I think Devin townsend doesnt get enough love but he has an incredible voice, and for growls I give it to early 2000's Mikael Akerfeldt.
Yes, Devi definetly trumps all those overhyped Nu-Metal vocalists (not saying they arent good or anything)
Wow, that’s a great answer! Both Devi and Mikael can actually sing, and their screams are chilling. Glad to see them getting some love as opposed to the same cliche answers like Dio, Judas, and Maiden
Devin really has it all tbh. The lows, the highs, screaming, growling, fry. As far as singing goes he is really the complete package.
Devin is definitely the most diverse in metal
Yes and Yes!
Revolver has been pumping content from these interviews for the last 15 years
I still think Chester’s performance of QWERTY at Summer Sonic 2006 is one of the most impressive live performances I’ve ever seen. Period.
Dio, Halford, Dickinson are the holy trio.
Lots of others deserve credit and mention, but those three are/were just in a different level.
yeah the falsetto level... so impressive.
Ian Gillian, David Byron and Robert plant. Thats who you forgot.
Rob Halford, Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, Devin Townsend, Phil Anselmo (first álbuns), Mike Patton, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley...just to name a few. Time to open your ears, this ones are timeless. 🤘
Patton is not human. Everyone should watch compilation vids of his vocals.
I agree with the Airbourne guys - Rob Halford, Ronnie James Dio and Bruce Dickinson is the holy trinity of metal vocalists/frontmen. My honourable mentions would be Mike Patton and Floor Jansen because of their technical provess and versatility.
Yeah, I put those guys on the Mt. Rushmore of metal, and they are so far and away the best three, I can't even think of a forth to put alongside them.
@@badbirdkc how about Ozzy
@@xihansun9817 I don't really consider Ozzy a good singer. He's decent. He has a big personality, but so does Gene Simmons, and I wouldn't put him up their either.
Joey Belladonna
@@xihansun9817 Ozzy is a legend, and a great frontman. But as SINGER? I think Ozzy is very overrated as vocalist...
If I had to decide between Halford, Dio and Dickinson it would always be Dio. What a legend.
Seems like a lot of the younger musicians are going with picks like Corey Taylor or Randy Blythe, which is honestly pretty eye opening, makes me wonder what picks will be the "greatest" as the years go by. For me as someone who's been listening to metal for the last 30+ years, it's too hard to narrow down just one person so it'd be Dio, Halford, Dickinson, the trinity as many others have mentioned. They are in a league of their own, Legends.
@Mer Luzo well some commenter said lemmy. Not a good pick, but its who people connected with the most. Slipknot was huge for me growing up. And alot of the times its more about emotion. Someone like corey taylor or dave grohl arent as professionally trained as say david draiman but they put that raw emotion and special character to their voice that make them in their own way true rockstars or metal gods
@Mer Luzo 0 IQ comment. Dude has been on top of the world for the past 25 years, has an insane vocal range, can rap, scream, growl and basically do any vocal style you can name. Yeah, he's a douche, but calling him a trash vocalist is just retarded.
I've been listening to metal for just over 30 years and my pick is for Randy Blythe. But these are all just opinions in what you prefer in a vocalist. Higher register vs deep growling vocals. Much like guitars. Some like high pitched shredding solos and some prefer dark crusty riffs. To each their own
Typing a paragraph to say the 3 mentioned in over half the video tells me you are a drone
Btw based on your name and pic you know nothing about the 3 “trinity” you mentioned proving my point.
To me, you can’t beat Bruce Dickinson - as both a front man and insanely talented vocalist.
When I think about it logically, it will always be the three headed dragon of Dio, Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford. All three have the range, power and charisma in abundance - unlike other metal vocalists who just have one or two.
Which does King Diamond not have?
These are the correct answer
@@herculesbrofister265 A shitload of falsetto. King Diamond is a fantastic story teller and has a unique voice, but he's not even in my top 10 vocalists.
You got it spot on dude! Although I love Bruce and Maiden, my personal ultimate vocalist is Ronnie James Dio. I'm with Lzzy Hale, who is in my opinion the greatest woman rock singer ever. My opinion.
