The Doctor is an (effectively) immortal being who had already lived the life of several human beings by the time he met Rose, but human beings live for less than a century (typically) before we die.
To Rose in this context, she wasn’t anything special to the Doctor but another in a very long line, from her POV. And this is different to human relationships because those break apart because the people aren’t right for one another. Their relationship will end because the Doctor will outlive Rose by several centuries. No matter what she does, he will always live beyond her, and thus need to be more detached to prevent the trauma of her death from affecting him like the death of your wife would affect you because he would have to live for several more centuries with that pain, not just decades.
That moment when Sarah comes across the TARDIS again. Just legendary.
Great moment and you realise that the Doctor that she’s imagining is big Tom and she then realises that he’s now David.

I can’t imagine how cathartic this must’ve been for Tennant. He was a young kid who watched Liz on the show growing up and now he’s met and gets to act alongside one of his childhood heroes. What a lucky guy

Her transition into “I thought you died” is an example of brilliant acting.
The way Sladen played Sarah Jane’s resentment and initial hostility towards being left behind and then seeing it repeat with Rose she eventually forgives The Doctor but cautions Rose that it won’t end well if she stays with him which subtly shows the different predictions for Doomsday, this is what RTD is a master of he can weave different elements while balancing them expertly
There's a LOT of amazing acting. Tennant's face when he says she looks incredible too--the fond, warm, nostalgia. Sarah Jane's subtle expression change when she says no, she doesn't--the awareness of aging and mortality. Just brilliant, all around.
So hard to believe this was only 6 years before she died, I’m glad she had her comeback and SJA, brilliant actress always missed
Honestly, I was so besotted and heartbroken when I heard the news as a kid. Completely devastated that we wouldn't get any more Sarah Jane Adventures. She was the closest thing to a human version of the doctor we got in her own way (apart from Donna but she didn't get her own show sadly)
I was very young when Sarah Jane Adventurous ended I was about 7 I didn’t know she died till I was 15

Here's a confession, i was late into becoming a whovian, and didn't know who she was. i went back and saw her original episodes with the third and fourth doctor, and loved the Sarah Jane Adventures. Elizabeth Sladen really was fantastic wasn't she

It was the Fifth Doctor who was the last incarnation to meet Sarah-Jane (she briefly interacted with him in _The Five Doctors_ ) before she met Ten in _School Reunion._ There are six regenerations (half a dozen) between Peter Davison and David Tennant (The War Doctor’s regeneration included). 😉

@@lfkpics3884 New stories retcon old ones, but they probably didnt mean this literally. How I see it, she could've meant the 8th Doctor because the events that followed was "everyone else dying" which could mean the Time War.
But with the line about leaving her in Scotland implies she last saw him as the 4th, so then that means the events of the Five Doctors never happened, or was never remembered.

"School Reunion" is my favorite episode since Doctor Who returned to television with the 9th Doctor. My first exposure to Doctor Who was in the 70s with Elisabeth and Tom and I fell for her then. When she first appeared in this episode coming down the stairs with Finch I yelled out "Holy s*** it's Sarah Jane!" as I had not known she was being brought back to the show!

When this first aired the exitement in my house was palpable, I'd only just started getting into the classic series but even then I knew who Sarah Jane and K-9 were. They were legends and seeing them was just magical.

as a new teenager one of my first crushes was Sarah Jane Smith, it was so awesome to see her again and looking as beautiful as ever, some people age well like a fine wine, she was one of those few humans blessed with those genetics.

Whether you were a kid or parent watching this on the original broadcast, this was the best moment to connect the newer viewers with the classic fans which made it feel comfortable to watch a family friendly show

This is perhaps one of the best ways Doctor Who has honored it's history. The union of New Who and Classic Who in a great crossover episode. Imagine what this meant for viewers who'd grown up on the old series?
Sarah was my companion when I was a kid. I remember watching this story with tears in my eyes.

It's not often we get emotionally attached or invested so deep with a fictional character. But she was amazing. The world became 'less' when she passed.

