I just got a Venus fly traps and 2 pitcher plants. Very cool stuff. Question about sphagnum moss. When you pot them, should I be wrapping the soil or the roots in it? Or topping the soil with the moss? Thank you for your time!
@@sschreck Careful - growing them is addictive. I started out the way you did and now have several thousand Sarracenia and hundred of sundews/dewthreads and hundreds of VFTs. On hot days, I now need 100 - 150 gallons of RO water daily. I grow everything in trays (kiddie wading pools) to conserve water and because I do not have time to top water that many plants. Of course, it has taken me over a decade to grow my collection.
I bought this exact fly trap from Walmart and I was keeping it in the terrarium it came in and following the instructions on the back. I'm so glad I found your video and quickly learned how to properly take care of it. I bought the proper soil, bigger planter, and distilled water for it. The plant is now outside on my balcony and is thriving! Thank you for this informative video! 😊
Gina, that's awesome! I'm glad you found the video too. It would have likely died under the conditions the back recommend. I hope your flytrap continues to take off!!
thank you so much. got one of these as a gift and i knew the directions on the weird plastic container couldn't be right. glad there's people who can actually take care of them lol
Thanks! My dog recently passed and I started taking care of an orchid for my mom and my dad brought home this plant for us but truth be told taking care of these plants have become important to me and your video was really helpful and informative and I would love to help support you! Anyway I would’ve donated the max amount but I have some shopping to do for my new plant :)
Aww.Siera, I'm so sorry to hear about your dogs passing. We lost a Bernese Mountaig dog a couple years ago and that was really hard 😞. I'm glad that the video helped you, venus flytraps can be tricky! Thank you sooooo much for the Super Thanks, you are incredible! This comment seriously made my day. You watching and commenting is huge in supporting my channel, I appreciate it so much. Please reach out if you have any questions and Good Luck!!!
Just got a venus fly trap for my birthday! I'm very happy that lots of experienced carnivorous plant owners are sharing their care method online. Thank you for the plastic pot tip, etc. I hope I will be able to keep little Vinnie alive for a long time.
We have had ours for a week now. Got it for my daughter she has been wanting one for nearly a year and I think she is ready to take care of one now that she is 4. Thank you for this informative video we appreciate you taking your time
Awww, that is so awesome that she is interested at such a young age. I really hope the plant does well so she can enjoy it! If for some reason, it doesn't, I strongly recommend getting one from flytrapstore.com for your daughter. They will be a bit more expensive, but the odds of them surviving are increased by a lot since they are raised really healthy. If you have any questions or need any help, hit me up. I really want this plant to grow big and strong for her. I do warn you however, these plants are a bit addictive! Lol. Good luck to you and your daughter!!
This video was incredibly wholesome. I'm going to Walmart tomorrow to get myself one along with some perlite, peat moss, and distilled water! Just a few questions: 1. I've heard that they catch bugs themselves when outside but also that they are only to be fed once a week, so would I have to worry about them "overfeeding" themselves? 2. How often should I water it? I've always thought that you can just put them in a tray of water and just refill it when low. Great video super informative and straight to the point.
I have also heard about overfeeding, however, I have a venus flytrap sitting outside right now that almost always has a fly or insect in every trap and it's thriving. If you put the flytrap outside, you won't ever have to feed it, most likely. They don't actually need the bugs to live. They survive off the sun the insects are more like fertilizer. The only time you really need to feed them is if you keep them indoors and they rarely catch any insects on their own. They are surprisingly efficient at catching bugs all on their own! I wouldn't worry about them overfeeding themselves outside. As for watering, I think my favorite method is to tray water but... I have had flytraps die with tray watering, so you need to be careful. Don't leave a flytrap sitting in a tray of water for more than 2 days. If it doesn't soak it up, it means the plant has all the water it needs. Remove from the tray and allow it to dry out a bit before putting it back in. Top water them once or twice a month, this will flush any nutrients or minerals that have built up in the substrate. The only exception to the water tray staying full is in extreme heat. If you are at 95 F or above, it's okay to leave water in the tray more often. Since the plant will be burning through the water much quicker. Just make sure when the temps go down that you be very careful not to leave it sitting in a tray of water for more than a couple days. They can succumb to crown rot when sitting in stagnant water for too long. Especially in colder weather. Hope this helps Michelle, thank you for your kind words and good luck with your plants!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I’m in Nevada where it’s been regularly over 100 every day and I was so curious about how to handle the plant’s water needs. Thank you so much!
@@ahmedshallo1587 Usually the plants are in poor condition and they water with high tds tap water, so unless u want to change the soil and all of its conditions to help revitalize it, then dont get it. also it can still die anyways if it’s too late. Usually the variation/cultivar is inferior too. Just buy online or at a nursery where you can pick the cultivars and get them in healthy conditions. Also it’s better to support smaller businesses sometimes.
Thank you Coley! You kind of have to unlearn what you know to take care of them. Once you have it down though, they really aren't that bad. Just go against what we think we know about growing almost every other plant! Lol.
@@AllThingsColey Also next time you shouldn’t buy from Lowe’s or other big box stores. They usually leave the plants in terrible condition, so you will get a sick plant that can die, and usually the cultivars are crap. By buying them, you are only encouraging them to stock more on shelves. It’s better to buy from carnivorous plant stores/nurseries or buy them online from nurseries/individuals who can have some really cool varieties and maintain the genetics with tissue cultures. Also you are helping smaller businesses.
