I love games that have actually started doing this. I can't remember which one (maybe Fallout), but I like letting enemies go if they start running away. Just makes my character feel more human.
In the video game in stars and time it does a good balance of synergising gameplay with the story. And likewise, knows how to reel back on gratuitous gameplay for the story when necessary as to not get repetitive You can trigger an accidental/intentional option to not have to fight bosses or mooks anymore at the back half/end of the game if you're too strong and grounded too hard so you don't need oveelevel to stay ahead anymore Basically beating an enemy so bad it scars the others into running away whenever they see you going forward This made playing the other parts of the game and story required to beat it WAY easier since their wasn't 1 hit ko unnescary enemies and bosses trying to jump you midway while dealing with a puzzle or maze or some thing So many Will details and secrets of a pretty much every boss in the main character is coded with the level of common sense as to not make gameplay repetitive

I was playing Shadow of Mordor and thought of this.
The Uruks just run straight into battle knowing that even if they kill Talion, they still literally, canonically, cannot kill Talion.
Like, they know this. They know Talion is immortal. They literally call him Grave-Walker. WTF do they gain by killing themselves on him?
They get promoted. Aren’t they supposed to be bred just to be soldiers, so they will do anything to become captains? That’s always how I saw it.
The alternative is not very compelling. An Uruk running away out of cowardice is going to wish Talion killed him when he returns to mordor.

As a game designer this is why I always give minions some sort of morale stat.
I love games that have actually started doing this. I can't remember which one (maybe Fallout), but I like letting enemies go if they start running away. Just makes my character feel more human.
In the video game in stars and time it does a good balance of synergising gameplay with the story. And likewise, knows how to reel back on gratuitous gameplay for the story when necessary as to not get repetitive
You can trigger an accidental/intentional option to not have to fight bosses or mooks anymore at the back half/end of the game if you're too strong and grounded too hard so you don't need oveelevel to stay ahead anymore
Basically beating an enemy so bad it scars the others into running away whenever they see you going forward
This made playing the other parts of the game and story required to beat it WAY easier since their wasn't 1 hit ko unnescary enemies and bosses trying to jump you midway while dealing with a puzzle or maze or some thing
So many Will details and secrets of a pretty much every boss in the main character is coded with the level of common sense as to not make gameplay repetitive
