Here's a step by step instruction guide on how to clean a Pentair Cartridge filter. Pentair Cartridge filter :a.co/7oZMTSs replacement filters :a.co/g2gfApv
Great video....loved the Benny Hill music and Dumb and Dumber clip! Laughs aside, this saves me around $200 vs having a pool company come out. Greatly appreciate it!
Wow not only did I find a video to walk me through everything, you, Nick, are the man who sold and helped design our pool! Thank you from the Alvarado’s! 👏👏
This is the best pool filter cleaning video on UA-cam. I have been using it for over a year. Also, if your spa and pool jets appear to be circulating water more inefficiently, it may be the clogged pool filter. Clean it thoroughly and watch the results. Thank you for this video! 😎
Thanks for posting this tutorial. I forgot to relieve the pressure from the filter. After trying everything to get the top off, I watched your video and it reminded me how to do it. Thanks again!
Excellent video. I went from DE to cartridge and this will be my first time. D.E. was a pita to replace those fins. You explained everything very well, I espeically like when and why for the pressure valve. Thanks again. Best tutorial on this.
Nick, just wanted to say thank you for this easy to follow tutorial. I just bought a home that came with a pool and ran across this video. Sure enough, the filter had massive amounts (pounds) of fine sand caked on. I couldn't believe the amount of sand. I could have easily filled a wall mart bag or two.
Very informative thanks for posting. After watching this I gained the courage to clean mine. First time in the four years we’ve had the pool and they were disgusting. In my defense the pressure in the system was still below the “clean” line. Anyways i was able to put everything back together and my house hasnt exploded yet so I must’ve done something right!
@@GuitarsAndSynths So I think its actually been three years but I’m guessing that still sounds like too long. When the guys installed the pool I was told to keep an eye on the pressure gauge on the filter. When it gets above a certain level it indicates it needs to be cleaned (build up of junk causing higher pressure). But the pressure when running the filter at our standard speed never goes up. The last time we cleaned it, it was after two or three years and there wasn’t all that much to clean. Thoughts? Do you think I should just clean it periodically regardless of a pressure reading?
I appreciate the video. I didn't even know this "cleaning pool filters" was a thing. Great job. I can't believe you actually got some haters at the end. "We give your comment a 1 or the middle finger" - Hilarious!
I found an easy way to reinstall DE filter pads that needs to be shared. I don’t do videos so perhaps you can add this to one of yours. I was one of those who struggled with getting my Hayward filter pads realigned after taking them off the manifold. There was always one or two that would leak DE back into the pool on completion. I thought one or more may have torn but it turned out the filter pads weren’t seated properly to the manifold. I found it by running the pump in the backwash mode (cover off) and seeing water leaking from several of the connections. After disassembling I turned the manifold upside down, started with the short pad and worked clockwise outside to inside making sure all pads were well seated into the manifold and there correct spacers. The hardest part was getting the long bolt back into the manifold hole and it wasn’t that bad. All in all this was a much easier task than working from the normal position and no leaks or DE back into my pool. As a side note, I almost purchased a new filter set at $100 plus.
This was super-helpful, thank you. I knew I could do this, but I'd been procrastinating, and this video gave me the little extra shove to get it done. Everything worked out exactly like you showed in the video. I never like to think "what could go wrong?", because you ask that and you'll find out But nothing did. Thanks!
It might depend on how strong a pump you have, I don’t know, but for my pump it was about 30 seconds I think? Plus or minus 10 seconds. I could hear it filling up though so it’s not a sudden surprise.
I watched this video to find out how to take the plug out of the filter. When it got to that part you came on screen with it in your hand and said, “I took the plug out of the filer”🤣 I screamed “ HOW?”😂 is there a certain tool? Everything else was awesome! I cleaned my pool filter using this video but I didn’t drain it because I couldn’t get the plug out
the plug on the bottom of the filter are all different. so the best/easiest way would be to use a pair of medium sized channel locks to remove the plug underneath the filter to drain out all the dirty wall/sediment left inside the filter tank. I did miss that part of the video! sorry!
Question❓ can I run my pool pumps with out that piece of screen that is attached to the 3/4 PVC pipe that's in the middle of all four filters??I believe it catches debri that is being pumped back into the pool. I removed mine due to always clogging up to much and not able to use my pool vacuum at it's best. Any advice any ones got for that?? Thank you
When attempting, the filter drain cap broke. Not sure if it was an installation issue or what. Either way it broke, any videos or suggestions to replace the plug cap??
after you twist the thing on the top to release the air, how do you know it's complete and that all air is out? also, do you turn it back to original start point before moving on to next steps? and mine has a lever - when I flip the lever to prime my lines, when the air is all out water spurts out the opposite side of the lever - it's not *this* lever I'm adjusting, it's the whole top piece, right? TIA
good questions: Once all air is out of the system, water will start spraying out of the air release. go ahead and close it. if you have a lever, that's ok. turn on the pool (after the filter clean process) then flip open that lever until all air is out and water is spraying out. then close lever. good to go!