Why don't you start selling the supplies needed for this lifestyle and use your video to promote them. Why buy it from someone else, when we can get it through you. Been growing cp for 20 years and you're giving sound advise in a smooth calming voice. Although old weathered terracotta pots are fine. All the minerals are washed away. Also have you tried using pure quarts sand for any of your American carnivores? Been growing a Leah Wilkerson and lavithan in pure sand outdoors all year here in Bavaria for 3 years now. They grow incredibly! Another reason I switched to sand is birds were stealing the moss and peat from pots and stole all my vft and sundews coming out of dormancy. Tip to those growing cp in long winter areas. Throw them in a tub together and stuff it with hay. They'll live
Thank you for the compliment, it means a lot! I have not tried pure quarts sand before. But I also don't have issues with birds stealing peat or moss. Do you also grow your VFT's in pure quarts sand? Next winter, I'm doing exactly that. Overwintering with a tub. From what I can see, winter was harder on my VFT's than I expected. I'm not used to winters this cold. I will have to try something different next year for sure. In a tub with hay for overwintering sounds about right.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub not yet. Lost all my vft last spring to birds and been too annoyed to try again, but got plans for a bog garden in my front yard this year so will see what happens. Have you tried Aldrovanda yet? Amazing plant when given the right conditions.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub they really are hands down the easiest/fastest cp to grow under the right water conditions. Grew them under a pine tree that constantly dropped everything into the huge container. In one year I went from 4 turions to 20 lbs of them. Look up Lubomír Adamec if you want the nitty gritty on aquatic cp growth and care. He's heavily involved in the reintroduction of native aldrovanda to the point I couldn't buy any Swiss/German aldros. Northern italy is doing a reintroduction program so I'm on a waiting list for the same. Another person I'd say you sold get to know on FB (starting a fb will help you grow) is Ryan from native exotics in upstate NY. Great guy, great company dedicated to native preservation threw tissue culture propagation. Amazing grower and all around chill dude.
I to am weak when I see carnivores anywhere. Thankfully I work in the industry so I can get fly traps for dirt cheap. My focus is sarracenia. I grow them outdoors here in Canada all year around. Nothing like seeing a bog garden full of sarracenia.
what kind of discounts or prices do you get your plants for? I worked for a nursery before and we could get 30% off as an employee discount, as well as stack on a 30% during some sales or promotion periods. (Not 60% additive but 30% and then 30% again). So that was a nice time to buy, assuming there were some decent-looking CP plants available at the time of double-stacking like that.
@@mikej70 Fly traps are not easier or hardier than Sarracenia. Once Sarracenia are established they pretty much take care of themselves if you live in proper climate zones. Fly traps to be grown successfully need a lot of preparation.
I just rescued my first Venus fly trap! Your videos have been so helpful, thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’ve never really been a plant person, but I’m really committed to caring for this lil buddy. I named her Miss Ives. 😊
Let's go Miss Ives! I'm rooting for you. I'm confident you will be able to care for your new flytrap. Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate it!
I got 2 Venus fly traps from California carnivores a month ago. I repotted them last week. I separated the Venus fly traps by the white parts. For example 3 Venus fly traps were combined to act as one. Now after reporting some of them are doing better but most are staying the same and dying. I’m wondering if I repotted them wrong. I did 60% peat moss and 40% perlite. I rinsed the soil too.
YES you are correct plastic with drainage...... You can keep an all year round plant this way. I Am growing mine that way and the bigger the pot the more the water, the more the flies. I skipped from a tiny 1 inch nursery pot to 6 inch in which they will stay till next year depending how big they are.
The roots also like to stretch out. The bigger pots are definitely a little better. Too big can be a pain to keep watered though. It's about finding that sweet spot!
Just bought 2 today from Walmart! Thank goodness for videos like this one. They are almost entirely rotten. They each had one small mouth on the and some babies starting to sprout. I’ve planted them in 1 part peat moss (couldn’t obtain sphagnum moss today) 1 part perlite Using some distilled water and I’ve got them under a grow light. Right now they are both in a 4 in. Plastic pot. Absolutely anxious, absolutely hoping for their full recovery! These are my first carnivores plants! Other than years ago before I ever had any plants I got one and well it died. Now I have a better understanding, so here’s to plant rescue! 🤙🏼
Just make sure it's a strong enough grow light. They would probably do better outside in full sun. Assuming that's something you can do. If not, just make sure the grow lights put out enough light. I know the Yescom 225's Blue, Red, White are a great option for around $20. I really hope your flytrap snaps out of it and begins to grow! Sometimes these rescues can be tricky. If for some reason it doesn't make it, you should consider buying your next from a reputable grower, like Matt over at flytrapstore.com. It will be a bit pricier but starting off with a healthy plant makes the process a lot more fun! Good luck my friend and here's to your plant coming out healthy and growing big and strong!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I possibly can, it’s not the best ever condition for plants outdoors at the moment! Due to smoke from fires all around us. Maybe it wouldn’t harm them too much but for now, I have a pretty fabulous grow light! May still get me some of those yescoms (always looking for other lights to out around the house) So far after about 24 hours they are still looking good, which to me is a good start! I may also go about getting a plant from there as well, I would definitely love a healthy one. I guess I’ve only ever purchased “rescues” the carnivorous plant world is definitely something I want to add to my collection. Thank you so much!
On water treatment Iron (II) Sulphate (Sulphate of Iron) can be used to remove lime from water. It is less dangerous form of sulphuric acid, calcium sulphate is insoluble. Aim for milli-molar which should give a pH of about 3. Let the treated water stand, the Iron-oxide and precipitated minerals will settle at the bottom, decant the water off.