Phil Anselmo can do it all..
It's hard, my top 5 are probably Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Corey Taylor, and Serj Tankian
Honorable mentions: Maynard James Keenan and Ozzy
Not bad 👍, Add Layne to your list, & you my friend have a solid list Joe 👏.
Phil Anselmo. He has, to me, the greatest set of range you can have in metal. He had the high range in his early years. Cemetery gates can attest to that. Vulgar display of power showed that he can have a tough grit. On Far beyond driven, he showed he has death metal growls. Slaughtered fucking kills. The great southern trend kill had him show his more raspy screeches and then low tone with song like suicide note part 2 and floods. And reinventing the steel had him show that 30 year old testosterone whiskey gargle growls. It's evolved throughout the years. But his charisma on stage is something that isn't matched. Energy. Crowd interaction. The strength and power of his presence. And how he directs and demands you to headband and break your fucking neck. To me, he had it all.
Phil is the greatest and it's no contest. These people are clueless.
Thank you, I was waiting for someone to give Phil the credit he deserves.
101%!!! I already said Phil was my pick but couldn't be bothered to mention reasons. You've saved me the time!!!!!
The fact he didn’t get 1 vote is embarrassing lol. It’s no contest.
@@dustinhanson2144 Except that he completely sucks and everyone they named is much better than him.
Surely an honourable mention to Peter Steele - Type O Negative.
Either one honours Peter or his ghost will steal your girlfriend.
@@mavericktheace and then write a great song about it.
Serj Tankian has an icredible vocal range, It's a shame his voice hasnt been the best in recent years though. Still killing it though
Maynard James Keenan - Tool. And diverse vocals with apc, puscifer.
He is the best for any one who understands esoteric shit.
I personally think mike Patton. He may not be as iconic as other vocalists, but he’s got everything. Range, presense, and a ton of skill, he’s done everything
My personal favorite.
He's not a "metal vocalist" though. He sings pretty much every genre.
And Layne Staley?
@@j800r_aswell Mr. Bungle were one the pioneers of Death Metal.

Jonathan Davis is my personal favorite metal vocalist of all time. Been doing it for almost 30 years now. Incredible, songwriter, and stage presence.
Great choice 👏
Thank you. 🤘
I’m glad to see him getting love. He’s such a unique talent.
Jonathan Davis is so good live. He's honestly a better singer now.
I love a lot of great vocalists but just like you Jonathan is my fav
He is One of the unique vocalists of all time 🖤🌽
Jonathan Davis really doesn't get enough credit and praise for his vocals. He is so unique and distinctive, you can never mistake his voice for someone else's. Also, such a versatile singer! Screams, growls, ballads, absolutely does it all. Also, Phil Anselmo not being mentioned at all in this video is kinda silly.
Honestly yeah. I've seen Korn 6 times throughout the years and every single time he kills it.
Also Phil in the 90's was great but dude has shot his voice out something fierce.
No doubt he's great and distinctive but we're talking about GREATEST VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
My first “big” concert was Motörhead, Dio and Maiden. That was a pretty iconic trio right there
Feel like i already watched this
That's because revolver doesn't have new content 😂
They've pretty much redid most of there vids like this
Because you probably have, they reposted this
Yup
Now you know why they're called Revolver 😂
If anybody has never watched Pantera live in Seoul Korea, then don't come telling me Phil isn't the best pure heavy metal vocalist to ever live, and I've never heard any other heavy metal band, sound as heavy/brutal/evil as they did in that concert like damn I'll never be able to get over it.
The white power shit tarnished his work for me, but he is a beast
Thats literally black metal concert of groove metal band lmao
He sounds really good in a Down performance in Dallas 1995. It’s on UA-cam
@@figu6ka379 i know lol but that's what makes it so good, idk just something about it. When I first ever heard it I just couldn't stop listening to it, and I was in a bad place in my mind at that time so it really pulled me in.
That was my thought, too. Apparently, Phil Anselmo is an idiot and many people don't like him. But if you define "best metal vocalist" as the most aggressive voice you have heard, he is probably the best choice.
