The S-Class is one of the most respected Mercedes models and a lot of the best AMG engines went into the S-Class over the years in models like the S55 and S65. W126 to w220 to w222.....

5:03 W126 was the global milestone in design. The European version looked even better as it contrasted with the required extended bumpers and split headlights dedicated to other markets.
Buyers knew MBs commitment to utmost quality, luxury and resale value of the S-Class and this version joined the era in the 80s when it became the symbol of success, stardom and power.

I've owned the #1 on this list (W140) and the #5 (W220). I actually bought the W220 first. It was a 2006 S500 4-Matic. After driving it for several years, I would have to say that it does tend to get a bad rap. Yeah, the Air-Matic system was bound to go bad, but other than that, I put about 50,000 miles on it (after purchasing it with about 100K on the clock) and it was really pretty trouble free. I would actually recommend these cars, as long as you go into it knowing you are probbably going to have to deal with the Air-Matic system. I just look at it as a maintenance item. After 10 years or 100,000 miles, just plan on fixing it (or do like I did and get the coil shocks instead, which worked just fine).
The W140 is a car that was pretty much everything I expected it to be. Very big, roomy, and solid as a bank vault. I didn't pay much for it, but it was 22 years old when I bought it and had about 190,000 miles on it. I saw it on a local car lot and decided that since I had always wanted one, I would pull the trigger on it. The one thing that I didn't expect was that, after driving the W220, the W140 did feel like a much older design. The W220 felt more refined and modern, and living in Minnesota, I missed the 4-Matic's all wheel drive. In spite of this, I will say that, for whatever reason, I always just felt better when I was driving around in the W-140. There is just something about the regal presence you get with the W-140 that is somewhat lacking in the W-220.

Thanks for sharing, as this is helpful insights. I don't own any S class, but would consider getting a used one someday. I can't decide which I want more between the W221 and the W140. I expected the W140 to top most lists. But would the sacrifice in refinement be worth it? It is an old car, and I am afraid I might miss a lot of the modern refinements.
Even though the W126 ranks higher than the W221 on this list, I don't consider it because I think this is a little too old for me to use as a daily driver.

@@fazz27 The W140 is still a very refined car, even by today’s standards. The significant differences between the two models are technology and complexity. The W221’s are at the age where they’ll start to cost their owners a good amount of money, and there are many failure points. A W140 will have had these repairs completed already if the car was maintained properly, plus it’s a mechanically simpler car to begin with.

I enjoyed the ownership of a 1968 300SEL6.3 35 years ago. An incredible muscle car drinking a lot. But under a classical shape the performance was stunning, until you got into a curve in slippery conditions! You had to be very careful in a time where ABS or ESP were inexistant.
I now enjoy a 1991 560 SEC and it is for me the most reliable S class you can dream of. Still very modern and comfortable in this 21st century. I would have ranked it number 1 and its design is beautiful. You drive 1,000 km at 140 km/h and you understand what real comfort means.

I absolutely agree. W140 is the undisputed King of Mercedes. I would have placed W126 second though. Other than that no arguments. Great work.

The W222 S-Class by far is my favourite and to most people, the best overall S-Class ever made. Just the timeless styling, the presence, the elegance, and the interior were all perfect in my opinion.

    My first Mercedes was an 04 E55 with the M113K. Then I bought an 07 S550 (W221) which I like very much. The E55 got totaled and I replaced it with a 2014 E63S (W212 with M157). Can't complain.

This is the perfect video for me. I drive Lexus. But I've been thinking about getting a Mercedes. I just want to try something different. But I don't want to find myself regretting it because of constant issues with the car. When Lexus is the best cars I've personally ever driven. As far as comfort and reliability.

The W220 is still the prettiest car, but man those first years were utter junk. A shame because it was a supermodel in looks compared to the higher quality W140. The W221 S65 is a must have. The W126 will always bee the classiest Mercedes sedan of the modern era. The SWB 300SE, and the long 560SEL and the coupe 560SEC models were just perfection. The W222 is the peak. The interior being arguably better than the W223. The S65 final edition is the one to have. The Coupe and Cabriolet models will no doubt become more valuable in time, being the last of their kind. I have a W140 so enough said... I agree with the ranking.

I am probably in the minority but I like the original W 221 better than the face lift one! The side mirrors are nicer and suit it more also I like the body colour integrated into the rear tail lights!! But most people agree with you but I have really good taste so I do not expect to be in the majority as good taste is rare. I am just kidding people can like and do like what they want and no one can decide what is better or better looking it is in the eye of the beholder.

I've got a serious soft spot for the w220 despite it's flaws. My father worked at a Mercedes dealership when it came out. We used to drive an old Hyundai before and then he brought a s320 cdi with air suspension at home one day. As a little kid, that left a impression for life! I’ve been driving w140 S600 for a decade, and recently I’ve got my w221 S600 with 20k miles only… what a monster! It’s a great car and I loved it, but the feelings I had are absolutely NOTHING compare to the w140, I used to travel alone for a hundreds of miles, with the w140 I felt like I’m traveling with a very trusted friend who is NEVER EVER gonna let me down! Unlike the w221, everyday when I start up the engine I check what if I had a warning light or not :)
