      I was there on the pit wall while it was happening, watching on the multi-panel TV feed behind the Ferrari team as they came around that last lap - we lost sight of them on the trackside cameras as they came through 17 due to the dust and haze at night, so this feed right here is what we were all watching. Needless to say when Jaime made that pass on Jorg the Ferrari team exploded, it was pretty epic "down-&-dirty" GT racing.

    I was standing above the _Risi Competizione_ pits watching this unfold before my eyes. I could see their headlights as the two cars made their way around turn 17 coming onto the front straight. It was difficult to tell which car was which, or who was ahead, but I could definitely see them touch each other as they went wide around the final turn. I thought it was going to result in a huge accident just before the finish line! Absolutely incredible racing moment.

    In my opinion, the best finish to a road race EVER. (Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch at Darlington in 2003 beats it out for the best ever... but only by the slimmest of margins. And Sebring was a better race--and this coming from someone who started out with NASCAR!)
    No penalties were issued; the officials ruled it hard, clean, take-no-prisoners racing. THIS is why I love this sport.

    Ahh good point... just checked the video again, it's Melo who fought for the win. My bad - the rest of my statements still stand, though.
    I was standing next to the winning Audi R-10 on pit lane snapping pictures at the time, so I didn't see the battle first-hand, and I didn't see who got out of the Ferrari when it pulled up behind me; there were many people in a very small space! Anyway, Melo, Salo, both are world class drivers (and Jorg in the Porsche too, for that matter).

    What a great lap and an even better last pass. Both drivers were driving aggresively it was Jorge race to lose and he lost it, but not running a tighter line through the last turn. You people complaining of the bumping are either not familiar with racing or are HPDE weenies who aren't familiar with any aspect of racecraft. Ask any driver in the paddock if they would have done the same, and I guarantee you they will say "heck yes".

    In the end Jaime Melo Cheated. You can see how his car unloads to impede the Porsche when they were next to each other. Bergmeister held the outside line.
    It was deliberate. The race stewards decided it would be too controversial to penalize Melo. It was adorable how a simple illegal move was permitted to win that race.

    Proves NASCAR and ALMS are pretty similar: you get close and exciting finishes!

  • @TheSeraphym
    @TheSeraphym 17 років тому

    I'm referring to the first contact, at 2:07 - Jorg clearly comes in. There's nothing wrong with that move, totally fine, but with Melo still fighting that led to contact. When they track out at 2:10 and hit door-to-door...remember, Melo was on double-stint tires, which didn't have much grip left, so I see Melo simply running out of track, with Jorg's Porsche in the way. Holding his line AFTER the contact, forcing Jorg to pull in behind, is the really aggressive part. Still legal, though.

  • @TheSeraphym
    @TheSeraphym 17 років тому

    I believe you are referring to contacts at 2:07 and 2:10. At 2:07, the Ferrari's LF fender hits the Porsche's RR fender - that's wheel-to-wheel in a turn, and legal. Jorg tried to cut of Melo's line, and Melo stayed on it (Melo cornered from a better turn-in spot, but had worn-out tires). The contact at 2:10 is completely DOOR-TO-DOOR...fully legal, too. You say it was illegal, but IMSA has NOT overturned the results, declaring otherwise. It's simply a classic GT last-turn battle.

    Don't call anyone an ass before you know all the facts. This is not a privateer class only. There's heavy Porsche and Ferrari (and Panoz) factory support in GT2. For a while Porsche provided factory-supported drivers for teams adhering to Porsche's 'winning formula'.

  • @TheSeraphym
    @TheSeraphym 17 років тому

    "By your logic, Jorg should have tapped Melo a few times" ... No, THAT would be illegal if it was intentional. From what I see in this video, Jaime was faster out of the turn, and Jorg was there, still holding on to the outside of the turn, pushed wide by the contact at 2:07. When they hit at 2:10, JAIME is on the racing line, and JORG is wide. The track wall then narrows there on the left by just over a car width, so Jorg had no place to go without ducking back in. That's racing.

  • @TheSeraphym
    @TheSeraphym 17 років тому

    Dang 500 char limit. At 3:13, I see them touch, also, but there's nothing wrong with that contact, either. Melo was to the outside, and Jorg came out on him. Where Melo turned in immediately after that contact shows you the line through 17. I see Jorg trying to push Melo wide on the entry to 17, and Melo ducking back underneath. If Melo HAS to turn in or be in the marbles, he did the right thing...he MAKES room for himself, classic GT driving. That's why sportscars are my favs, even over F1.