HI, I had bought a pot with Venus Flytrap off Amazon. Once I got it, it was dead within a week. I decided to get rid of the pot but, I reloaded in a better dirt and within two weeks I got some to grow. I use a spray a few times a day and they love it, I only use distilled water. I do keep water in another pot and put the other one in the jar and it seems to enjoy. This is my first time with Venus Fly Traps. I started with all types of plants and it's a blast in my time, I only use inside near window and good led light that helps. My temp during the night is abought 65 deg and daytime around 75 deg. I do buy cool plants and I love Catus. I made a fish tank and I use charcoal and light gravel and dirt on top. Everything so far seems to be doing okay together plants. I put food on once a week, and they love it so far. Sory for bugging you! BTW, I hope it works well and have a good business. Thanks! P/S I had a stroke, so my reading is slow but, it gives me something I am enjoying.
Very helpful video! I'm new to planting, but have always had an interest in venus fly traps. I just got my first ones a few days ago, this video helped a lot in understanding these fascinating plants, thank you so much!!
I'm so glad you found my channel! I'll be releasing more helpful venus flytrap videos! Thank you for your support and I'm so happy that the video helped you understand these wonderful plants a little more. Continue to learn and your venus flytrap will thrive!!
Aww, that's awesome! Do keep in mind though that Venus Flytraps are tricky and take a little practice. It's not uncommon at all for beginner growers to lose 1 or 2 before they get the hang of it, I know I sure did! So don't be too hard on yourself if for some reason they don't make it. I strongly recommend trying again, once you get the hang of it, you can propagate them and they will duplicate like crazy. More than making up for the couple you lost when learning!
This was fantastic! Thank you! i acquired venus fly traps from walmart, myself this week - definitely not a fresh batch, unfortunately. i got them intending to use them for pest control purposes indoors. (i recently found myself in charge of a small warehouse with a very hungry and annoying swarm of flies) after watching this video, i think i may have over purchased (i grabbed the 6 healthiest-looking pkgs - which isn't saying much) now i'm planning to bring some home to add to my own outdoor container garden - assuming i can save them *nervous sweating* the info you've shared has been wonderful, and i'm absolutely going to trawl the rest of this channel for tips! again, thanks so much!! *fingers crossed*
Me accidentally buying a really good pot for my Venus fly trap because I saw a cheap plastic pot at the dollar store that had a water area 😮 it’s also decently tall (and it gives the terracotta look)
Hi, I’m from the UK. Just bought my first Flytrap from my local DIY store. I’m going to re pot it, but my question is can I put it straight out in the sun. I watched another UA-cam grower that said as the small plant has been in a store for an unknown amount of time I should slowly introduce it to the outside sun, is this correct or can I put it straight out. Thanks you
It really is best to acclimate it. However, this can also depend on the strength of the sun. I would not take a store bought VFT and put it in 90 plus degrees F as it will burn and maybe kill the plant. I'd start with 4 hours a day for the first week. Jump to 5 the next and just keep going up from there until it's in full sun. But yes, acclimating it is usually the best way.
I have a King Henry and B52 in a pot, and 2 commons in another pot. I saved a walmart plant a few days ago that was rough, but alive and I could tell it was two rhizome plant. Im repotting everything today (7 total into a big “bog”). Im about 4 years into growing VFT’s with my kids, and your video covers all the right things to do perfectly and easily. If I have any friends wanting to grow some traps Ill send em to this vid. Nice job dude.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words. If they need a condensed version, I have a 10 minute care video here. Check it out!! ua-cam.com/video/bTfbMPkRtUA/v-deo.html
I got a package of the bug biting plants fly traps from Lowe's and it was just the fly traps and not the pitcher plants added into it and they died within a week of having them. That was probably my fault but lesson learned. I also got the set together from Lowe's and they've been doing pretty good for a year but the pitcher plants have taken over the whole thing almost
The pitcher plants are really fun! Are they Nepenthes pitcher plants or Sarracenia pitcher plants? I love my nepenthes because I get to enjoy them year round, no dormancy! Mine are growing like weeds right now, they are really enjoying summer!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I really am not even sure. Hmm.. I'm gonna check the other package I haven't planted yet. I do know that when I got the next set that I did, they never had bulbs in there so when I reached out to what I thought was the company about it, they said that it wasn't even their product and the ones that come from lowe's, the company stole the name. Not Lowe's but the company that took the name bug biting plans from the real people. Thank God those let me exchange and get a different one cuz I was so mad. Okay so it does say Sarrasenia.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub and crazily enough, these guys staying alive all winter in the same exact spot that they were in, even though they probably had drafts. Then once it got warmer they started growing like crazy and pretty much took over the whole pot so I'm just got a couple Venus fly traps and more pitcher plants
It is hard to resist, they are incredible plants. Good luck, hope the video helped. Don't be discouraged if this one doesn't make it. I had to try like 5 times before I finally started to figure it out. Once you get a good grip on it, you can grow your collection!
I just got a wal mart special trap. I live in the north and it can get well into the negatives. I understand these can handle some cold temps, but is that too cold? Should I store them in a cool place inside instead?
This does get tricky, I'm in the north too so I completely understand your dilemma. The below freezing temperatures will kill them if exposed to them for too long. It's important, if possible, to bring them inside a garage or colder room of the house. Ideally it's around 40 degrees and they can still get some light. If it's colder than that then the light isn't as necessary because they go into full dormancy where they aren't growing anymore at all and light isn't really important. Try to keep the rhizomes protected with bark, pine needles or some kind of frost prevention fabric. You can also put them in a cold frame outside. If the temperatures get below 10 degrees that's when I like to put a light source inside of the cold frame or close to the plants. You can put them in a barrel or something you can cover them in and place a light bulb in with them. This isn't for the light but for the little bit of heat the light puts off. It can raise temperatures just enough to keep your plants from being exposed to under 10 degrees. Too many of days with temps that low will almost certainly kill most carnivorous plants, even the very cold hardy ones. I hope that helps! Probably a little overkill for a comment response. Lol! Good Luck!
