- A video on how to give your venus flytrap a dormancy period using a refrigerator. If you want to spray with a fungicide periodically I recommend you get one safe for venus flytraps, such as:

Here's how I've been doing it for years: For VFTs, in mid - October I drain off excess water from the pots, hit them with a SULFUR based fungicide and place in zip lock bags and pop them in the fridge for 3 - 3 1/2 months. I occasionally check them (once a month) for fungus and hit with the fungicide if needed. Late winter around February/March I take them out and clean them up, hit them with SULFUR based fungicide again and place in a south and west window and some under florescent and white 'daylight' LED lights until night time temps. regularly stay above freezing then slowly acclimate them to full outdoor Sun. I've been using this method for 12 years with no losses.
Which brand of sulfur powder do you use?

Hey dude I did this last winter and it worked well for me. Difference is that I shut the lid tight with no holes because I didn't want them to get dry in the fridge. Didn't have any issues.

It makes a huge difference hearing from someone who has had years of experience rather than someone who is just passing on information they’ve only heard about themselves. I lost many of my VT this year because it wasn’t cold enough here in sub tropical australia. Just because I think it’s cold in “winter” doesn’t mean they do. Also I enjoyed seeing how confidently you handle your plants, I’ve been way too fragile and anxious with them.

yes, it needs to be dormant for 3-4 months.

Great advice! Here in NJ I just put em in the garage. They get a few hours of indirect light through a narrow window but really it's mostly dark from Nov to April. I top-water the traps throughout the winter and spring and they bounce right back!

I HAVE Plastic wrap over them. 5 weeks in with 2 leaves and 1 trap on all 16 of them. At what time do you take the wrap off? Also how soon can I start Maxsea fertilizer them to help them out a little?? (1/4 teaspoon to 1 gal) ??
I am from the philippines I have a pet VFT and there is no winter here do I still need to put them in the fridge??
DJ- LS it’s debatable. Some will say yes some will say no. In tropical areas that don’t really have a difference in temperature or sunlight hours at any point in the year the plants won’t go dormant, however since you have a constant high amount of light they should be fine. This is why some claim that flytraps can grow indoor year round as long as they are under strong LED lights to keep giving them energy.

I am in eastern Iowa, and have a detached unheated garage. Thinking you have similar winter temps in Chicago, and wondered if my situation would work for garage dormancy there, or if I should stick with the refrigerator plan. Thanks!
It may get a bit cold during the super low temps of a polar vortex, but otherwise the detached garage should be fairly decent for overwintering.
I've seen a couple of these fridge videos but no one talks about out of dormancy. I was told use spag moss in a bag after watered n a light squeeze. I did that from California carnivores n now my one got moldy n my other just looks dead. I had I guess a regular standard flytrap and a b52 large red n green one. Both are reduced in size. I got rid of some dark ones that are dry as hay n the ryzones look fine but like a 5th of the size. The moss stayed moist so they didn't dry out but they look in pretty poor shape compared to what they used to look like. I got them for mother's day last year. I want to still save them. What can I do? Please help. I'm on the north east coast of united states
You mentioned you spray pesticide periodically. Does that mean once a week, once a month?
Is hydrogen peroxide good as an anti-mold agent? Also, how cold should the fridge be?
8:09 I would still put a light over them as it helps with avoiding mold. with a smart socket plug u can set it to turn on and of with the sun going up and down

It gets well below -20°c to -40°c in Alberta. So leaving them out side won’t work.

I live in Norway and I don't have moist fagnum moss, I put my trap in a fridge and I haven repotted it and I have not done anything whit the moss cus I don't have in and I haven't put it inn a bag. They are in a small pot and I began dormenting them today cus I just found out about this. The fridge dormancy is also my only option. What to do? I also don't have anny fungicide.
Hello! I bought my venus fly trap in august or September, i left it in the little pot it came in and it actually grew really nicely, but now i noticed its not growing as much as it used to, should i induce dormancy now or can i wait until the end of summer? And when should i re pot it?
I would not try to induce it now. Just repot it and wait for the growing season.

