In this video we explore the "lost" Wings albums. Why I think there are actually more than we think. We explore the contents and take a look at some of them.
‘Hot hits and cold cuts’ has also got to be considered lost wings LP - featuring a lot of studio tracks from 1973 intended for a double album ‘Red Rose Speedway. Also three members of Wings play on ‘All Those Years Ago’.
You forgot to mention the tracks Take It Away, Average Person, Ballroom Dancing and Keep Under Cover from Tug Of War and Pipes Of Peace - all were rehearsed as songs for Wings’ follow up to Back To The Egg, and many featured Linda and Denny, as well as Paul. Rainclouds was another Paul, Denny and Linda track, recorded after Wings broke up, and was the B side to Ebony and Ivory.
Brilliant point Simon. Tug Of War should've been a Wings album and was originally to be a double album which turned into Pipes Of Peace. In fact further into Paul's 'solo' years is "My Carnival" by Wings on the flip side of "Spies Like Us".
In the mid to late 1970s Paul McCartney often talked about releasing unused tracks from his albums and titling it "Cold Cuts." He, at one point, mentioned the CC album might be a double because he had so much unused material. He never spoke of it again after 1980 or so. There are several really good non-album b-sides on his singles that, if assembled, would make an album. B-sides like "I'm Flying to My Home" and "Rainclouds" for example.
In his new Hulu series with Rick Rubin, Paul talks about how he taught himself to memorize music. "We had no recording devices", he says about the early Beatles days, "so we had to make the songs memorable". He also mentions this skill when his inability to read or write musical notes comes up. ("It's all in here", he says, touching his forehead.) So it's very likely that after the stolen demo tape incident in Lagos, Paul was able to "restore" the music almost identically from memory.
Great video, I'd like to get that Linda record! That was also an awesome move by McCartney to buy the Buddy Holly song catalogue in 1976 and then immediately do an album of his tunes! Good album too. Cheers!
Wings appear on The Scaffold's 1975 album "Sold Out" on one cut "Liverpool Lou" song was also produced by Paul. The B Side "Ten Years After On Strawberry Jam."
Andrew, Thank you for this. I LOVE your honesty and pleasing presence here. You are the best reviewer of Beatles stuff I've seen here on UA-cam. THANK YOU!!!

Denny's Japanese tears (1980) has three genuine Wings tracks on it. 1972's I Would Only Smile, 1974's Send Me The Heart and 1979's Weep For Love. They all were contenders for release as Wings tunes, but they ended up as part of a collection of Denny Laine tunes. On several of the other tracks, we have Steve Holley on drums. But three out of eleven(?) might disqualify it as a lost Wings album.

Regarding the Band On The Run demos, they must exist somewhere. There have been plenty of opportunities for their release and yet they have never surfaced. Anybody got any clues?