I got my Venus from Walmart on clearance. Wasn't sure about it but you have made them interesting. I will read more to see how big it will get if I can make it happy. Thank you
Definitely! They need as much sun as you can possibly get them. When winter comes, you may want to stash them in an unheated garage. If that's not possible, you can overwinter them so they don't get too cold.
Herbert (my VFT) was about dead and on sale when I took him home. He’s now got 4 leaves and little buds but still in the same pot. Thank you for this information!!
I am so happy Herbert is coming through! I really appreciate your support, it really does mean so much to me. I hope Herbert gets big and strong, divides and lives to be 25!!
It’s true that the Venus Flytrap is not a tropical plant. Its home habitat, in the Carolinas, is in USDA Zone 7 or 8. Even with tropical plants (and animals), though, we must remember that “tropical” does not necessarily mean “hot” There are a variety of climates in the tropics, where temperatures are influenced by factors like elevation, distance from coasts, rainfall, cloud cover, and winds. In some tropical areas, there are also large seasonal changes in these conditions, and therefore temperatures. The exact habitat matters, too. For example, a tropical plant that grows in full sun can generally tolerate heat better than one that grows in shade.
Nope! Their primary need for food is sun. If you put then out in sun they will inevitably catch flies and other bugs. The best way it's been explained to me is... They need sun and water to live, bugs are basically fertilizer. They arent necessary but catching bugs will help give the plant the nutrients it needs to grow bigger and stronger. Also, have fun with it! There is no reason why you cant throw a bug your plants way occasionally .
Have a couple of the WalMart offering from Altman Plants. I'm 77 and grew some back in my mid teens, so it's been a while. I contacted Altman on 2 points and was thrilled that Hollee at Altman gave me some help. I asked her if immediate transplanting was necessary. She advised not to re-pot the FTs until after going through it's first dormancy period. The second question was where I would keep the plants for dormancy. I live in central Minnesota so you already know that, yes WE DO HAVE COLD WINTERS. Her advice was to place them in a frig that stayed above freezing, most do at about 41F. Put the plant and pot into a plastic bag and not to wet and give it a long winter's nap. From your experience would both of these pieced of advice be worth observing? Oh yea, middle of August and it looks as if the older plants still for sale at Wally are not in very good condition.
The advice was solid. Although, I don't recommend the fridge unless it's last resort. Usually, the best option is an unheated garage or room in the home. But, you do want to keep them around 40 degrees if possible. If you are unable to do this then the fridge might be a good recommendation. They are prone to rot in the fridge, so less water is correct. You might also need an anti fungal spray, just to help with potential mold and mildew.
Never knew these plants were such a pain in the ass, I just got one an i have watered it 4 times with tap water so I'm guessing I've probably killed it...
Haha. They are a pain, but mostly because they defy conventional plant wisdom. Once you know how to care for them, they aren't so bad. It's not likely you killed your plant, it kind of depends how many dissolved solids you have in your tap water. I've seen tap water be okay for Venus Flytrap and I've seen it be REALLY bad for them, it depends on your location. However, I would get some distilled water and I would flush the plant really well. Make sure it has good drainage and that it's in a peat and perlite mix. Then flush the plant with distilled water 5-10 times, this should help rinse out any nutrients or minerals from the tap water. I wish you luck my friend. They can be kind of a pain, but they really are worth it!
They are actually pretty easy to grow! Plant them in a normal pot with drainage holes. Use sphagnum moss for the “soil.” Definitely not regular potting soil mixes. Set the pot in a water tray or bowl in full sun with distilled water or rainwater no higher that halfway up the pot. That’s it! Keep the water tray from drying out, and you’re good to go.
That's a bit tricky. I know a lot of people grow in Florida. Some people use a fridge or some kind of cooler to keep them stored in during winter time. It might be worth finding someone who grows local there and ask what they do for dormancy!
@@brianacosta9685 Honestly they should be fine outside during the dormancy phase here in florida. Here is a forum discussing it. www.flytrapcare.com/phpBB3/dormancy-in-florida-t20598.html
I just got my first Venus fly trap from a local greenhouse. It’s a baby🤗baby traps are very adorable 🥰. The north winters will be a challenge . I have never winterized a plant and hope I’ll be able to bring them in without hurting them.
I want one of these for my office but i don't have a window by my cubical. What's the best kind of desk light to use? Or is there even a good one to use?
Hey Mary! Honestly, the lights needed are probably a little too bright for a desk. It may be possible to use a light that you keep on overnight. I use a Sansi 36W bulb. But it's bright and would be a distraction if it were on my desk. It also produces quite a bit of heat, another thing to consider. They like a lot of sun so need a pretty strong light to be grown indoors.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ok I just got mine yesterday from Lowe’s and it was a kit where you plant them and wait for them to grow because I couldent find the other live ones but in that kit it said find the root and plant it but I couldent find the root or anything just dirt and moss 😒
They dont take much care at the nursery. Or garden centres. I got a pitcher plant (bloody mary) and it was damaged and not well cared for so like you I'm here trying to learn how to get her back to health
What would you advise for growing flytraps in places that get really hot, like around 100+ Fahrenheit? The heat makes it hard for most plants to survive outside and I do have a grow light
Around 100 should be fine, these grow naturally in North Carolina where it gets pretty hot. Make sure to acclimate them if you get them from big box store. But, around 100 should be fine if you keep the tray with water.
I’m glad I watched your channel first! I successfully grew one a couple years ago but I have more confidence (and experience 😎) this time around. Like you I wasn’t going to buy any from Walmart but now I’m the proud owner of two pretty decent flytraps!
Very informative thank you so much. My daughter want one so I got it for her and had know idea what to do with it. Now I know a lot about them before I watched this I knew nothing... So thank you again.
