This is SO helpful! Thank you :) I noticed on one of my plants, that got mites before going dormant, one of its traps was deformed. It was labelled 'dionea mix' when I bought it, so I thought it could just be a weird cultivar thrown in there, like the alien one, as no other traps were like that - but I think now it was being that badly affected by the mites!
Doing the fridge method you mentioned me trying out. My flytrap doesn't look like yours with that many leaves most have died off but it doesn't look completely dead like some of those pictures either. The center still has a few new leaf sprouts that never fully grew out and it has a very small bunch of baby traps growing off the side. Nothing has either grown nor died since I've placed it in the fridge. Looks like its in suspended animation now hopefully its gone dormant and not nearly dead
Great vid watching from Philippines 🇵🇭😁👍... we still have so much to learn... specially to induce dormancy or not.... it’s actually confusing out here...
Thank you for showing examples of healthy dormant plants and dying plants. My poor thing is on the brink of death and here I was thinking it was going dormant but I've probably actually been drowning it. Let's hope I can save it. It's about 6 weeks away from winter in Australia, would this be a bad time to repot?
I also find it’s kinda normal for the plant to make some wierd deformed leaves/traps near the end of dormancy. After dormancy it should grow back as usual, if not, somethings up (probably the soil)
Hi! I live in the U..S. Territory Guam in the Pacific Ocean. I have a typical Venus flytrap and a B52 trap. Do you know how I can get different seeds for other types or cultivars like cup trap, saw tooth or there’s this one with a German name like Schepp 1? When I checked online no one will ship outside U.S. I know they say don’t trust ordering seeds from eBay or Amazon . I just recently started raising flytraps as a hobby. I subscribed to your channel and enjoy watching it. Your advice I trust. Do you have seeds that you share or sell? Thanks
It can mean a lot of things. Most of the time it’s journal shedding if it’s just one or two leaves. If there’s more it can signal a rot issue, or hard water damage. Hard to tell without pictures or a detailed history of the plant over the past two or so months.
Do you cut off the blackend venus fly traps? I have a bunch that have turned brown/black but some green at the base. Do I cut these off? Will the brown/black ones come back??
great video as always, Very vluable!! do you treat your sphagnum moss with a fungicide to help with algae/ fungus that can grow on the moss? I have a few spots of Algae growing on plants moss, should i do something about this or is it harmless.
Water Prop Babe I treat with azoxystrobin before dormancy (if you’ve seen the “crazy growth boost” video of mine, since it is a fungicide. Typically people use sulfur. That won’t do anything for algae or pest moss on top of flytrap pots. For that I just remove the top layer of sphagnum and replace it.
@@TheBonsaiJungle I did see that video, yes. I was very intrigued by it, but I’ve yet to try it on my VFT’s...something to remember for next year! Should I only use azoxystrobin right before dormancy, or can I try this in the beginning of the summer (out of dormancy)? Thanks 😊😊
Water Prop Babe you can use it multiple times a year for boosting the growth, however I just use it as a preventative autumn fungicide these days trying to keep my growing habits as “natural” as possible.
Great video! I wish you could save mine!! It's got a few green leaves left but I'm worried I'm about to lose it completely. 😢 It's almost a year old. Always been inside.
I'm new to this. I got my Venus in Dec and growing on kitchen window sill. It has grown 3 new traps. I'm now learning it's supposed to go into dormancy. So do I move it to a colder room and how often do I add water? I gave it a meal worm for food and those traps are now turning black. So did I kill it? It has three little ones that look good. I feel so bad now.
I am using the refrigerator method. What I noticed is after one week of being in the fridge the traps are closing up like they are going to sleep or something. Is this normal? The plant is still in its pot inside a large ziploc bag with the bag spaced out and not touching the plant. Thoughts?
I have a case of mealybugs on my trap... At this point it honestly may be too late. However for future plants, do you have any experience with mealybugs on your guys?
thanks! great info👍🏾 this past summer I was advised to use Bioadvanced Rose and Flower bug killer to kill off the aphids that attacked my VFT and Sundew.. it's killed 3 of the 4 Sundews (slowly) and the VFT bounced back. what do you suggest to use against aphids and white fly? I'm a first time grower😉
So what's the difference between these plants and other perennials like hostas or daffodils? They die completely to the ground in winter and coming bouncing back in spring. I'm creating an outdoor bog garden and expect the plants in it to go through the same winter sleep.
During optimal dormancy they wont die back to the ground, but retain the rosette of short leaves. They also need more cold protection than the daffodils or hosta do.
@@joelrodriguez5680 I would grow them thorough the winter indoors under a yescom 225, however if you go let them go dormant but protect them from going below 35*F they should be fine.
I don’t know much about flytraps but I recently bought one from the garden centre and there were three of them that all were flowering but they had no leaves and the traps all died. I don’t know if i can help it or if it’s doomed. The flower stem is strong, green and looks healthy but yeah.
There’s a chance. If the rhizome is still firm and it has at least some partial green leaves of can recover. Most likely you would need to skip dormancy this year though, and get it under bright LED light
I’m very busy and have hundreds of plants I’m growing (if not thousands at this point) so I leave them for weeks, potentially the whole winter and just spray with fungicide if any mold outbreak happens. I would expect a normal person with a few plants to remove the leaves every 3-4 weeks. Usually there’s only 3-5 black leaves per month if you don’t let the work pile up.
Yes. That just concentrates the minerals even more. You have to capture what evaporates, not the stuff that’s left behind. That’s why distilled water works because the steam that gets caught and cooled down back to water has almost zero dissolved solids while the water left behind in the still or the pot has all the junk.
