    Countries that can't leave them outside for dormancy are countries that are tropical, or often get below freezing in winter. Tropical countries use fridge method (above), and extremely cold countries should bring the plants inside and put them somewhere cold inside. Good video!
    For VFTs, for fridge dormancy I drain off excess water from
    the pots, hit them with a SULFUR based fungicide and place in zip
    lock bags and pop them in the fridge for 3 - 3 1/2 months. I
    occasionally check them (once a month) for fungus and hit with the
    fungicide if needed. Late winter around February/March I take them
    out and clean them up, hit them with SULFUR based fungicide again and
    place in a south and west window and some under florescent and white
    'daylight' LED lights until night time temps. regularly stay above
    freezing then slowly acclimate them to full outdoor Sun. I've been
    using this method for over 12 years with no losses.

      Do you put them in a zip lock bag pot and all? Do you take them out of the pots? If taking them out of the pots, do you wrap them in any soil or keep them completely bare root? If wrapped, is long fiber spagnum moss alright to use? If potted is the spagnum moss completely dry or damp? How dry do you let it get? Completely dry or just moist before putting in the fridge? Do you water it at all during dormancy? Do you water the fridge temperature plant with room temperature distilled water or water the plant with the same temperature refrigerated distilled water?

    I cut several flytrap flower stalks this year, but I had no idea that I should have held onto them and put them in soil. Thanks for the tip, I had no idea they could be used to grow a new plant!

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  4 роки тому +6

      Ah damn! At least you know now :) It's not always a guarantee, but about 10% of the time they turn into a new VFT just like with succulents. It's best to let the stalk get to about 3/4 inches as this means there's alot of energy in the stalk that can go towards a new plant.

    Thanks for your help! I live in South Dakota USA winters here can get to -10 below zero F. I really struggled with keeping my VFT alive after I got it. With that said I want to keep it alive this winter. If I put it in the basement, it will stay cool, do I continue to keep the tray wet?
    When do I cut the flower? Do I put the flower in dirt or spagham moss / carnivorous plant soil? Do I keep it cool as well? Sorry for all the questions but I really want this thing to live!
    Bless you! Cher

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Cher! Wow that’s cold. Yes, In winter put it in the basement. (Or a room with a south facing window that stays above freezing, so a cold room in the house with a window is possible ) otherwise basement is fine with some extra lighting. Yes, in winter keep the soil moist. A little drier than summer. This means, in summer maybe you refill the tray once every day. Now in winter, once every 3 days. This prevents the root rot. So less water but water in the same manner (water into a tray, let it soak up etc). Cut the flower when it is about 1 inch in length. Shove this flower into carnivorous plant soil (sphagnum moss or peat and sand in a ratio of 1:1). Hopefully a new plant will come from that flower! The plant should only flower in spring so keep the flower with the main plant wherever the main plant goes.

      Hi. All good here, thanks! You can leave them outside to get rain, or bring them under cover when it does rain (your choice). I don’t like them in the rain, because the soil gets splashed out of the pot, but I have left them out in the rain many times before. It doesn’t affect them at all, they actually like it!

    What about cool temperate zone in Victoria mate? Do you think I should be ok to leave it outside? We rarely get below zero. I might put mine outside I think cos it’s not doing well inside: it’s probably too warm in the house.
    I was going to put it at the side of the house so it gets no frost from above and it more protected from the cold but it will still be cold enough to go dormant.

    I’m currently growing my Venus fly trap under a grow light inside, at what temperature should I still be using my grow light when doing dormancy? Or can I just put my plant in a cold window that’s the right temperature and be ok with the amount of sun that comes in from the window? Grow light would be set on a shorter time on light timer to simulate shorter days if I needed to used it. My zone is roughly 2a-3d I don’t know exactly which one it is but it’s one of the two zones I’m new to owning a Venus fly trap and this fall will be my first time doing dormancy.

    Hello From Canada!! I loved your video, it was by far the most identical I've seen so far. I just bought a Venus fly Trap & have acouple questions. It is mid October & my plant is not showing signs of dormancy. Whats the best way/time to "put it to bed". Also all the traps are open, is it hungry? Thanks again for the great vid, looking forward to hearing from you!!

