- Tie rod ends: 45 to 60 minutes ($130 / $220 / $400) Per side
In this video I replace the tie rod ends on a 1996 Volvo 850 that was equipped with a TRW rack. You need to be careful when ordering parts due to the multiple brand of racks that may have been installed on your model car.

Hey man - your videos are indispensable for the home mechanic. You've really helped me several times now, so THANKS!
Lex Python You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
+Lex Python Hell yeah! The dealer wanted almost a thousand bucks to do a heater-core.. Heater-cores on these volvos is super easy thanks to this ^ Robert DIY guy showing the steps.
Most shops wanna charge out the ass to work on volvos, for no good reason (in my opinion), so im stuck doing this stuff myself and I probably would have given up if I had to go at it blind.. THANKS again Robert!
Glad they are helping.
Lex Python this dude has helped me literally every time!
Your videos have helped me maintain and take care of my v70 98, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and educating others who own Volvos!
You are welcome.
Robert you are a legend in Volvo repair world. I think you deserve more but hopefully everyone helps you out sometimes.
thanks for your support.
Just wanted to thank you for this video Robert, it gave me the confidence to do the bad tie rod end on my 2007 Volvo V50 for £20 instead of letting the dealer do it for £150. Only mistake I made was taking the nut all the way off the ball joint before hammering it out, because it flattened the end of the thread and I had to cut it off to get it through the hole. There were a couple of points when I didn't think it was going to come off (seperating inner/outer rods took an hour) but I kept after it and won the day. If anyone is planning on doing this I would recommend going in a few times in the days before and hitting those bolts with penetrating fluid, really helps. Thank you again Sir.
+Mcpricex thanks for sharing.
Robert. Thanks for the great effort. Your videos are clear, as well as your instructions. I am traveling to fix this part for my son and I wanted to go prepared ahead of time. Nice job!
+barryyoungco you are welcome
Thanks again for the help! It's really nice to know what I'm up against before I begin. Your videos have been helpful for a long time, they are greatly appreciated.
Thanks for watching
as always thanks man. I always watch your vids before I take on doing anything on my Volvo. Very helpful and I appreciate it.
+Jav Munguia thanks for watching.
Hey Robert, just wanted to thank you for your videos. You’re keeping my 1995 Swedish Tank Volvo 850 turbo wagon on the road 👊🏻🔥🍻
Awesome! That's the goal.
Very helpful as usual; I had no idea about the inner rack ends, got some movement in the ball, this video makes it clear and simple cheers.
Thanks for watching
All your videos are helpful. You explain it well. You have helped me a lot with my 98 volvo s70. It's turning out to be a nice car.
Glad to help
Hi Robert - The strongest man in Sweden put my inner tie rod on my S70. I used a tool that looks Like capital letter "D". It bites the inner tie rod where you used the pipe wrench by tightening nuts on the tool so you can clamp it tight. It has a 3/8s ratchet hole to put extenders and then you crank the whole thing with a breaker bar standing up, . I clamped hard with vise grips to stabilize rack. Also it helped me to have other side of car up to turn wheel to extend rod/rack by being able to get more space.
They are tight sometimes. Don't worry about holding the rack.
Hi Robert. Thank you for this videos, great way to show the little tricks.
Thank you Robert. Also some parts stores lend a wrench kit to take out inner tie rod. I had to use blow torch and sledge to get my outer out of knuckle. I use method with string and tape measure to align my wheels. That video is somewhere on youtube.
I need to find that video myself. My inner tie rod ends are stuck. They will be replaced with the rack soon. lol
You are much appreciated Robert. Thanks for all the work and the sharing that you do.
thanks for watching.
Hi Robert - Happy to report I successfully completed the "task at hand". Wanted to add a tip on boot install. I had very tough time getting the thing onto the rack... could get one side but not completely on other and pushing turning is tough in tight space. My solution was to put boot in end in old coffee can of boiling water on stove (also dipped small end in too). Then carried the mess into garage (had previously sprayed silicone on the rack lip and quickly put the thing on via pushing and rotating. I did end up blowing the small hole past its part on the rod but was able to gently work it back when zip tie was secure. in getting zip tie secure I clamped on end with visegrip and the weight of that allowed me to snug the ziptie from underneath car and gently nudge the locking end tight with 90 degree curved long needle nose pliers. Tight spot to hold light and work without a 3rd arm. For some reason my zip tie would not just pull tight without the nudging.
Dang, what brand boots?
Beck/Arnley - they should include Advil with the thing. LOL!
Once again a very well done articulate video with great instruction. I'm going to be doing the outer tie rod ends on a 2000 S80 in the next day or so. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
rindress Thank you for watching.
Thank you sir for your work and your informative videos. They have helped a lot as i am a Volvo fanatic and these are great.
