I wish I had the same experience with the Mafate 4, but then I am so used to the Speedgoat 3 and 4, nothing else compares. The Mafate does not have that "pop" as he describes and I quit using mine after about 4 weeks.
I was a massive fan of the SG3, one of my best trail shoes of all time! I still feel the Mafate Speed 4’s midsole is pretty good and I definitely get a good level of bounce when I’m running in them 👍
The Speedgoat 3 was a revelation to me. Best bounce and traction I'd ever experienced. Unfortunately I should have sized up because there wasn't enough room in the toe box. I've had some slightly mixed results with versions 4 and 5 but overall they've been the best trail shoes for me. All three are still going strong, which isn't something I can say for most other shoes. I'm looking forward to your long term review Lloyd!
Loved my 4s but never felt the passion for the 5s after the stiff collar rubbed repeatedly. Couldn’t wait for the 6s, so went for Nnormal Tomir 2.0. Interested to see your review further down the line. Keep up the great work. 👍🏼👏🏼
I’m just wearing out my third pair of Speedgoats (I call them Slowboats) and I love them. I’m pretty heavy so need the cushioning they provide….and the grip is fine. Yes they’re a bit of a narrow fit so I’ve upped a whole size to an 11. No issues with laces or tongues, although the upper crease has worn through on all my pairs….but on height mileage Spanish mountain trails so can’t complain. I’m going back for a fourth pair! 👍🍷. Thanks for the video Loyd.
To be honest I gave up after 4 runs and I haven’t run in them since! I really didn’t get on with them and I’ve got lots of other shoes to run in that feel much better 👍 Sorry I can’t answer your question but I hope this helps 🙂
I had the same reaction. It immediately felt much firmer and stiffer. Previous versions have been super springy and soft right out of the box. Hoping this version will soften up over time
@@hamoudalnasser Nope. I'm not a fan of this version of the Speedgoat. I think I have about 200 miles in them and never clicked with them and never felt like they softened up at all.
Vj shoes have the stickiest rubber compound. You should really try the new Vj maxx 2. It’s a great shoe. Probably the best trail shoes I’ve ever had. Half a size down is the recommendation.
Yeah, VJ is on another level. Made for orienteering runners. Where a straight line through mud and bushes tends to be the fastest way. They need the absolute best shoes. Hence VJ💪
Thanks for the review Loyd. I run in SG5 and they’ve been good for me. Might stick with them over the 6. Found the Mafate narrower than SG, you think this or was it just me ?
Great review as always and happy to see your recovery going well. I fully agree with your analysis of the shoe, it definitely feels firmer, but I find it to be a good thing to differentiate it more from the Mafate Speed 4 in the Hoka offering. Because I think these 2 shoes were very close to each other in the last iteration. The Speedgoat now sits in the middle of a highly cushioned Mafate and a super responsive TectonX. Man, seeing your t-shirt, it would have been so we'll matched with the blue-pink colorway Hoka sent me !
I've had 1 run in my new SG6's. I was hoping to have them be race-ready out of the box for this coming weekend's trail 1/2, but I'm with you. I feel like they may need to be broken in a little to get back to the comfort and feel that I've had in a past model of the SG. At least that is what I am hoping will happen.
Have to remember shoe reviews are personal and one individual opinion. I’ve been happy wi the 6 for over 100km so far and I’m a wide footed Topo and Altra fan. Trail tanks for sure. All the things required from a trail shoe are present. They plough through harsh conditions as is their M/O. No negatives from here.
I totally agree Howard and I pretty much say that in every shoe review I film, running shoe choice is very personal! What works for me might not work for you and vice versa. I actually worked in running retail for 10 years and help 1,000’s of customers with their running shoe choice. So the fact that you’ve been happy with the SG6 is great, but like you said it doesn’t mean it’s going to be right for everyone 👍
It sure is Paul! I personally think if you’ve never run in the SG before you’ll enjoy the 5’s. However is you had run in the SG3’s you might be disappointed 👍
@Run4Adventure I remember watching your video of the SG5 I think it was where you said that too! I haven't tried the 6 yet, girlfriend tried them on today, maybe I should've but we didn't have much time! She's just getting into running and trail running but struggling with what to go for, She's tried all sorts on now, even some brooks Catamount 3s today which she liked over most in runners need (exeter)
I loved my SG4's, wore them until they fell off my feet, then I loved the SG5's and again, ran in them until they fell off my feet. I now have the 6's and yep, they are noticeably stiffer but I do believe this had made them faster. And they are now light which is great. As Karl said himself "you can't please everyone"
I totally agree Mark, running shoes are so personal! However you weren’t spoilt by the brilliant Speedgoat 3. The shoe has never been the same since unfortunately 😕
@Run4Adventure I came into ultra too late didn't I 😅 SG4's were my first ever "trail shoe". tell you what, inov8 G280 trailflys have served me well recently
Just how stiff are they. Seems like they have no flex or trail feel at all. I take it your feet don't hurt after awhile. I also wonder whether the cold impacts the firmness.
