I have wondered this too! Like, i could choose something so much nicer than whatever insane outfit the stylist chose. But then again, am thinking stylists (and celebs) nowadays don't WANT to look harmonious, rather that is considered boring and blah. Looking as unique and if can, outrageous as possible, seems to be the trend now. As if, looking "unique" and "out there" is the goal, rather than looking beautiful!
I loved this video because you explained why the dress worked/didn't work with the body type and at no point did you take away from the beauty of the person and their proportions.
Really agreed with your evaluations. It seems like old Hollywood was so aware of the body types, colors, lines, cuts & overall image. They knew what suited the person and their role or personality. The clothing added so much to the overall perception of the actors and actresses. Current Hollywood & fashion designers have gone beyond the trend of doing the strange, odd, or shocking (it’s predicable and not impressive like they think), and ‘high fashion’ seems to revolve around ‘anything goes’…. Except- it really doesn’t go well at all. It’s like the story of The Emperor’s New Clothes. I’m waiting for someone in the crowd to point out how silly and wrong so many of the ‘fashions’ appear to the real world. As others have posted it’s a clothing ad - and yet- shouldn’t this be about showcasing actors and actresses as artists. That can hardly be recognized sometimes and the representation of them is masked by avant-garde clothing - which steals their spotlight or contorts it. I appreciate that your videos point out things that compliment body types, things that work against the body types & where & how to bend & customize style & fashion in an appropriate way. Like you said, when people dress right- you see the person - not just the clothes. There’s harmony in dressing for your type. It’s like an appreciation of your unique form. To be seen is one thing- but to be seen for who you are- that is something greater.
I concur. I wonder if it is due in part to home Ec being taken out of schools. I read in a book, The Lost Art of Dress by Linda Przybyszewsky that a lot of the original Home Ec teachers in the 1920's based their clothing design classes on elements of art. It is a fascinating read if you are interested in Western clothing and style through the 20th century.
Aly! Please do a review of Emily In Paris... I think part of what makes the fashion so terrible in the show is the fact that virtually all characters (apart from Sylvie) are dressed pretty much opposite to what their natural lines suggest. Lily Collins pretty much drowns in ginormous oversize car crash colour outfits she is made to wear. Thank you ❤
I think they're creating an effect with the clothes. She has a whole good-ish outfit and then there's something that kills it. It looks like she's trying too hard. Kinda like Emilia Clarke in Me Before You. She starts with gamine lines (and she looks like she is trying to hard to fit in) and her transformation moment comes when she's in the red dress that hugs her figure. Personal opinion
So true. And no one in Paris dresses like that. Parisians are known and admired for their understated elegance. I'm sure they all cringe at this representation of Paris and how people live and present themselves.
I like your look today, Aly! To the video: sometimes i really wonder, what strange decisions some stylists are making- and why the actresses don't notice that they are wearing the wrong dresses for their figure and colour?!
It is really hard to dress such large breasts in an elegant way. Nothing ever fits, she may need to have everything made for her. She always looks fabulous.
Great stuff as usual! So glad you are doing this, I feel like we are in a real season of people rejecting looking beautiful - except Salma! It’s like people aren’t sure and are trying to be a bit off and a bit flat on purpose. Go Salma she never fails to believe that beautiful is best. Looking forward to next video 🎉
Totally agreed...even when you look at fashion critics or best dressed lists...it's as if the weirder, stranger outfits that are often ugly as f*ck and look good on literally NOBODY...are the ones that are praised. And if someone is dressed classically beautiful, it's considered boring and bad. Like seriously, some of the outfits are so horrible they are neither beautiful nor sexy nor glamorous!
Whenever I see celebrities dressed for the red carpet, my mind goes instantly to their Kibbe type and lines. And yet I have never seen a fashion review on UA-cam based on Kibbe, so I'm really excited to see you do it, as you are my favourite Kibbe and generally beauty&fashion UA-camr. Loved this. I am continuously surprised how Margot Robbie always manages to wear sth that doesn't bring out her incredible beauty. It might be because Chanel doesn't suit her but then again the red Valentino curtain recently wasn't it either. That one was probably meant for a natural type but really no one would look good in it.
I suppose we can take heart that even with an army of stylists, managers, agents etc., allocated time and resources there remains areas to reconsider. Let alone for regular folk just doing their best with what’s available. Enjoyed the analysis!
This was awesome! I get so frustrated with people who rate the red carpet looks who have no idea what would actually suit the person. I myself am TR my bust is as heavy as salmas and for formal events I always struggled with stiff materials and trying to cover my cleavage with something meant for a classic (it always looked so stiff and uncomfortable on me) … now after watching tons of your videos I understand why! I Can immediately tell if a fabric, print, color or pattern will work for me.
Once again a great video. Would love to see your opinions on the upcoming oscars too. Interesting fact most of these women never dress themselves for big events. They have their stylist and manager who do deals with brands to dictate what they wear. It is very inauthentic and it shows they are following trends or looks not personal style.
The designers that are dressing the celebrities aren't thinking about what goes best with a celebrity. They designed the dress is so that they could be seen at events like this. It's not about the celebrity. It's about the fashion. However, they are certainly missing the fact that if they followed the celebrities lines, their fashion would look much better and be more appealing.
The majority of these outfits would be significantly better if the straps were shortened/the chest was higher. I actually love Selena Gomez's dress and I think it would work much better if it was just 2 inches higher! same with the woman who plays princess diana. the claire danes dress needs shorter straps and the bow needs to go(and those feathers...) and with that it would be a great improvement