Paul claims that he got the idea for Broad Street from Chris Thomas telling him that the masters for Never Mind the Bollocks (Sex Pistols) went missing.
Also, along with McGear, Holly Days, and Wide Prairie (I’m kind of hesitant calling McGear a Wings album since none of the members sing on it), there’s also Japanese Tears (3 songs have everyone, and almost every other song has at least 2 members), and multiple unreleased Wings albums, like Cold Cuts, Rupert, One Hand Clapping, Last Flight, and Wings Over Europe (just recently released in 2018, but in a very limited and exclusively physical capacity.)
Hi Andrew ,I have the Holly days Denny Laine album but no holiday sheet My album is on the EMI label is the original. The Rupert the bear the bear soundtrack is a lost Wings album from 1978.I have on a bootleg.Hope your ok
*HOLLY DAYS?* Never heard of it until now. Its _Wings playing all Buddy Holly songs._ ,but Denny Laine singing them! I think I'll pass on that one. I heard it came out in 1977. Maybe it wasn't released in the USA? If I wanted to listen to Buddy Holly. I 'll put in his CD. But I was never a fan so, I don't own any Buddy Holly Cd's. But I don't think I could listen to Denny Laine singing on an entire album! He does great backup sing with Linda for Paul. And he does sing a few good songs on some of the Wings Albums. But he's really not a good singer like Paul.
I always liked how Linda’s vocals sounded as a backing to Paul’s but that’s where it ends. I’m sure she was a terrific lady but she’s no lead singer. That aside, it’s pretty cool these tracks exist. I’m sure it makes Paul happy
Well have you ever heard the song Cook of the House? I think she's a wonderful lead vocalist she sort of has a twangy almost southern hillbilly type voice that I guess is an acquired taste but if you've never heard that tune give it a listen and see if you are still of the same opinion also her album Wide Prairie is fantastic!
How about Tug of War. Isn't the story it was started as a Wings album. Denny can be clearly heard and is credited on many tracks. He also gets a credit on Pipes of Peace which made use some leftover tracks
Wings was a 5 piece for back to the egg. They continued working together into the 80s but by tug of war wings was no more and Denny worked on tug of war but not as wings.
There are bootlegs on YT of Wings rehearsing some of the tracks that made Tug Of War, and Pipes Of Peace - Take It Away and Average Person were definitely Wings songs, and also a rough version of Keep Under Cover and Ballroom Dancing.
@@gordons-alive4940 Paul didn’t fire Denny, Denny quit because Paul had no concrete plans to tour for a long while after John’s death and the previous year’s cancelled tour in Japan (because of Paul’s weed bust) meant Denny wasn’t making any money-and touring brought in by far the most money for him.
What are the 2 lost Wings albums that everyone knows about???? I dont know about them. 😆 would like to know about them though. Huge Beatles and Paul McCartney fan here.
Mentioning "Cold Cuts" right now I could go for a nice "Combo Sub" and wash it down with a nice cold Beer on this Hot Sunday Afternoon in July 2021! Never heard of " *Cold Cuts* " but I read up on it and it says: Cold Cuts is an unreleased album of outtakes by _Paul McCartney_ . The album was originally planned to be released in 1975 and McCartney revisited the project several times over the years until it was abandoned permanently in the late 1980s. The songs on the album were recorded during his solo career and with Wings in the 1970s and 1980s.
Most people probably see Wings as a just another name for Paul.. Not sure there’s a lot of interest on the backing bands side projects.. the stolen Nigerian tapes would be interesting to hear.
@@AndrewBrooks I only have what sounds like a cassette copy. Are there any high quality bootlegs? I guess they will eventually be remixed and released, probably after Paul has left us and the kids presumably run things.
WHAT WAS "WINGS" ANYWAY, BESIDES PAUL MCCARTNEY'S ROTATING BACKING BAND? - In the name of "Democracy" he let everyone in the band have a go at writing and performing their songs on "At The Speed Of Sound" - When you hear that record you realize why Paul was the breadwinner of the band.
I very much liked Denny’s song “Time to Hide” and Jimmy’s “Wino Junko” and Joe’s vocals in “Must Do Something About It.” Not everyone can be Paul McCartney-an insanely rare one in a billion kind of talent. I don’t think it was wrong at all to let the others have songs!
When "Junior's Farm" came out as a single and had the B side of "Sally G" I heard at the time these were choice songs recorded in Nashville. At the time they were going to New Orleans to make songs for Venus & Mars, Junior's Farm & Sally G was alleged to be made in Nashville...thus there was rumored of a Nashville Session prior to New Orleans to make Venus & Mars. I remember reading about this but I have no evidence this was true or not. Maybe you can research better for us McCartney fans--just saying. If it exists, I wonder what other songs never surfaced. ua-cam.com/video/n79mEJ5_zxQ/v-deo.html
My late friend and Nashville A-Team session musician Johnny Gimble played fiddle on "Sally G" - He told me there were several songs he recorded over two or three days with the elite sidemen Paul rounded up for the sessions which included Music City notables & royalty: Chet Atkins - guitar, Floyd Cramer - piano, Bobby Thomson - banjo, Charlie McCoy - harmonica & rhythm guitar, Lloyd Green - pedal steel guitar, Johnny Gimble - fiddle & mandolin and Vassar Clements - fiddle.
One of the criteria to be classified as “Lost” to me…the album had an original release but for whatever reason it got pulled (Badfinger WYWH) or it just hasn’t seen the light of day in the reissue department. In the case of Badfinger, Dan Matovina has worked to get their music out there. The problem is, it’s only been given a limited release which once gone, WYWH is once again…Lost. Other reasons could be bc the master tapes no longer exist (Jim Sullivan) or there is an ownership/business Hangup. There could be other underlying reasons but that’s my take…
Mcgear is a Beatles album. Hardly or a wings album...Paul played bass on James Taylor's first album you gonna say that's a Beatle album too cause a Beatle is on it ? Yes Paul is on a couple tracks on mcgear...nor is it a lost Wings album
Hence the title of this video is lost wings albums. Wild prairie isnt listed as a wings album, Holly days isn't listed as a wings album. But all of them have wings performing on all or most of the tracks.
What Linda’s singing proves is that any chorus will sound like the worst singer singing. Luckily for Linda she had a pleasant relaxed lack of focus voice which worked in the 70s. With the Beatles, through this prism, If all are singing-RINGO, if 3 sing-JOHN, 2-GEORGE. PAUL is a heck of a singer. JOHN at 3 is the reason the Beatles were so strong.
It's ridiculous that Wings never got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
Is it necessary?

