buying guides. Especially since you've moved since then and I like your new setup for this buying guide.
Great video as usual. Been long time viewer of your channel as well as johns. Its nice to watch videos like this from other fellow Washington residents. Born and raised in spokane. Thanks again for all you do and the great content.
Sega Channel cannot be understated. :) I had it for a couple years and it introduced me to so many games I still play today... Shining Force I & II, Landstalker, Phantasy Star II-IV, Gemfire, Pirates! Gold were just some of them. Every month 50 games were available including some exclusives not release in NA such as the Wily Wars.
We have a "new" version of the Mega Drive here in Brazil which was released in 2017 by the BR manufacturer TecToy. It's an old school kind of a console, it doesn't have HDMI outputs, only RCA, it runs cartridges and also has an SD card input (weird, isn't?). It came out with a lot of flaws, specially with the sound, since it doesn't has the original Yamaha soundboard chip, so it "emulates" it. After a while, a fan came up with the solution of his own, creating an homebrew operational system that makes it run pretty OK. I have one, it's a decent console to have (with the homebrew), I have the entire Genesis/Mega Drive library on it, good to have a quick play.
Great video! The Sega Genesis was the greatest console ever created. Took on Nintendo and won the battle of the consoles for a short stint of history! Note: That "4 Way Play" adapter was a piece of trash. My friends and I would play NBA Showdown '94 and it kept popping out of the console during gameplay! Great idea, poor connection to the console (in addition to short controller cords). Best to keep it sealed in package, Immortal John Hancock, lol. Cheers!
This feels like a channel 9 pbs breakdown of sega console options...and I mean that as an absolute compliment!!! Hope you're enjoying that beautiful fall in the puget sound!!!
@@MetalJesusRocks HELL YEAH I just got back from work, and you just dropped this gem that I've been waiting for ages for? Time to order a pizza, grab a beer and kick back and watch this awesome buying guide! SEGA! METAL JESUS ROCKS!

I love your old buing guides and ive watched them several times in my hunt for older games. And i would LOVE! to get new updated buing guides as well :D Always fun to hear you and your crew talk about games :D ! Rock on!
Don't think it was mentioned that the Power Base Converter does nothing more than connects the cartridge pins to the console, the Mega Drive/Genesis was built to run Master System games and because of this I have both a Mega Drive and Master System libraries on my Everdrive.
Yeah the Genesis has a Z80 inside so it basically has a built in SMS. One interesting thing the Power Base Converter does have is the card slot which allows peripherals like the 3D glasses to work on a Genesis.
I remember the first time i saw the model 1 Sega Genesis in a glass display case at Macy's wayyyy back in '89. I was a sega kid already having the master system so this thing was mind blowing. Later on that Christmas my parents surprised me with it. Great times with altered beasts and revenge of Shinobi.
I rented Jewel Master as a kid (with my own money!) and loved it because of the week I had gotten to spend with it one summer. I never hear people talk about it so I'm glad it's featured in this video!
Great video, thanks MJR and John! I love Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, collecting has become a bit expensive, but I recently scored an amazing 157 game haul so it’s still going strong. So fun to collect for, the Sega CD and 32X too.
8:41 the Hyperkin Mega Retron HD really is a great budget option for playing Genesis carts on HD TVs, and I think it will even work on CRTs with RCA cables.
I love seeing the Sega Channel adapter! My wife and I both had Sega Channel growing up and played it all the time. Tons of great memories using it over the years.
I have the Genesis Classics release on Switch, and should be having a Genesis coming via delivery in a week or two. This video was really helpful. I learned a lot about games. Thanks guys.

I love the sega genesis. Its such a product of its time with the add ons, but is also one of a kind. Love the sega genesis sound chip, and the aesthetic of the console as a whole.
Loved this Jason great video and liked you and John touching on the importance of clone systems and emulation as gaming not about filling shelves with unplayed games it's about enjoying the game the artwork and the community.
I'm in my 30's, growing up with the MD/Genesis was peak of my childhood, I've recently throughout the years began to get my collection back, including various SHMUP Titles. It's a joy!
Did you get rid of, lose and sale games through the years and regret it? Haha I sure did. Slowly collecting them back is so expensive but man some games are just classic.
greetings from germany. thank you very much for all your bying guides especially the hidden gems. the megadrive (so called in europe) was my childhood console. now i play sega games via emulator or sega megadrive mini - its fine for low budget.
Should we do Updated BUYING GUIDES for other classic systems? Which ones would you like to see?
I’d love to see an updated one for psp since you are looking to complete the collection. The 3ds I also think would be worth revisiting.
Neo Geo CD!
No need to do a buying guide when you're promoting emulation.
Maybe a racing rig guide? Also, an update for your retro HDMI consoles. I recently installed an HDMI in a DC and an N64.
YES! Please update those old buying guides!! There are a lot of new collectors that need help!
I think an update to older buying guides is a very good idea.
You could even expand them to include hardware mods.
Hardware mods is a fantastic idea! Especially since so many of them are reversible too 👍