I watched virtually every episode of NewWho live, but always seem to have missed the huge moments! I remember we were a little bit late tuning into 'Rose', we watched 'School Reunion' on catchup and recorded 'A Good Man Goes to War' with the River reveal! 🙈 Saw them all very soon after but not seeing them "live" is a bit of a regret. This scene is epic, Sarah Jane was a wonderful link between Classic Who and New Who.
Everything feels so normal watching Sarah Jane Smith and the doctor
When I was a kid, I didn’t really know much about Classic Who, or even that it existed, but just the implication of a character from the Doctor’s past excited me. All the implied history which I didn’t even know existed at the time felt so cool and immersive. In that sense, I’m so glad this episode didn’t super clearly spell things out for newer fans, and just let them figure out the basic premise of Sarah Jane being a vague equivalent to Rose decades in her past. Really helps make the Doctor feel as old as he is.
Little known fact, the 8th Doctor is around 1700 years old. This likely means that The War Doctor started keeping track of his age from 0, making The Doctor around 2,600 years old in this episode. The 4th Doctor was about 750 years old when he regenerated, so The Doctor hasn't seen Sarah Jane in roughly 2,000 years

@@qcjimmy3452 age is pointless for the doctor now. since heaven sent you could argue the doctor is 4 billion years old.since the timeless child, it could be even more than that. we don't know how long the doctor has lived, and there's incarnations like ruth to prove that. the doctors true age is unknown, even to herself. also it's impossible for david tennants doctor to be 900 years old. the 7th doctor claims to be 953, while in voyage of the damned, 10th doctor claims to be 903. he must have started recounting at some point, and that point was probably in or after the time war. my guess is that he started counting from the moment he regenerated into the war doctor. we saw the 11th doctor age defending trenzalore, and it was confirmed that he defended trenzalore for at least 800 years. when 8 regenerates into the war doctor, you can clearly see a young john hurt. it would make sense for this to be the version of the doctor that takes up most of that number, because we saw in "rose" that the doctor seeing his ears for the first time. later that season we see him regenerate. just before claiming to be 903, he spent a year on the valiant with the master. this means that the YOUNGEST he could be at the start of his run is 900. heclaims he is 906 in the end of time. his doctor only lasted 6 years, so it's most likely that he started recounting his age when he became the war doctor

God I miss her. I remember the day she died like it was yesterday, I was 10 and in a club waiting for my mum to come back from work, and then it came on the tv...I’ll always miss her and her legacy

When I first watched this, I didn't really know who Sarah was until I saw her stand alone series on Cbbc. I just guessed (rightly) that she was an old companion.
I miss this
From Sarah’s point of view, the Doctor’s singular trip to Gallifrey somehow caused him to regenerate 6 times and according to him cost him the lives of all of his people. She knows nothing of the Time War.
Sarah Jane Smith was with 3rd Doctor, 4th Doctor, met the 5th Doctor, and worked with 10 & 11 too. There's also "Dimensions In Time" special too which had 6 and 7.. That might be a record for anyone but Clara who entangled herself through the Doctor's entire timeline.
Sarah Jane was THE doctor who girl. Not my favourite, but the best.

Here's the most important episode in Whoinverse history the day they reunited the music saying it all the haunting music of that meeting and Sarah Jane Smith's reunion with the Doctor, not her Doctor but he is.
Loved this time our Sarah Jane Smith and everyone's Doctor reunited it was fantastic. Been a while at least 30 or more years but worth every minute of seeing them chilling over old times and Sarah telling him how she missed him not visiting her once. Ah well they did meet once before on Gallifrey part of a game she must have forgotten that somehow.
Today I believe is the day she first appeared on Doctor Who all those years ago if I am not mistaken in the 70s and reunited with her first doctor on the planet Gallifrey in the mid-80s and then came K9 And Company earlier that year. And she had a TV series or two around the latter. She was never off TV or radio I think. She, her smile her image on television as the great Sarah Jane Smith brought everyone's a star to watch over the years I miss that smile of hope on Sarah Jane Adventures, especially in this brilliant episode. She is missed but never forgotten, Liz as Sarah Jane will forever be the brilliant Sarah Jane Smith the ultimate Companion.
For once, two characters in Doctor Who who waited similar lengths of time to see each other again.