@hamoudalnasser the cold will impact but once your half a mile up the road thw shoe will act as normal. They are firmer to begin with but mine now (150miles in) are fantastic. my only criticism is the tounge, it's way too short. A nice normal well padded tounge will make this shoe the true GOAT
I was looking at the speedgoat6 and the Salomon genesis. Both felt great but I chose the speedgoat due to the stability (the firm midsole). To this, I am a heavier runner and hence they work perfectly. Though I just did a XTERRA that was extremely muddy and they do not perform well I deep mud.
Thanks for the great review. It confirms what I have heard in other reviews. A shame, as I loved the SG5 a lot. What is the best alternative now? Trabuco Max 3, Caldera 7, Xodus Ultra 3? Any other good options for a comfy trail shoe. I want to add it to the Catamount 3 which is fast but not too comfy on the longer distances.
If you otherwise liked the SG's then the Mafate Speed 4 should fit the bill. I vastly prefer them over the SG5 (bouncier, more comfortable, batter upper).
I agree the Mafate Speed 4 is a lot more comfortable and the midsole feels like it’s returning more energy compared to the new Speedgoat 6 👍 Thanks for watching 🙂
@@hamoudalnasser No, unfortunately there is only a regular version. I wouldn't say they are super narrow in the forefoot/toe box but the midfoot would be challenging for someone with larger volume feet.
Thanks much for the review! And SG6 is definitely much stiffer to start off with. I tried SG6 on my first 20km hike, and it bounced so little and caused quite some pain to my feet. This SG6 is slightly smaller, so mine is a little half size up to 46 2/3. The support is great, though, but really too stiff. Maybe it really needs some mileage up to break in? So I'm thinking of using my old pair of SG5 instead for my coming 100km race in the next month...will see after I put some more mileage before my final decision 😹
I always tend to go up half a size in Hoka shoes, they can size small. It definitely feels a lot stiffer and firmer in the midsole compared to previous models of SG 🤔 Hope your 100k goes well and thanks for watching 🙏
hi thank you for the review. would you recommend this shoe not only for trail running but just for hiking? I'm looking for a good hiking shoe and since these just came out, i'm wondering if i should get them for long hikes (like 1-2 hrs)... and probably will go half size up
I’ve bounced around between Inov8, Hoka and VJ Sport for years. Over the last 18 months or so it seem Hoka as 1) removed the 2E wide option from a number of models and 2) made the toe box really narrow and low. This across the range of models.
Just ran in my new Asics Trabuco Max 3s! Was disappointed with the SG 5 midsole. TM 3s have that FF+ bounce. Maybe a bit unstable due to the stack… outsole grip is outstanding. After listening to this review I’m glad I’m giving them a try! Cheers!
I also found the Asics Trabuco and am using those now. My feet shift a little in them, but they are the closest I have found so far that resemble the cushion of SG 3.
Excellent Loyd. I had read other reviews about the SG6 and was not impressed. I was waiting for your review before making my final decision, which is to NOT buy these. The Saucony Xodus Ultra v1 remains the best all round trail shoe for me. The v2 is still very good but somehow not quite as good as v1, not exactly sure why. The V3...forget it! Luckily, I still have two V1s with plenty of miles left and four V2s! If you find a trainer that's perfect for you, my advice would be to buy plenty of them before the next 'downgraded' version comes out in 3 month's time!
I love my speedgoat 5 and I’m just about to replace them but unsure what to go for! I need 1 - 2 pairs for training and 50km and 100km races. Do I go for a speedgoat 6 and then something more cushioned?
Saw a few other people saying that even after 50k the midsole wont get softer. Hoka fixed the 200mile durability issue of the sg5 by overcorrecting and making the midsole a brick rivaling la sportiva 😂
Never got on with my speedgoat 5’s. Never felt like they offered any return. Absolutely love my Mafate speed 4 and to a slightly lesser extent, Tecton x 2. Excellent review Lloyd. Hopefully see you at the Serpent.
Totally agree - felt like the speedgoat 5 really beat up the legs by the end of an ultra. The Mafate Speed 4s are everything I ever wanted a speedgoat to be... They do a bit of everything and the energy return is much better!
