- In this video, I give an ownership review of my 2011 Mercedes E63 AMG W212 sedan, which I recently bought. It's one of the best sounding AMGs and it has the legendary M156 V8 engine. I take the car for a quick drive as well as to a Mercedes show. (4K HDR) Shot on the new Panasonic S5 with Sigma Art 24-70 2.8.

The M156 is amazing but the M157 sounds just as good especially on start up it is mostly better.
I have an Facelifted w212 with the M157. People mistake it for a 2020 model 😂

Love how it still has the traditional Benz grill unlike the w212 fL model. It definitely seems very racy with the NA M156 and the 7G vs the dragster like E55.
Interesting that my S211 E55 has 4 zone climate and 4 rear air vents which unlike some 212 E63s.
if you keep the car long term I think your wallet will appreciate the lack of carbon ceramic brakes
Another option we didn’t have in the States is the Rest button on the AC which uses the residual heat from the engine to keep the car warm while it’s off. Convenient in the winter when you’re parked outside for a short period of time and plan on getting back into the car. We have the Max button instead in the US, which turns the cold at max speed.

Love your content and I am a C63 guy (2012) and these generation cars are so nice, from the noise to the driving dynamics, you can't beat them in my book - maybe not the most reliable engine with a few top end wear issues, but nothing normally catastrophic and worth it in my book.
Your video just reinvigorated my enthusiasm for my 2010. Mine is also fully optioned with perf. Pack and 19” wheels. Enjoy your car!

Regardless of what model you go for this generation E class, prefacelift W212 is just simply beautiful, and what I really like from this era of Mercedes is that all their AMG models were not trying to brag, they didn't try to look fast, just subtle and under the radar. Would be fun if an E63 had its badge changed to E200

OMG that exhaust note is phenomenal! Real metal exhaust tips too! I wrecked the tips on my current car because I tried using chrome cleaner on them and wound up with a bunch of pits in the plastic.

Fantastic quality video, E63 is remarkable vehicle.
This E63 (before the facelift) is still one of my all-time favorite designs. It was the last new Mercedes I know of to have the quad-headlamp look typical of the Mercedes brand I grew up with, but now infused with the new, edgier styling DNA being introduced at the time with models like the SLS.

Excellent video and congratulations on getting the car that you really wanted. 🎉 I remembered driving a Black 12’ E63 on a test drive at a dealership when I was thinking about buying one. Having mint condition 95’ E320 and 99’ SL 500 i was naturally interested… I was shocked that it acted like a true muscle car from the late 60’s and early 70’s but handled very well, seemed robust and sounded amazing it would blow past any car on the Hi-Way easily. Then got back to the dealership and was in awe looking at the interior… then found the Economy mode button was on 😂
I decided against it because it was Black on Black that would attract the sunshine too much here in the States. Maybe someday I’ll get one In better colors.
What year is best would you say and why?
All years are good honestly with the least good years being 2010 (old headbolt design in m156) and some early 2012s (old timing chain design on m157). If you drive the car in a lot of rainy or possibly snowy conditions then the 2014+ with 4matic is easily the best.

I was almost certain that carbon ceramic breaks didn’t really feel any different, but they can dissipate heat much better. So they preform the same but once fade as quickly as steel

Congratulations with this rare find! I have a question, how are you rating the E63 with 5.5 twin turbo charged engine/car combination? I like the 63 but the extra torque in the lower rpm thanks to the turbo's and updated facelift interior is what attract me to this car.

Hi was wondering if you could help or at least point me in right direction. I have a 07 AMG 63 cabriolet my radio is stuck on the Mercedes logo. The radio and cd work but Controls don’t work wondering if anyone has any ideas.. thanks
I bought a 2007 e63 a couple months ago, love it so far! Just hope it isn't too much of a maintenance nightmare.
Have you done any maintenance so far ?
@@4gomez7 haven’t had to yet, the previous owner did quite a bit, and had the engine checked over and that’s about all I know
@amgmeister how do we know if the headbolts have been done on the M156'S on the E63?
If it's built after engine number 60658 - It has the new headbolts. My engine number is 66923 so it has new headbolts. You can use a site like lastvin.com to check using your vin number. Otherwise, you can tell new versus old if you have the valve covers off - the new bolts use a Torx socket instead of a Torx bit with the old bolts.
How much would a good price to pay for that car today?