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy the video. If your plant gets sunlight, it will go dormant by itself. They go dormant in autumn when there is less sunlight, there is nothing you need to do to make them go dormant besides keep them outside. Dormancy doesn’t always result in a plant dying down to nothing, sometimes they just make smaller and fewer traps less often. However in Canada I would expect the plant to die down to nothing in the middle of winter. Just give it more time :)
      Your plant is not hungry, don’t worry about it. It catches its own food. If you want to feed it one insect for fun, you can do so. But only feed the plant once every 2 weeks

      First off, make sure you’re in a climate that would require you to use fridge dormancy, fridge dormancy is generally a last resort. If I were to do it, I’d just put the pot and it’s tray as in into the fridge. The water temperature doesn’t matter. Just keep it damp, not wet.

    Very informative and I plan on using your videos when I next purchase a VFT. What I can't seem to figure out/find though is just exactly how do you tell a dormant plant from a dead one. Should there still be leaves/traps, or do those die off only to regrow during next growth cycle? Thanks in advance.

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  3 роки тому +1

      Generally a dormant plant will have some leafs on the surface, if it’s very cold it may all die off. If you want you can take the plant out of the soil, if the rhizome is white and solid it’s alive. Otherwise if it’s black, it’s dead

    I love venus fly traps!! I recently got my hands on a beautiful plant but I'm worried about the winter! I live in Canada, in an apartment, and I've always kept them in the biggest window with loads of sun, only watering tops once a week. But I'm worried about them going into dormancy and how to treat them the best while they're out! I considered the fridge strategy and keeping it in its pot, but I also wondered if reducing water and keeping it near the window would be cold enough?! Also, should I be feeding them insects during this time?

    • @WCiossek

      I live in northern Germany, where the winters are very long, very wet, and severe freezes and thaws alternate constantly. This is very deadly for Venus fly traps. I have owned a Venus Flytrap for 53 years which has produced many offspring. This allowed me to experiment with dormancy. Dormancy is fatal to Venus flytraps for long winter periods, as they have a very difficult time recovering from it in the spring. The short summer is not enough for them to be able to build up enough substance. In addition, the sun hardly shines in summer. For these reasons, I overwinter the Venus flytrap at a temperature of 25°C in artificial light indoors. As a result, it grows like in summer and forms very strong plants. I haven't lost a single plant without dormancy in the last 53 years!
      Without artificial light, they form very wide leaf spikes in order to capture as much light as possible. The traps get smaller and in May until October I put them outdoors and they can recover very well.

    I live in Lithuania, winters here commonly get to around -30°C. Thankfully my flytrap grows indoors since I live in an apartment without a porch. And there's no heating here so the whole apartment is relatively cold.
    However, how can you tell if your flytrap is going dormant versus it dying? The symptoms seem similar, I don't want to do nothing if it's dying thinking that it's just dormancy, and I don't want to do something drastic if it's just snoozing lol
    Thanks!

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  Рік тому

      True, the best way to tel if it’s going dormant if the leaves are going black from the tips to the middle, and the middle stays green and there’s always growth coming out. The growth will be tiny and very small. If it’s dying it’s from the middle outwards. However if it’s getting the correct care and it’s autumn, it’s likely going dormant. Send a picture on Instagram if you need help identifying anything

It’s not really a natural environment inside and temps are way warmer in here so yeah I better put it outside and I might pot it up into a bigger pot and new peat moss and I will also mix some sand too. 1) I've seen videos of Venus flytraps reacting to insects, catching them really quickly. But when I fed mine a fly I've killed, I had to poke the trap a little in order for it to close and digest the fly. Is this a sign of dormancy?
    2) Right now it's October and I just bought it a few days ago. Temperatures are around 10-20°C (I live in eastern Europe) should I start leaving them outside?
    3) Do dormant traps need much sunlight? Because I'm living in an apartment and I don't get much sunlight in my house, like, only 1 hour in a room a day.