I live in Arizona. The days here are about 60 degrees and nights can be in the high 30s. Will my venus flytrap have a proper dormancy in these conditions or should I pop him in the fridge? His name is herbie and I'm new to this hobby. So any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
The conditions outdoors should be great for dormancy.
Hm nice I live in Europe and it's starting to get cold. I'm planning on leaving them outside for as long as possible but I will probably take them into my fridge very soon lol

SeanPerrin there is a permit needed to ship between countries, and inspections for the mail. It will be easier to buy one from a Canadian grower or carnivorous plant nursery.
i live in a tropical country and ill do this method, is it ok putting my vfts in the refrigerator around september to december then once its january again i can remove it and put it back out? I also have no fungicide, i also cant buy some since my family and i need to save because of the pandemic. what can i do if i have no fungicide?

Yeah, I would aim for 50*F at the hottest, otherwise they will not fully enter dormancy. Have you considered buying some insulation for the shed? That would probably do it and worst case scenario throw in a small plug-in heater. Or yeah, just pop it in the fridge if you have the room.
can we use the bag method if we are using pertile and peat moss as the soil? or does it have to be sphagnum moss
It seems to work much better with just the Sphagnum but the peat and perlite mix is technically possible to be used in the fridge.

You ever get one of those ready to grow flytraps from lowest from bug biting plants?? I'm just want to make an interesting point. The dormant bulbs are stored in the soil and it's completely dry..
Charles Kendall those bulbs don’t last long though, and ultimately that’s not a good route. Of course since they are packed down and not receiving light, or hot weather inside of a store the water transpiration is much lower, so they can putter along and survive, but like I said for healthy plants and successfully dormancy you shouldn’t actively try to store thin completely dry.
@@TheBonsaiJungle yeah I figured that, I just thought it was odd I've never let my flytraps to completely dry out anyway, I leave mine outside till around October before it freezes by then they have lost there summer growth and showing signs of slowing down then I bring them inside till November then I put them in the fridge, of course during this time I'm letting them dry out and there just moist then In the fridge they go..till march.

Yes, for the majority of the time that’s enough for them, but during super cold weeks I would consider a space heater.
I just recently got a venus fly trap as a gift and plan on growing more venus fly traps in the future. Since you and I live in the same geographic area, I definitely appreciate this guide. (saved it to reference in fall). When/what time should we start moving them into the fridge? especially since sometimes the weather gets cold(for dormancy) then warms up again for a few days then gets colder again. Then when should we pull them out? should it be right away or should we gradually introduce it to the warm weather? (temperature shock)

roll zolo I’ve never used neem oil as a fungicide specifically, and not really on my other plants either so I don’t know how safe it is compared to other antifungals.

Unless the plant is sick already, no. Here in Chicago the spring and fall have days with big swings from 65-35 and unless there is a frost I’ve never seen leaf damage. Acclimation is obviously better, and plants that have been outside in the fall will be better prepared than someone taking a flytrap from an indoor set up to a fridge…but like I said, your fridge shouldn’t be cold enough to do any kind of frost damage.
thank you for this guide, i live in an apartment in europe and got a flytrap as a present last week. never had any carnivorous plants before (i'm a cactus guy mainly), but i think mine looks pretty rough. some black traps, many others look kinda weird, like misshapen as well? but there's some small new growth coming in too. i was wondering if it would be safe to do this whole dormancy thing with it, or would it need some special treatment?