Fully agree. Mafate Speed 4 remains unbeaten. Only thing I don't like about the Mafate is the dirt-collector heel tongue. Hope they remove that or add at least a little ring on the front to attach a gaiter.
I currently owned 3 pairs of SG 5 ( all wide version). It is a decent trail running shoes . I like the fit and comfort. I do agree that the lugs will struggle in muddier terrain and i did not get a good lockdown. After watching the review , i probably will skip the SG 6 . Nnormal Tomir ( 1st version) was probably firmest trail shoe that i have ever worn but the Vibram megagrip lite base on that shoes is arguably the best outsole grip out there .
Thanks Loyd 🙂 a shoe that I won't be byuing😉 I`m definitely not a Hoka fan and don't think I `ll ever be. Last one I tried was the Speedboat 5 and it was terrible. Narrow, very firm midsole, poor fit around the mid foot and a very noisy midsole. Sold after one run. Somehow the shoe has a reputation of, at least here in Denmark, being wide, comfortable and having a comfy midsole. I just don't get it. Cause that`s really not the case. And many many recommendations to new trail runners if they ask in various groups, to buy this shoe.
Same, I don’t get it. Of all the popular trail shoes I can understand why folk buy them, like the xodus ultra, merrells, ASICS, Nike Wildhorse, ultra glides or genesis, they all have their alignment with certain foot shaped or are solid all rounders. The SG 5s, super narrow, sloppy slidey fit, awful collar, and despite the vibram and the 5m lugs are rubbish in the mud.
Just picked up a used pair vs 4. For $15 us including shipping. I told them Hoka are too narrow in toe box, this dealer make an offer. I figured I’ll try them for post 50 mile races or sell. Time will tell,
I still miss the highly cushioned Mafate of 2016 or was it 2015? If they would be willing or able to reach this ancient level of rebouncing I would order several pairs!!!
After more than 50 pairs of Speedgoat 3s and 4s, I could not use the 5s without expensive insoles. The insole in the 5 is thin junk and led to significant metatarsal pain. The worst forefoot cushioning in any Hoke I've worn. Other people I know found the same thing. Since then I switched to the Speedlands which have been amazing. I hope Hoke fixes this in the 6 because I still like other things about the Speedgoats.
Interesting, I have not found them in wide in Europe. But I got my regular fit pair today and they fit me the same as the SG5 wide 🤷♂️ The sole is about 2mm narrower at the widest point but the upper looks and fits the same. Is definitely regular as is says US size 11 D and my 5's are US size 11 2E
@Run4Adventure im new to your channel and love your content and reviews. Have u ever reviewed a Garmin or Coros watch? If so which do u prefer/wear? Any info is very much appreciated!!!
Really glad you’re enjoying the channel and thanks for watching. I’m currently using the COROS Apex Pro and I love it! I’ve reviewed the COROS Vertix and the Apex Pro on the channel. I use to run with a Garmin but had a few issues with their watches and they weren’t that helpful sorting them out. Once I made the move to COROS I never looked back. Packed full of great tech, really long battery life and pretty good value. Hope this helps 🙂 Loyd
the various reviews on the midsole apparently go one of two ways- firm & more energy return or too firm & no energy return. For me if you do a good amount of road to trail and/or compacted trail it seems too firm.
It feels firm to me and I don’t feel like I’m getting a lot of energy return from the midsole? Maybe it needs more miles so it can bed in a bit more and soften up 🤔
I remember when the SG was on a level of its own, when it came to a shoe that was mega cushioned and bounced along the trail. All this ended for me after the SG3 and Evo (which is still my favourite ever trail shoe). Every SG since has been such a disappointment. I actually sent my SG5 back for a refund after one run. Was like a completely different shoe compared to the 3 or Evo. Come on Hoka, bring back a great shoe....
I so wish Hoka would return to the cushions used in Speedgoat 3. Until then, I am going with another brand as none of their other models have worked for me. Very disappointing as I used to run exclusively in Speedgoat.
I had sizing dramas with the SG2, gave 3 a go and found them ok, skipped 4, learned to really like 5, and am likely to not worry about 6 on the mounting body of evidence 😅 might go with the Mafate Speed 4 instead. Or the Agility Peak 5.