Hello. New sub from Arkansas. Great content. Thx. I'm glad you mentioned rainwater from the roof! I was wondering about that. I'll stop that immediately.😳
Marilyn, welcome and thank you so much for the sun, it means a lot! Dont assume rainwater from your roof wont work. Grab a TDS meter for like $10-15 and measure it. There is a great chance the water comes in under 50 ppm. If so, use away!!
I ordered a pitcher plant not long ago online and it came bwo USPS and was stamped on the box do not leave inside the mailbox. Of course he paid no attention to that and left it in the mailbox. Needless to say my plant was dead. However I had bought special soil for it, so I will have it here whenever I attempt to get another carnivorous plant.
Oh no! I'm so sorry Anette, how frustrating. Try to find a local nursery, if none are available find someone who ships quickly. I'm sorry that happened 😢

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub They are really small.I trimmed the dead ones off .cut the plastic container around about the height of the pot to allow direct sunlight,I plan on transplanting them in a week or two .
Make sure to rinse off the roots with distilled water before you repot it in the peat moss & perlite mix. As long as it wasn't in the potting soil for too long, it should be okay!
That's really my goal eventually, I just want to share my plants with the world! I'm going to start with substrate/soil and eventually work up to plants!
You really know flytraps well! There are many myths and bad advices around the internet, confusing. Glad you give correct tips. I bought a Venus flytrap few years ago and I put it on the windowsill. Surprisingly, it was doing well. Then we moved and I took the flytrap with me. I tried so many places indoors but nothing worked and my plant was dying slowly. It was getting smaller and smaller, it stopped growing traps, there was some mold.. One day I finally found out these flytraps should be kept outside. I bought a new flytrap in a death cube, I repoted it into much bigger pot and I also put there the mini dying flytrap. I put it outside for the first time in their life. Sun burned it a little, but the leaves are still okay and it's growing new big healthy traps! It's color changed too. While being in the death cube, the green color was darker and looked more like plastic than actual plant. Now the green is lighter, brighter, fresh. The mini flytrap is recovering too. It started growing traps and it also caught some small flies. I have a question. Is it going to grow back into normal size or is it mini permanently?
It should get back to full size. Traps get smaller when a plant is not getting the best care. The more sun and consistent water they get, the bigger the plant and traps will grow. I have full confidence that the plant will get back to full size and maybe even bigger than before!! You see the same thing when flower stalks are left to grow. The traps get smaller as the flowers pull from the rest of the plant.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thanks! I can't wait to see the plant fully grown. It went into bad condition due to my wrong care. I learned from my mistake. Now it's going to be better.
If you can't get distilled water try rain water. We'll water or if chlorinated tap water use treatment or leave a few days to clear out chlorine should work
Another great video!! Thank you for making this. It is extremely helpful for me and my new hobby. At what point should I remove traps that are black. Typically the trap itself turns black and then the stem dies over time. Should I clip the entire stem when the trap turns black? I have plenty of other stems.
They had a bunch of these babies at Walmart on clearance with a lot of them already dead, I salvaged a few that had more live ones but they looked so sad. Thank you for this video! Omw to get some perlite, I really want these to grow!
those are the biggest and best looking VFT's ive ever seen from any walmart!! ive been growing these since i was a child and it usually takes a lot of care to get one to look like that.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I've got a bunch of them from various places, the one I saved from Lowes is now going on 6 years old, I've got a lot of plants from that one and now have seeds from those plants growing. I've always brought them in when the temps go below freezing but put them right back outside as soon as it's above freezing. I'm in central Georgia US so they do pretty well here on their own.
My kids got one from Home Depot. We were leaving it outdoors in full sun and i noticed it was limp. So i brought it indoors on my sink window ledge where it gets partial sun and its now thriving. If it gets too much sun itll start to wilt.
They have to be acclimated to full sun. It's likely not thriving, but recovering from being shocked in the sun. Over time, it will slowly die from not enough sun or light. Unless you supplement with a grow light. It's extremely rare for them to last long term in a window sill, just not enough sun. They need to be put out for a couple hours at a time, then ramp up as it seems to be handling it okay. Probably over a span of 2-4 weeks for it to acclimate to full sun.
Excellent videos Sir. Your knowledge of these underated beauties is phenomenal. I'm spreading the word of your channel in my plant enthusiast community. Thanks
I just got to repot mine from work Home Depot. I got it in December. I noticed when watering the moss it just runs through. So I put it in the tray then I'm going to add more in a few minutes. Hopefully now that it's outside it will improve.
Ya, definitely tray water for best results. Just don't let it sit in tray water for more than 3 or 4 days. The cooler the weather, the less water you need. The hotter, the more often you can fill up that tray!
Good call! I have heard that really old Terracotta are okay as they have leeched everything out. But if it's a newer pot, you will probably want to switch it over.
Simple solution to setting off traps during repotting: Feed your plant. I've put a fly in every trap before putting my plant in new pot, they closed and I handled it without much stress. My Sarracenia though... that one is tricky.
I just rescued a fly trap and a violet from walmart i grabbed the ones that looked as if they needed my care the most! the girl contracted to water them didnt even know what succulents or aloe vera was im like no wonded walmart planta arent taken care of in store! Wish i could of took the whole dang lot of plants and save them all. looks like i got my hands full with this fly trap thankfully for videos like yours its gonna help so much thanks for the tips and guidance! 😁👊
Yes! Flytraps are a little different than other plants. I'm glad you did some research! I haven't met anyone at a Walmart garden center that knew anything about flytraps before. The knowledge is definitely not common and goes against most common growing wisdom. A person who has spent their entire life gardening will likely kill a venus flytrap if they don't do a little research first!
