@@lamentz27 I want this mod to exist and I want to see a full playthrough.
You reminded me of my first time playing Dark Souls. lol. I didn't even know what "humanity" was, summonings were a thing, weight of armor, and to top it off I went through the spooky skeletons dungeon first and cleared it (boy was I stupid; I remember telling myself: "so this is why they say it's hard... you die a lot"). I went totally blind; the only place where I used the internet was wearing the ring to go fight what's his face.
Of course. It actually would make it better
Its sad to see people's wievpoint of dark souls is "make player die easy"
Yup. The Dark's Soul formulae is not that simple
If there's 1 thing I love about dark souls, it's the world. The amount of thought that goes into the level design and the lore behind locations are what make the experience for me.
Its fucking awesome!
It's a whole dynamic of different things it's one of the most fun games to make in my opinion! It's not just a rage game!
Hard but fair. With enough skill you can get past encounters on your first try even with surprises thrown at you; its all about adaptability.
I like to think its like running when it comes to the game's mechanics and fighting. Like an experienced Dark Souls player understands the core mechanics and can finish the game faster or die less from bosses and all, but those same players give themselves new challenges or PRs for the game. Dark Souls allows any player of any experience to create a challenge, but still complete it. A player with no experience even in RPGs let alone this style of RPG can still beat the game and even enjoy it. Like with running it sucks while doing it and you will get mad and want to give up, but you keep trying and when you finished it you are like "Hell yeah, I did it, now can I do it better?"
Decay of Logos: Open world Dark Souls with a barrel that has arms.

I’ll be completely honest I got Deaths Gambit and I really really loved it. The director, Jean Canellas did look through the criticism like this. And they are coming out with a massive expansion for the game that will be completely free. It looks very promising with tons of new unique weapons and zones. Obviously this isn’t an ad but I genuinely believe they deserve a lot more attention.
From what I heard, most of the issues the game has(wonky level design, poor combat, limited weapons) are due to the devs planning a lot more than they could handle, and then needing to cut back like half of the content to ship the game on time.
I really hope this update fixes the game, since we effectively got half of what the kickstarter said it would be.

Stamina meter: **exists**
Everyone: OMG, THIS IS LIKE DARK SOULS!
Yeah this is an incredibly bullshit thing that happens too often now, people keep mistaking commonly used functionality or even combinations of them to originate from the game just because it also features them (and generally well implemented).
Bonfires are another example of things people too often seem to attribute as something unique even in base functionality (save/restart/restart and sometimes fast travel point that's need to be found and activated) - when it's more a matter of mechanical and contextual implementation that makes it stand out in From games.
If games don't have features that define Souls-series why even call it a souls-like? At least Rogue-likes and Rogue-lites generally make sense, because it's very specific functionality. I love getting recommendations as much as the next person, but it could use a much stricter definition imo.
@@drunkenmuse I think it's really weird because people could re-invent the simpler mechanics without any awareness of what Dark Souls is. I'm fine with people compartmentalizing things for their own understanding, but I don't like it when people say something is a rip-off because it has a few similarities.

So glad to see Immortal Unchained included. Reminds me how much I love Remnant: From the Ashes as a gun-play Souls-like.
Too bad it fails in so many respects. Because it looks nice for sure and there was definitely room for a gun-centric Dark Souls. The problem really seems to be that while Remnant did the same idea it actually CHANGED things to work with guns whereas a lot of this is basically "Here's Dark Souls but you have to beat every enemy with a time-consuming sorcery!". You can't just throw guns into Dark Souls with the mechanics completely unchanged and it work.

Yes man blasphemus is really nice
Death's Gambit is getting a complete overhaul at the moment. The changes might really push this game on a higher level.
The Soulsborne series uses a lot of stock sound effects. Many of the ones used in Bloodborne such as opening doors, the new area noise, and visceral attacks are all used in one of the Jojo seasons.
Me and a friend actually made a document detailing all the dark souls sound effects we could find in various anime. I tried to document all the ones in Jojo, but they quickly grew to frequent to bother noting down.
Notably the same DS3 scythe R1 sound effect was used in Stardust Crusaders. a lot when stuff was being cut. I couldn't help but notice it because I hated that awful sound. I know the Part 3 anime came first but I watched it right after I replayed DS3 so that's why I noticed haha