Phil Anselmo, have lots of technique...great presence and performance etc
yes, noone intonates the Hitler Salutes and White Power Yells quite like him
Way to say your ears don't work.
I'm surprised no one said Howard Jones of KSE and Light The Torch. That dude's talent is unreal in both pretty singing vocals and heavy aggressive screaming vocals.
Agreed he’s the best metal vocalist of all time.
Probably my fav too
Blood Has Been Shed as well.
There was Phil Anselmo in this video one time, I can remember it.
Why is off this time? What happened?
Maybe Revolver has gone woke lol. What a joke.
They just keep re-releasing the same shit, with different cuts or different people. They did the same thing with several other videos, like "should non-metalheads wear metal t-shirts," and others.
I find it hard to believe anyone that knows anything about music would call him a good singer.
prime Phil Anselmo for sure. insane vocal range, power, crowd control, entertainment, presence. dude had it all
Right!?
Agreed
agreed, half these vocalists sound like opera singers. none of them sound as aggressive as phil
So fckin glad someone finally said Chester. People can hate on them because of their pop music, but Chester was one of the best live performers I've ever seen, could sing like an absolute angel and scream like a demon out of hell, so consistently, The Hunting Party has some of the most brutal vocals he's ever done and they're amazing.
All rock or metal is pop music.
One of the most versatile and beautiful voiced in heavy music history, I don’t care what anyone says.
bc linkin park isnt metal at all.
@@mxt217 Hybrid theory and Meteora are Nu Metal albums. The Hunting Party is also a metal album
@@mxt217 please explain to me how nu metal isn't metal. I'm curious.
I'm sorry but no one will ever touch Phil Anselmo, yeah everyone is entitled to their opinion but damn. Phils voice has so many ranges, from death metal to high pitch vocals, to just singing and he proved that recently when he sang planet caravan live. Pantera is just the best metal band all around. And when they played live you can tell Phil put all his heart into every show, just insane screaming and I think that's why he has so much trouble with his voice these days, and he still sounds amazing for his age. I can't believe no one mentioned him honestly.. that's ashame. I'm only 25 and I'm going with someone that's been around for a long time. Corey Taylor would be the only one that comes close to Phil. Pantera for life 🤘but when it comes down to it there are too many amazing vocalists to put one at #1 but Phil will always be my favorite.
I'd say devin townsend has a more brutal and in tune scream and a wider singing range. Phil is an absolute beast though
Phil Anselmo is overrated and Klantera is in no way shape or form the best metal band all around.
@Dragon Ball fans can't read I'm guessing you never seen em live from up against the rail...more brutal than slayer or morbid angel

Ronnie James Dio. No doubt about it.
Halford is a close one too.
And King Diamond is also a personal favourite.
No one mentioned King Diamond, but Corey Taylor...These "metal heads" don't know too much about metal.
Rob Halford is the voice that got me into metal. I heard their latest album (wchich came out 5 years ago and I hate how long ago it is) and I thought that the vocalist is in their 30s maybe 40s. His vocal range and technical ability overall is incredible, he is great frontman, great stage presence and a top of that he seems so nice and polite in interviews. He’s like metal Santa Claus, wchich is fitting, because he loves christmas, even made a whole christmas metal album, that has actually my second favorite christmas song, the first is Krampus by Snowy Shaw, also great musician.
My second favorite is Jonathan Davis, someone already made comment about him and I totally second that. Just want to add that Jonathan is not just a singer, he also plays bagpipes! Definitelly the best bagpipe player in metal.
Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Bon Scott, Geoff Tate, Sebastian Bach, Joe Elliott, Omg so many greats to choose from. Why don’t we just say all of them?
Not a single mention of Mike Patton. That's peculiar.
Agree! He can do anything with his voice, just an incredible talent. He lent his vocal ability to the movie I Am Legend.
Probably because that ain't metal
@@fraka899 look up Irony is a dead scene
I don't think I would mention Patton either if I was put on the spot tbf.
First name that I thought about when I saw the thumbnail to this video.
No love for King Diamond?
