    Luke, we bless you and are grateful to you for resurrecting the original genetic strain (from 87 years ago) of the Giant Crimson Tomato. Thank you! As an avid seed-saver and "preservationist" myself, I cannot begin to describe how much your efforts fill my heart! Reviving seeds from this variety will be part of your "legacy". When you are ready to release seeds from this variety, we will be most grateful. In the interim, please keep up the good work. We enjoy your videos and appreciate all that you do. Thank you.

    You may already be doing this but just in case. Try adding some heat to get the seeds to sprout. This time of year my house is only about 67 degrees. The seeds tend to germinate better at 75 to 80 degrees. Try layering soil mixes to start seeds that germinate slowly. The top layer should drain water quickly and the bottom layer should absorb water. That should keep the seeds from rotting before they sprout and provide a source of water for the roots once they sprout.

    General Hydroponics Rapid Rooters are awesome for starting any kind of seed. Better than rockwool IMHO and once sprouted can be planted in soil, coir, hydroton or even larger rockwool cubes. You wouldn't be disappointed if you tried them, but I know you are stubborn and have your own ways, haha. For comment readers though, please research and pick up a bag of them. Another hot tip? Reverse Osmosis filtered water.

    I wonder what these tomatoes taste like and what their nutrient cont is compared to today's tomatoes?
    Have we improved tomatoes or made them worse in order to mass produce them?

    • @laurelsporter
      @laurelsporter 5 років тому +1

      Worse, to mass produce, but varieties have been made better for home and small market gardeners. There is a definite push, now, for quality over quantity, in smaller spaces. Some newer OP and hybrid varieties have even more good stuff, like carotenoids, than those past.
      But, it's an open question on how much better even those are, on the whole, compared to ones like this that he's growing, that have been lost to history. It's been realized pretty recently that lower producing wild greens would have offered enough Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats, with a good balance between them, to have allowed our inland ancestors to forego fish, and still develop well in tough times (when grazing animals, which also have healthier fats than factory farmed ones, were scarce). But, those we have bred for food don't cut it, and farming methods don't help, either. In the past, people would just selectively breed the local plants, so we had like hundreds of varieties of kales, spinaches, and so on, in North America, prior to the growth of big ag.
      There are people out there trying to find and save some of these old plants, lest they go extinct, and studying them may well provide us with critical information that we could use for future plant breeding, as raw production and distribution become less and less of a problem (even today, almost all starvation and malnutrition is primarily political in nature, and we make enough food to feed billions of extra people).
      That was longer than I was planning....

    • @cadenrolland5250
      @cadenrolland5250 5 років тому +1

      @@laurelsporter 100% agree on all points. I'd like to see nutrient content on fruits and vegetables. It used to be assumed good but you can't assume that any more. If we could blend the push for healthier nutrition content with e mass production of big ag, that would be the best combo for everyone, but it has to be pushed for.

    • @bakachiki491
      @bakachiki491 5 років тому

      @@laurelsporter Well quantity is needed if you consider the world's population and everything, older varieties might taste better but they don't grow as well normally so they end up being harder to grow and more expensive

    • @laurelsporter
      @laurelsporter 5 років тому +1

      @@bakachiki491 which is not a problem for (a) home gardeners, (b) small market gardeners, and (c) specialty regional farmers, if not others. As well, LEDs are allowing dense fast growing of common herbs and greens in smaller spaces, not using farmland (also often less water, synthetic fertilizer, pesticides, etc., at a minor added labor and power cost). It's really not a practical problem, like it may have been a few decades ago. As more greens, herbs, and small vegetables get grown not using farmland, it will be even less of one (which is good for other reasons, as traditional big age is not good for the land, but other methods reduce predictability).
      Esoteric plants aren't going to displace the cheap cabbages and onions on produce shelves, even if some gain more popularity. They'll displace regular vegetables at your weekend markets, roadside stands, CSAs, and high-end grocers, just as things like different basils, purple carrots, and quality tomatoes do, already.

    • @MilkAndHoneyAcreage
      @MilkAndHoneyAcreage 5 років тому

      Depends on how you look at it. They usually contain more nutrients now but they are also modified to handle processing and to be larger and more uniform and all of those sacrifice the quality in flavor.
