If there's 1 thing I love about dark souls, it's the world. The amount of thought that goes into the level design and the lore behind locations are what make the experience for me.
I like to think its like running when it comes to the game's mechanics and fighting. Like an experienced Dark Souls player understands the core mechanics and can finish the game faster or die less from bosses and all, but those same players give themselves new challenges or PRs for the game. Dark Souls allows any player of any experience to create a challenge, but still complete it. A player with no experience even in RPGs let alone this style of RPG can still beat the game and even enjoy it. Like with running it sucks while doing it and you will get mad and want to give up, but you keep trying and when you finished it you are like "Hell yeah, I did it, now can I do it better?"
Yeah this is an incredibly bullshit thing that happens too often now, people keep mistaking commonly used functionality or even combinations of them to originate from the game just because it also features them (and generally well implemented). Bonfires are another example of things people too often seem to attribute as something unique even in base functionality (save/restart/restart and sometimes fast travel point that's need to be found and activated) - when it's more a matter of mechanical and contextual implementation that makes it stand out in From games. If games don't have features that define Souls-series why even call it a souls-like? At least Rogue-likes and Rogue-lites generally make sense, because it's very specific functionality. I love getting recommendations as much as the next person, but it could use a much stricter definition imo.
@@drunkenmuse I think it's really weird because people could re-invent the simpler mechanics without any awareness of what Dark Souls is. I'm fine with people compartmentalizing things for their own understanding, but I don't like it when people say something is a rip-off because it has a few similarities.
Not only did that third game use sounds from Dark souls, but i'm deadass certain the death sound of that girl you're escorting is, I kid everyone not, SERIOUSLY the sound Ashley makes when she's picked up in RE4.
To be fair you can literally interpret this as the game saying the enemy is too strong only due your lack of experience(with the game) or determination, thus you(the player) aren't ready.
"Orc girl" but catgirl but heavy rusted armour but scifi but samurai but tiny teenager body but... developers clearly had no idea of what they wanted. I am curious to see their original idea of "orc girl" before it became this mess of clashing ideas.
I mean... I love the idea of a cyberpunk Devil May Cry hack and slash thingy... But with a cooler design, and we have the Megaman Games and Metal Gesr Rising for that...
The Soulsborne series uses a lot of stock sound effects. Many of the ones used in Bloodborne such as opening doors, the new area noise, and visceral attacks are all used in one of the Jojo seasons.
Me and a friend actually made a document detailing all the dark souls sound effects we could find in various anime. I tried to document all the ones in Jojo, but they quickly grew to frequent to bother noting down.
Notably the same DS3 scythe R1 sound effect was used in Stardust Crusaders. a lot when stuff was being cut. I couldn't help but notice it because I hated that awful sound. I know the Part 3 anime came first but I watched it right after I replayed DS3 so that's why I noticed haha
That stupid stock pot sound effect used in every piece of media in the world. I can name 5 games off the top of my head, yet there is so much more that I believe it's impossible to name them all. ua-cam.com/video/An1knjltzu4/v-deo.html here is the sound.
@@NecromancyForKids no shit. He also has same description as justin y But btw get this guy a freedom some people hates someone being too common or known
16:00 "This is a third person action game where you play as an orc girl in a sci-fi city" but the main character is a catgirl? My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Good vid tho, you have the patience of a saint to go through some of these haha
Pretty sure it is a mistranslation and the original word was probably something like "demon", which changed to something like the japanese word "oni", which could then be mistranslated to orc.
Most people have such a loose interpretation of souls like it's rediculous. So it doesn't surprise me that Crash bandicoot is somehow considered Souls Like despite predating it and working on different mechanics and systems. It's just like the one game. He opens up saying it's like Diablo and Ico and yet somehow claims it to be like dark souls later without actually showing anything particularly dark souls to it that isn't part of either of those other games. yet somehow it's a Soul's Like.
@@Quandry1 It's like porn, I can't exactly describe what a souls-like is, but I know it when I see it. That said, I would not call any Crash Bandicoot game I have seen a souls-like, so unless the new one is doing something I don't know about that sounds a little crazy. As for that one game. Most of the time it's users who tag games "souls-like", although some games talk about it in their advertising. If users call it that, they must see something. I dunno, I was not really paying attention during that bit, the game looked dull. There was dodge rolls and melee combat in a dark maze-like level though right? Depending on the combat, that is all it takes, throw in bonfires and you got a souls-like as far as most people think. That doesn't mean it's good.
@@no_nameyouknow People throw that onto their games as advertising to suck people in and get them buying. Often whether it's true or not. Soul's like has some certain characteristics or you might as well throw the whole term out (which I'm not entirely against) for Retro gaming to begin with. Partly because a lot of what the Soul's games do is retro to the point that to some of the older games things like Dark Souls Difficulty is not all that standout. neither is some of the clipping that some of the mobs do that was incidental in some older games but actually is intentional in some of the souls games purely to artificially ramp up difficulty and unpredictability. Nor is the respawning of enemies because some of those older games are actually worse about enemy respawns than a souls game is due to hardware limitations of the time. What makes a soul's Game a souls game. Is a Combination of a classic 3D action adventure style, Mixed with a bit of a varied combat/gear based system and most importantly a somewhat rogue-like "death is not the end" way of handling player death combined with a somewhat unique leveling system that influence each other to a fair extent based on the points spent. The problem is that more and more of the games that people call souls likes have little to none of these. It's a combination of these details that is important. Simply Being a 3d action style game with combat isn't enough. That existed way before the souls games and is not enough to narrow something down to souls like. The Atmosphere of the games often isn't even enough because without the story context to them the environments of Most Souls games are fairly generic. So you need to have a lot of the elements and more importantly some or prefferably most/all of the more unique mechanics systems in place to make it a souls like. true Souls-like games do not have to drastically mirror each other in appearance and feel in truth. Games like BloodBorne and Nioh which take a lot of the same concepts and leveling system and often the "death isn't the end" approach to your characters proves this quite well. This is true of some other "genre's" as well. If something is a metroid-vania. It has certain characteristics, mechanics, and play styles. Same with Rogue-likes. There are things that are distinct about them and there is not necessarily a lot of room for overlap. Even when there is some overlap there is often some key differences to the way they function to why they aren't the same. As is the case of some Rogue-likes and some Souls-like games. The key difference to whether one is the first or the second is in how they handle their specific "death is not the end" mechanic inherent to those kinds of games in the areas that they do overlap.
You might like DarkMaus, it's a top down "soulslike" where you play as a rat who can wield a sword/spear/Pyromancy etc, it also has a rather bleak artstyle being mainly shadowed gradients.