Holy shit. If they are really less bouncy and soft than the 5s then I am really disappointed. Has been the foundation of my running since the second model
The Speedgoat 5 completely ruined my feet for a week. Never experienced anything quite like that. Anyone else had problems with speedgoat 5 or did just get unlucky?
maybe too narrow? reason I stopped running after buying in them, only short walks/runs around house, .. would pick wide version and half size up at least still
@@majky358 I even got the wide version, but it wasnt enough. Dont think my feet are very wide. Makes me wonder what kind of feet you need for these shoes
sucks how HOKA don't make all their shoes in size 15... sorry to anyone in a 16 or above, but If the Speedgoat is going to change because other models are competing with similar features, they need to make each model in a 15 instead of only offering it in some models.
My 5s were the most "dead" shoes I have. No bounce at all. And I have 2 pairs.. Was interested because of the 2e, but now this is off my list completely. Trailfly in 2e might be the next.
I never ran in the EVO because I enjoyed the standard SG so much. I’m not ignoring it, I didn’t run in it so I can’t comment about it. It was obviously a great shoe because I’ve never heard a bad word said about it 👍🙂
It sure is Jack! I’d just run 100 miles the week before so unfortunately my body wasn’t ready for any technical stuff 🙂 I’ll be trying them out on the coast path before my full review 👍
HOKA's are poor quality shoes. had a pair of HOKA carbonX, they started to fall apart after less than 1000km. Replaced them with Adidas Nitro carbon plate, run twice the distance with minimal wear and tear.
Why do they continue to make them in such ugly colours?? I have speed goat 5 and I like running in them but they are gross to look at. My misses says I look like a little kid ready for his first day of kindergarten because of the colour scheme lol 😂
1:25 Did you try slapping the Speedgoat 6 to see if we get the Speedgoat 7 as well? 😁

@@mikehooley6398 Absolutely. I hope they don’t ruin the next version. Just ran the “race to the king”. Absolutely no issues with the Mafate speed 4.
Unreal! Hope the race went well!
Hows it compare with anacapa
Anacapa is a hiking shoe, the SG 6 is a running shoe so it’s very different 👍
I currently owned 3 pairs of SG 5 ( all wide version).
It is a decent trail running shoes . I like the fit and comfort. I do agree that the lugs will struggle in muddier terrain and i did not get a good lockdown.
After watching the review , i probably will skip the SG 6 . Nnormal Tomir ( 1st version) was probably firmest trail shoe that i have ever worn but the Vibram megagrip lite base on that shoes is arguably the best outsole grip out there .
I agree the TOMIR midsole does feel a lot firmer than I was expecting but the outsole is spot on 👍
Thanks Loyd 🙂 a shoe that I won't be byuing😉
I`m definitely not a Hoka fan and don't think I `ll ever be.
Time will tell,
Can you review New Balance Dynasoft Nitrel V6 please?
Loyd, what do you do with all the shoes you buy for the reviews? I’d sell’em., it must add up to a hefty sum each month?!
Hello Lloyd... Would you recommend the Clifton 9 GTx over this or the Mafate Speed 4.? Thanks and More power.... 🤙
He liked the Mafate, and the Clifton is a road shoe.
What would you pick between SG6 and Zegama 2?
I think I’d have to go for the Zegama 2 but it is quite heavy 🤔
Are you sure they come in a wide fit? I haven't been able to find any...
They are there in the US at least. I got my wide pair this week.
They’re definitely available in a wide fit 👍
Interesting, I have not found them in wide in Europe. But I got my regular fit pair today and they fit me the same as the SG5 wide 🤷♂️
The sole is about 2mm narrower at the widest point but the upper looks and fits the same.
Is definitely regular as is says US size 11 D and my 5's are US size 11 2E
Did a run, they are too narrow... I checked Hoka US site and they do have wide, but nowhere in Europe has them 🤷♂️
How is the firmness compared to eg Inov8 TrailFly 300G?
I’d say it feels a bit firmer than the 300G! It doesn’t feel like it’s returning any energy? 🤔
@Run4Adventure im new to your channel and love your content and reviews. Have u ever reviewed a Garmin or Coros watch? If so which do u prefer/wear? Any info is very much appreciated!!!
Garmin all the way. The Forerunner series for the win, if you are a runner.
Hope this helps 🙂
Loyd
Totally agree. Battery life on the Coros is awesome 👍@@Run4Adventure
@@GeoffDavison-k9b It sure is Geoff! I think it’s powered by witchcraft 😂
the various reviews on the midsole apparently go one of two ways- firm & more energy return or too firm & no energy return. For me if you do a good amount of road to trail and/or compacted trail it seems too firm.
