- Here is a preview of my Online Painting Lessons. You can visit www.timgagnon.com for more information and to sign up. Please email me at tim@timgagnon.com if you have any questions.
This preview shows a short demonstration on simple puffy clouds. The technique is to just use an opaque white paint and allow the background to show through in some areas to create shadows. A simple technique that can be mastered after a little practice.
Thanks for watching!
Wow Tim, this is great. I am just overwhelmed with your generosity and teachers heart. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us beginners.
I have a feeling this isnt as easy as he makes it look....
It's exactly as easy as it looks.
For him anyway.
This tutorial is now 11 years old but I think the best one I’ve seen 👍🏼 thank you!
Great tutorail, thank you. I'm getting back into painting after many years and this has really helped me remember some of the technique used for clouds. Thank you!! Please keep them coming... God Bless!!
This is the best cloud lesson I've seen so far. You really made it seem so simple. I'm going to try it while I play the video again to see if I can get my clouds to at least be a simulation of yours!.
40 seconds in and it's a better cloud than I can paint in an hour -_-
Thank you very much. I love your tutorials... I love art and I'm taking my skills to the next level after your vids. You are simply amazing...
Wow man, that blue is perfect. PERFECT.
THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL ABOUT CLOUDS, I HAVE EVER SEEN, THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH
Excellent instruction, technique. Really appreciate the time you devote
I'm fairly new to painting, struggling to get realistic looking clouds. Yours are the best I've seen, as far as realistic looking, thanks!
this video was WAY more helpful then my actual art teacher. thanks
i was right in the middle of a painting when i got stuck! this video was just the thing i needed to finish my scene, thanx!!!!!!
Thanks! I wasn't so sure on the painting of clouds. I'm a drawer, if you know what I mean.. I specialise in pencil drawings and now I'm trying out acrylic in different ways and this really, really has helped me! :)
wow something that looks so good is just so simple to paint.
Thank you for this lesson. It was very helpful. I can't get out to art lessons so these videos are very much welcomed.
I love all of your videos! They are such a great help!
I am working on improving my clouds and this tutorial has immediately helped!!...Thank you for your time...Jane
I love your clouds! Thank you for this fabulous video!
Tim it would be nice if you replied to some of the comments sent to you, I would be very much interested to the question from Christopher Gilbert - what brush?, wet etc.. looking forward to your reply
tim why didn’t you reply to mariette?
Tim please reply to this
@@sinekae222 Yes, this is very frustrating. He also mentions using "Liquid White" in the video, so I'm wondering if it'a actually an oil painting lesson that is mislabeled, or if he's using a fluid acrylic of some kind. But I've never been able to achieve this effect, and the technique is very straight forward, so I'm convinced there is more to it, and he's leaving those critical points out of the video.
And as far as this artist not answering everyone's questions....maybe he's too busy making artwork to be on youtube every five minutes. If that's the case,I applaud him!
+Lenee He sells online lessons or DVDs. Be thankful he gave free tip lesson. : )
I really really love this Tim thanks a lot for you videos
this video was helpful compared to others on youtube on this subject. Thanks.
This is brilliant! I just haven’t been able to paint clouds. Please could you tell me what brush you used? Thank you 😊 Sharon x
Thanks for explaining so well.I learned a lot from your painting .
Brilliant explanation; now I'm off to try this. Thank you.
Beautiful.!! Very Well Done!!!
can you show which type of brush you used , I think many time the type of brush is also important.
That's exactly what I'd like to know!
a harder and shorter one, i presume
Thanks!
on another video about painting clouds the guy said to use a filbert brush. He's the guy with a very southern accent, his brush was a bit bent because he said he didn't take care of it. He also used different brushes, like a 2 inch brush and just used the edge of the brush, Bob Ross uses the same size brush and also paints clouds that way, too.
a filbert brush would be good to use, also i bought a 1/4 inch brush recently that is rounded but expensive but great for painting clouds, i think try using different brushes like a fan brush, too. Remember these vids are ok for tips but afterwards everyone will find what works best for them, it's trial and error no matter what these people on these vids recommend.
I just rated as 5. I love it!
u have a pretty hand! hehee....but seriously...thanks for posting. it's exactly what i need. i'm very much an amateur painter and always have problems with clouds and they end up looking like off-white blobs.
amazing that you've managed to hold top comment for a year!
I've painted for 10 years, and in this 10 years, I always have trouble with clouds. Really appreciate this!
i'm also new... these can be easily found if you goto a book shop, or something like that.. the price did not matter really, just your likes, the more expensive ones holds longer and are more smooth(in my opinion..)
O.o
That cloud is bad ass!!
I was watching and was like, "Awesome!!"
But then you kept going and going an woahI!!! I LOVE it!