Bro, as a developer, your feedback really seems to help them! It’s pretty all around on what’s they game should work to became better... that’s awesome
Too bad it fails in so many respects. Because it looks nice for sure and there was definitely room for a gun-centric Dark Souls. The problem really seems to be that while Remnant did the same idea it actually CHANGED things to work with guns whereas a lot of this is basically "Here's Dark Souls but you have to beat every enemy with a time-consuming sorcery!". You can't just throw guns into Dark Souls with the mechanics completely unchanged and it work.
Thanks for introducing me to Arboria, been playing a lot of it and love it to death. It's a tad jank but in a way I like and the whole aesthetic and artstyle is so disgusting yet charming. Something to note; by the time I played it the game was a lot more fully featured. More enemies and weapons and such, and the story is really intriguing to me.
Dark Devotion is a rogue-lite Souls-like game that, imo, succeeds where Death's Gambit fails. It has great pixel art (which DG also has), the combat is more precise, and the atmosphere is thick with death and despair, with a plot even more vague and aloof than the first Dark Souls
Dark Devotion is a fantastic game, but honestly, the "souls-like" comparison end with stamina based combat, that's it, everything else is way different even to Death's Gambit and S&S. It has the Zelda/Binding of Isaac health system, the progression is only rogue-lite in a sense that you unlock passive traits and weapons. The entire premise of the game is you getting locked into a single route and going down it, there is no way to go back to the previous room/floor/etc it's just going down and keep going whiling deciding on your build along the way
For sure the souls element is minimal. But I feel that's the case in a lot of souls-like games these days. The main traits being a stamina bar, difficult combat, and foreboding atmosphere. Let's call it a "souls-lite" rogue-lite then.

