    I love my plants dearly and so many of them at that! But my husband is only really interested in venus fly traps , he’s commented how they are pretty cool lol, so I decided to get him one but i didnt know how to transplant it from a medium to moss so thank you so much! I hope he likes it!

      Brilliant! Let me know how you get on or if you have another questions, remember to give them water very low in minerals, like Revers osmosis, rain water or distilled! aim to keep the media moist but not wet and you should be good! Ill have more care videos out in the future 😁

    My Dad sent me the link to this video and I planted my first Venus Fly traps following your directions. They have been outside in Virginia in the USA and have almost tripled in size! The Sphagnum moss really is a great substrate from my limited experience with it. Thanks for the educational videos 👍🏻

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  2 роки тому

      thanks Ian, yes it is a nice substrate indeed. its best I believe in climates where the sun and temps are not too brutal otherwise it can dry out too fast and the moss tends to deteriorate much faster also.

    Fantastic! I have managed to turn 1 flytrap into 3 using carnivorous plant compost but this method looks a lot simpler and less messy. I may have missed it, but did you put drainage holes at the bottom of the cups?

      I've never heard of this LoneWolf, and neither from anyone in the carnivorous plant community. It sounds like hogwash, sphagnum moss naturally contains iodine, has been used for centuries as bandage packer to keep wounds clean as it has antifungal properties. Buy a good sphagnum moss, the new Zealand stuff is very good.

    I'm super new to having plants (and keeping them alive) but I was given a venus fly trap and it's a bunch of them all squished together. They all seem droopy and don't respo d when flies land 9n them. Is it even still alive?

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  2 роки тому

      hard to say, Venus flytraps will be entering dormancy now and they do tend to slow down a little with there trapping mechanism. However a slow trap can be signs that the plant is not getting enough direct strong light. Venus flytraps love strong direct light, many think they make good semi shade window plants but this is a big misconception more light the better! It could also be suffering from incorrect watering, make sure they are receiving rain water or reverse osmosis, distilled. Generally tap water is very high in salts, which will kill the plant. or it could be receiving too much water or too little... 🤣 I know... they temperamental little things. shoot me a pic on twitter or insta, links are in the description if you like.

    Yo Alex! I use the same brand of moss and basically do the same thing you are doing. I re-potted most of mine in that moss this year, except for a few. That brand (Besgrow) is really good. My flytraps are really starting to take off now under the lights, I'll be acclimating them t outdoor Sun in the next week or so! 13 years for me growing these plants!

      Nice one Tommy! I think it's 12 years for me, I remember finding flytrapcare.com and was like oh wow a community of people that actually are as obsessed as I am...lol. Before that I would buy a plant at the garden center and they would just be dead a few weeks later and I couldn't fathom it. I'm trying a few media's this year, LFS, Coco pith with silica which I had since last year with nice results and I'll try Coco pith with silica with some blond peat mixed in also. Need to plant my seeds also. Keep putting it off...

    Hi, I enjoyed this video but I have a few questions, are you using rain water or distilled water to soak the moss? Can you reuse the moss if it drys out? How often do you change the moss? Sorry if I missed that information if it was given in the video. I have vft and I think it's time move to a bigger pot. She's in a 3inch but she is growing so nice, she been eating good too lol no I don't feed her at all she gets on her own! Thanks for the information provided.

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  2 роки тому +1

      To soak the moss, rain/ distilled/ reverse osmosis will be all fine, the same water you use to water the plants. The moss can be rehydrated if it dries out and it depends on your climate and how long the moss lasts. in a cooler climate where the sun is not so strong and intense, most can last a long time and if you top it off with live sphagnum, that can look beautiful, and it's alive and will keep growing. Here where I live tho... the temp is so high in summer and the sun so strong it deteriorates the sphagnum much faster and I can see some of my pots from last year, I reckon next year I will have to re-pot. I will lily plant them into a Coco quire and silica mix that I have the others in. Coco quire needs a lot of pre-treatment though before it can be safely used as it's full of salt. I would just stick to sphagnum if I were you and you seeing good results. New Zealand Sphagnum is the best.

    New to it from USA I used peat at bottom so moss on top and around the plant root but I didn’t rap it like a taco I just stuffed it in the whole I hope they make it got them from hardware store soil was turning black lost like two traps but I fill the four remaining traps and looks like it helped the flower spike grow pretty long after the first couple feedings I cut off just cuz I replanted and I was in bad shape but looking good now we will see

    • @GreenthumbsGarden

    what water do u use for venus flytrap? people say cant use tap water, if so, should i buy distill water from supermarket? also if i have to use grow led for it, how many hours per day should i give them?

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  3 роки тому

      I run my light for 16 hours a day and have a few small vft divisions under it im bringing on as well as other things. Yes in general you can not use tap water because it is very hard, meaning it has a high mineral content. there are areas that do have tap water very low in minerals and can be used for vfts. but in most places, the tap water is not adequate. Yes, distilled water will work well, once you start growing your collection though it might be more economical to install a reverse osmosis system. you can also collect rainwater and use this.

    Thank you, the first google result and this answered everything, no need to look further, I bought a VFT last week here in South Africa and decided to transfer it to my own pot as i did not like the pot it came in. I made so many mistakes during that process and my plant started turning dull from what was bright green because i added potting soil from our garden and I used wellpoint water.
    Thanks to your video I have just done replanting it in Peat and Pearlite and already it looks better. I could not find Spaghnum 4 hours at 4pm so i urgently bought peat, the plant looks happier now.

They are ideal as they insulate very well, especially here as it gets extremely hot in summer. Also they are deep and Venus Flytraps like Deep pots.

    Great info. Question: Do you water these from the top or just sit them in some water?

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  2 роки тому +1

      Both but recently I been bottom watering much more often. Top watering is more time consuming and you want to avoid wetting the crown and do it early in the day so the sun can dry them off and it does not promote rot of fungus. Top watering has the benefit of clearing away mineral build up provided you discard the water that's coming out of the bottom. Bottom watering is faster, and helps keep the surface drier so as to avoid fungus issues, but in time, depending on water mineral content, even though very low, in time can build up to dangerous levels and it helps to flush the soil out from time to time.