I got a question regarding the temperature. I live in South Florida and in December we do get some cold weather that should be ideal for these plants (between 30 and 50 degrees) but it's usually a rather short period (a month at most) then it goes back up to our usual 70 or 80. Even though our hardiness is 10b, is that enough for the plant or should I put her in the fridge?
I remember seeing a number of people who have been growing them outdoors in SFL year round with no issues. I don't keep in touch with them or even remember exactly who it was, but with the combined shorter day length it should be enough for them to go dormant. I haven't been around those collections to know how long they'll be dormant for, but even if it's for a shorter period the increased photosynthesis you get should balance out the health of the plant. Worst case you can always try the fridge dormancy the second year if the plant kept growing the whole time.
I'm living in Europe (Germany) and read quite often that there shouldnt be a problem with temperatures around -6 Celsius (20 Fahrenheit).
I'd rather not put my plants in a fridge.. well its my first winter of my carnivorous plants, so I'm quite insecure.
They should handle (20F) -6c if they are otherwise healthy, but you need to deal with windchill at that point. That's why I started putting mine into the garage, at the bar minimum there should be some kind of box or tarp to protect them from cold winds.

I've bought my venus fly trap in October. It's been growing well and now it's trying to bloom. I live in Wyoming and it's in a window seal. How do I know if it's gone through a fridge dormancy already? Can I make it go dormant now in December?
Whether it’s been put in the fridge before for dormancy or not doesn’t really matter at this point. It’s too late since it’s trying to bloom and attempting to make it dormant while it think it’s spring will likely kill the plant. Just provide as much light as you can (highly recommend getting a Yescom 225 panel) and putting it into dormancy next year.
Love your videos. I live in Detroit..basically same as yourself in Chicago. It's now approaching March and outside temps are increasing...does it make sense/or help for me to take the traps out of the fridge and place outside during the day, then put them in a moderately cool garage during the night? I had an event a month ago where my small fridge malfunctioned and the pots froze solid for about 12 hours.
Moving plants around more than you have to seems to create more stress in them the necessary. I would leave them in the fridge until about April, that’s when I’m likely going to move all mine outside unless I choose to grow them indoors under a Viparspectra 600w for the springtime
So my garage is only warm enough during late fall and early spring, should I start overwintering them in the garage, move them the fridge then back in the garage? Or just keep them in the fridge the entire time?
I would probably let them acclimate to the cold incrementally in the garage until it's too cold and then stick them in the fridge. You can also buy a space heater for the garage to keep it above freezing (You just have to build a small greenhouse-like structure in the garage to trap the heat).
Hi! I’m learning a lot here! I just bought a VFT from Lowe’s (in September)and it was in fairly sad shape.. I put it under grow lights, and I’m noticing a few new shoots coming.. however, I’m in Chicagoland as well, and now I’m wondering if I should pull it from the lights for winter even though I feel like it is emerging from dormancy? also, my traps have no red in them..
Hard to say without seeing a pic (and not an optimal situation overall) but if it’s started pushing new growth it may be best to put it under strong growlights on a short photoperiod indoors all winter. You could also wai about two months and put it in the fridge for late dormancy Jan-mid March. It won’t freeze solid in the fridge so there won’t be any damage unless you water too much or have a mold issue.

So my trap is in one of those glass blown terrariums. It's a little difficult to reach in and get the traps out to put them in the fridge. Can I just put the glass terrarium in the fridge as is for the winter?
You should shatter that terrarium and put it in a regular pot. It will make things way easier and prevent rot. Flytraps + terrariums honestly provide more of a headache than noticeable benefits.

what it is is that when the days get shorter they also get colder so i believe it is a combination of both..i think its both..
It is definitely both, as that’s the natural setting, which is why for years I didn’t agree that a pure photoperiod dormancy would be enough to have healthy flytraps and I proved this to myself over the years with my indoor light set ups. Granted, I didn’t have the Viparspectra and Marshydro that I have now, so maybe I’ll test it on a typical to see short photoperiod is enough.....but all mine are about to go into a new greenhouse next year so honestly I probably won’t fuck around with indoor flytraps again especially since I have other plants and don’t want to spend my entire paycheck on indoor lights trying to reproduce the sun.
I live in Maryland and its my first time putting my flytraps through dormancy I am pretty clueless..Do you recommend the fridge method? I was thinking of leaving them outside for the winter and if it got really cold I would try to insulate them by putting them in an empty fish aquarium and maybe wrap them in something. Any help I appreciate
The fridge would be safe if you don't have a garage to put them in. You could also try placing them by the ground and putting a big layer of mulch around the pot, but without knowing how cold the temp will get for you this winter that's not something I can guarantee working.