This was a fun video and a great thought on it all about Wings !!!! Take care and all the best to you Andrew :"} . !!!
Glad you enjoyed it Brad
It was a good one .. Thanks !!!
:").
Never heard the _McGear_ album. If I want to listen to Paul, I'll put one of his or a Beatles album on. 🚶🏿♂️🚶🏿♂️🚶🏿♂️🚶🏿♂️
lol you are right but ... It is just for fun :). But I am right there with you on that one !!
Nice!
Hot Hits Cold Cuts. It's bootlegged so many times Paul never released it...
True but in the early 80s he was working on its official release. It was scrapped and then the bootleggers released it.
Paul, Linda and Denny all sing on McGear (backing vocals - Paul does one song with Mike too - double lead).
@@flyingkillerrobots877 I meant lead
@@justanotherrandomcrit8115 Right on.
Hi Andrew ,I have the Holly days Denny Laine album but no holiday sheet My album is on the EMI label is the original.
The Rupert the bear the bear soundtrack is a lost Wings album from 1978.I have on a bootleg.Hope your ok
Yes a few people have mentioned the Rupert album.
And he does sing a few good songs
on some of the Wings Albums. But he's really not a good singer like Paul.
Denny Laine's Album Japanese Tears has unreleased Wings songs on it..
You forgot the Rupert Soundtrack from around 1978. Great show!
Wasn't sure if it was wings rather than just Macca
@@AndrewBrooks Laurence Juber plays on it
@@AndrewBrooks there's Wings doing overdubs on that one in '78 and they must have been on some of the original backing tracks
@@maccaphotos was he the drummer?
@@garychambers5850 no Laurence Juber was lead guitarist in the last lineup of Wings.
@@dommirra5429 I do remember that song. It was a flipside to a McCartney single from the 70s, maybe Junior’s Farm? Honestly it wasn’t one of my faves
The band famous groupies are very like the old wings , and i mean very
How about Tug of War. Isn't the story it was started as a Wings album. Denny can be clearly heard and is credited on many tracks. He also gets a credit on Pipes of Peace which made use some leftover tracks
Oh good point hadn't considered that.
By the time Wings broke up, weren't they a trio? So the breakup basically amounted to Paul firing Denny.
Mcgear and Holly Days.
@@AndrewBrooks cool thanks 😎
You left out a rumored album called COLD CUTS
Linda changes her surname Eastman to Mccartney , Yoko keeps her surname Ono and Yoko Ono is Yoko Ono and Linda is Linda Mccartney
Love Wide Priarie.
What about the cold cuts album .
Yes someone else mentioned that
Mentioning "Cold Cuts" right now I could go for a nice "Combo Sub" and wash it down with a nice cold Beer on this Hot Sunday Afternoon in July 2021!
Never heard of " *Cold Cuts* " but I read up on it and it says: Cold Cuts is an unreleased album of outtakes by _Paul McCartney_ . The album was originally
planned to be released in 1975 and McCartney revisited the project several times over the years until it was abandoned permanently in the late 1980s.
The songs on the album were recorded during his solo career and with Wings in the 1970s and 1980s.
'Hot Hits and Cold Cuts'
I regard the Wings albums simply as McCartney albums.
Not exactly, Danny Laine made a big contribution.
@@jamesleung8679 he may have done but when I go to a Wings album it is to hear Paul. I have no interest in Denny Laine.
cold cuts the unreleased compilation is a lost wings album
My favorite is. Cook of the House
Most people probably see Wings as a just another name for Paul.. Not sure there’s a lot of interest on the backing bands side projects.. the stolen Nigerian tapes would be interesting to hear.
I ihink Red Rose Speedway could be a lost album. Wasn´t it planed as a double album in 1972 and short time later cancelled?
Yes and was issued as a double album a couple of years ago.
Cold Cuts is the lost Wings album.
Surely the 'Rupert the Bear' music would be another lost album?
Yes good point
@@AndrewBrooks I only have what sounds like a cassette copy. Are there any high quality bootlegs? I guess they will eventually be remixed and released, probably after Paul has left us and the kids presumably run things.
I do have a cd of Rupert stuff.
I think you maybe right about its official release
Didn’t Wings back Mike McGear on his solo record?
Yes mcgear
Yes the Mcgear album mentioned in the video.
The unlisted ones were bad enough
Thrilling ton.....
Not a wings album.

@@CiscoDuck What a dream lineup, holy hell. I bet Paul learned a lot from them and I hope they all enjoyed themselves! :)
No offense but there is no lost BOTR album…if the tracks never were recorded proper, then that sounds more like demos, not completed songs.
There could be other underlying reasons but that’s my take…
maybe kambucha lp lost never been on cd
Oh good one.
I had that on tape, many moons ago. Great version of Every Night if I remember rightly!
Mcgear is a Beatles album. Hardly or a wings album...Paul played bass on James Taylor's first album you gonna say that's a Beatle album too cause a Beatle is on it ? Yes Paul is on a couple tracks on mcgear...nor is it a lost Wings album
All of wings back Mike on that album. Paul Linda Denny Jimmy
@@AndrewBrooks yes but it's not listed on the cover as Mike Mcgear with Paul & Wings
Hence the title of this video is lost wings albums. Wild prairie isnt listed as a wings album, Holly days isn't listed as a wings album. But all of them have wings performing on all or most of the tracks.
@@AndrewBrooks how about albums with wings members contributing
i don't much like 'Norton'....in fact only a couple of good tracks in my opinion....Leave It is great
What Linda’s singing proves is that any chorus will sound like the worst singer singing.