GRANDMAAAAAAAAAAA! 🤘
King has been #1 for me since the first time I heard him.
There's really no wrong answers in this video. I love them all. I would go with Maynard
Same here. Seen the man do a 23 second scream. Iconic
Mike Patton!
Phil anselmo is the man
HOLD YOUR MOUTH FOR WARR!
I know it's not Metal, but my favourite vocalist is David Coverdale. David in his prime had a beautiful/powerful voice. Suprised no one said Sebastian Bach or Tom Araya though...
guys it is Mike Patton.
Lot of basic picks, which isn't a bad thing they're ubiquitous for a reason, but mine would have to be Devin Townsend, Mike Patton, and Phil Anselmo.
So many great options but one that will always fly under the radar is Jon Oliva. Incredible talent that is sadly not recognized often because of the way savatage never hit the true level of popularity they probably should have. At least TSO brings them great success now.
Savatage \m/
Mikael Akerfeldt, Devin Townsend, Hetfield, Chester and Phil Bozeman. I'm not hugely into classic Heavy Metal, but obviously Halford and Dickinson need to be mentioned in a list like this. There's just too many to name them all, too many different styles as well.
Metal music is not supposed to be played in studios. It comes to life on the stage. Being a great metal singer is not about singing but rather about being able to transfer their own energy to the crowd, infect them with the energy and reabsorb the energy back. In that respect, there can be nobody better than Bruce Dickinson. The guy generates enough energy to power a city!
Airbourne are bang on! Bruce, Dio and Halford are the holy trinity. Biff Byford, Phil Anselmo, Devin Townsend, Brian Johnson etc all up there too 🤘
Did not hear, or see in the comments, one mention for Machinehead’s Rob Flynn. And that makes me happy!
Though I definitely agree Halford, Dickinson and Dio have a threeway tie for greatest of all time, but I love seeing how diverse the metal community has become. I think it's great one group obviously are more into a hip hop influenced metal, and another is into something completely different. As much as I don't like stuff like Nu-Metal or Limp Biscuit (however they spell that) I welcome their fans into the metal fan club with open arms, and love seeing the younger generation make it their own
no one mentioned Maynard, Phil Anselmo or Mike Patton which is said
Chester God Rest his Soul was a great singer, he’s worthy successor as far as singing prowess to Dio and Bruce; of course his music was as far removed from traditional Metal as possible, but he was very talented.
Chester who? That's not metal
Were you born in 1990?
Dio, Bruce and Rob are the only correct answers
I love how many different takes we get here. Raw talent, longevity, stage presence, style, aggression, versatility are all factors, but nothing matters more than who you grew up with. That person who made some impact on you is probably gonna be your answer literal decades later.
So, it's no surprise that so many people went to Slipknot, a prime voice of pissed off generations, stuck with the people who now make that music. Personally, I credit myself getting into metal because of 5 or so musicians and a handful of full bands, but the only two vocalists/frontmen I'd place on their own as an influence (as opposed to along with the band) are Rob Halford and Devin Townsend.
Devin Townsend still has the best scream, growl, control and range for 30 years now.
For me it’s Dio. I would also like to mention Chris Cornell; though not exactly a metal vocalist, he shows his metal side in songs like Jesus Christ Pose
I can't believe Eric Adams isn't In the conversation.
Serj Tankian for me. Not really metal, but yeah he's my favourite. I'd put M shadows up there too, along with Dio and Halford. I like the Hetfield shout just for his stage presence. Early 90s James will never be topped.
The thing is, there is more to vocals than just clean singing in a higher range. A talented vocalist can manipulate their voice in many ways. I say that Devin Townsend is a the perfect candidate. Just listen to Kingdom.
We're including everything from power, range, talent and Dave kicks ass but isn't in the top 10
Christian Alvestam - Miseration, Scar Symmetry, Solution .45. The dude has unreal talent.
It's soooo incredibly hard to choose. But Jonathan Davis needs to get some recognition, because what he cand do with his voice and the emotion he brings is just incredible. Not to mention that he is amazing live.