  • @csquirrel
    @csquirrel 17 років тому

    The Porsche did get knocked around by the Ferrari and I'd be pissed if I were the Porsche driver, but I would have done the same thing if I were the Ferrari. Good race.
    And F1 drivers do NOT scratch each other up... it's open wheel racing. In all the close finishes I've ever watched they will get close to knocking, but flinch off at the last second... same desired effect, but definitely not bumping.

    The Ferrari deserved to go into the wall ;). If Bergmeister would have driven like Melo, Melo would have been in the wall much earlier in the lap. But a lot of the times it's the driver that is the most brutal that will win. Sadly gentleman drivers don't always win.

      Probably because he learned from this race that you can shove/wreck someone out of the way and nobody will do anything about it.

    • @mauryhatcher
      @mauryhatcher 6 років тому

      +Starky513 There's an expression in GT racing: 8 wheels turn better than 4.
      The marshals there deemed it "fair racing contact" in that final corner, because if you look the Porsche comes in some on the Ferrari's line mid-corner (right when the camera angle changes as they pass under the bridge) probably to make Jaime in the Ferrai check up some and fall back... and that mistake by Jorg caused him to go wide when Jaime stayed in the slot and tapped the Porsche's rear right corner. Then Jaime just capitalized on that like any good GT racer should do and drove the Porsche to the outside where the tire wall comes in and the Porsche had to check up and duck under.
      Jaime's tires were totally shot on that Ferrari by that time too, so it was very impressive that he held his position going through 17 against Jorg in the Porsche, and then kinda "turnabout is fair play" when he drove the Porsche outside the line afterwards.

    Dear 1bangkok in Cina Porsche GT3 was excluded from the results (was lower then legal ride height)and Ferrari won. F430 won also in Silverstone and Bucarest. In FIA Championship 2006 F430 won 9 times on 10 races and won also American lemans series. GT3 997 is not able to match a Ferrari F430. This is a fact.

  • @LolaJudd

    ever recall when robin liddell was driving a Panoz Esperante GTLM at Road Atlanta in spring, 2005 and got hit by a porsche? there has been much more dirty racing tactics in ALMS before. as for the Fiat/Ferrari comment, a porsche would be a rebadged vw in that sense. Jaime Melo and Mika Salo have the first four races of the ALMS season with their # 62 F430 GTC. If Ferrari domination continues in FIA GT, LMS, and ALMS, Porsche should reconsider the rear engine layout.

    "in the sole opinion of the Race Director and/or Stewards" ... Thank you. Couldn't have said it better than the GCR myself. So, by that definition, the RACE DIRECTOR or STEWARDS decide what is "avoidable contact" and what is a legal "racing incident" - i.e. NOBODY on this FORUM. THEY didn't call it a foul, so it is NOT. Done. End of discussion.
    That was my point all along, using the reasoning I gave for it. THEY have their own reasons, but I don't know if they're the same as mine or not.

  • @TheSeraphym
    @TheSeraphym 17 років тому

    Yeah, IMSA is playing favorites. You've got it.
    [/sarc]
    If it was avoidable, and not simply the case of two drivers competing for the same area of race track (which is like 99% of all incidents) or not of Jorg attempting to shut the door on Jaime... then where is the penalty from IMSA? I like Jorg, he's fast, but he didn't get "wronged."
    What do I know about racing? I've grown up around and involved in it my entire life (so not much according to you I guess).

    Bah, that's called GT2 racing for the WIN at the 12Hrs of Sebring! You must not watch much Le Mans or ALMS racing if you think contact in fierce battles is rare. The 3+ body kits the teams keep in the pits with them say differently. I was there, on pit lane, for much of the race...contact is common. This move was aggressive, but allowable. The fact that IMSA did not overturn the result proves this point. GT racers have to be able to slug it out sometimes, and ex-F1 Salo certainly did that!

    Take your Ferrari Derangement Syndrome elsewhere... not one driver on the grid would have done any differently than Salo. He gets paid to WIN, within the rules. That IMSA did not overturn the results shows that this move was completely within the realm of door-to-door racing. Mika forced Jorg to take a shallow entry line into 17, and came back underneath...classic move. He just needed Jorg's car to help him finish the turn! Very common in GT. Very nice driving by both, in any case!

There is nothing in a Nascar "car" that will trickle into future consumer vehicles. Porsche and Ferrari makes street legal cars today with the racing development of yesterday, Nascar is a joke.