You are welcome.
another Volvo back up and running thanks to Robert !
Doing ball joints and tie rods next weekend. Thank you for this video Robert
You are welcome.
Love the vids man! Great info and presentation!
cigarobsession Thanks and thanks for watching.
Robert you da Man!!!
You have saved me thousands of dollars. Witch means you have basically helped me pay rent. My 1996 850 is still whipping around potholes thanks to you, my frend.
I just replaced my lower control arm, outer tie rod, and sway bar linkage thanks to this video and others of yours.
?Question? on this video how did you know the inner tie rod was bent before you remove the grease boot???
Thanks again bud! You really are helping people out Here Robert. 👍
An alignment shop told me.
Lol!!!
My alignment shop this Monday told me I shouldn't even drive the car home it was so dangerous. And it would probably cost thousands of dollars to fix, and how much $$ would I want to put into a 96 Volvo well $68 later from RockAuto and a Saturday afternoon, Pow! She's ready for her 2nd try at the alignment shop.
Very good detailed instructions on this video and very clear and sharp video too.
+Norman De La Cruz thanks for watching
Cool, cool, just replaced the struts and sway bars in my 2005 volvo s60, ran into an issue when i overtorqued the axel hub bolt and broke it off in the axle, no shop in town would get it out, but i watched another video went and bought a 12$ extractor kit and got it out in about 15 mins. Bout to do the balljoints and tie rods so helpful vid. I think im going to put tape around the edge where the inner tie rod meets the tie rod end to get a pretty exact match without the counting.
+Karmella Andreu-Vivas Whatever is easy.
Smashing job :-))
I bet those new trackrod ends were quite close to the original settings, i would be supprised if the people doing the alignment would have to move them much more than one turn.
zx8401ztv I hope, but you have to let them check.
Left and right inner tie rods and tie rod ends are on my to do list tomorrow morning. Hopefully I won’t have to replace the rack🤞
why would you need to replace the rack?
Great video, as always :) Thx ALOT Robert, you are really the best!
+Leif Rören Thanks for watching.
Thanks Robert, this was very helpful for me.
+Jim Millis good deal. Thanks for watching.
Really do appreciate you breaking it down into dumby terms for this big dumby right here.
Just trying to keep it basic. Not everyone understands all of the mechanic terms.
Thanks much Robert. Hope you are doing well.
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
Once again Robert saves the day :)
Thanks for watching
I just mark the position of the locking nut and then make sure the distance stays the same. I've done this on 3 cars and it's still been within spec when I take it to an alignment shop. No alignment needed. Counting turns can be incorrect because the nut doesn't always catch right away whereas the distance between two set points on the same component will not change.
Thanks for the tip.
Thank you so much Robert for all your help! You've saved me a ton of money across multiple repair jobs. I do have one question; would bad tie rods cause a vibration in the front passenger side around 75-85 mph? I checked the control arm and I didn't feel any play in it, and I don't hear any of the characteristic noise of bad bearings as described in one of your videos. The inner and outer passenger side tie rods did have play when I pulled on them with the car off the ground. Thank you!
Probably a bad strut.
Robert DIY Thank you!
Hey Robert, love the videos.
I just did this job, but I missed the threadlock part of the install. Should I redo the whole job again and add the threadlock or would it be ok without the threeadlock? Thanks again for the great content
Nope
Robert, as long as you're under there, do a short inspection on the oil supply line for the turbo. Something on the back side of the engine, is leaking really horribly. As far as the power steering rack, I just replaced my entire assembly for a 1997 850 T5. Apparently, Volvo changed vendors from TRW to SMI. The biggest difference is, now the outer tie rod ends are included & already installed. The 04 press-in studs are included, but not the nuts. Also, the original part number, supersedes to a different, more expensive part number. The change affects most Volvo models; not just the 850.
Gordon302 The guy knew his rack is leaking.
Robert DIY Well, that may be so. However, based on what I saw in your video, the entire rack & pinion was covered in a thick, caked-on, oil sludge.
Yes, a little oil around here collects dirt like crazy. It is very dusty/dirty here in the desert.
Nice vid Robert
MarshallWillanholli Thanks for watching.
I'm literally right in the middle of this. I got the outer tie rod off just fine (just had to beat it with a hammer to get the ball joint out), but I had to cut the end off of the inner tie rod off because I'm reusing the boot and I couldn't get that nut off at 1:39. I tried everything up to a propane torch and wd40. That thing was so seized on there from 18 years of driving. Good tutorial as always. Used a little silicone spray to help the boot slide off.
LJRossPhoto Good deal. Glad the video helped a little.
Great video and need advice on vibration on front end.. rack and pinion is fine no leaks.. but get vibration on turns.
HOW OLd are the struts?