My fly traps are flowering. They’re working on its 3rd stalk. The traps are green and no longer have the red color. It sits in a windowsill that gets full sun. It also sits in tray water because if it’s not it dries out in 2 days and gets droopy.
The hotter it is the longer you can keep them in a tray, once the temps cool down, Id recommend monitoring the water a bit. The lack of red is due to less light, window sills rarely provide enough light for a venus flytrap, so I'm really happy that yours is working out! If you want more red, you would need more sun or light. I do have a video about whether or not to cut the flower stalk too, in case you were interested. Might be able to propagate! ua-cam.com/video/VzFezjtKOac/v-deo.html
Just picked up my first Venus Fly trap from Walmart. I am not really one who buys much from there since every time we have bought a fish from there it dies within a week. The one I bought was way smaller than these and I am hoping that in Illinois I can get them to grow. I plan on keeping them inside but maybe building a shelf outside my south window to put them on for sun.
Putting them outside will be much better for them. I live in North Idaho and can grow them with success. It does help to have some grow lights to extend the growing season beyond the measly 3 month summer we get. But, they will do better outside than inside, most of the time, they die inside. They are not a great houseplant, unless you are using lights.
Just picked up my first Venus fly trap ever from Walmart was walking thru with my wife and seen them and just couldn't help my self always wanted one...your video was definitely very informative glad I checked it out thank you 💪
Hey! Next time you repot consider just taking all the dirt from your original pot with the plant, that way the plant doesn’t need to spend energy re-anchoring itself to the new soil. (Unless you did it for a reason??)
Definitely! When I have big box venus flytraps, I just don't trust the substrate they came in. There could be mold, mildew, critters and dissolved solids. I like to be rid of all of it for a fresh start. If I know it's still good substrate (doesn't stink) I'll keep a little attached.
Just subbed, i hope your dream comes true!! I recently fell in love with Venus fly traps, especially because they’re native to my home state. Such a unique and special plant
Idk if you’ll see this or not but it’s worth a shot- i got a Venus fly trap from Walmart recently and it seems to be dying. Most of the traps are turning black and some have white mold on them. Should i cut the ones that have mold off, even if they’re still green? Do you think my Venus fly trap is salvageable??
The traps turning black and white mold seems to be an indicator of maybe too much water? Let it dry out just a bit, not completely but more than it has been. Don't leave it in a tray of water, allow the water tray to dry up for a day or two before putting more water in. Try to wipe off the mold with a tissue and cut off all the dead black traps. The dead traps will just continue to create mold and isn't great for the plant. Try to make sure it's getting at least 12 hours of direct sun (not from a window sill) or a strong grow light. The Sansi 36W bulb is a great but affordable one you can get on Amazon. If you can, try to pick a place that might have some better air flow. The mold is usually an indicator that its sitting stagnant. I've dealt with mold a lot, it can be frustrating but is something you can fend off. I think there is a good chance you beat this! Don't cut off the green traps, just try wiping the mold off those.
That's awesome, welcome! So happy to have you as a sub! I just answered your question. If for some reason this venus flytrap doesn't pan out, I recommend getting a really healthy one from flytrapstore.com instead of big box stores. You will have a much better start and likely a much more pleasant experience. I've bought so many plants from Matt at flytrap store. They are super high quality people and sell a really high quality plant. Sometimes the best way as a starter is to make sure you get a really healthy plant!
It's really hit and miss. It depends on the batch, but even more it depends on when you found them off the truck. If it was right off the truck, they are usually in pretty good shape.
I bought one of these Venus flytraps from lowes but I live in Arizona and it gets pretty hot so I have a few questions. Will it survive 100+ degrees or do I have to put it inside? We don’t really get much of a winter so do I have to do the fridge dormancy and if so does it need food, sunlight, and water if it’s in dormancy? Do I use the tray method for longer if it’s gonna be outside in a lot of heat? I’ve never taken care of a Venus flytrap and I need some tips for what to do when it gets really hot.
They can survive in 100 plus but you have to be very diligent with water. I would also slowly acclimate it to that heat. Start with 4 hours a day for the first week, then move to 5 hours and go up from there. It might also be a good idea to put it in a place where it will collect a lot of morning sun, then maybe be under a shade cloth for the afternoon/evening to avoid the extreme heat of the day.
Thank you! I brought home two from the grocery store today, and yeh, no idea what I’m doing…. So this is perfect. I grow african Violets (lots of them) And I use Wicks and capillary mats. I’m just wondering how/if that would work for VFTs. But since it’s Late October, I need to prepare first for a dormant period, after I repot them. So wish me luck!
I dont see any reason why you couldn't use a capillary mat. I never have personally but it should be fine. Just make sure to rinse out with distilled water first. Good luck with dormancy!!
Got mine from Lowes. Hoping to save them, they have a couple black sprouts that died. Should I clip them off? And if so down the the dirt or just the "flower" part? Thank u SO much. This was super helpful
I bought one that had little tiny worms in the soil. Thank you for your videos, I should have watched them first. I’ve learned a lot from you. I also got meal worms and feed them as many that would eat. Now I think they are in a-coma. I want to replant the poor little thing’s. Can you do that with them eating?
You can repot them anytime. Actually, it's a good idea to feed them while they are eating so you don't trigger traps. However, the best time to repot is at the end of dormancy. A month or so before the weather gets better and they start the growing season!

Just a few questions:
Hope this helps Michelle, thank you for your kind words and good luck with your plants!
dont buy from walmart
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I’m in Nevada where it’s been regularly over 100 every day and I was so curious about how to handle the plant’s water needs. Thank you so much!