Thanks for this. Just did my first filter clean out on the new pool. The only thing I messed up was pointing the pressure gage words the house when it’s closed…..
Go into more detail as to how you get the black staining from deep in the filter pleats. My filters look clean white from hose pressure deep cleaning. However the gauge says they are still dirty. I clean them Twice a month and they’re a year old.
I'm sorry but this video cracks me up. You open the air relief valve to let the air out of the filter. If you let the air out what do you have Funny Ah well, you said it right once, yah, you let the water out, but You didn't show taking out the drain plug in which specifically Pentair drain plugs tend to get small pieces of gravel and calcium in between the threads of the plug itself, which sometime need to be cleaned . It can be so bad at times that it can actually strip the threads of the tank taking it out. Gravel from composition roofing after a hail storm etc. Really left out a lot of things but then anyone who does not have some kind of mechanical background should be very careful. Especially putting the tank lid back on, yes, put the bandclamp o-ring back on with the same side up as it originally was and with a thin coat of silicone lubricant might be good as well, and seat the lid appropriately. Make Sure the band clamp is on correctly and slide the threaded stud part through the sleeve on the other side holding that other side up with your knee (the third hand). As you tighten the nut on, making sure you have both washers, spring and brass nut,, tighten it some, then tap around the bandclamp with a rubber mallet to seat it better, tighten some more, then tap some more, tighten some more until you see it is nice and close all the way around. That assures that it won't leak. And I say all this about the lid and bandclamp because my old boss,, didn't put one on correctly one time, because he is always in a hurry working on other people's stuff and ,,,,,,,... . After cleaning filter, sitting in his truck filling out paperwork,, he heard a boom. He looked up to see the tank lid flying over the house and land in the neighbors yard across the street. I'm sure he probably tightened it good but I'm betting he didn't seat the bandclamp on both lid and bottom tank .Dang it, I hate it when that happens,, LOL Anyways, anyone with some kind of mechanical aptitude should be able to figure it out from whatever you just said.
Re: reinstalling the filters. You should know your stuff before you tell people something. Filters back in upside down, right side up...... I dont think it matters.....REALLY?
I wish that pentair would make a smaller powerful filter that is easier to remove and clean! The one in mine is massive, heavy and a royal PITA to clean!
Great video. 2 questions please. 1) Simple Green cleaner, are you worried about that cleaner getting back into the pool and effecting the chemical balance or hurting the plaster? 2) is there any type of lubricant you use on the O-ring when reinstalling to ensure a good seal? Or is it necessary? Didn't see that in the video. Thank you for your insight.
2. I'm certainly no expert as I did my first one today. I washed the upper and lower grooves where the O-ring rests with a forceful jet of water, though I guess you could use a scrub brush on it if you are really meticulous. I rubbed my palms with dish soap and worked my way around the O-ring, then rinsed and repeated one more time (if convenient, washing in a sink full of soapy water would probably be even better.) After it dried I coated a rag with silicone spray and worked this around the O-ring. It seemed to work very well. I saw someone use silicone spray in another filter cleaning video. Someone commented below that you should use silicone jelly from the pool store to avoid possible petroleum ingredients which may attack the O-ring, however, the Gunk Silicone Spray that I used says that it is compatible with all metal, rubber, and wood right on the front of the spray can.
Good video. I would not recommend using any cleaner on your filters. (Simple Green is an excellent cleaner though). They have to be rinsed VERY thoroughly and most people don't and end up with cleaner in the pool which can bubble and cause headaches with chemical balance. Same if you have an above ground spa. 13 years ago I used a cleaner from the mfgr of my spa for my spa filters and I had bubbles for days. Have never done it since. Just thoroughly rinse the filters and you will be fine. That's the way pro pools guys do it.
I am a pool tech and one of the commercial pools I do has 2 of these. I believe they're the 240's but still the same design. I just take the elements out, hose them off real good and put them back in. Pretty simple but hosing off 8 filter elements takes a bit of time although I typically get both done in about 30 minutes or so.
Thanks for the tutorial, Nick. How often should I be doing this. I'm in AZ, and we have these ugly dust storms come through here in July and August. I have a guy who comes once a week to check the chemicals and brush, but he charges me separately to clean the filter. I'd like to just maintain that myself. Thanks again. -Jeff
Jeff Martin I would recommend cleaning filters every 3-4 months or when filter pressure gauge starts getting high. It’s basically letting you that it’s starting to struggle to push water through. I live in AZ too, I feel your pain when it comes to dust storms. I always clean my filters the day after a “heavy” dust storm.

turn on the pump.
I believe you should remove the drain plug to drain the filter before removing the clamp. Otherwise the filter will be full of water.

@@24ozz yes. Air gets sucked in and water goes out to your pool if your equipment is higher then the pool which I hope it is.