It feels firm to me and I don’t feel like I’m getting a lot of energy return from the midsole? Maybe it needs more miles so it can bed in a bit more and soften up 🤔
Pink Loyd, the tongue is still too short. Actually, I went with the Catamount 3. Lighter faster and more technology in the midsole. 😊
I totally agree! The SG3 was a great trail shoe and it’s never been the same since 😕
Enjoyed watching 👍
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🙂
Tried them and they disappointed me to for the exact same reason - midsole did not agree with me
Sorry to hear that Patrick, thanks for watching 👍
Similar to Seth demoors reaction. Idk if I want to buy.
So...SG6 Vs Mafate Speed 4?
Zegama 2
@@RowOfMushyTiTI’ve heard the Z2s are a little worrying in terms of ankle rolling? Would love to be convinced otherwise.
@@StopTheRot Zegama 2 was really unstable for me. Also hot and heavy. Worse in every way for me vs. the Z1 except of course for the Vibram
@@RowOfMushyTiT alot heavier.
@@StopTheRot No ankle rolling, but it is a high soft shoe so you do fight the cushion if it's too technical.
I so wish Hoka would return to the cushions used in Speedgoat 3. Until then, I am going with another brand as none of their other models have worked for me. Very disappointing as I used to run exclusively in Speedgoat.
I totally agree, the SG3’s cushioning was great! 🏃♂️😁
They definitely felt stiffer and firmer than the 5’s! 😕
First
What’s a good starter shoe for trails?
Merrell Agility Peak 5
one that fits your foot and doesn't give you blisters.
Catamount 3
Saucony Xodus Ultra
@@Ginguredrunner But bad wet grip.
Think I'm gonna hold out for the Tecton X 3. This just looks very meh 😐
Typical Hoka: fix one issue, but ruin another.
Interestingly, I also don't like using my Speedgoats in muddy conditions. Too slippy.
sucks how HOKA don't make all their shoes in size 15... sorry to anyone in a 16 or above, but If the Speedgoat is going to change because other models are competing with similar features, they need to make each model in a 15 instead of only offering it in some models.
Wow, why are the shoes so tight in the forefoot? Nobody needs pointed running shoes!
The sole especially looks budget and heavy
You skipped the very best SpeedGoat, the EVO...... :(
My 5s were the most "dead" shoes I have. No bounce at all.
And I have 2 pairs..
Was interested because of the 2e, but now this is off my list completely.
Trailfly in 2e might be the next.
All the features fine, but the toebox is a nasty joke. The SG has always been incompatible with my foot.
In the US, Hoka's are boomer shoes. In the PNW, I'll meet 20 people over 60 wearing them casually to 1 person who runs in them on trail or road.
the durability of my shoes goes down like a cow's tail, I'm disappointed with Hoka's current trend
My boi the speedgoat evo keeps getting ignored. F. Best speedgoat iteration of all time.
I never ran in the EVO because I enjoyed the standard SG so much. I’m not ignoring it, I didn’t run in it so I can’t comment about it. It was obviously a great shoe because I’ve never heard a bad word said about it 👍🙂
That is one flat trail
It sure is Jack! I’d just run 100 miles the week before so unfortunately my body wasn’t ready for any technical stuff 🙂
I’ll be trying them out on the coast path before my full review 👍
They all suck after the 4. I have moved onto Topo and New Balance.
Running in Hoka's since 10+ years. The SG6 is by far the worst… it‘s a stiff brick.
I totally agree! It’s definitely not the best version of the SG, it’s such a shame 😟
HOKA's are poor quality shoes. had a pair of HOKA carbonX, they started to fall apart after less than 1000km. Replaced them with Adidas Nitro carbon plate, run twice the distance with minimal wear and tear.
Before 1000km! To be fair that’s pretty good mileage for a running shoe 🤷♂️
This looks like a Stinson.
One of the ugliest colorways ever. I was looking out for this one to replace my SG EVO, but I think I'll try something else.
If you’re use to the feel and performance of the SG EVO, I think you’d be very disappointed 🤔
Why do they continue to make them in such ugly colours?? I have speed goat 5 and I like running in them but they are gross to look at. My misses says I look like a little kid ready for his first day of kindergarten because of the colour scheme lol 😂
Agreed they look nasty 👍
I thought it was the speedgoat review but instead...
It was a Speedgoat review!? 🤷♂️
🤡
Seriously, a sponsor plug? On top of that, a piece of garbage that does absolutely nothing? Welp, time to smack that unsub button. It's been fun. Cya.
A sponsored plug! What are you talking about? Did you watch the video 🤷♂️
I bought these shoes myself so this is definitely not a sponsored video!
