The map design in this is supposed to be like this, because the goal of this mod is to be as accurate as possible, and that includes the bad parts that were cut from the final game.
6:33 retrofuturism is just whatever a specific era thought about sci-fi And yeah it’s essentially 90s retrofuturism, just when tryna not stray to far into the future.
I had an interest in this mod at one point but when it got discontinued I was like...OK. But finally the True Beta Half-Life is back, I hyped to play through it.
the issue with things like "room layouts" and "this room looks barren" is, how much is one willing to deviate from the source material and still call it faithful? i think the team is trying very hard to recreate what little information on what rooms were like in what part of the game with pretty high accuracy. one can be snippy and say "yeah this room looks unfinished" yeah no shit its a beta. long story short: i think the team is trying something very hard and i think even when the result may not wow one, they still deserve a mighty big hug for it.
I’ve had the opportunity to talk to one of the developers in the signal lost devs discord and the next major update after this is going to be from Blast Pit to the Alien Research Lab minus On A Rail which their saving for the end. Xen is also not going to be included apparently but there will be 2 more chapters after X-Lab/Lambda Core
This is the definitive Alpha / Beta mod for sure. I think it's worth getting further community support too, as the game is incomplete. There is Blast Pit left to fill the pieces in. Parts of the Alpha I feel can still be improvised somewhere. The player can choose to continue the game (playing through retail maps after Blast Pit until Forget About Freeman) or skip straight to "You're on your own!" chapter, because as I tried playing retail maps, it does work quite well.
Really interesting about the keycards. I remember when i first played Half-life, i did find it odd that there was no keyboard, coming from Doom and Duke 3D. I honestly think that keycards and some backtracking with a bigger facility would have been interesting, since you spend a bit more time in each location. And having keys doesn't mean that you cannot add ways to get around those doors.
i think what some people dont realise is how much valve employees were working in non stop in half life, from what a guy said in that half life documentary they developed the mouth system in a day or 2 just to show it worked. (something like that I'm not interested in rewatching the doc to a comment)
I think you'r on point about some of the maps being confusing, i also think that some of them are a bit too abstract with not enough level art to really set apart each area from each other. The boxes/sewer chapter is easily the worst one in this regard
If they are going to read the archer make it so it spits super pressurised water And the flocking floater should be neutral These are the only 2 things i ask if they get added
the keycard hud was present once back in team fortress classic (hl1 mod version) on a certain map (idk the map name because of age but please tell me what map was it) i hope the mod devs will implement the same hud
@@oldundead i have seen screws that big in the 4 Maria Doria levels in rusty metal walls but I'll need to double check Offshore Rig & Diving Area to see if they have intact ones. Maybe on the rim of the grating textures.
I wish the people who make these alpha, beta and cut content recreation mods realize that some elements were cut for a reason. Not saying this is bad or anything, but the level design might not always work because it tries to be like the original design. One example is Half-Life 2 Beta's starting section. In the retail, it's just trainstation, apartment building, running on roof and escaping from cops, Kleiner's Lab, teleportation sequence and entering the canals. In the beta, it's a lot longer, with industrial areas, construction sites, sewers and Manhack Arcade. All this without the HEV Suit or even any weapons. The pacing doesn't work, and that's why Dark Interval for example adds some gameplay by adding weapons even before getting the HEV Suit. Absolute Zero isn't an "absolute zero" though. Far from it. It looks very good. I should try it.
Depends the intention of the mod. Alpha inspired mods should certainly take some creative liberties to improve the gameplay but Absolute Zero is attempting to be as accurate as possible and is doing so brilliantly.
Honestly the complex maps should stay, i like maps that make you use your brain instead of being too easy. Also that's a lot more accurate to the alpha/beta.
Finally some good HL modding news. I hope they dont abandon it the second time. Also the BEST is a vague deffinition - Ocarina, BG1, Fallout2, RE2, MGS1, Starcraft 1 all came out the same year. The BEST FPS of that year - yeah probably - the best game overall? Hardly.
Hey, i tried the new version in steam, at first it was everything all right until i started a new game because i messed up bad and then whenever i loaded a saved game the game would freeze after certain inverval of time. Anyone got a solution?.
Once they release this mod, they should make “Absolute One” for Half-Life 2!
Dont you think it'd be too much for them?
certified dark and g̶r̶i̶t̶t̶y̶ griddy
@@bolthesnaphakker I’m joking of course, they don’t need to make a sequel for this mod lol
can't wait for "Absolute Two" for Half Life 3

I'd say the alpha has an almost comic book look to it rather than retrofuturist, the architecture in places feels very stylized

cant believe the nil value of zero is absolute. completely mindblowing.
Going to keep an eye on this.
It's HL1, but still like experiencing it for the first time.
Now i can complete my half-life beta collection.
21 likes that's incredible

Yay! When I first watched this, the NPCs always looked like messed up stuffed scarecrows, don't know why 🙃
It's the beta of half life 1 that's why
Loved playing this mod when it originally came out. So glad it is back!
See yourself back in anytime RAD
The levels in this mod look so dream-like
that one scientist in the test chamber talks if you take too long to put the crystal in
Absolute Zero is a bit confusing to play and to navigate around but it captures the notion of the alpha build of the game.
We’re back in beta Bois!!
Another resonance for cascade
everyday i was hoping for this mod to reach its " rebirth " and here we go..couldn't be more happy

How u continue the retail maps? I tried to find another way but i can't :(
One of the most important mods when it comes to the recreation of Half-Life Alpha, I hope the final release will be really awesome!

I played a tiny bit of this mod a few days ago and man I’m so excited!!
Honestly really happy for them , they did some great work it would've been a shame if they let the mod die.
I think that ladder comes directly from Quake 1.
WE ARE SO BACK!!!
I remember playing this a long while ago and was sad at the cancellation so this is hype!!!
There's Absolute Zero, but where's Absolute One, Absolute One: Episode Zero, Absolute One: Episode One, and Absolute Zero: Vance
Just remember while you were thinking "this isnt fun/fluid" thats exactly why it was probably cut :V
Why do they call it Absolute Zero?
Because when you see it, you'll turn absolute zero degrees and walk away.
i think what some people dont realise is how much valve employees were working in non stop in half life, from what a guy said in that half life documentary they developed the mouth system in a day or 2 just to show it worked. (something like that I'm not interested in rewatching the doc to a comment)
There's better examples than the mouth one but I agree.
i hope this some how connects to dark interval or another hl2 beta mod
i regularly go to one of the devs house, its a good friend of mine. everytime i went there, he was working on absolute zero
Man, that pre-release Barney used in the mod looks way better than the retail one.
I cant wait to see how the nihilanth and xen will look like in this

Forget about the original! We are cutting our saves, and playing this!
With leaked alpha animations and models they suffer more
Black Mesa looks like it has something to do with water with all those white walls with screws. Reminds me of a phase in Tomb Raider 2.
The oil rig levels or the Maria Doria?

It's one thing to have HL2 beta mods, but a HL1 alpha mod is probably one of the more unique mods out there