Thanks for your videos, these are great!
sir, i just to ask, should i add a little amount of water to my acrylic paint? thanks... i like the way you paint the clouds :) thanks for this video..
so awesome!!
HI, Can you verify what you mean by liquid white? I cant find it here in the UK, and I'm wondering if it is something like Gesso... Thanks for all the vids, great help...
Thank you for improving your sound!
EXCELLENT tutorial!!!!
thank you for sharing this!!!
The best clouds tutorial I've seen so far. Thank you.
wow...amazing!
What kind of liquid white do you use here? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question but I see a lot of different ones at the stores and don't know what each is for. Also, do you have to use liquid white for these clouds? Titanium white wouldn't work?
I really like your clouds. I plan on signing up for your class. I'm new to acrylics and am wondering what brush you're using, a bristle type? And do you have extender in your paint?
In art I’m doing a nice ocean scene with some clouds, I’m thinking about adding a shark fin, but idk. This video helped me. Thank you!
So did you add shark fins?
So many people asking what brush the up loader is using takes me back to when I was learning photography (over 35 years ago eek!!) and everyone needed to know what aperture and shutter speed the photographer used to take a picture. Now that I am getting into painting its the brush size and is the paint wet. History repeating itself!! Maybe I'll stop painting because I don't know what brush is being used or watch loads more youtube videos....or maybe I'll take a general pointer from this video and go and try different brushes and wet and dry backgrounds and discover for myself - that sounds fun. Which takes me back to my photography where I actually only improved when I got out there and started taking lots of pictures and then I didn't even care what aperture/shutter speed another photographer used...most of the time I could pretty much guess correctly by the look of the photograph.
Thanks that was amazing
Beautiful!!!!!!! Thank u!!!!!
Me after first initial white layer: Wow! Amazing it looks like a cloud!Oh wait there more....
After second layer of white: Wow! Ever more like a cloud! Oh man...more?
Final layer: This guys is a genius! Its a cloud!!! O_O
I love this video, it is both inspiring and educational and if I can one day paint as beautifully as this then I will be fulfilled beyond words, thank you for a beautiful cloud!
Oh great.I know after this lesson that I wait for my paint to dry a little.e,and use less paint on my small brush.I can paint nice fluffy clouds now.thank you .
Thank you very much for this clearly explained technique, I thought it would be near impossible to paint clouds!
I might have a go... : )
Thank you always find it hard to do clods until now
@KilleroyCZ try to wait till blue color is completely dry :) and start to draw clouds
i have trouble with clouds. this was pretty helpful.
This is an excellent tutorial! Thank you for sharing your talent. Gifted artist and teacher!
Beautiful, but what kind of brush are you using. The brush is so important. This technique cannot be done with any brush.
Now I know how to make the edges fluffy
GREAT VIDEO!
What brush did you use? Great tutorial!
What brush is used? A round brush? And why do you use liquid White instead of titanium white?
Ok everyone, it turns out I had bought a cloud painting tutorial from Tim like five years ago, and forgot about it. I'm re-watching it now. It's not this exact video, but it's similar. So here's the deal: he uses hog bristle brushes, usually filberts or rounds, and he does use a mister bottle to keep the paint a little more workable, with four or five drops of a slow-dry medium in the water bottle.
Very nice and I think it needs a lot of patience.
@Lisssy182 as u can see, it looks like he is a using a short, and round tipped brush.
I like the way the cloud was without adding all that white, but still very nice and thank you for taking the time to teach us. Good work!
I like it
Tim brother I use too pain till I was 15 , 16 years of age and I quit because I got busy with life ,now I m 41 I just saw couple of your videos. And inspired me to paint back again. I thank you from heart. I learn so much from your videos. Keep up the good work buddy. Lots of blessings.
Totally amazing!
It seems so easy. I'm going to try my first painting. I wonder what the result is gonna be. So far I only did pencil drawing :)
@mondocaneman I think it has to be round to get the clouds looking fluffy!
THANK GOD !!! A painter that is simple, direct and walks you through it in such a manner that is totally understandble! After watching so many other tutorials on acrylics and especially "clouds" ... I got it with this guy! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are a jewel !
Thanks for sharing. It is really great! Good presentation and lesson for starters as well for those who struggle painting clouds.
Gagnon. This is the best cloud tutorial I've ever seen $1,000,000 thanks.
Hi Tim..thanks for the tip. I may actually get a decent cloud out of this. Does the same technique work with oils? Thanks again...Michael.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Did you do the clouds on dry sky and the is it just white paint or mixed with something?
thank you- very important for me
I just painted my first cloud. It is far from where your cloud is but I am happy that I had the courage to start in the first place.
