“I’m a Slick Rick die-hard. That first line is from ‘Runaway.’ That second Slick Rick album is slept on. If you’re a lyricist enthusiast, then you should know that you’re just now catching up to Slick Rick. But that was one of my favorite records when I heard that album. It was just dope, and that’s how the line became a part of ‘My World.’
“Preem didn’t give out beat tapes. He did his production on the spot. He came and scooped me up from my crib, and we went to the studio. He started laying a couple of joints, catching my ear a little bit. But then when he came with this record, with the bassline and the keys, and then he put the drums to it-he did the shit in like twenty minutes-and was like, ‘It sound like some Mobb Deep shit.’ And I’m like, ‘Yo, you buggin’. Get out the studio, leave me alone for like twenty, thirty minutes.’ And he was like, ‘I’m going to get me some weed anyway though, so I’ll be back.’ And when he came back, the song was written.
“He didn’t like that beat at first. He thought it sounded similar to ‘Shook Ones.’ But then when I said that first line to him-the Slick Rick shit-he was like, ‘Yeah yeah, go in the booth.’ So I went in the booth and I laid it, and he was like, ‘Yo, this shit hot right here. We good money.’
“That whole premise of ‘It’s my world,’ that wasn’t about me. That was about people in general. Have that confidence in yourself. Who else gonna have confidence in you, but you?”

Same here Brother as a New Yorker who grew up living Hip Hop culture and on the Music since 1986 and still loving it and still current that second Slick Rick Album is Dope AF, I was just bumping it yesterday Mistakes, I shouldn't have done it, King, Moses etc all great song's.

Man.....the fall of 1997, Jewelz remained on constant repeat in my dorm room. This first track after the intro.....whew. An instant classic was born. From the signature Preemo drums, to Mr. Credle's incredible flow, even to the cowboy whistling, wild westernesque vibe of the joint.....this was greatness manifested.

I was in 10th grade when Word..Life came out. That shit held me down walking home from school and football practice. Drained a lot of batteries listening to that jawn . Much respect to OC and MC Serch

Haha, I use this track as part of my workout list too. The whole premise of the track just gets you hyped. "Ready for war, pushups get my chest swollen". 💪🏾 Love the unorthodox chorus my Organized Konfusion too. Maybe one day we'll get an OK reunion track produced by Premier.
O.C. is one of the most underrated dudes for real. Starchild, Jewelz, Word Life, etc are all GEMS no doubt.💯👍

@@hudekphoto Yeah I owned Word..Life,like the actual album awhile back and I remember it was out of print so it was pretty rare in the 00's. I used go to digging on Amazon back in the early 00's and I bought Jewelz for $1.25. Best value purchase I think I ever made for music. Jewelz is what got me hooked,I own all of his albums now. Bought "The Underground King" mixtape off of O.C.'s Facebook and he sent me a free copy of Starchild as a thank you.

Premier is Hip Hop. He does Hip Hop, he Teaches us (both old heads / new heads) Hip Hop. He reps Hip Hop (always has a shoot out for artists, products, medias, production companies, hardware), he Wears Hip Hop (Criminal Minded cap/t-shirt). He is my own personification of Hip Hop (producers and MC included, as he raps with his hands on his signature scratched choruses).

R.I.P. to U Nast, I didn't know he returned to the essence until I saw this episode. He appeared on one of, if not my favorite O.C. song ever - "Your Life" off the Soul In The Hole Soundtrack. Beat is incredibly dope, my favorite piano loop ever.

Summer '97, album just dropped. My crew's annual VA beach trip from MD. We played this not only on the entire ride down BUT half the time while we were there. We had our box and must've bought batteries every other day. No one stopped us. The heads that did turn were like "what is that?" It was our theme ALBUM for most of that trip and we bought other music but no one complained when we started that joint up again & again. Them dayz, boy!

Jewelz had Preem, Buck, Beatminerz, Show, Lord finesse which put it on that level to me. as well. World Life is an incredible album and Buck def did his thing on the production

The hook on this is so iconic and its not even Premo scratched. A lesser producer would have just had the loop without the broken harp chops. I've always loved this song, as OC just centers down the beat, riding those kicks and snares with a dash of sci-fi through the entire song.

"Jewelz" is still one of my all-time favorite hip-hop albums. Introduced me to Bumpy Knuxxx and chock full of beats by all of my favorite producers. So good. This record is perfect for riding around on a cold winter's day. And "M.U.G." might be in my Top Five favorite Primo beats.
This album and this song in particular sparked a convo that birthed a life long friendship between myself and my ace Jus....much love and much respect 🙌🏻🙌🏻

O.C. , Nine, and PMD's solo albums. These three MC's never got the love they deserved. Those who like them, adore them. But they never reached the sales many other less talented rappers reached. DJ Premier on the other hand, thankfully, is adored by everyone who loves hip hop. From NY to Tokyo, to my place, Athens, GR. Thank you Preemo, SIR.