i always find crash bandicoot put in the "souls like" category hilarious.
have you not played the original? It's a bitch! Makes senses why it's a souls like. XD
Most people have such a loose interpretation of souls like it's rediculous. So it doesn't surprise me that Crash bandicoot is somehow considered Souls Like despite predating it and working on different mechanics and systems.
It's just like the one game. He opens up saying it's like Diablo and Ico and yet somehow claims it to be like dark souls later without actually showing anything particularly dark souls to it that isn't part of either of those other games. yet somehow it's a Soul's Like.
@@Quandry1 It's like porn, I can't exactly describe what a souls-like is, but I know it when I see it. That said, I would not call any Crash Bandicoot game I have seen a souls-like, so unless the new one is doing something I don't know about that sounds a little crazy.
As for that one game. Most of the time it's users who tag games "souls-like", although some games talk about it in their advertising. If users call it that, they must see something. I dunno, I was not really paying attention during that bit, the game looked dull. There was dodge rolls and melee combat in a dark maze-like level though right? Depending on the combat, that is all it takes, throw in bonfires and you got a souls-like as far as most people think. That doesn't mean it's good.
@@Quandry1
Super Mario Bros 2 JP a Soulslike?
@@charliericker274 People throw that onto their games as advertising to suck people in and get them buying. Often whether it's true or not.
Soul's like has some certain characteristics or you might as well throw the whole term out (which I'm not entirely against) for Retro gaming to begin with. Partly because a lot of what the Soul's games do is retro to the point that to some of the older games things like Dark Souls Difficulty is not all that standout. neither is some of the clipping that some of the mobs do that was incidental in some older games but actually is intentional in some of the souls games purely to artificially ramp up difficulty and unpredictability. Nor is the respawning of enemies because some of those older games are actually worse about enemy respawns than a souls game is due to hardware limitations of the time.
What makes a soul's Game a souls game. Is a Combination of a classic 3D action adventure style, Mixed with a bit of a varied combat/gear based system and most importantly a somewhat rogue-like "death is not the end" way of handling player death combined with a somewhat unique leveling system that influence each other to a fair extent based on the points spent.
The problem is that more and more of the games that people call souls likes have little to none of these. It's a combination of these details that is important. Simply Being a 3d action style game with combat isn't enough. That existed way before the souls games and is not enough to narrow something down to souls like. The Atmosphere of the games often isn't even enough because without the story context to them the environments of Most Souls games are fairly generic. So you need to have a lot of the elements and more importantly some or prefferably most/all of the more unique mechanics systems in place to make it a souls like.
true Souls-like games do not have to drastically mirror each other in appearance and feel in truth. Games like BloodBorne and Nioh which take a lot of the same concepts and leveling system and often the "death isn't the end" approach to your characters proves this quite well.
This is true of some other "genre's" as well. If something is a metroid-vania. It has certain characteristics, mechanics, and play styles. Same with Rogue-likes. There are things that are distinct about them and there is not necessarily a lot of room for overlap. Even when there is some overlap there is often some key differences to the way they function to why they aren't the same. As is the case of some Rogue-likes and some Souls-like games. The key difference to whether one is the first or the second is in how they handle their specific "death is not the end" mechanic inherent to those kinds of games in the areas that they do overlap.
What I love about Iron is that he doesn't take the piss on anyone, he provides actual good advice about all games he plays in a manner which is better than 99% of so called professional reviewers. I think he would be excellent to hire as a before release qa.
Okay, I will say, having like eight set characters that you have to rotate through when you die is a really interesting concept. Hell, do them after classic fantasy classes: paladin, gladiator, cleric, mage, rogue, archer, etc.
Seems like a neat idea for a different experience.
Each character also shares level ups, so when you have to take out a new character you get to build them to your liking. They each also have cool special abilities. The mage takes no fall damage, the knight ignores equipment requirements. Really good game!

you should give death's gambit another try, they released a pretty big (free) expansion/update for it that basically overhauled the game in response to criticism. they updated the combat, changed game mechanics, added more metroidvania elements, updated the world and level design to accommodate for the new metroidvania elements, etc, along with adding more content.
I didn't play the original so I can't say how much it was improved, but I've seen people online say it was improved a lot, and I'm personally really loving it, having not played the original version.
what I can say is that the world is definitely more interconnected now than what you described.
4:50 , Puck has seen better times
HAHA THAT WAS GOOD
You might like DarkMaus, it's a top down "soulslike" where you play as a rat who can wield a sword/spear/Pyromancy etc, it also has a rather bleak artstyle being mainly shadowed gradients.
So. Its. Not. A. Souls. Like
@@lives2872 The bloody ogre fuck you talking about?
@@lives2872 What ? It's definitely a soul like.
Oh, yeah. I loved the game. Hopefully, he'll include it in the next video.
bro 8 seconds ago and its recommended
Was recommended 1 hour for me.
This is the importance to human history... that's why
It got recommended to me like 20 min after release
UA-cam knows that you liked the past two videos with a similar name and content. he didn't upload a video like this in a while. of course its gonna recommend this video
3 hours
Its impressive to see how far that rabbit hole goes. Like so many tried the dark soul kinda vibe. Even guns.
MAN death's gambit has come along way since this

"I died here..."
"The chest killed me..."
✓ chests can kill you
✓ there's a poison swamp
It's Dark Souls confirmed
3:50 award winning game just for that death, i genuinely laughed more than i should. @iron pineapple .. dude.. you should make a whole playthrough of this
Immortal Unchained is actually really good it just takes a while to ramp up. NG+ is great.
Thank you!!! He gave the game such an unfair shake. It has a big following to it still…!!!!!
9:53 "Is that like a turnip with TEETH?"
And legs. I love it.