@@RobertDIY installed in 2018
Thank you sir, I watched and used quite a few of your videos. You are a great mechanic but most of all a gentlemen. I have a 2000 V70 and I just wanted to replace the boots that were ripped but I cannot get the lock nuts moving on the inner tie rod on both sides. I tried WD40 some other anti rust oil, heating with a torch with no success. Now the only solution that I see is to replace the inner tie rods, unless you have other suggestions. What is the torque for inner tie rod and whatever I have to secure the rack shaft from rotating when threading the inner tie rod on?
I've never had the rack shafts move, I think they are keyed on the rack. I have no idea what a torque is on them. It's so hard to get anything in there to tighten them, I just make them as tight as possible. Probably the same thing the last person did, that's why you can't get them loose.
Excellent explication.
Thanks for watching.
Love your videos, they have saved me money and trouble. My 98 V70 AWD XC has 200k miles and has some suspension issues, the right tie rod end is loose. I can move the wheel from side to side maybe ~1" and it pulls to the right when braking. The struts are worn and the right one is dripping oil on the CV boot that's attached to the wheel. Should I replace these items one by one or when is it, or is it ever, worth it to buy a kit and just replace everything?
I don't understand your question. If it's bad, replace it.
What is the little plastic bushing piece called at the end of the steering rack where the rod escapes the rack.
I have no idea, but I usually don't worry about them when they break.
I need to do this on a S60 on the same side, it looks the same, only the torque is 60ft.lb (80nm) it seems to be quite tight.
Probably
You da man +RobertDiy
Thanks for watching.
Robert, I need to change my power steering hoses on my 850. It looks like the job will be much easier if I take off the drivers side tie rods, both outer and inner. Are the fittings more accessible with the tie rods off?
Yikes! I think you need to drop the subframe on one side and support the engine.
ua-cam.com/video/gomSAroalHw/v-deo.html
I was wondering if there is a specific torque specification for the inner tie rod ends? Most people I see typically just put them in as tight as they go and it's usually not a problem.
Michael Sackstein I have not seen any.
perfect video thank you!
Spencer Stagg Thanks for watching.
I have a 2000 S80. The outer tie rods in your video have pins down/nut on the bottom. Inspecting mine, they are pin up/nut on top. Did someone put mine on backwards?
No, they are the newer style. You need a special tool to get them out. :(
The outer tie rod is stuck tired heat and on blaster . I ordered inner tie rod so I'm planning on replacing both. Can I get the inner tie rod off and save the rubber boot cover?
Sure.
great video.
Raul Romo Thanks for watching.
What's the best way to get the rubber boot off of the inner tie rod? It feels and looks like there's a metal hose clamp around the end of the boot closest to the rack, but it's not obvious how it's clamped on there. Thanks
Bert Langdon Use a very small tip screw driver and work it open.
Robert DIY thank you!
My steering stopper crumbled and broke after I took my inner tie rod off. Do I need the stopper? And what could I use to replace it
I never worry about that.
hi sir Robert, Good day
are the rack and pinion of 850 are fit with v70? really need help, i am from Philippine and volvo parts are not really available here. but i found a rack and pinion of 850 and wandering if i can use it to replacement for v70. hope u can help me. thank you a lot (maraming salamat)
+Mc Aga Depends on the year of the V70. Volvo used 2 racks, a SMI and TRW. So,
if you pull a rack from a car, make sure you pull everything from the
knuckle in (tie rod ends and all).
Hi Robert - Is there any trick to getting the old boot off on the steering rack side? I cannot see whatever type clamp is holding it in place. I've been pulling with pliers and each baffle of boot keeps breaking off in little donut chunks.
You may have to clean it off.
Thanks much Robert. Also going to use my phone camera to get a peek behind boot.
Got the driver side off with a little elbow grease, passenger one ive tried some solutions as I thought it was a tight thread, also tried heating it, but still no luck. Have any other suggerstions hot I can get the outter tie rod off the inner?
+Nik Thomson take inner off and try it off of the car.
Robert DIY tried that already, might just end up replqcing both inners at this point lol

Hi Robert. I have a 2005 Neon that needs a harmonic balance repair. Can I do it myself or should I have a professional to do it. Do you have a video showing how to fix it.
I don't know if you can do it or not. Usually just takes a impact gun/tool to break the bolt loose. You will also need to take the serpentine belt off. Not to hard.
ua-cam.com/video/YpOYTVpzzic/v-deo.html
The linked video may show one being removed. Also the Honda and Mercury timing belt jobs show me getting a harmonic balancer loose.
Thanks great video.
my 2000 volvo s80 t6 inner tie rods are very tight i used tie rod wrench no use of it can you please help me.
siva Gogineni What is it that you need help with?
In ChrisFix’s videos, he pumps the new outer tie rod joint full of grease as a final step. Is there a reason you don’t do that in your tie rod videos?
mine are sealed.
