2017 Genesis G90 3.3T - Redline: Review

  • Hyundai looks to further move themselves higher up the luxury ladder with the introduction of an all-new full line luxury brand. With the 2017 G90, the replacement for the old Hyundai Equus looks to bring Genesis even closer to its German and Japanese rivals. With a standard twin-turbo V6 and available AWD, the new G90 should offer lots of value to traditional S-Class and 7-series buyers.

I have driven Mercedes and Audi A8L. I recently bought a 2018 G90 Ultimate V8 AWD with 23,000 miles for $43,000. Clean carfax, one owner with plenty of warranty left on it. This car is truly underrated. Its clean and super comfortable. Drives smooth and commands road presence. Cabin is sick! Sleek and relaxing. This is luxury at it's best! Dont think I will be going back to the Germans.

Vehicle is straight classy period, design is flawless, I would by this over a S-Class and a BMW 7 Series in a heartbeat reliability is a 10, once depreciation sets in like all cars it will make a better buy on the pre owned car market, the reliability will still be there while most S-Class and BMW 7 series and Some Audi becomes money pits out of warranty because most buyers can't afford the maintenance cost, only the car note.

I've had this car for six months. Formerly, I owned Lexus LS for the last ten years. I have nothing critical to say of Lexus. They make a fine car. But, the G90 is special in all the ways that people expect Lexus to be. I can't say enough good things about the G90. The things that have impressed me the most are acceleration, quietness, comfort and quality of the interior and ease of use for the entertainment and nav system. The sound system in the G90 is superb. It does lack a little oomph from the subwoofer, but the soundstage and precision/clarity of sound is unequalled by anything I've heard. It true, the Genesis badge doesn't have the cache of a Lexus or Mercedes. If you care about quality for the money over perception by the public, Genesis is building great cars.

What year is your LS? I recently traded my 13 LS460L for a 2020 RX. A lot of regret. Definitely want to go back to a full body sedan. The LS was superb car but miles was getting high. The new LS500 just won’t attract me at all. I’m leaning toward a slightly used g90. Seems like a great value. I drove the g80 many times it was ok I hope the g90 is more refined and

Thanks for your great video. One minor correction (and good news for some of us); the primary display actual has touch sensitivity but only on certain windows. For example, the QWERTY screen for entering a navigation destination is touch sensitive which is a real timesaver. The windows that allow for touch sensitivity should be evident by their green band around the data entry part of the window. Give it a try!

Look at 12:25, it's the button under the camera view button. Just wondering if the car actually does have self-parking capability?

I saw the Genesis G90 up close for the first time last week at a car show. It had a unique two- tone paint job [silver over black}. The car looked fantastic! Now, if it is as reliable as my Lexus has been, I would really want to own this car. My previous car was a 2003 Mercedes SL500. After several years of ownership, the car was breaking down almost every month and the repair bills were huge. Today, you can buy a low mileage 2017 G90 for $50-55k. Sounds like a very good deal to me.

Great car, always love your reviews. I agree it lacks a 'pizaz' but most people buying this car don't want that. Otherwise they'd be in an M5 or E63. They want dignified luxury, which this car provides.

I think the headlamps with bi-xenon bulbs looks stunning on the G-90 than old-fashioned like the first-gen Hyundai Genesis standard halogen headlamps. It's more of a self-conscious preference to want LED headlamps because, in 2004, Audi was the first-ever brand to use LED technology inside a forward headlamp, and LED headlamps aren't a spring chicken, either, as opposed to being dated in addition to xenons.

Kinda sad the best feature of this car is the audio system and gets a 10 second review, I drive all the top of line sedans from RR, Bentley etc, this had the BEST sounding sound system I've heard in any factory sedan

Sof, do you think they will come out with a GS type of car like Lexus did?

amill1563 The G80 competes with the Lexus GS, Audi A6, BMW 5 series, MB E-Class, and Volvo S90. So yes, they made a GS competitor.

Germans claim to be world class and all, but why is it that Hyundai has made a few world firsts, along with many engine awards
I haven't seen Benz or Audi on wards 10 best engines in a while
World first - first car to feature a cabin C02 sensor (Hyundai Genesis was the first to bring it out)
In Australia according to ANCAP it's the safest car ever recorded in 20 odd years
Hyundai's AEB is far more intuitive than those from other rivals
People are just badge snobs - But unfortunately Hyundai tech trumphs some of the competition
If the germans were so serious about world class tech - then why did it take Hyundai to introduce a crucial piece of safety tech we should have had around 10 years ago - Germans and Swedish are a bit behind the "safety" times i think
I'm yet to see Hyundai's break down here in Australia, it's usually everything else in between that does
Audi, VW, Toyota, Ford, Holden, Merc, etc
People just don't know HOW to maintain cars, so of course any car will break. Plenty of Hyundai excel's still running around with 4 - 500,000km on'em 😂
Yet most german cars end up in the scrap yard because they can't handle Australian climate

The 3.3T V6 is quieter and has way more torque at low engine speeds than the V8. IMO the V6 is better suited to the quietness and smoothness this vehicle exudes. You talk about it riding "like a boat" -- how does it compare to the Lexus LS500 in that regard? I drove an LS460 and it's not even in the same conversation as the G90. As others have probably already stated, it DOES have air suspension.

Why are you criticizing the turn signals switches, yes they are plastic, just Mercedes-Benz has in their S-Class as well. When was the last time you inside one? Even the S600 Maybach has them in plastic.

The German car enthusiasts are a breed onto there own. Talk to any mechanic that works on all brands and they will tell you to run away from German cars. What else does a person need to know to make a smart decision. Resale value is the only downside to the Genesis. The Japan made cars are resale Kings but the Genesis actually have better driving dynamics. If you drive your cars to over 100 k get a Genesis in my opinion.
