I managed to kill 4/12 store bought tomato starts. This dude resurrects a plant almost as old as my grandpa.

My grandmothers both saved seeds from year to year. They both had varieties that were saved by their grandmothers and so on. When they died those seeds were lost to the sands of time. The varieties they had were hundreds of years old. I felt such a loss when they passed away. I can remember how vigorous and tasty the harvest was. Please keep doing what you are doing.

I am very IMPRESSED by the fact you are more concerned about saving a variety of tomato, than you are making a profit. That shows me you are truly a TRUE gardener! And the fact that it sounds like you also are willing to share "at your discretion" selling some seeds, again not at the high cost of most seeds nowadays by many who "seem" more into it for the money than they are for the plants themselves. I am more of a "lurker" but I keep watching for your updated especially on this exciting journey you are on with this awesome tomato plant! Awesome job! Yahweh bless! (Yea I wouldn't mind being on the list either for some seeds,,,,but most important to me, is the fact you working so hard to save this variety and bring it back) :) Great job!!!!

I was updating my husband on this plant. I said, "Wouldn't it be cool to grow that extinct tomato?" His reply: "Isn't that how Jurassic Park started?"
Great job! I'm excited to buy my seeds from you next year, whether you offer this one or not.

I found some 5 year old tomato seeds in my seed box this year, so I planted them wondering if anything would sprout. One sprouted. I am so excited about growing this plant, so I can only imagine your excitement in growing your 87 year old plant. How cool!!

I love how this guy has stayed loyal to his cause (and his wife - go figure) and is now running a seed company, rivaling even Baker Creek as well other seed companies due to his competitive pricing, that is affordably offering hundreds of varieties of crop plants to home growers. So good for him. Great dude.

Going to take a wild guess since I did some of that earlier this year. Take a sucker, stick in sterile soil. No need for extra water, you'll have about a 75% success rate that way. Other way is to do the water and rooting hormone trick :)

    • @robertchester2801
      @robertchester2801 7 років тому +1

I usually put it good soil as well. I've never had an issue as long as you keep it moist. Luke's idea of putting it in water until it roots is also a great idea.

I remember my great grand mother and great aunt having these tomatoes. They had them for years, saving seeds from one season to the next, I was absolutely devastated growing up when my great grand father passed and the plants where tilled under when the house sold.

as he said in video, he profits plenty from everything else, his reward with this is the satisfaction of bringing these back and making them accessible again, if the seed are super expensive then they aren't accessible

Awesome.... I definitely want to buy seeds when they are available.... I told my Dad about this tomato discovery and sent him the Vids on it.. He thinks it's great.... He was born in 1930 and is 87.. He and mom still put out a small Veg Garden, and I grow a big one.. Would love to start, and get Dad setup with a couple plants.. I agree with Luke, that he and his wife should be the ones selling and distributing the seeds.. There's enough good gardeners out there that can save and pass the seeds to other enthusiasts and keep this special variety going for future generations....

can you do a definition series. like show the difference between a cluster and a super cluster of flowers. how big does a branch have to he before it is a sucker. maybe go over the difference between determinant and indeterminant and what all it means. maybe get a bench you can stand behind.

I would be blessed to get a few of these tomato seeds if and when you decide to sell any.I am living a simple life in a city and garden in a empty lot we were able to buy. Second year of working on the ground and it is starting to get nice.

So well done Luke! The tomato continues to look amazing! I also have no doubt that your trifecta + also helped in your success, it's just a shame it's not available throughout the world (without the huge postage cost).
I remember you spoke to I think Michigan Uni the beginning, are you still in contact with them and told them the awesome success you have had? I know you addressed the issue of other seed saving networks, and that you wouldn't do that, but will you be considering providing any seed to universities/seed diversity conservancy/vault? What I mean is organisations purely concerned with having seed so that if it dies out again it could be revived, not the organisations that will mass produce the seed and make it available in the commercial market?
I have backed you Luke, 110%, all the way along with this (and with anything else!), and will continue to back you and defend you when I can, all the way-If anyone can do it, Luke can, and has! Critical, Negative, self interested trolls have no place here.
Luke maybe young, but he has been a gardener all his life, and is more capable and qualified to handle (and manage) whatever this project of his may bring, moreso than most here. It's rediculous the suggestion that it's offensive that he not profit from his project-it's his project, his success, and his decisions should be respected. Let's not forget this is an extinct variety-were people not listening when Luke said that his priority was preserving the genetics of this extinct variety, not the commercial gain? I think this attitude, in stance of the protection and revival of extinct genetic diversity (vegetable/fruit/herb etc.) should be admired and celebrated, not criticised. I don't think you would ever see Luke knocking back the financial benefits for himself and his family, but I know he would not do anything at the expense of this variety that he has given new life to-he is not that type of person-this tomato variety is incredibly important to him-the decision he has seemingly made to sell the seeds in the store when they become available is testimony to this-and his fairness-which brings me to the next point-
I also have no doubt that Luke will be fair regarding the sale of plant material/seeds, he has never not been completely fair! I anticipate that if you have bought seeds from Luke and successfully imported them to your country, you would have a fair chance of being able to do the same again and buy these seeds when they become available-I agree that to prevent the variety dying out again, many will, and should, from other countries outside the US buy these seeds when they become available, but I don't believe customers from other countries should be given priority, or will be given priority in buying, nor do I think Luke should 'give seeds away' to customers in other countries purely for the aim of spreading the diversity of growing locations of this variety. No doubt, whatever Luke decides, I know it will be fair-he has demonstrated this with the sale of the orange rousolini variety that he sells-if they are available, he will make them available for sale, in a fair way and at a fair price (maybe he might do something like a ballot for the first seeds if there is huge interest, whereby you enter your name in to be considered to buy the seeds-no matter what he does, I'm sure it will be fair!)-he has already said that-once again, he is about the variety and genetic diversity, not the money! It remains to be seen how many will want seeds from this variety- I anticipate many thousands more than the interest in orange rousolini, potentially-especially if it gets out there in the mainstream gardening world, what Luke has achieved- Let's also not forget that this is a living thing, and crop failures resulting in unavailability of seed happens! There is still a possibility, (please, please, please let's hope not!) that even though this plant has flowers on it, seeds may not result! I do think that taking as many suckers as possible, without harming the mother plant, to hopefully propagate more clones of the mother plant is totally the right thing to do-but again, totally expected as something Luke would do-because he is all about the preservation of this variety!
Can I also say that we are all excited, I'm sure Luke knows that-but please can I encourage some PATIENCE! Loosing your heads over some seeds is rediculous! Luke will make the seeds available, when he can, to who he can! You can't expect anything more than that! I will wait patiently, for when the time comes and I'm able to buy the seeds I will, i can assure you that I too would really love to try growing this tomato! Can I suggest everyone else does the same, and that can we all be positive, considerate, patient and supportive beings of Luke, Sindy and their families in the meantime!

This is ama/ing. Some seed, if properly stored, can be viable after ten years. Tomato seeds have even been known to germinate after as long as 16 years! Yours is 87 years old. You really should give some seed of this plant for research.

I would love to grow these. I only grow one type of tomato at a time so there would be no risk of cross pollination. This needs to be preserved for future generations.

This is as exciting as bringing back a great breed of cattle from dna. Maybe in my lifetime there will be enough seeds to share, but I'm pushing 70 so don't have more than 20 good years of gardening left.