@@ahmedshallo1587 Usually the plants are in poor condition and they water with high tds tap water, so unless u want to change the soil and all of its conditions to help revitalize it, then dont get it. also it can still die anyways if it’s too late. Usually the variation/cultivar is inferior too. Just buy online or at a nursery where you can pick the cultivars and get them in healthy conditions. Also it’s better to support smaller businesses sometimes.
im gonna see my plant catchin enough bugs even inside, im on my pc gaming a lot and flies or mosquitos just seem to appear whenever they want

They don’t require much care if u leave them outside to do their thing
@@Tatusiek_1 That’s true, it’s been outside since I got it and doing pretty good 😊
@@AllThingsColey Also next time you shouldn’t buy from Lowe’s or other big box stores.
I havent grown those yet. Just looked them up. They look fascinating!
I have a question for you. Is it possible to grow a darlingtonia in sunny Florida? I know they like their roots cool.
I to am weak when I see carnivores anywhere. Thankfully I work in the industry so I can get fly traps for dirt cheap. My focus is sarracenia. I grow them outdoors here in Canada all year around. Nothing like seeing a bog garden full of sarracenia.
A bog garden with Sarracenia is definitely on my to do list this year!
what kind of discounts or prices do you get your plants for?
I worked for a nursery before and we could get 30% off as an employee discount, as well as stack on a 30% during some sales or promotion periods. (Not 60% additive but 30% and then 30% again). So that was a nice time to buy, assuming there were some decent-looking CP plants available at the time of double-stacking like that.
Easier and hardier in the north pitcher plant. Starting some from seed will be interesting some crazy looking crosses
@@pershop4950 I get them for wholesale costs. Usually $2 to $3 per plant.

I rescued two myself, now one has 22 traps and the other has 14. Dug up some sundews and put in the pot with them and they look amazing
Rescued from what? Walmart?
I got 2 Venus fly traps from California carnivores a month ago. I repotted them last week. I separated the Venus fly traps by the white parts. For example 3 Venus fly traps were combined to act as one. Now after reporting some of them are doing better but most are staying the same and dying. I’m wondering if I repotted them wrong. I did 60% peat moss and 40% perlite. I rinsed the soil too.
Quality content. The algorithm will do great things for you soon!
I hope so! Thank you for your kind words!
Great information
Thank you mike!!

I got ⏃ Venus flytrap from Walmart it came with no traps so I’m just waiting for them to grow
BELUGA
Just bought 2 today from Walmart! Thank goodness for videos like this one.
They are almost entirely rotten. They each had one small mouth on the and some babies starting to sprout.
I’ve planted them in 1 part peat moss (couldn’t obtain sphagnum moss today) 1 part perlite
Using some distilled water and I’ve got them under a grow light.
May still get me some of those yescoms (always looking for other lights to out around the house)
So far after about 24 hours they are still looking good, which to me is a good start!
I may also go about getting a plant from there as well, I would definitely love a healthy one.
I guess I’ve only ever purchased “rescues” the carnivorous plant world is definitely something I want to add to my collection. Thank you so much!
Thank you! I did just what you said. I got one (from Walmart) and realized I didn’t really know what to do! This has been so helpful! Repotting now!
Good luck MacKensey!
This is one of the only good channel I could find that’s actually helpful!
Awww thank you Sadie! That comment means a lot to me. Really appreciate it!

I got both of mine at Lowes in early May and they're still kicking!
Right on!
Thank you my grandma just got me these for my 16th birthday and I would've been really sad if it died so glad I found this
Aww, that's awesome!
Good luck Shanna! I hope your flytraps grow big healthy and strong! Lots of tips on the channel, let me know if you have any questions!
@shanna- How did your plant-based fly defense work out?
Me accidentally buying a really good pot for my Venus fly trap because I saw a cheap plastic pot at the dollar store that had a water area 😮 it’s also decently tall (and it gives the terracotta look)
Ha, win! Usually it goes the opposite way, great job!
Thanks, i couldn't resist buying my 1st Venus Fly Trap and i i hope i can make it thrive after watching your video. thank you
It is hard to resist, they are incredible plants.
Thank you
Right on Brenda, that's why I make these videos! I hope you get one and love it!
Thank for this video I live in Northern Virginia Is it still recommend to grow them outside.
Definitely! They need as much sun as you can possibly get them. When winter comes, you may want to stash them in an unheated garage. If that's not possible, you can overwinter them so they don't get too cold.
I have bought some of those venus Flytraps from Walmart. I am glad I found your video. Very helpful.
Glad I could help, good luck!!
Underrated channel. Keep up the work! Hope ur dream comes true man!!
Thank you so much Khoantin, that comment means more than you know. I truly appreciate you and the comment!
I just bought a really full Venus fly trap from WinCo. I'll soon be repotting it. Thank you for this video. 🙂
Right on! I've never seen one at winco before! I'll keep my eyes open.
Is it necessary to proactively feed them bugs, and if so how often? Or can we let them fend for themselves?
Not that they are a pain but that you didn't know about their care.
So now that you know, just give them the care that you can do for them.
That’s it! Keep the water tray from drying out, and you’re good to go.
you seem to have such a wealth of knowledge with these lil guys, thank you!
Of course! I spend wayyyyy too much time with mine and always seeking more info!
Great video sir!! Question: I live in south Florida where it’s summer year round, how could I induce dormancy?
That's a bit tricky. I know a lot of people grow in Florida. Some people use a fridge or some kind of cooler to keep them stored in during winter time. It might be worth finding someone who grows local there and ask what they do for dormancy!
Thanks my dude 👍🏼
@@brianacosta9685 Honestly they should be fine outside during the dormancy phase here in florida. Here is a forum discussing it.

