- Today we cleaned my Pentair 4000 pool filter. We took apart everything cleaned and lubricated in order to get ourselves ready for the last few months of summer. Thank you guys for watching and I hope you learn something today.

This is well-done and informative, thanks. Couple of notes: The filter panels may not pull out easily. I had to pull them all out of the tank as a unit, with the manifold that they sit in. Then I really had to pull hard to get the bases out of the manifold, and it sounded like they were breaking off. But none did. Also note that each of the filter bases (a PVC pipe) has a notch, which has to be aligned with a peg in each of the manifold holes when you reinsert them... re-reading this, that may have been the problem in pulling them out. And finally you may have to rotate and fiddle with that top plastic holder to get the top edge of each filter into the guides on the underside of it; those are pegs that keep the filters spaced symmetrically.
Mike, you are the greatest!! Followed your directions to get my Pentair 4000 pool filter cleaned and did it! Your directions are awesome. You should promote your UA-cam channel so more people get to see this great video. I've always been hesitant to do the filter cleaning because it always looks so complicated but your video simplified everything. So now I am saving $$$ not having someone come in just to do the filter cleaning. Thanks again!!

Thank you for the comprehensive explanation. I watched some other videos on Pentair 4000 but those guys were either in a rush, or the audio didn't work, or they skipped a step. Question Mike: my skimmer got a lot of dead leaves in the tube. So I tried the hose-and-rag method on my system from the filter side pushing into the pool side, but I think there is a little cap inside the plumbing which does not allow water go the reverse direction. I am probably not understainding something, thouth I would ask you.
Unfortunately that doesn’t sound like something i can figure out on my end but i can recommend a product that I started using to reduce leaves, making their way from the pool into the filter. Look this up on Amazon: pool hose filter for leaves.
This helped me keep everything out of my filter. Hope it helps buddy.
hi thank you very useful, however my valve circle thing on top does not turn independently.....I am trying to open and release the air.....but I'm nervous. bummer. great video though thank you

Thanks for the great video. It was very informative. Quick question: at the bottom of the filter, I had dirt that had caked up, so after removing the panels and washing them, I was left with a lot of residue that I hosed down. The water is now stagnant in the filter even when I open the backwash at the bottom.
Is there a way for me to drain that water that’s at the bottom of the filter? The cleaning that you did at the 4:15 mark, I tried doing but my water stayed in the tank.
Great question, so on the bottom of your filter (on the outside) you’ll find a metal stick, the stick acts as a lever to open the bottom of the filter to drain that water.
The idea is to clean it out then just rinse so you don’t have a ton of water to pour out. It’s pretty stiff to open, but you’ll get it. Don’t forget to return it to its original position to close it. And as always, once put back together visually inspect for leaks. I hope that helps.
@@mikegray7828thank you for the very prompt reply, the problem is, I have opened the lever but the water hasn’t drained, leading me to believe it’s muddy. Can I possibly use the pump to mechanically force that water out?
@@garenmoghoyan3284 I'd try and get underneath to get my eyes on it.its hard to evaluate online. I'm not so sure I know how to mechanically force water out either.
Great video Mike. However, do you have to backwash the filter too? There was another video and the guy opened the valve at the bottom to backwash the filter. Thanks.
Backwashing is an option, but i just clean it all the way. Backwashing is usually a quick way to buy you some time with a dirty filter. Thanks for the great question!

quick question, how you let the water release from the bottom i missed that part?!
The valve at the top of the filter, just turn it counterclockwise after you turn off your pump. The water just goes back into the pool, takes about 45 seconds
How to remove metal rod? It is stuck and cant turn with wrench
Can you remove the wing nut at the top?