So you just have to un-pot them then put them in the fridge? No more pre conditioning needed? Like shorten the photoperiod for a couple of weeks or something like that... because i live in Philippines and i still figuring out how it should be done.. read some grower here in Philippines that they discouraged ref method it because it only make harm than good to the plants plus they say there is this dry dormancy which occurs in summer/dry months and they just stop growing and sleeps like the usual dormancy... I’m also interested in dormancy-because thats the only time the vft will likely to give flower and seeds or will stretches their life more years... thank you...
It is better to shorten the photoperiod if you can. I made this video centered mainly around the way they are grown in the USA. The northern states and southern states will both have good enough reduction in photoperiod to just stick them straight into the fridge with no photoperiod adjustment. Some plants go through dry dormancy, but only ones native to climates where that occurs. Venus flytraps will not go through a dry dormancy very well, and it will more likely just leave them sick or ruin the growth cycle. If you can bring them indoors and grow them under LED growlights for two months, shorten the photoperiod, and then put them into the refrigerator it will be much better than just putting them into it right away. That being said, it shouldn't be a huge deal. Many growers (myself included) have our plants outside where it can be 18 C for a week then drop down to 2 C the next day. They will handle a temperature drop pretty well as long as it doesn't freeze.

I just planted my own Venus flytrap from seeds yesterday (Saturday, 17 October) and I was wondering will the seeds grow? Cause I am not sure if the seeds will germinate or not. Before I started to plant, I didn't have peat moss back then so I kept the seeds by folding it in a tissue and store them in the fridge. (I store it in the fridge for several weeks). But after I got peat moss, I planted them and add some water.

Mohamad Irfan which country/location are you in? cold stratification is somewhat normal and shouldn’t affect them in a negative way. I do choose to plant mine as soon as I get them though, no refrigerator.

You can leave it open, just check the soil moisture once a week to make sure it’s not drying out.

Put it in the fridge when it starts to get below freezing at night, so probably around late november.

any recommendations for a fungicide that is actually sold in new york? apparently new york won't sell Bayer 3in1 for some reason... or maybe a DIY alternative? (that's safe for flytraps)
What about the Daconil? I tend to use that (Or of course the Azoxystrobin/Scotts Disease EX)

I live in Hawaii and we don't typically have a winter period that drops our temp below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Besides the fridge method, do you think there are other methods I may be able to put them in dormancy? We have a freezer, but that's WAY too cold. I was thinking of putting them in a cool room inside a cooler with ice packs that I can change daily, I know it's a lot of work, but I don't think we have enough room in the fridge is all.
Mark Deuz they may be fine outdoors year round in Hawaii. The ice pack method seems to me like it wouldn’t get cold enough for long enough to give them a stable dormancy. There are growers in Hawaii though, so they could give you a better answer than I can being unfamiliar with what’s its like to cultivate in Hawaii. One that comes to mind is AK Carnivores, you could probably contact them through their Facebook page or website about what they do with their VFTs

Repotted mines in sphagnum long fiber moss, but I started to get worried about the dormancy period, since Hawaii is mostly a tropical place. I'll see how it goes in the coming months, hopefully my littles guys continue to grow and thrive ^_^
For the VFTs grown from seeds, what year should you put them in dormancy?