Game: "Life is never fair" Also game after a few seconds: *crushes player to death with a frickin pillar* I guess life is no longer unfair, when you're already dead.
If you get covered in oil it significantly increases fire damage and basically guarantees that the next fire damage hit you take will cause "Burn" which drains health quickly but also destroys paper items and any ice fruit (it's a long story) in your inventory. I *promise* this is an awesome game.
Once again, Im suggesting you could review Cathedral. Its a 2d souls like, kind of like a Medieval Hollow Knight, that no one knows about. You could check it out on Steam.
"Imagine if in Dark Souls you had to take naps" Yeah it's called Outward and it's annoying. Also "orc girl". Okay cool so muscular, tusks, green ski- "CAT GIRL." Oh uh... okay. Generic it is.
I quite enjoyed playing outward coop with a friend. Some of the mechanics were a bit tedious but I kind of appreciated some of the mechanics like sleeping and encumbrance.
What I love about Iron is that he doesn't take the piss on anyone, he provides actual good advice about all games he plays in a manner which is better than 99% of so called professional reviewers. I think he would be excellent to hire as a before release qa.
I've got one for you, The game is called Night of Revenge it's a japanese game in alpha and it's like someone took the scenery of Salt and Sanctuary and the monsters of Bloodbourne and threw it into one game, but with a twist.
For people not in the know , the twist is that it's a friggin Hentai game , I mean the game itself is surprisingly really good ( not like I played it myself *cough cough*), and you can tell just by playing that the whole thing is one massive passion project , but just be aware of what it is
15:29 death's gambit :,( i remember waiting years for that game, and was so promising, but they cut a lot of content from the trailer, and there is still a lot of bugs (but you can still enjoy the game, because have a good story, voices, music and art style, and a couple of secrets but most of them unfinished xD)
I'm really astonished by the comments about death's gambit. For me it was a far better experience than Salt&Sanctuary, the fighting had more variety, the art style is much more beautiful imo. I don't really get why people dislike it so much.
Speaking about having to take a nap now and again in games, I always found that kind of neat. Having to eat and sleep adds to immersion, but one thing I haven't seen in grand rpgs like these is the need to use the restroom. Imagine trying to fighting to death when you really need to crap. Sure, crap your pants, it's life or death who cares. Now after you win you have a charisma debuff because you smell like crap and npcs like you less. So much immersion!
I personally had a lot of fun playing around with Death's Gambit, and it had some neat hidden stuff to it, like heroic refights that gave special rewards. Was definitely a challenging game even if it wasn't amazing I guess. Blasphemous and Salt & Sanctuary were definitely better.
you should give death's gambit another try, they released a pretty big (free) expansion/update for it that basically overhauled the game in response to criticism. they updated the combat, changed game mechanics, added more metroidvania elements, updated the world and level design to accommodate for the new metroidvania elements, etc, along with adding more content. I didn't play the original so I can't say how much it was improved, but I've seen people online say it was improved a lot, and I'm personally really loving it, having not played the original version. what I can say is that the world is definitely more interconnected now than what you described.
11:56 "Imagine in Dark Souls if your characters had to like, take a nap every once in a while, or you'd do like, half damage." Literally durability, except that costs souls to fix.
11:50 "imagine if in dark souls your character had to take a nap" what if in dark souls 2 when you died, you progressively lost health until you needed to nap... wait, sorry, rekindle. >_>
I hope you're prepared for the Demon's Souls remake then, 'cause in that one when you die, it's not progressive. You just lose half your health, and the items to regain it are much rarer.

Have you tried death's gambit since the update? The afterlife update completely overhauled the combat and other mechanics. Plus a way better story ending if you do some extra steps. I didn't really like death's gambit originally, but the update is A++ (at least for me).
I still love how when at the beginning, he says he is not covering main stream "soul like games," that Crash Bandicoot is displayed so sly in the back.

I like to think its like running when it comes to the game's mechanics and fighting. Like an experienced Dark Souls player understands the core mechanics and can finish the game faster or die less from bosses and all, but those same players give themselves new challenges or PRs for the game. Stamina meter: **exists**
Everyone: OMG, THIS IS LIKE DARK SOULS!
I know the Part 3 anime came first but I watched it right after I replayed DS3 so that's why I noticed haha

i always find crash bandicoot put in the "souls like" category hilarious.
have you not played the original? It's a bitch! Makes senses why it's a souls like. XD
@@Quandry1
Super Mario Bros 2 JP a Soulslike?

So glad to see Immortal Unchained included. Reminds me how much I love Remnant: From the Ashes as a gun-play Souls-like.

I'm glad someone brought this game up
Dark Devotion is a fantastic game, but honestly, the "souls-like" comparison end with stamina based combat, that's it, everything else is way different even to Death's Gambit and S&S. It has the Zelda/Binding of Isaac health system, the progression is only rogue-lite in a sense that you unlock passive traits and weapons. The entire premise of the game is you getting locked into a single route and going down it, there is no way to go back to the previous room/floor/etc it's just going down and keep going whiling deciding on your build along the way
Just recently finished it, great game but has a minimal souls element but overall has a great tone similar to souls atmosphere
For sure the souls element is minimal. But I feel that's the case in a lot of souls-like games these days. The main traits being a stamina bar, difficult combat, and foreboding atmosphere. Let's call it a "souls-lite" rogue-lite then.