Ghoul dabs
"Oh come on..."
xD
Game: "Life is never fair"
Also game after a few seconds: *crushes player to death with a frickin pillar*
I guess life is no longer unfair, when you're already dead.
That would only mean Deaths fair, but life is not.
I think you meant "Life is no longer"
@@MidasButSilver Well I mean it does treat everyone the same
"So this game is definitely more of a DMC type of game"
Me: Nier automata
Your reviews are always on point and the effort you're putting into the games (even when they're abysmal) is remarkable. My utmost respect, keep it up
"She tripped! I'm not mad."
I dunno man. "I'm not mad" is what a mad person would say.
That has to be the smoothest advertisement i've seen in a while. I don't need them, but I will get a pair for you, just for that.
10:37 They should have totally given Torrent a stress meter in Elden Ring.
"This game just throws a fuckload of enemies at you. It just becomes a bit of a slog to get through these huge gauntlets of enemies. I just find myself to run past them..." Sounds like Dark Souls to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"Life is never fair, yeah." *SMASH!!* That made me laugh so bloody hard that they decided to do that.
That's definitely a "y'know, I should have seen that coming, and I only have myself to blame for that" moment.
best part of this video by far
there is a souls clone coming out called "Mortal Shell" looks pretty cool if im being honest
I played the games beta. It actually kinda sucks.
It seems pretty bad, tbh.
Don't listen to these jokers. It's VERY PROMISING and I enjoyed the beta immensely
Played the BETA and it was actually quite good, few janks but it is on a BETA so a very promising game coming in Q3
Its actually said to be more difficult than souls
Give Death's Gambit another go. The Afterlife update really turned the game around in like a No Man's Sky big kinda way.
I need more of these videos. I keep watching em over n over randomly.
Feed my addiction
Dark Devotion is a rogue-lite Souls-like game that, imo, succeeds where Death's Gambit fails. It has great pixel art (which DG also has), the combat is more precise, and the atmosphere is thick with death and despair, with a plot even more vague and aloof than the first Dark Souls
I'm glad someone brought this game up
Dark Devotion is a fantastic game, but honestly, the "souls-like" comparison end with stamina based combat, that's it, everything else is way different even to Death's Gambit and S&S. It has the Zelda/Binding of Isaac health system, the progression is only rogue-lite in a sense that you unlock passive traits and weapons. The entire premise of the game is you getting locked into a single route and going down it, there is no way to go back to the previous room/floor/etc it's just going down and keep going whiling deciding on your build along the way
Just recently finished it, great game but has a minimal souls element but overall has a great tone similar to souls atmosphere
For sure the souls element is minimal. But I feel that's the case in a lot of souls-like games these days. The main traits being a stamina bar, difficult combat, and foreboding atmosphere. Let's call it a "souls-lite" rogue-lite then.

the amount of patience you have is amazing and thank you for testing these games for us so we know which ones are worth our time.
Decay of Logos actually looks great in my opinion. If it had good controls and mechanics I'd play the shit out of it
Wait, did that Orc boss just kill himself by hitting his toes on a log? 10/10 emotionally relatable
"Orc Girl in a Sci-Fi City"
That doesn't look like Gobbet at all!
Honestly felt the ad for the earbuds at the end was the best part. That was hilarious! Loved it
I had an absolute blast playing deaths gambit. I enjoyed almost all the aspects of the game. And the music..its beyond good.
some other decent souls like, dark devotion, everpath, immortal planet, asura, shrouded in sanity, and animus harbinger (which was made the peeps im pretty sure made the first souls like on mobile, ire blood memory which i didn't mind if im honest)
@alex hernandez Every single title you mentioned sounds like a black metal band
@@toby4290 Thank you Dark Souls. For inspiring dozens of hackneyed rip off game titles.
I think he already reviewed Asura 🤔
Wasn't immortal planet featured in one of the previous videos?
The aesthetic on that second game looks amazing, hopefully they actually turn it into something worth playing
It feels like an eastern european folktale
Too bad it has weight gain fetish bait
@@soulreaver6546 what?
@@rosaparks6479 yea like wtf you cant drop that bombshell on people and not elaborate
@@williambradd1800 I assume they're talking about the fairy gaining weight to puke into that machine...which is definitely weird when you write it out like that, still I don't know if I'd call that "fetish bait" so much as a strange detail in an already strange game. Now if it revolves solely around that then forgive me for being ignorant but otherwise I think they're blowing that part out of proportion putting it that way.
i cant remember the last time i actually enjoyed a “commercial” lol your raycon bit at the end was hella funny 👍🏻🤘🏻
