    Really stable shoe in rocky terrain.Ive had sg 3s sg 4 wide and sg 5 wide.My favourite so far, I prefer this midsole to mushy sg 5s
    Top hole for lace lock just leaves tongue bit short .
    Great reviews Chad

    My first experience with hokas was gaviotas or something similar about 10 years ago and I’ve been buying them since. One thing to note is the impressive grip on the trail and hiking shoes. The road shoes have improved but used to slide on a wet floor.

    GREAT REVIEW CHAD!!! Love that it's honest and actually used in a race while testing. I have been on the fence about buying this shoe or getting the SG5 ( I had 2 previous pairs,) or the Mafate speed 4 for my first 50K ultra. I am worried that there might not be "enough" cushion and will be too firm. I know the 5's were pretty plush on the foot. Oh, also looking at TNF Alta Mesa 500. Any advice or recommendations? My race is in January, and fairly technical. Appreciate ya!

      Thank you for watching the video and for your kind words! The Speedgoat 6 certainly wouldn't be a bad option to consider, but if I were training for and racing a 50k, here are a few other shoes I would also highly consider:
      - Topo MTN Racer 3. Very lightweight, wide toe box fit, inspiring underfoot experience at the expense of a little more ground feel. This is the shoe that I used for my 100 mile race this year, but my feet did get tired of the shoe after 70 miles or so.
      - VJ MAXx2. Used for my 50 mile race earlier this year with great success. Not really a max cushion shoe but good underfoot feeling nonetheless.
      - Salomon Genesis. Probably one of the best all-around trail shoes with a premium build and secure fit.
      - La Sportiva Prodigio. Similarly to the Salomon Genesis, but with a rock plate. Great for very technical mountain running.
      All this said, if I were to run a 50k-100 mile race right now, I'd probably grab the Hoka Tecton X 3 or Speedland GS:PDX (reviews coming!) but these two premium trail shoes come with a premium price.
      What 50k are you running?

      @@SeeChadRun WOW- thanks for all this info, it's beyond appreciated! I have been looping at that Topo shoe. Also, read raving reviews about Salomon genesis. The La Sportiva Prodigio looks so good. V curious about the Speedland GS:PDX though as well. The Tecton X3 also has caught my eye, but not sure if it'd be overkill for this first race.
      I am not sure if I will need a rock plate. There are very rocky sections, but not through the whole course. It is the HOKA Bandera, TX trail race. Have you run it? Im on the 50k race but there is also 100k etc..

      @@SeeChadRun This advice is perfectly timed; I just signed up for my first 50K in March, and both of my pairs of SG5 are on their last legs. I have been looking at the Mtn Racer 3 for daily training, and considering splurging on the Tecton X3 for the race. Besides there will be lots more races after that to get the full value out of them :)

    Thanks for a straightforward review. Been running the SG5 for training and races, and been happy with them but close to needing replacement. Have been contemplating the SG6.

    I watched your review of the Topo Mtn Racer 3. For a wide footed runner just looking for a sort of single shoe to do it all trail runner, mostly longer slow runs, would you recommend the wide fit SG6 over the TMR 3? I was hoping to find a shoe that was protective, good on different types of trail, generally not super technical, but there are a lot of hills on most trails here (Canada east coast), and a fair bit of windy single track.
    I was looking forward to a bit of a fun ride, not a super aggressive one, and I am now maybe leaning towards the Topo, even though it's about $60 more expensive here. I worry a little about durability of the Topo. I don't imagine it will last much beyond 400-500kms, whereas the firmer Hoka seems like a tank.
    Should I consider anything else: the Broooks Cascadia, Saucony Peregrine, New Balance Hierro, (Salomon shoes are generally narrow and do not come in a wide fit version like the Cascadia, Speedboat & Peregrine). I've also looked at Norda's, but though wider, they are still not nearly as wide as Topo or wide fits of the shoes I mentioned.

    • @SeeChadRun
      @SeeChadRun  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for watching the videos! I really like the Topo MTN Racer 3 but feel that the SG6 midsole will last a little longer and offer more protection underfoot. The Salomon Genesis is a great all-around trail shoe but is more narrow fitting. The La Sportiva Prodigio is also worth considering as the midsole feels good and it has a rock plate for protection, and it is a little wider than a Solomon but not as much as a Topo. The Prodigio actually fits similar to the SG6. I also haven't been impressed with Altra's trail shoes as of late, nor did I like the Brooks Caldera 7. As for Saucony, Merrell, Speedland, New Balance, I'm trying to get shoes from each of those brands to review on the channel soon. I will be reviewing the Nike Zegama 2 and North Face Altamesa 500 in the coming weeks as well.

      Seems like the firmness/stiffness of the midsole is a common observation. Do you think it maybe improves durability? I wonder what Hoka's thinking was behind that.

    • @SeeChadRun
      @SeeChadRun  3 місяці тому

      @@solebrother9620 I think it does improve durability and longevity. It would also be more noticeable/problematic on non-trails as the dirt seems to not be as hard as the street/concrete, so in short, the stiffer midsole is noticed but not problematic.

  • @hamoudalnasser
    @hamoudalnasser 2 місяці тому

    How firm is that midsole compared to similar "jack of all trades" trail shoes like the Cascadia, Peregrine, Hierro, etc...? I thought the GOATs were always renowned for their bouncy comfort. Is this like NB making a firm 1080 or something?

    • @SeeChadRun
      @SeeChadRun  2 місяці тому

      The midsole was more firm than I expected compared to what I had heard and seen in past versions... As for recommendations, I'll reply to your other comment on that. Thanks for watching my videos!

    Compared with la sportiva prodigio ?

    • @SeeChadRun
      @SeeChadRun  3 місяці тому +1

      The Speedgoat 6 and Prodigio are both great trail shoes but otherwise quite different from each other. Different people will enjoy one over the other for various reasons. The biggest difference is underfoot feel, with the Speedgoat 6 being more universally comfortable and the Prodigio feeling more responsive. The Prodigio is a better technical big mountain shoe, but the Speedgoat 6 is probably the better ultra running shoe. Hope this helps!

    Speedgoats 6 are completely terrible shoes. Bought them because everyone was talking about Speedgoats 5 positively and tested them on the Grossglockner Ultra Trail in one of the most technical terrains of Austria and they failed hugely. They are very stiff, I felt almost like running barefoot. They only performed well when running fast but in very technical terrain you also have to scrumble a bit , you have to hike a bit and you can't simply speed up much and this is the moment they fail the most. Practicaly just ran with them GGUT and then a couple of other trails , 300 km and their outsole is completely ruined. Changed them for Mafate Speed 3 and they feel much better.

      Try the SG 5 while they are still available and on sale. I have gone through at least six pairs of 5s, thousands of technical hilly miles in all weather and love them. The 6s hurt my feet, heel, hips and they were stiff. They were light and grippy and fast and protective but i was in pain after every time. Returned them and stocked up on more 5s