True. Elizabeth Debicki (who plays Diana) is such a statuesque, effortlessly stunning woman. And they put her in these weird proportions that cut her body in half and make her look flat and droopy. Smh...
Loved this video! On a separate note, when it comes to makeup (am talking of everyday wearable makeup, not avant garde/ photoshoot makeup!) it's always a good idea to play up either lips, eyes or cheeks. Does our season and/ or essence have an impact on which feature is best to focus on? I feel like, when i want to glam it up a bit, a classic red lip with very "unfussy" eyes looks best. By unfussy eyes i mean something simple and clean, like mascara and maybe a subtle cat eye. I can take a very bright/ colourful lip (nothing toooo dark and vampy) but if my eyes are too "done" (smoky eyes, glittery eyeshadow looks, etc) i look a bit off.
Wow, thank you so much for creating this video! It's just what I've been always missing in red carpet overviews - the actual compatibility of the outfit with the person's body, not just how trendy/beautiful/extravagant the dress is. Hope you will be doing more such videos🤞 Also, I got a thought - how cool it would be if you became a celebrity body type stylist and helped people to achieve their best looks for this kind of events 😃
You are a wealth of knowledge and so well spoken! I love this hair color on you btw but I think your beauty shines with the straighter type of hairstyles
Elizabeth Dibecki's dress looks like she's about to drop her top there if she's not careful. Yikes. I would feel awkward. And Claire Danes dress, no offense, looks like a bedspread.
Hi Aly! Learning so much from you 💙 I use to think long legs were always the best and now I understand proportions and how for example it is not so nice when the illusion make longer face or shorter torso...
Thanks a lot for the Video. I agree with you in all examples...and i don't understand, why all women did Not wear better dresses...some look nearly strange...The Hollywood dream factory, behind which there is a lot of money and great designers are allowed to let off steam, is no guarantee for (good) style. I would have expected more...they should have consulted D. Kibbe...😉
If I was paying for a stylist I'd want them find the correct colors matched to my season and the right silhouette. It's amazing how wearing your correct colors can make your skin look brighter and younger . I'm a true summer , dramatic and since I've been dressing in my colors and silhouettes I get compliments how nice I look.
I love your explanations, it all makes sense. I have felt for a long time that the stylists often do not have the celebrities' best interests at heart.
Salma was just gorgeous! My least favorite was Clare Danes or Elizabeth debicki because they were so unflattering on their lovely figures. I also did not care for Selena’s.
Fabulous analysis - a good idea would be to take a dress that doesn't work and put it on the kibbe type where it would work. The white spiraling dress the worst mismatch - try to match it to the correct type - a tall dramatic perhaps?
I would love some videos on people with unique combinations of color or face and body styles that don't quite fit into a kibbe style. What if the eyes and skin are strongly opposite on the cool and warm sides? What if the face and body diverge enough to be significantly different? How do you style that and manage that? Are there any celebrities where this is true?
I feel like todays new stylists don’t follow the old rules- making so many of the actresses appear awkward and off! Or, is that the new desired effect?
Kaley Cuoco’s character in 8 Simple Rules used to say she was a summer so it’s interesting that you said she didn’t really suit the cool purple tone of her dress. Maybe the writers of the show were wrong? 😅
I think the writers were just wrong on this one. That tends to happen a lot. A lot of writers don't pay any attention to whether or not the comments they are making on the appearance of the character actually lines up with the person portraying them. A good example of one I hear a lot is a character mentioning their weight. The character is not meant to be lying, or even just wrong about their own weight for whatever reason, but you can clearly see by looking at the actor that that is not what they weigh. The writers simply didn't think about it.
Yes Margot literally gives me Soft Natural vibes! I am soft natural and years ago, I remember watching wolf of wall Street and when she had that "scene" I remember saying to my friends that WOW! That's similar to my body! and we all laughed...But it's amazing! I just got typed by Merriam Style and she said I'm soft natural. So that makes sense now! First of all, even though you are always gorgeous, Aly you look absolutely stunning in this video!😍 Love your waves! I agree that most celebrities at this level should have better stylists helping them pick gowns better suited for their body types! Not only are most of the dresses featured in this video not suited to the body types, the coloring seems so blah, washing out these beautiful women! Their stylists need to also study color seasons. Many of the women who wore darker color palettes in their seasonal colors, looked beautiful, regardless of whether the silhouette of the dress suited them or not. I don’t know why designers don’t raise horizontal lines of strapless/bustier dresses! So many distort the bustlines, as you pointed out, and look like they are going to fall off. I was disappointed with Margot Robbie’s and Michelle Williams’ dresses.😢
I always wondered how the stylists don’t see how unharmonious their choices are
I have wondered this too! Like, i could choose something so much nicer than whatever insane outfit the stylist chose. But then again, am thinking stylists (and celebs) nowadays don't WANT to look harmonious, rather that is considered boring and blah. @@minervarose7664 that makes sense!
yes they dont understand less is more, especially french style...One detail can pop beautifully.
Because people want to experiment with fashion and styling plus try various trends
Because they are paid to showcase a dress selected by a specific brand

Probably because they trust the “professionals”. But clearly the professionals don’t really know what their doing 😂❤
They don't get to choose what they want to wear. Brands lend them a dress
Please do a style analysis of Salma Hayek!! She has always dressed so well for TR and is an example I look to for inspiration!

@@maryokeefe5351 Yeah, I definitely understand that too. I also have large breast & it can be hard to find clothes that fits them and is flattering.

True, and it is so hard to find clothes that fit a larger bust.
