    We just went through T. S. Cindy here in the New Orleans area. My tomatoe plants were on AVG. 10' +. Even with the plants in cages they were knocked down to about 3' tall. What a shame. It also did damage to my eggplant. I know that they will grow back. I just have a lot of work ahead of me and being a disabled veteran it's going to take time and help from anyone else that wants to help me out. I did this last year and I had my most efficient yield I've ever had on this property (over the last 10-years). I live next to a large wooded area and I've been dealing with many issues to get a good garden. The first year, I achieved three edible tomatoes out of 26 plants. The plants all started well and grew to be very large 5 foot to 6 foot plants with many flowers. This first year was an education for me because in previous years at other locations, I had grown many productive plants with little effort on my part but now with all the fungal load from the woods I was getting powdery mildew on my melons and cuks and blight on my tomatoes. I finally realized I can't kill it within the normal budget of a home gardener and I had to manage it with copper soap, epson salts, and neem oil. Last year, using your suggestion, and all of these neutralizers, I was able to get almost a 75% yield .

    I *highly* recommend you put some asparagus crowns in with your strawberry bed. The two work very well together. In the Spring, when you're looking for berries, you'll also be getting repeated sprigs of asparagus. In Summer, when you let the 'guses grow into ferns, they shade the berry plants nicely, and keep berry pests away.

    I tried the tomato trick last year and it worked great. My yield was fantastic. The fruit was plentiful and beautiful.

    I saw that if you put plastic forks into the soil and put the strawberry over the tines. It helps keep them off the ground, so you get more berries not eaten by bugs or birds. Let me know if you try it

      I've tried a few methods to keep my strawbs from being eaten over the past 12 years, and, it's always the slugs & birds that get them, so, my advice is to grow as many plants as you can, that way you're in with a chance of getting some fruit for yourself... :)

    • @twocvbloke
      @twocvbloke 7 років тому +3

      I tried straw one year, made little difference, them slugs & snails became immune to the stuff, or had learned to jump, cos they still stole my strawbs!! :\

      +twocvbloke they are not immune to sharp eggshells. Put the sharp side up and all over! It is like broken glass. Dont crush them too fine!

      Save some old mayo jar lids and press them at ground level. Then pour some cheap beer in them. Slugs will be GONE !~!~!~!

    My tomato plants are in my greenhouse with a bamboo stake next to each plant for support.
    Every lunchtime I walk up and down the centre and gently tap each cane.
    Finally I give the greenhouse a good soaking in order to increase the mid-day humidity and this helps the pollination too.

    Getting frisky with tomatoes. Yes vibrations work really well!!

  • @dillontravis7265
    @dillontravis7265 6 років тому

    A tuning fork also works quite well. Another interesting tidbit is that bumble bees don't vibrate their wings to release the pollen, but they vibrate their thorax at a specific frequency to do so!

    Gosh, you got a lot of comments on this one. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate the tips. After so many stuff ups this season from snails feeding n cats using my garden as a kitty litter tray [I wasn't wanting that sort of manure] I was so pleased to see my first truss of tomato blossoms. My finding and watching this video at this time has helped. Blessings

    I've done something similar but with a cheap paint brush, like what you'd paint watercolors with. It might not matter but I like getting the pollen on the bristles and transferring it amongst different flowers.
