Thank you, Scott!!
My PlatyBall Elite showed up today! Yippee!
It really does seem to be the right ballhead for me. It just took over two years from when I backed it. Well, it seems to be worth the wait. They got it right.
A top panning clamp doesn't work for precise panos. Yes, you can just set it level but your horizon is right smack in the middle of the frame for every pano. My RRS heads had a panning clamp on top that I replaced with a normal lever clamp after a few months. A "below-the-head" leveller is still the best solution.
Couple of potential issues:
1) All the locks and buttons seem to be a magnet for sand getting in?
2) The unlock and locking button style seems to be less precise than it should. Let's say the head is fully loosened and I have to press the top button like 5 times to lock it tightly. I am 100% sure my precise composition will be shifted just that tiny bit. Then I press the lower button to loosen it a little, compose again and press the top button a few more times to tighten it. Seems like a non-intuitive way of working at all.
3) It's huge.... just too big for any modern-day ballhead.
Then again, these are just my thoughts and it could jolly well work for you.
That level is cool. The Arca-Swiss Monoball p0 Ball Head uses the same inverted design and is much smaller and lighter with double the weight capacity.
So this is a P0 clone but not as good as a PO? With some fancy electronics?
@@PaulParkinson Don't forget that it's much cheaper, and that you can loosen and tighten with one hand. You'll still need to use 2 hands to loosen and tighten the P0. Nice thing about competition is the consumer has options. Not everyone needs to load 40+ pounds of gear on a ball head so I'm glad I won't have to pay for that feature.
I got my Elite yesterday!
We need the karabiner but Scott it has to come with one of your interesting tidbits like the beginning of a chapter in your books to really make feel like we are getting something worth while.
Thanks for your input, Scott, but to be more accurate about the pledge pricing, the $199 and $249 are for deliveries next March 2021 and a higher pledge is necessary for Dec delivery.
Does the pano mode work with the camera in vertical position? Basically, i love the idea of the pano option for panoramic shots, but i always do my panos with the camera in portrait position, although im panning from left to right to do horizontal panos.
Probably should have a padded carabiner so you are not scratching the heck out of your platyball.
Just don't understand why a company the size of Platypod needs to use Kickstarter. I'll gladly wait and pay the extra when commercially available.
I received mine a month ago. I returned. Too heavy and costly for what it offers. I got the BH-55 used ballhead.
So Scott, I am a panoramic photographer and was wondering how this amazing product revolves around the nodal point of the lens?
It doesn't. You'll need to use a longer plate so you can move it back and forth to find the nodal point.
Can't wait to get mine. And, yes! I vote for a nice red carabiner to with my sexy red Elite. ;)
You'll have to wait, until December at least, and probably longer as we don't know how long the Corona virus effects will last in delaying products made in China.
Scott, what is that tripod you are using?
you can find it in this link 3leggedthing.com
Scott... Seriously, you are using a nice ballhead and then just stabbing at the shutter release with your finger (2:13)? Where's the cable release? You know better than that, my friend! 🤣 But thanks for the review. I had ordered one and also saw this at WPPI. It's a very solid ballhead and I am looking forward to getting my unit to work with!
So....Are there any cons?! Lol
Kickstart for this company is ridiculous, plus it won’t even be available for 12 months...
In fairness to them, they have run successful kickstarters before. I can't vouch for them delivering on time but they have delivered several times in the past so I'd trust them to deliver now as well.
Why would it bother you that they used Kickstarter? Cheaper than financing it themselves, gets them free exposure, end user design input, and lets users get a good deal on new tech. Just don't see why anybody would have a problem with this financing approach.