I did the fridge dormancy and it worked out well thru the winter, i put them in on 11/30 and took them out March 1st. it was still cold outside below freezing so i kept them inside with a grow light. but when it was time to put them outside later arund end of april after it got warmer they died.. I had them in full sun made sure spagnum wsa always damp. is it that next time i should take it out the fridge and put it directly outside? i live in northern NJ so sometimes in april it gets below 20 degrees .what am i doing wrong? i had to buy brand new plants in may and they are outside doing well.
maybe too long dormant? led grow light ? they dont produce much heat , add a heat lamp

I have a led lamp but the room is pretty warm in winter and when the light shines in the room it heats it up more. so i dont think its heat. i'm about to put them back into the fridge in november but i got a minifridge with glass door. I'm going put them in my room with the most light and shine the light on them during winter but still in fridge.. i'm hoping that will help. thanks.
You have to acclimate them to sunlight again very slowly, you can't just set them outside.
I've overwintered my flytrap 3 years in a row no problem in the refrigerator but im considering bringing them out on mild days so they get some light instead of none. On a side note i would love a video on your aquatic snails i got some L. stagnalis shortly after you made your video on those and i would like to see what happend since then and what your setup is.
Khayeet I had a Cyanobacteria outbreak which I let go untreated for a long time thinking it was just algae, and had to start over completely in about July.

I live in Barcelona Spain, the winter can be that cold but at noon it gets warm and very sunny ... should I put it into the fridge so that the temp stays cool?

@@TheBonsaiJungle Thank you for your reply!! During those two months and also in Feb, offical answer is at night normally it is about 8-9ºc (48F) and during the day it is usually around 15ºc (59F). However, my opinion is that it is 1-3ºc (33-37F) at nirght and 10ºc (50F) during the day that at least lasts two weeks. Anyway, in the afternoon from 12-17h my belcony has a lot of direct sun, it can reach 50F for an hour or two. In Barcelona we have almost 90% sunny days...
xiaole the colder the better, however even with the warmer temperatures you mentioned that’s still good enough in my opinion since it will be combined with shorter daylight hours.

Yes. They don’t need any light of its going to be 45F and below

Hi from Hawaiʻi! My area gets a daytime high of 70-75, and nighttime low of 50-55. Should I do a refrigerator dormancy?
I personally would still do it, however there are a lot of people saying that since areas like yours have high light the flytraps should be fine outdoors year round. They do great like that in places like south FL.

Brayden Jadulang if your house is air conditioned that is a good start. Short of that you would need to buy a peltier cooler and set up a terrarium. I would not worry about it though. Here in Chicago we go from 60’s to 30’s in the spring and autumn so they can experience quite a drop in temp. They are ok as long as they don’t freeze.

Hello, where I live in the summer it can go up to 112. What's the hottest temperature they should be in? I had some traps and had artificial light on them. This time around I definitely want to put them outside too but I'm afraid they'll get burned.
janel1386 in that temperature they would probably benefit from a share cloth. There is no worries keeping them in full sun even up to 100*F, but warmer than that they may start to burn a little.
@@TheBonsaiJungle Share cloth ? Need to look into that. Should I water them before placing them outside or during the day to to keep them moist. Everything here dries up fast.
janel1386 I would keep them in a water tray in your climate. It’s one of the only times I recommend actually sticking them in 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water since you get a ton of evaporation.
janel1386 whoops also I meant *shade cloth*. I’ve never bought one mused but gardening/greenhouse supply places/websites should have them with varying % of sunlight they let pass through.

Duck Leader oh whoops, I also forgot to mention that because of what I said above I also don’t really see it as a good thing to dump chemicals into the surrounding environment if I don’t really have a good reason for it.
Anyway to absolutely know that they are dorment i have a few that maybe dorment and others that seem they are not
The growth should be short and low to the ground, and eventually you see that no new traps are growing from the center. If they stay outside and it's been dropping into the lower 40's for a while (2-3 weeks) they will be dormant for sure.
@@TheBonsaiJungle some 40s at night 60s during the day have them in very small unheated greenhouse

@@jessj7204 40-60 is still fairly warm, enough for them to not be completely dormant. Should be a couple more weeks until the growth stops completely.

@@TheBonsaiJungle "How to grow a VFT the wrong way" I think the Terrarium, i was shocked to see its already 4 months old. There should be some results by now i guess. I tried azoxystrobin myself after i watched your video and my plants did grow very well but i did not do a "control plant"
Malte Raabe the terrarium vft was dead about 3 weeks after that video.