      You should always feed your plant moving prey, as it needs movement to trigger the traps to close. This is not directly a sign of dormancy. Cooler weather makes traps close slower, and cool weather comes in autumn and winter. And winter and autumn mean less sunlight, and therefore, the lessened sunlight will trigger dormancy
      You should always leave your VFT outside. They should be grown outside in full sunlight year round and only moved inside if the temperature gets less than 0 Celsius or more than 40 Celsius.
      Dormant VFT don’t need much sunlight, but they do still need it as the changes in the amount of light throughout the seasons will cause it to go to go dormant, wake up and grow, flower etc. for dormancy they’ll be fine with less sunlight but you should still try get it to the sunniest south facing position you have

      Your plant is most likely dormant already, they can still grow very small traps very slowly. This is also dormancy, it’s a spectrum. Essentially the plant grows smaller and less and sometimes not at all. That temperature is fine to keep it outside. Unless the pot gets knocked over due to the wind, there’s no problems. If you need to bring it indoors, a room that stays cold will work, if that means opening a window and closing the door to that room, that will work. I’m happy to help if you have more questions :)

So a few years ago I left my venus fly trap to go dormant, and it got rid of all the traps and leaves. In mid april it started blooming (now I know to cut off the flower haha), and after it bloomed it died. I thiiiiiiink this might be because the plant redirected all the energy into the flower and had no leaves to feed on sun to survive the awakening haha. For these reasons, I overwinter the Venus flytrap at a temperature of 25°C in artificial light. As a result, it grows like in summer and forms very strong plants. I haven't lost a single plant without dormancy in the last 53 years!

    1. The cold weather makes them slow way down or even stop.
    2. There are no insects out during winter. If something sets the trap off, it's a twig or a leaf blown by the wind. The plant would be wasting its energy closing the trap.

      To answer your questions:
      1) It’s not so much about the cold weather, as it is the reduced cellular activity due to the decreased light (ie. Less energy). During winter the plant stores this energy in the rhizome and less is used in the traps, therefore meaning less trap closing and slower speeds.
      2) Yes, there are less to no bugs in winter. Therefore, the only thing that would set a trap off during winter would be a leaf/twig etc. in turn, yes it would be a waste of energy. But once again, the plant is storing it’s energy during winter, or rather, not using energy during winter, and this is the reason as to why it doesn’t close / closed slowly. Not so much as it would be a waste of energy, but rather a consequence of the decreased energy expenditure that naturally occurs within the plant cells due to decreased photo periods, and subsequently, their dormancy :)

    What is the dormancy. For if you're in Seattle Washington

      If it gets below 0 Celsius, then move them indoors to a room that is unheated (garage) and sit the plant on a south facing window until it gets warmer than 0 Celsius again

    On the west coast US the best option is just the photoperiod. It’s mid October and still it’s 90+ F down to sub 70 on the daily. Relying on the cold is just not doable and the fridge method is a last resort because the cool moist environment is a death trap for the flytrap as it’ll grow mold like crazy (yes, I found out the hard way). Outside not an option/unreliable, fridge too dangerous. Fuck it. No light for the VFT. Last thing it needs is for one day being virtually frozen and then it’s 85 F. Shit will go into shock.

      Yep I do agree which is why I always try to explain to people that photoperiod is the most important factor and that the fridge method should only really be used for tropical climates.

    How do they get water?

      Sit the pot inside of a water bowl 24/7, that’s how you water them :)

    I don’t know if you will see my comment, but I just received my venus flytraps and am still learning. Do you think it is okay if they receive little to no light while they are dormant? I am planning to place them in the little room right next to the entrance, which usually hovers around 0°C, but has almost no light at all. Should I find a better option, or will they be okay? Thank you in advance.

      I am also considering fridge dormancy. You mentioned it only should be 4 weeks, opposed to regular dormancy period of 3-4 months. Why is that?

      Yes, little to no light in dormancy is ok, but it would be better if they received a little bit of light if possible. If you can ensure the temperature is not going to be at freezing every night, then it's ok. But if it is freezing, the freezing of the water will kill the plant over time. 1 degree or more is better. freezing every now and then is also ok, but not for extended periods of time.
      I suggested the 4 weeks for the people who live in tropical climates, as they would have about 3 months of slightly less sunlight, in the middle of these 3 months, the plant will be in the fridge. This acts as a very short autumn, winter and then spring. But you can extend this length of time depending on your environment. As i mentioned, i'm not the best with fridge dormancy, but there are links in the description they may help and a pinned comment that is useful if i'm not mistaken. If you have more questions i'm happy to help.

      The Flytrap Garden actually, thank you so much for your help - it was very informative😊 I am an idiot and have been watering my venus fly traps with spring water for 3 days... hopefully it will survive.
