Hello, I have only just discovered you, wow, I am blown away by your 'Forgotten Road no 1 underpainting, acrylic pen teqniqe and rubbing off highlights. I adore the sepia painting as it is, very much too, like an old photo. Your clouds are more impressive and magnificent than real one, so fluffy and round with so many shadow colours, and formations in the distance flowing into nearer clouds. I cannot believe you haven't thousands and thousands of subscribers and viewers, they are missing the most amazing master classes. Thank you so much for your generosity for sharing invaluable master lessons. Your cat is adorable. I am off to watch no 3 and all your magnificent videos. 😗🤗
Thank you so much Laura! I've just really started paying attention to UA-cam this year. (My big following is over on Instagram). More to come here on UA-cam, though!
Beautiful clouds and a very lovely Muse!
Thanks!
Layne: What an incredible artist. I paint in acrylic BUT am trying oils. I'm a retired toy designer, still trying to paint clouds that look "loose" and realistic....like yours. My paintings are usually of military aircraft and my attempts at clouds always fail.........I HAVE to watch your videos now for inspiration. Pity the artist who cannot "loosen up" like me. Clouds are NOT hard edged. I have to repeat this to myself.
Can you please consider posting the beginning steps like the brownish underpainting? Just curious what your technique is....
Thanks, Layne!
Thanks so much!
No problem! You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/IW0uZ-AY8vE/v-deo.html
I also have a playlist with a few other underpaintings that you might enjoy: ua-cam.com/play/PLYi0xqR3jTP6NA9tCHezaKP7__6UVt6wc.html
Fantastic. Perfect tutorial for my next painting in Tuscany! Very inspiring and didactic. Many thanks
That's awesome!
Oh also meant to say hello!! I am a brand new subscriber! The video that caught my attention was The Magic of an under painting and now I’m moving onto your other videos! 😊
👋 Awesome! Thank you!
Gracias gran maestro
You're very welcome!
I’m enjoying your videos.
I appreciate that!
Gracias maestro desde bogota Colombia
You're very welcome!
So beautiful Layne! Is this painting included in one of your lessons?
Thank you! No, not this particular painting. But you can see which paintings are included on this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLYi0xqR3jTP7gCRau5lbls6iHPsFq2srs.html
Thank you! 😊
I have paid good money for classes that don't hold a candle to your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise so generously with us.
Thank you very much! Really appreciate that.
What medium do you use?
I use Liquin throughout. 👍
@@LayneJohnsonStudio do you have to follow the fat over lean rule with Liquin? I have used it before, but I have gotten mixed responses to that question..
Is it me or did you skip from the sky to sky holes without showing the base value for the clouds in a cloud painting video?
A bit, but it's the basically the same value as the sky holes. Unfortunately I had a time limit for this video.
You can see more of the base value & color from another painting in this video: ua-cam.com/video/RtAP6CWa-Kc/v-deo.html
If you're looking for full step-by-step, check out my online courses. They go into much more detail. laynejohnson.com/classes
That was great. Thanks, Layne. I was surprised you didn't show the initial blocking in of the clouds (considering the title of the video) but I think I can work out what you did (apart from the lighter tones at the horizon). I wonder how this would be done in watercolour.
Thanks Peter. I think my videographer (aka wife) was gone at the time I was painting that part. :) You can see cloud block-in in this video: ua-cam.com/video/nRTaqakPdd8/v-deo.html
Newt approves. He has the loudest purrrrrrrr!
Doesn't he?! LOL
Awesome video- thank you! 🙌🙌
Thanks very much!
Layne, I just recently found your awesome channel. Your way of teaching is exactly my speed. I am now spending time catching up on all your videos. Love your detail and realism. Great inspiration. Thank you
That's awesome!
Oh my word! Your clouds are beautiful! Thank you for sharing your techniques. I’m looking forward to watching ALL your videos!
You're very welcome! Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much ,it is very interesting .💝😻
I have to say, at the moment when you started painting, I really appreciate the small detail of starting out in real time, and only after will you speed up the footage. Personally, it helped me ease into the timelapse.
Awesome!
I tried to get your classes but it didn't work. Hopefully you can get a user friendly way to sign up for your classes
Hi Kathleen - which class did you try to enroll in (layne-johnson-studio.teachable.com)? Or were you trying to register for the free workshop (laynejohnson.com/workshop)? We have thousands of students and typically it's very easy to enroll.
In either case, please email hello@laynejohnson.com and we'll be happy to help you out. Thanks!
‘how to paint clouds…’
First, get a brush with a Really long handle.
Lol! Yep, unless I'm painting small, I generally prefer long handled brushes.
I recently found your channel. You are an amazing artist. I can't wait to watch all of your videos! Your teaching style is excellent. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me! Looking forward to taking some of your classes I saw on your website!
Thank you so much!
the hue variety within the clouds is what gets me, its beautiful, smart and efficient considering the primer/rust wash
Thanks very much!
Awesome video- thank you! 🙌🙌
You're welcome!
I love your Muse. ❤ 🐈 You are a true painting maestro. Fantastic.
Thanks so much for sharing your art. 🎨🖼
I too am a realistic landscape painter my medium is chalk pastel, but have not painted anything for a few years.
I have gotten out the rental life and got my own place - busy settling up my studio now, to get back into it, after all this time.
Again thanks so much, I love your work.
That's awesome!
❤❤❤😮
A quick question for the shadow what colour you use thank you for the guide ❤😊
Typically I use LUKAS Cassel Earth and Ultramarine Blue (and a bit of white).
@@LayneJohnsonStudio thank you your painting is photorealistic
Hmmmm just super Layne. Love the assistant too. Is it a painters thing to have a feline companion in the studio. Its not just use tqo either. Most of my artist friends have cats too. Looking forward to seeing the next stages - Paul 😃😃😎😎
Thanks Paul!
Gathering inspiration. Nice work.
Lánye,,jonson
Interesting!
Are you using oils or acrylics?
Oils!
@@LayneJohnsonStudio awesome!! Thank you. Great work.
Noot!!!
😄
Been following your amazing artwork on Instagram and am so happy to have found your youtube channel. Thank you for making these videos!!
You're very welcome!
So happy I found your channel! I'm a portrait artist who has always ached to paint skies. Can't wait to try one based on your teaching. Also, my cat looks just like yours and is named Newt, if I heard correctly, which was my dad's name. I think it's a sign, lol. Can't wait to watch more! 🙂
Yes, Newt. That's amazing!
So awesome. Could you please list the colors you used for the clouds, including what type of white ... titanium?
Thanks! Yes, titanium white. Also, cadmium yellow deep, ultramarine blue, cassel earth, and transparent earth red and/or some earth color.
Sure did enjoy this. And you’re a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Thank you. Your clouds look wonderful.
You're very welcome!
You certainly have a gift.
Thank you! 🙏
Do you have your maulstick mounted to the ceiling?
Close! I have a "spar" across the top of my big easel that I can hook my big mahl sticks onto. You can see it in this video, about halfway through: ua-cam.com/video/ynAL5qb_UJQ/v-deo.html
@@LayneJohnsonStudio Very neat invention! I was thinking of something similar for some time. Now I know what to do. Cheers!
Beautiful clouds and cute cat
Thanks!
