So after finding out about this a few days ago, I had to see where it all began. Wow!! To think that it started from a little root peeking out, and now today with a whole bunch of good folks getting ready to try it out in their own gardens next spring...this is just amazing!!
You are a nice kid and all, but putting them in a closed container caused the mold, the seeds themselves were not sterile, they had dried mold spores on them, the sugar water and closed environment made a perfect 'Mold Farm'. To prevent mold make sure you have some air flow, unknown if they were viable as the mold would have killed most of them. I would have sent some on to the Seed Saver bank just incase you messed them up (ie, they would not have made a 'Mold Farm'). Also, disposable gloves are Cheap at the Pharmacy, you will always have some amount of oils on your hands even if you just washed them. Who knows how many would have survived if handled correctly.

You can see on his website they haven't got this variety for sale. But to me the worst part is they keep this video up which many people perceive as a valid instruction for how to sprout old seeds, which may have lead to others following these instructions and lost additional rare seed varieties. It has quite a lot of views.
The lettuce wouldn't have sprouted. Books and articles done by experienced, professional gardeners would have told him that lettuce seed doesn't sprout. You need to buy new every year or two or save your own seed. I really wish he had grown only a part of the seeds, maybe 1/4 instead of dumping so many seeds in. I feel really bad about the tomatoes.
Huh? Don’t believe everything you read. No clue about 87 years, but 15 year old lettuce seed is fine. Sprouts in just dirt. Unlike him, I just spread enough seeds for the pot I want to use, so it takes me a long time to use a whole packet, since I also grow other mixes and collect seeds. But still have the old seeds and will grow another pot next time I set up my salad pots. Also accidently dropped one packet into the grass. It looks like it might have gotten damp, but hey, they will still get a chance since the packet is still intact.
Happy about the tomatoes and radishes!!!! Bummer about the others. I hope you didn't throw away the beet seeds. Need to pick out the ones with no mold and put them in another container! Keep trying! They might not be done!

I would put those seeds in a large box with a growing medium, and cover lightly with said growing medium. Keep moist, with that spray bottle always. Some seeds take their sweet time. Don't give up, try more then one way of doing things, always. Sunshine kills molds, ventilation helps too. Sugar promotes the growth of molds. These seeds are like micro premature babies, lots of tender care needed.

Next time try in different methods of sprouting like just plain soil, ive never had any luck with the high humidity paper towel thing always the same everything gets rotten. Good luck man
In the paper towel method, you need to make sure to not make the container too wet, it must be only damp. I make sure this happens by either spilling out excess water or just using a spray(one or two sprays is enough).
Interesting. It always worked for me. Thats how i grow almost every plant of mine. Dont make the towel super wet. Only get a dpray bottle and make it half wet. Not dry but not dripping. Fold it, put it in ziplock, label. Profit.

You have to help me. My great Aunt Ora collected and saved these seeds in 1918. Sealed cases wrapped in bag paper, kept in a chest in my dad's house. Some are garden seeds, there's a detailed growth record of the plants with locations in a botanical book she kept. I would love to restore some real native Prarie here.

Hehe :D. I have grown 20 year old tomato seeds with good success. I'm sure you'll get a few (I swear I see 3 there) but be patient as they can take longer than usual and be quite erratic. I've had some I thought goners show up as sprouts 3 months later. The real challenge is growing them out to maturity. Good luck and keep up up to date :)

Kelly Richardson isn't salicylic acid what's found in acne medicine? I thought aspirin was acetylated salicylic acid (acetylsalicylic acid)? Ive heard of aspirin being put in water for flowers to keep them fresh longer so that makes sense. Probably breaks down back to salicylic acid pretty easily for the plants to absorb. I've read that salicylic acid is used as a plant hormone so probably so. It would be likely be better to use it in pure form which can be found in acne medicines and even some wart remover products (usually around 17% Salicylic acid) . I'd be curious to know for the acne wipes, if it would be possible to use them as a medium to germinate seeds on. That would pretty interesting if so. Or, if putting wart remover on a seed would help/work... That just sounds like a bad idea but who knows...
I've been watching a lot of vids on seed starting and a couple people that I saw used a 16oz. bottle of water and mixed in a cap of hydrogen peroxide then used that to dampen the paper towel. It's supposed to stop mold growth. Haven't tried yet but have all my supplies gathered and plan to start in the next few days. Congrats on that tomato. Hope you get many more.

if you can bring back that variety of tomato, not seen in almost 90 years, man what a find! and what an accomplishment! if you get it to grow, I would save every tomato and do nothing but save the seeds. Absolutely fantastic!
throw the beets in a pot and they'll sprout. same with some of the lettuce. they hate being in really warm temps. most gardeners are aware that lettuce seeds hate heat = heater vents. let me know when the tomatoes are done. I'd like some seeds. good job on the rest.

I still would have taken the paper towels and buried them "seeds and all" under about a half-inch of soil and kept it moist for the next two weeks. Ya never know if maybe one was playing hard to get. Glad to see some are sprouting, I wouldn't give up on the seeds that didn't show any progress. You might try a few other methods on small batches of the dormant seeds. I have found several procedures others have used. Probably very few tried on 87 year old seeds. Good Luck

I'm all about heirloom preservation. I grow the Carolina runner peanut, which was technically extinct for a while. I sell seed as well but nothing like this!
I am thrilled about the tomato seed sprout. If by chance, you actually manage to get a viable plant from those seed and raise them to maturity, I would love to have a few seed. I will gladly grow them and keep them as an active cultivar in my garden. The thought of growing an extinct tomato variety is thrilling to say the least!

I would still try sticking the mouldy weds in a pot of soil! Sometimes the soil can trick them into germinating, even if you think al is lost!
I guess this proves the expiration dates on seed packets don't mean diddly squat. I always buy seeds end of season when they're 75%off

Yes. I feel like the ones that molded in the near 100% humidity would've been better to direct sow in soil.

I am thrilled about the tomato seed sprout. If by chance, you actually manage to get a viable plant from those seed and raise them to maturity, I would love to have a few seed. I will gladly grow them and keep them as an active cultivar in my garden. The thought of growing an extinct tomato variety is thrilling to say the least!
It's crazy to think that the "random guy" I've been watching and learning from for the past couple of years could be responsible for bringing back an extinct variety! Dude, baby that plant and get the seeds out there!!! I can promise you that I'd buy 'em!

you need to use Gibberellic acid on very old seeds also you need to use hydrogen peroxide to keep them from getting moldy

Good work, to try the hard to sprout ones, you could put them in the freezer a few days before sprouting.
I had 20 year-old Dark Opal Basil that was still viable. No surprise about the lettuce. Its seed is notoriously short-lived.