Yes, 2 microphones. The first is where the camera is and there is a second near the rear seats (which were folded down). The shifts sound phenomenal in this car.
Im waiting that my up coming: S220 S65 AMG is ready from carage and then I'm gonna be so happy!!!! Bough it on spring and after that it have been on repairshop for complete engine re-built up. Then there is gonna be new breaks and tires. Nice. I bet there is no other in same condition left anywhere.
Nice car and nice video! I've got one question: I'm also in the market for a E63 with the M156 and wanna know if the (common) headbolt problem is really something to worry about. Is it a high risk failure point or do the headbolts snap to only the unlucky few? I'm looking at a 2010 model before the updated headbolts. If someone could give me some advise that would be appreciated!
It's very rare to see an actual failure. And if there is a failure it is usually not catastrophic with symptoms such as a low coolant warning and smoke. That being said it's always a possibility.

My favorite part about this car is the shifter.
You mentioned you were considering also C63 507. Did you buy your E63 because you found the exact car you wanted to buy before, or were you more keen to get E63 overall? I would love to know how you see owning one over the other.
It was really between a 2011 E63 or a 2012+ C63 sedan with a 507 edition being ideal. I like the size and styling of the E63 but the C63 is even more fun to drive because less weight.

@amgmeister how many miles does your car have, are these cars reliable? I’m looking at one for a great price at 140,000 miles.
I just hit 49,000 miles. I think these are solid cars if they have been taken care of.
Quick tip on servicing this type of transmission again in the future, as a Mercedes-Benz technician I learned that as soon as an air bubble happens when draining the remainder of the trans fluid to fully complete the service is when you install the drain bolt, reason why is because it will help it shift better and perform better at higher rpms when shifting. Learned that from a Master tech I worked under when I was an apprentice.

I have a 2010 e63 AMG and work at a Mercedes dealership. We have done multiple transmission services and always use the red fluid. I was wondering if there’s a difference in transmissions between years or if one of us used the incorrect fluid type
2010 would still use red fluid - if you don't have the 'A89 low friction' code on your car! If your vehicle requires blue fluid, it will likely be 2011 or newer.
@AMGmeister I have 2010 w212 E63 which used red red fluid. You can upgrade to the new blue one by flushing the the gearbox itself, MCT, oil cooler (just clean every trace of old fluid), changing to the newer deeper oil pan and the different fill plastic/green colour.
I to have a 2009 59 registration UK w212 E63 had the car now 5 years+ when I had my transmission serviced the transmission specialist notified me the trans oil on this year vehicle was indeed the red Fluid. All early MCT transmission vehicles had the red Fluid I'm lead to believe. My car smooths shift and fast so I have no worries thankfully. Had my cam adjusters replaced with the stronger stage1 from c63 Motorsports. Really made a difference with how smooth the engine performs. No 2 second rattle on cold start or mid warm engine starts no longer. It's a truly amazing machine the w212 paired with that Angry Racing engine M156. Happy motoring w212 M156 family. Does the dealership you work at use the red Fluid on vehicles post 2011. Just curious

You mentioned 2011 was the last year with hydraulic steering. Does that mean the facelift models all have different steering mechanisms then?
At least for the AMG models, 2012+ with the M157 engine has electrically assisted power steering.

Outside of the engine, was there a particular reason why you did not go with LCI?
I like the styling of the pre-facelift better. I like Mercedes sedans with a classic radiator grille and a pointed star on the hood. That is just my taste.

What is the main reason why the M156 6.2 sounds so much better than the M113(K) 5.4 predecessor (also including the N/A)? ... Or in fact better than almost any other V8?
32 valves, higher redline, bigger bore, variable valve timing, better transmission, better exhaust system.
what 4matic AMG do you recommend?
2014-2016 E63S with the M157.
Best balance of reliability, luxury, performance and lower cost of ownership.
@EBIndy I have the m278, which is similar, they are not that good. With the camshaft adjuster issues, timing chain and premature wear on piston 1 and 5 rings the m113 is much more reliable but there is none that is 4matic, the second best option is an m177 engine but price is a bit too high
@@bulmear2531 the 2014-2016s dont have timing chain issues. The cylinder wall scoring is likely due to clowns not changing their oil every 5,000 miles (likely going to 10,000 miles or more).
Hence why you want a low mileage example and know if the previous owner changed their oil regularly. Especially their first oil change.
@EBIndy I see I bought mine with 100k miles, needless to say bad mistake. I was new to the country and I thought that as long as you buy it from a dealership they have went and meticulously checked everything (hence the higher price) boy was I wrong for thinking that. Currently looking AT a 2019 E53AMG I'm just sad because I'm going from a v8tt to a i6 with EQ boost