I enjoy the way you teach, perfect for the beginner. I also would like to know your brush size? Thank you.
Shavauna Ronan it is probably 6 no. but it depends from brand to brands
Great video ! very helpful ! Does this technique works also with oil colors ? Thanks :)
While I'm not intending to work with actual paint, this did wonders for my technique in Corel Painter. Thank you for the tutorial!
can you use any white tube of acrylic to do this? I thought I heard you say you were using a LIQUID WHITE.
Thank you
@sepohnekorb If i may answer that, you shouldnt. You want your acrylic paint as dry as possible (which the reason why he uses very less paint and spreads the ammount he has). You want the pigment white only, and you spread it only to make up for the extra water the pigment has in paint.
umm, it really depends on the size and quality. u could buy cheap and low quality ones at the dollar store, or packs of them for crafts. but really, if u use them well, and only buy the ones u need, like a large, medium, and small brushes, instead of buying every single individual brush, it might just cost about 10 dollars. an thats not bad if u get a really good quality one made with horse hair.its kind of like buying a leather wallet intead of paper.
What I dont understand in this demonstration how come at the beginning when I do the circle and than continue with is brush and that the circle still white even if he goes in the circle whis is brush where is very white ... the white doesnt change,. Hope you undersand what I mean I am french ...I tried it but didnt work. Anyway
awsome
@Donu7M4st3r Those 12 people that are now 20 are jelous, you find that big time in the art world: but the thing is they are not able to take a good lesson along with critisim to become the best that they could have been or could be. That is how you learn. take care Muki
I am a beginning painter. Tim's technique he shows here has let me paint the most satisfying clouds since I've started. I have searched the web, books and everything I could think of. But this lesson here has been the best for me. Thank you Tim so much for this. I'm really enjoying clouds now. I took up painting for stress relief. Now painting has given me some stress! But this has taken a lot of the stress out of it. What really nice clouds you can paint with this.
Actually - the "liquid white" Tim is referring to is Apple Barrel White acyrlic paint. I have purchased his lessons and this is the liquid white he recommends. If you google "Apple Barrel white paint" you will see the type I am referring to.
@wcbombers21 Its nothing more then a white base coat with a stretcher. mix somne white with some water and washing up liquid till its thick milk looking and u will have the same..
Iv'e called every art store here in Los Angeles for 'liquid white'. and nobody seems to carry or even know what that is!!! So are you just taking a piss mate??
what is 'liquid white'. and who makes it?
This was the best video on how to paint clouds that I came across !👍🏾🎨❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 You are a super teacher !😃👍🏾
Thank you so much, I'm glad I could help. Thanks for your comment!
I love this videos, it's the best, realistic cloud video out there. I'm new to acrylic painting and trying to work on a stormy sunset beach scene with clouds. I'm assuming you are using acrylic paints and I am using Golden acrylics. What happens with me is, if I try to put as much paint as you have and smush it around, it's just a big blob. If I try to use smaller amounts of paint, it dries so fast that I can't soften the edges to make them whispy. If I add a little water to the brush, it's just a wet mess now and becomes translucent. Every time I try to whisp out the sides (with a dry brush) the paint doesn't whisp (I'm lightening up the pressure too) but the paint doesn't become translucent like yours, just more paint not whispy paint. Are you adding anything to paint to make it loosen it up for the edges and are you using a round, soft or hard brush? I still make pretty good clouds now after this, just need a little clarification because my paint dries the minute I start the cloud so I can't whisp out the edges especially for as long as you can go. Thanks!
Hi, I'm not sure what this man's particular technique is but I have a suggestion that I think will help if you still need it - mix some water in your white paint until you get a consistency similar to a medium to thin salad dressing. Grab your brush (the one in the video looks like soft-ish bristles and dome-shaped, like round at the base instead of flat - I feel like it helps with the cloud form) and use it either dry or barely damp - you might have to experiment to see what works best. Make sure you're working on a completely dry canvas so no tacky background paint "catches" the white, then use the technique in the video. Happy painting!
@stuart8965756799 maybe you can buy drawing books :) but dont try to add oil on piece of paper.. lol.. (painting is basically use oil paint or acrylic)
@wcbombers21
Hmm maybe he means the white paint in a bottle which is more liquid-ish than the white you find in the acrylic tubes :-)
Amazing Cloud !!!..I need to try harder
what exactly is 'liquid white'. when I try this with acrylic paint, it dries too quickly to blend as you do. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Tim, thank you for this, can I ask is the background dry before paint the cloud?
This is a wonderful video. However, I can’t make out what kind of brush you are using.
Could you comment on the color and technique you used to paint the base of the canvas prior to the clouds?
@PrisonerInMyOwnHell you'll get there :) practice practice practice!
