    No shit, we're finally doing a "What's so special" video about the 2JZ! Often touted as one of the best straight six engines on the planet, Toyota's 2JZ has reached almost mythical status in the tuning scene, but why?

      Consider the Boss 260 and how it is a pretty decent engine but it dors have some factory issues that need upgrading, maybe elaborate how the exhaust valves and cam caps are different between higher performance versions and how the lower intake is the best one for the 5.4 modular engines, be good because everyone just trashes on them without knowing anything about them lol

      It’s so overbuilt, it’s everything we love about Toyota, shown off in a single motor. No huge weaknesses, just amazing smooth performance with mechanically durable internals. Simply the best. And the fact they still offer reasonably priced replacements this far on... Its a testament to the brand

    The sequential turbo system does actually use both turbos after 4000rpm. Has a very interesting system for blocking the hot and cold outlets of the second turbo to stop it from spinning. There's a 3rd valve that opens to allow it to start spinning at I think it's 3500rpm from memory. Then at 4000rpm, the other valves open up and then both are working like a parallel system.

    Hi mate, minor correction, the sequential setup on the 2jz is a primary that runs on all six cylinders, which then pre-spools the second identical turbo, before bringing it online to provide parallel twin operation, ie. two matching turbos each fed from 3 cylinders. I am in the process of setting up an elite 2500 to run the factory sequential system with high flowed JDM CT20 turbos.

      Meh. The 2jz was made by TOYOTA. They took what they learned on the 1jz and elaborated. Yamaha was the go to for literally everyone who wanted a badass engine. Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Yamaha designed or blueprinted many of the great motors from the 70-00s... But the 2jz was not a Yamaha engine.

      @@freestyleskylineNot really here to debate, as this is about the 2jz, but nearly all the toyota engines with "ge" or "gte" has Yamaha stamps on the head, even if the 2jz doesn't have such, then it simply has been slightly revised as the head is nearly identical to the 1jz that was definitely had the yamaha stamp on the head. Just because its slightly different doesnt make it originally toyota design, all they did was modify the original yamaha design.

    Great Video first of all and good explanation for non engine builders like myself. One engine I would like to see an episode about is the 3S variant that Toyota used in some of the Supra's for racing like you mentioned and possibly some explanation as to why those were chosen over the 7m series or the JZ series. Also if you could show the Iconic "Cheat" valve that got them disqualified using the Celica GT Four in Rallying.

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 Рік тому

      The 3S-GTE is the same engine (essentially) as the MkII MR-2 turbo and the Celica GT-Four. They used it (longitudinally) in the JGTC Supra because the GT500 class rules were set up to limit the engines to around 500 bhp (or more likely, PS... hence the name, and likewise the GT300 class cars were limited to around 300 HP). The 3S was a noticeably lighter and shorter engine since it it was only a 4-cylinder, and they would have no problem making 500 HP on a race variant of that 2.0 liter inline-4. The narrower powerband from getting 500 HP from a 2-liter vs 500 HP from a 3-liter would be a minimal issue since race engines spend their lives at the top of the rev range anyway, and the marginally reduced throttle response ("turbo lag") was an easy sacrifice when compared to saving a sizeable chunk of weight from the heaviest end of the car. Weight is the enemy in racing, and reducing weight while making the weight distribution better is basically the holy grail for a motorsports engineer.
      Edit: As far as the restrictor "cheat" from the Toyota WRC cars, he'd be hard pressed to make a video about it, I think. There are almost no images of the device itself on the internet, only a few drawn diagrams, and I imagine the devices themselves were all destroyed afterwards.

  • @ma61turbo
    @ma61turbo 2 роки тому +6

    2 J ZED dammit!
    Edit: there were a number of reasons Toyota used the 3s in the JGTC race cars and it's not just because they had already been developing it. Using a 4 cylinder enabled better weight balance, was lighter and as turbo restrictors were in use, the 3S gave them their power goals with a better power band than a 2jz if it were to have a restrictor.

    uh, its an inline 6 with a decent cylinder head. i-6s are inherently neutral balanced and the proper number of main supports helps make a strong block. its no secret that cfm = power for cylinder heads. why is this some huge new thing that people are just learning?
    i-6s were common in economy cars back in the day because they were smooth but down on power because you cant make some ridiculous size inline 6 and have it fit under a hood line unless its a truck and/or has a huge front end.
    finally, whatever you do to a 3.0 i-6, a 3.0 v8 will make the same power if all other things are held equal

    Imagine the torture Toyota engineers put the prototype motors through. I'm sure all manufacturers of that period had a "needs to be able to handle Group A" minimum. You don't come across a 1000hp design by accident. I wonder what kind of thinking the engineers did behind the block design. How much they pushed the old 7M, did they put the RB series under X-ray and fix all it's weaknesses? To be capable of double it's factory output is one thing, but 4-5 times is just crazy. You really see their ambition and passion for engineering in the older Toyota designs.

    Forgot about the Crown? All the R series, the M series, G series, JZ series, and continuing to the GR, UZ, UR and TR series, they all powered the Toyota Crown. It can be said that the M series were made for the Crown foremost, and everything else was made because they were derived from the Crown platform, which also conveniently furnished a rear wheel drive platform. Being Toyota's flagship car, Toyota developed, then threw, its best engines on the car and its subsequent generations.

    Reminds me of the 1997 volvo straight six but this motor seems to be thinner the volvo was wider also shorter great size motor this 2jz. The volvo motor was designed by porsche and is a sweet heart of an engine. I wish the pcv system was better though and better ac condenser rubbers are too brittle and the coolant desevoiur is a joke. They never changed it from the 80s. But what can I say I have had it for decades lol still drives me everywhere comfortably.

    All i did for my GTE was build the head and left the bottom end stock. Going into my S13 as a street/track car until i'm craving more power.
    Living in the US makes owning an RB kind of undesirable if i get stranded with no available parts. Plan is build my S13 reliable and strong and if i want an RB, then get a R32 later hopefully

    • @FightingSportsMedia
      @FightingSportsMedia 2 роки тому

      RB's are legendary bu even RB owners will tell you they kinda suck to mod. They need so many mods to not die at moderate power levels.

    • @Jez3134
      @Jez3134 2 роки тому +1

      @@FightingSportsMedia RB owner here, I wouldn't say they're so bad that they suck. Rb's will do a reliable 300kw all day long, which is plenty in a 1300kg street car. Considering you'd run a high 12 sec pass with 200kw. The Rb25 head doesn't even need cams until 400kw. 350kw is where your reliability is getting questionable if it's not a Neo rb25 (26 rods) or rb26. Just gotta be mindful not to smash limiter like an idiot to preserve the oil pump.