I have a 99 c70 5 speed that ive been doing a complete restoration on . The inner tie rods are ok but I am replacing them anyways.. I see how easy they spin off in the videos I watch but mine seem stuck on.. I love all your videos with step by step tips... if you were in my area I would hire you to help me .. Anyways if you have any tips for me how to get them darn inner tie rods off please let me know ... Thanks
Adam Fibish I guess you have to pull harder. You can also try spraying them down with a chemical like Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster. Especially if you are in a corrosive area like northern US.
OK will try .. thanks
Thank you!! Great vid :)
zwiLLX Thank you for watching.
Do you have any help for the rack-n-pinion for a Volvo . I'm working on a 1998 s70 and i always come check you out 1st
+Rik Soldevil in about 2 weeks.
just really wanted to know if you think it can be done without removing the sub frame. Thanks im sure i will watch it in 2 weeks
Rik Soldevil subframe has to be lowered on 3 sides.
dang, thanks for your respose, appreciate it!! Love the videos
🎉 It is better if you had a head on vid camera. 😁 My suggestion.
probably right.
Uses open-ended wrench as perpendicular brace for crescent wrench = mind blown.
+danaande curb side mechanics.
Your consistently calm tone of voice, no matter how involved the repair, would have made me trust you in and of itself, but then you completely earned my allegiance with the Steelers hat.
how can I get better fuel mileage out of my 99v70 wagon non turbo
+Lamar Munson what are you getting now.
+Robert DIY I'm not sure but I know It should be a little better on highway
how the hell do you get theboot on? I'm losing my mind
The inner boot? Push!
How to know when u need to replace it
When they have wear.
@@RobertDIY thanks you Robert
Hey Robert , Hi, I'm in trouble. first they put my new Meyle HD control arm on it's was running smoothly, I took it back for an alignment next day they knew my struts were bad, Id told them I think my tie rods are bad, they didn't listen now my car is a wreck and caster/ camber is screwed up. when I left the shop it did a hard right. Now it's thumping bad. Can I go ahead and change my tie rods w/ this mess, this is going to screwy my bearing up I just know it. what Can I do?, plez help I'm broke and my address is 1994 vovolane if you know what I'm saying. TY Robert help me plez.
I don't understand what you are asking. If you have bad suspension parts, replace them ASAP. Get an alignment AFTER the suspension is fixed. Tie rod ends are about $12 each.
Robert DIY Thank you Robert. so I'm ok to change my outer tire rod? I'm really strapped , but it goes bulpbulpbulp all the time now, I need to start somewhere so I can at least drive w/ tearing something major up...so changing my outer tire rod which I think is a major culprit with the blup sounds driving , will help me. do you understand? HELP😓 I need to at least drive to help me get this fixed .I shouldn't have got it aligned. do you think the wishbone is not on correctly. I had it done at a tech. school so no worries, no sueing will happen! just be honest ok🤐
I would take the car back where they did the alignment and ask them why it's thumping. Tie rod ends should not cause that.
@@RobertDIY hey Robert Happy Christmas my shocks are the cause bad going to put new Sachs struts and question you think Euro bushing and bearing plates will be ok?
Mine will not pop out at all. Tried for awhile now
+Jav Munguia need a fork, large screwdriver or let a shop do it.
+Robert DIY thanks Robert but I got 'em done. Just finished and test drove her. She's not shaking as much anymore but I think it needs an alignment done. I counted the turns and everything. Replaced them cuz the cars been shaking whenever I go over 50 and I put it on a lift to do the exhaust recently and noticed the outer tie rod end was bad.
ok
Steelers!
+Peter Vuoto did good last night.
Perfect time to hit their stride
-.- i should pay attention when i take shit off next time. cause i didnt count turns but i can see the thread corrosion. also i was putting the tie rods upside down with the nut on the top of the spindle. holy crap im retarded
Joseph Opanel Happens to the best of us. Now I actually count and write it on the new part with a sharpie. LOL
Must be nice to not live where salted roads corrode the shit out of everything. You make it look like a cake walk but when everything is rotten it ain't fun haha
+Shaun Slodvon Not at all. This car came from the South.
+Robert DIY Well I appreciate the help you supplied buddy, thanks. I ended up just heating the shit out of it with a torch after continuously applying rust penetrant and she came loose finally!
Hi Robert,
You steering lock limiters aren't broken.
i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b590/A_Hoejgaard/foto1_zpsb55678ab.jpg
Anders Højgaard Thanks. I thought they were bad. What are they used for?
They are used on turbo models for wider tires. I got 225/45-17 on my non turbo and they would eat my inner fenders without. Basically it stops you from turning your wheel all the way.

I don't know. You'll have to look at it or ask the dealer to desifer the vin.