While I love all types of metal in their own regard, I think Corey’s vocals from 2000-2002 are just out of this world. No other vocalist could perform with such brutality and aggression like that for as long as he did 🤘🏻
I have seen Combichrist about 6 times. Andy is always on point live. Vocally. He's a beast.
Gotta be Chino Moreno for me. I don't know how you scream in such a smooth manner, but he does it man.
Noah Sebastian off of Bad Omens has an insane range, both screams and clean vocals
I feel like Maynard should be in the conversation
These people don't even know.
@@guywithalltheanswers6942
I love tool, but let’s be honest they aren’t really “metal” more psychedelic rock, yes, some of their songs can be heavy, but with them being my favorite band, I’d rather take an acid trip, then head bang to their music
@@matthewharvey9968 I never really cared for their heavier stuff.
like Airbourne said "Holy Trinity, Dio, Halford & Dickinson" imo 🤘
How can people forget LEMMY???? His voice is METAL!!!!!!!
Because they couldn't say God was the best metal vocalist. It wouldn't be fair to us mortals lol
nah, voice and vocalist are diferent things, and Lemmy wasnt great
Lenny became a parody in the end.
Lemmy is a comically poor vocalist. I love him and the band but if we are talking technical ability he started bad and ended truly awful.
@@spicyf yeah I agree it's like with les claypoole in primus he isn't a good singer but he is a good vocalist especially for the band he is in
Mike Patton
I would die to have the voice Phil Anselmo had during the "cowboys from hell" era❤
Too many. My favorite vocalists are ones who can mix clean and harsh vocals together seemingly. Mike Patton comes to mind. Also very eclectic in musical style. Phil of Pantera was amazing at that too. Corey Taylor. Howard Jones. RJD. Jonathan Davis. Tatiana from jinjer. Rob Halford is way up there too. Vortex formerly from Dimmu Borgir is such an underappreciated vocalist. Jack Black can sing his ass off. So hard to pick one.
Tommy Giles Rogers Jr. From between the buried and me... listen to coma ecliptic or parallax II, this dude is insane
Dio, Dickenson, Corey Taylor.
Personally, my favorite is Howard Jones. Just going off the fact that I gain the same enjoyment out of listening to Howard Jones era Killswitch now as I do when I first got into Killswitch as a kid.
agreed
And youre right. These kids are going on their favorites rather than all time greatest vocalists
Dio doesn't get nearly enough love on this list and seeing Corey Taylor being mentioned so much more than Dio is just saddening.
King Diamond and Eric Adams really should have been mentioned at least. Absolute legends that are on the same level as Halford and Dickinson.
Dio was literally talked about for like half of the video.
Yeah I heard a lot of Dio
My favourite vocalist is Chris Cornell, pure metal has to be phil anselmo but If anyone says anything but Rob Halford for the greatest then they need to educate themselves
I have to say Devin Townsend. He doesn't get enough recognition but can this guy ever sing. And he's Canadian Eh!
Bruce Dickinson
Rob Halford
Ronnie James Dio
Biff Byford
Michael Kiske
Ozzy Osbourne
Andy Deris

Not in any particular order but those are among the greatest in my humble opinion
A bit of a newer one compared to those mentioned, but one not mentioned is Howard Jones (Ex kse and current light the torch) he's honestly one of the best imo
King Diamond. Dudes 66 and sounds better than he ever has after a fucking triple bypass surgery, and being medically dead for 5 hours.
Bruce. If we're gonna judge by their vocal ability and their showmanship. Thing is Bruce is basically a classical vocalist in a heavy metal band. If you want a 'metal' vocalist then it's really hard to get past Corey, the range, the consistency, the energy, he basically has it all.
2:38 100%. The Top 3. No debate.
I mean, Dio's kinda hard to beat, but my favorite metal vocalist is Devin Townsend. Both for his range and just having his own fingerprint on what he does, he just does his own thing and you know when it's him you're hearing.
David Draiman took me by surprise with how much presence he had when he came on stage. So powerful
There’s a couple of haters in the comments mad that Corey got so much love. How tf can you deny that man’s range. Maybe not the goat but if he’s not, he’s damn sure in the conversation
