The Greek pantheon makes me cheer for Kratos, and the blood of a golden hind. -A woman is a better seamstress than a goddess? Turn her into a spider. -Lose a beauty contest because your competition offered a better bribe to the judge?Destroy the judge’s city and people. -Your brother-husband has affairs with human women? Torment the kids. -Trojan queen is a war captive and abused? Turn her into a dog. -Snatch a man’s wife away from him for the crime of him looking at her. Etc. Etc.
Meg might be one of my favorite characters in a disney film. She's quite a bit older and more mature than pretty much any disney character, and how she works past her cynicism is brilliant. It would have been great to have her and Herc spend more time together, but it comes down to budget and time then, doesn't it? I do find myself wishing the film was longer. "Won't say I'm in Love" is probably the most convincing Disney love-related song imo. It does a truly great job of expressing a rather complex feeling for a complex character.
As someone with autism, I can very much relate to the desire to be like others, to be able to understand people and be able to fit in. I remember coming home from school in tears over it a few times. In middle school, I stopped caring so much, but for a long time I was hugely bothered by how different I am. I still sometimes wish that I could have a brain that works properly, but I know that's impossible and I've learned to (mostly) live with it.
That's tough, buddy. I guess most people go through something like that during their teenage years, at least, to some degree. That's probably why this sentiment was so prevalent in the media aimed at children and teenagers. In Herc's case, though... he's a demigod. Kinda strange for him to be upset about being literally the strongest and toughest mofo around.
Was in a very similar situation. I got diagnosed pretty late and it helped me deal with it better. I was borderline suicidal at some points due to the social isolation
I believe it's actually in Woods' contract that they can never pick someone before him in casting for Hades in ANY future works of Hercules. That's how he's always Hades, he contractually has first dibs.
About the strangeness, you refer to at ca. 47:10 ,where the Gods lose hard vs the Titans, then Hercules shows up, then the gods win without a problem. There is another greek myth: The "Gigantomachy", not to be confused with the "Titanomachy". The Titanomachy is the myth of the battle of the greek gods vs the titans. There the greek gods usurp the rulership of the universe from them. The Gigantomachy is the myth of the "Gigantes" or giants, a later generation of children born of gaia and somebody (usually Uranos), who try to conquere the olymp and usurp the rule from the gods(Zeus, Poseidon, etc.). In this myth it is prophesied that the Giants are invincible until (the mortal, not a god jet) Heracles sets his foot on the battlefield of olympos itself and helps the gods. And that´s the think that happens: The greek gods lose hard, Hercles showse up, the giants lose there invincibility (i think it is described as incredible fast regeneration, but it is a myth so details may vary) and the greek gods win hard. There was more to the myth but this is the significant part for now. Something about the giant in greek myth/art is, that they get confused with the titans a lot, like a lot a lot. So yes this could just be another nod to the source material of Herakles, and given how often the Titans and Giants where confused they were just lumped together. ps. I could not finded this myth on wikipedia under the herkules article only under "Gigantomachy". So if you want to read up on it its there, just hard to find.
Fun facts : in the Swedish version Zeus was voiced by none other than Max von Sydow, and Hades was voiced by Dan Ekborg that also voiced the Genie in Aladdin .
My first GF *loved* this movie- specifically because Meg was a snarky badass and they actually dated rather than instawuv. It's got it's problems, but in the end it's a wonderful time and well worth it's place.
i rly enjoy this movie and when im thinking of the greek gods pantheon these are the ones that comes to mind. Btw i watched the tv series first the movie much later on
As a kid I really enjoyed this movie, but as an adult who spent time learning Greek mythology the changes to the original story bug me quite a bit. I mean seriously Zues not trying to sleep with every woman, Hera not trying to kill Heracles every chance she can, no mention of Heracles' massive anger management problem, and Hades being a villain
Easy answer for the Go the Distance thing: kids don't want to be "bullied" for being different and grown ups misconstrue that as their kids "just want to fit in". It's a systemic problem
I've met James Woods and he's unfathomably awesome, down to earth and based. And Hades is by far my favorite Disney 'villian'. In actual Greek Mythology Hades is more of a sympathetic character dealt a bad deck of cards while Zeus is the jerk and anything but the family man portrayed in this movie. 😂 Still a great film!
oh wow i just realized this is new. seems random but I'm glad. question, why does disney always try to make movies on the cheap? i know theyre a company trying to max profits but cmon, its what they do!
So the gods' battle with the titans could've been made so much better if they'd just been unprepared for the assault the first time and got jumped by their enemies, and the second time had a chance to actively fight back. Such a shame. Good movie otherwise, though.
I wish I enjoyed this one more, since I wanted to see it since I was a kid. Hercules wanst enjoyable to follow and environments felt a bit cheap and less lively. But hades was fucking amazing and the girl was pretty cool. Oh and it had some of the worst disney songs yet

Speaking of Treasure Planet... I hope you get to it, it's my favourite Disney film. Sadly it's not really well know.
@Tesla-Effect TP is certainly not without flaw, but it's a great spin on the classic book into Disney's visual style and storytelling.
sadly for this batch Tarzan will be the last one.
About Herc's motives for belonging, it's not that he wants to be like everybody else, more like to be similar enough to be socially acceptable.
As someone with autism, I can very much relate to the desire to be like others, to be able to understand people and be able to fit in. I remember coming home from school in tears over it a few times. I knew a girl with autism, and she had very similar sentiments. Hopefully knowing that you are not alone like this, will help ya :

I did read that Vader comic. The woman in that story had so many issues. Key word being, had.

Ironically, Susan Egan does go on to play Belle in the stage version of Beauty and the Beast 😁
The question of why Phil stuck with him early on and that I could believe both is a testament to Danny Devito's acting.
There was a time when big time screen actors wouldn't do voices for cartoons. It was like slumming of something.
I wonder if they considered Patrick Stewart for Hades
They could have considered him for Zeus...

Yay, i was looking for something to watch on youtube, I enjoy your content.

At least that regardless of the mythological inaccuracy, it sparked your interest to research yourself.

I remember that Greece was fucking PISSED when this movie came out because of how it treated their...well, what used to be their religion.
Pls do a rumination on the clone wars season 7
Another excellent villain! The protagonist (aka Hercules) is a bit meh for me, but he's a certain improvement from his mythical counterpart.
What Darth Vader comic was he talking about?
I hope you ruminate on Mulholland Drive!!

From what I've heard and read, Michael Jordan was a total jerk lol he's a good example of 'don't meet your heroes'
oh wow i just realized this is new. seems random but I'm glad.

Apparently 1989 = "Early 80s"
....Oookay.
Insomnia = first to Ruminations, yay!!!

Do Hercules PS1 game