I just got my first Venus fly trap from a local greenhouse. It’s a baby🤗baby traps are very adorable 🥰. The north winters will be a challenge . I have never winterized a plant and hope I’ll be able to bring them in without hurting them.
Dormancy can be tricky, but you can do it! Here is a video I did all about dormancy. ua-cam.com/video/Qb5bSNwo-uM/v-deo.html
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub i see. Thank u!
I ve got a vft from a supermarket,it was pretty small but I put insects in all of its traps and now it s thriving and growing new traps.
Right on! I'm glad that it's taking off!
Just got mine from Walmart, he was the only live one there and just barely, so let’s see if he survives lol
I’m gonna get mine today 😁
Good luck to both of you! I hope they take off!!
Tip you can refill your tray by top watering as long as you're careful and its hot enough outside
Definitely! I do this on occasion. I also remove the tray on occasion so I can flush the plant.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ok thank you :)
Of course, glad I could help Justin! Hopefully you will be able to keep them alive and watch them thrive. They are such a cool plant!
Also from Arkansas and subbed. (Hey!)
Welcome!!

I guess since I live in NC I can feel safe leaving them outside
100%, no better place to be for venus flytraps! Leave them out in full sun then outside all winter!
Got mines from Home Depot, love these plants.
Home Depot usually has pretty healthy traps. Not all the time, but I've seen some really nice big and healthy plants there.
i bought 4 from walmart today on clearance for 1.25 each

Thank you so much! It's super important that we support each other!!
Omfg my baby! I put her in potting soil! I made an order to pick up first thing in the am for peer moss and perlite!
Make sure to rinse off the roots with distilled water before you repot it in the peat moss & perlite mix. As long as it wasn't in the potting soil for too long, it should be okay!
Carnivores plant nursery would be cool even an online shop
Dont be hard in yourself. These plants go against most conventional growing knowledge. You're on the right path now!!
If you can't get distilled water try rain water. We'll water or if chlorinated tap water use treatment or leave a few days to clear out chlorine should work
I've never tried the treatment, but as long as the water is measuring low on the TDS meter, it should work!
Another great video!! Thank you for making this. It is extremely helpful for me and my new hobby. At what point should I remove traps that are black. Typically the trap itself turns black and then the stem dies over time. Should I clip the entire stem when the trap turns black? I have plenty of other stems.
Anything that's black can go. The dead black stuff can promote mold and mildew, i like to get rid of it! Thank you for the kind words!
They had a bunch of these babies at Walmart on clearance with a lot of them already dead, I salvaged a few that had more live ones but they looked so sad. Thank you for this video! Omw to get some perlite, I really want these to grow!
Awesome, I really hope you can bring them back to good health! Good luck, and let me know sometime how it goes!
those are the biggest and best looking VFT's ive ever seen from any walmart!! ive been growing these since i was a child and it usually takes a lot of care to get one to look like that.
It can definitely be hit and miss. I've seen some really nice ones right off the truck but I've seen some pretty pathetic ones too.
Glad I could help support your dream :) We'll be getting a few of these guys this weekend to go into my new greenhouse! This was really helpful.
I really appreciate your support, thank you so much! Glad I could help!
Fungus gnats also cause root rot. Too watering typically draws more gnats.
Excellent videos Sir. Your knowledge of these underated beauties is phenomenal. I'm spreading the word of your channel in my plant enthusiast community. Thanks
Aaron, that comment means the world to me my friend. I appreciate you doing that so much. I'm definitely going to keep them coming!
I bought one the other day and it’s been doing so good 😭🤘🏻 love this plants!
Awesome!!
Ty, I had mine in a terracotta nested in a ceramic glazed pot with 2in distilled water to simulate bog. I will switch to plastic
Good call! I have heard that really old Terracotta are okay as they have leeched everything out. But if it's a newer pot, you will probably want to switch it over.
Can you repot during dormancy? I just bought mine and it’s still in their death trap
I live in Florida and I’m afraid it could be too humid outside! it rains buckets everyday in the summer
They won’t mind the humidity or the rain IF the pot drains properly. However, you Never want to let them dry out completely.
Simple solution to setting off traps during repotting: Feed your plant. I've put a fly in every trap before putting my plant in new pot, they closed and I handled it without much stress.
My Sarracenia though... that one is tricky.
This is an amazing tip, I'd never even thought of that. Great callout. I'll likely do this in the future!
Just picked up my first Venus fly trap ever from Walmart was walking thru with my wife and seen them and just couldn't help my self always wanted one...your video was definitely very informative glad I checked it out thank you 💪
Awesome, glad the video helped, thanks for watching!!
This was a great video my only question is how do you trim/ remove old or dead traps/ flowers?
When they turn black just cut them off. I usually wait until the trap and leaf turn completely black.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ahhh, that’s very smart; thank you for explaining your reasoning!

I just bought one in Walmart. I always wanted one since I was a kid
You will love it! They are really cool plants!
They look so good! My Walmart rescues were in such bad shape back at the end of March
It's really hit and miss. It depends on the batch, but even more it depends on when you found them off the truck. If it was right off the truck, they are usually in pretty good shape.
Omg. I love your channel. Your like my VFT spirit guide. Ty for sharing your knowledge.

So grateful for your videos, feel more confident with my new plant friend
Great Joe, I wish you the best of luck growing the flytrap!
Thank you! I recently got one for m home Depot and just because we have in the yard and wanted to get rid of them, this is great content!
Thank you Aaron!
Got mine from Lowes. Hoping to save them, they have a couple black sprouts that died. Should I clip them off? And if so down the the dirt or just the "flower" part? Thank u SO much. This was super helpful
You definitely should trim the black off. For potting, put dirt just a tiny bit above the rhizome, or white root part.
