Unlike other villains, Rhas doesn't hate Batman-he actually has enormous respect for him and has expressed regret that they can't see eye to eye and work together. In a way he perhaps see's Batman as the son he never had-or wishes he had.
I love how Ra's addressed Batman as detective every time they met. What would have been really cool is if Ra's had connections or had been the leader of the assassination league from Batman Beyond that Curare was from.
I had known of Ghul in the comics, but the first I saw of him on screen was in Batman Begins as opposed to TAS. Thus, I tend to still say Rahs al Ghul, instead of raysh.
@Immortalfire Same and that`s actually closer to the original Arabic as opposed to the weird, awkward Arabic/Hebrew mix Denny O` Neil and the BTAS creative team decided to go with for the pronunciation! ameliarating.tumblr.com/post/20442467957/house-of-al-ghul-pronunciation-guide
I always really loved Ras Al Ghul in the animated series. He was a really interesting and complex character, and the episodes with him were always so fun to watch. I also adored the actor that played him in the movie. He was amazing!
I always loved Al Ghul because he was much different than other Batman villains before, he came off like a James Bond villain, which writer Denny O'Neil intended
Makes you wonder who is Batman's true arch-enemy: Ra's al-Ghul or the Joker Also given how the comics are turning out anyone want to bet we might be calling Talia Al-Ghul, Talia Wayne soon
The Devil's Head... Ras is truly an unique villain: He's never allied with any other villain, in the animated series at least, he's more or less immortal, and as mentioned in the video, he doesn't really spend much time in Gotham. Thanks for the video.
Ras is the most realistic villian (guess that's why they used him in Begins). In a way I almost want him to win because he doesn't see himself as a villian, he only wants to save the world.
I read on TV Tropes that voice director Andrea Romano's first choice for Ra's al Ghul was Christopher Lee. However, according to Romano, it would have been "too difficult" to have him play a recurring role in the series due to him living in England at the time.
@PrairieDawgStudios As an aside: there was a comic storyline where Rhas met Bane and was so impressed by his intellect and ability that he decided to name him as his heir instead of Batman. And consequently, there is a rumor that in The Dark Knight Rises, Bane will be assisted by Talia Al Ghul, Rhas' daughter in his attempts to destroy Gotham.
Rha's is a unique amongst the rogues gallery in that he does not hate Batman; in fact, he greatly respects and admires him, and he is actually quite sad that he and Batman can't see eye to eye.
@Arak Drakoniz Christopher Nolan`s English and there are more people of Arabic descent in the U.K. than the U.S. Also, the Arabic is Ross or Ra-as. The Hebrew is Resh or Rosh.
Technicality, Ra's is immortal because of the pit and Savage not only want to rule the world but to destroy humanity as well while Ra's al Ghul is sometimes seen "cleansing" the world by destroying humanity mostly Gotham.
I'll always remember Ras holding his daughter above that bubbling pit and laughing manically- For some reason, thats my strongest memory from the animated series.
Has anyone noticed that when we see the "Batman the animated series" staff being interviewed that the characters behind them look very similar to that person? I just noticed it XD
yeah bane is very underrated he's the only one who has broken the bat yet most fans only see joker as his true enemy but bane kicks ass especially in the new batman movie
He is every bit as smart and clever as Batman. And while he is obviously disturbed, he is not a complete loon like The Joker or Two Face. He is very rational and even tempered. It makes him very unique as a villain.
its amazing the ways batman is connected to starwars, liam neeson, who played qui gonn jinn in the phantom menace (i cant spell his name sorry) plays Ra's al Ghul in batman begins, and Mark Hamill, who is known for his role as luke skywalker, is the Joker's most famous voice actor, funny how the world works huh?
The bottom line is that Ra's al Ghul is ARABIC for The Demon's Head and if you ask anyone who speaks arabic they will tell you that it's not pronounced "raysh". For some reason the creator of the character pronounces it raysh which is sort of a mixture between the arabic (Ra's) and hebrew (Rosh) word for head. But at the end of the day it is an arabic phrase and should by pronounced the arabic way: Ra-uhs
Yes he did Jon Irenicus, and made him into possibly the greatest game villain of all time. "Ahhh, the child of Bhaal has awoken. It is time for more...'experiments'... The pain will only be passing; you should survive the process..."
@StarFoxEternity No... if you look at it again, it's talking about Talia, and it says "SHE likes him too", and it's put over a scene of Talia kissing Batman. They were referencing Talia, Ra's daughter there.
there's no plausible way to fit immortality and super powers into the Batman movies that Nolan made. With a movie like Superman Returns it was acceptable because the world he was in was reinvented to encompass him and his powers, however Nolan hedged the entire film in our reality making it impossible to do that. Could you really have taken someone seriously if they looked EXACTLY like Ra's? Look at what happened to the previous movies, the "powers" killed the film. Nolan saved Batman.
@PrairieDawgStudios I actually like what Nolan has done with Bane. With the eyes of his mask uncovered, you can see him react to things and form facial expression-harder to do with the comic book mask. And by making it a gas you negate the whole "pull the tube out" scenario we have seen in so many other media. Beyond that, I have faith in Tom Hardy to make Bane a menacing and intense villain.
Bane and Ra's Al Ghul are the most overshadowed underrated villains in Batman. My Favorite Villain is indeed Bane. But I also really like The Riddler,& Two-Face.
@dkupke I don't think the Joker hates Batman, in fact there are many times where Batman is nearly killed and the joker won't allow that person to do it. "I can't kill you cause your just too much fun." But then with the Joker you never know.
Well, in the episode when he's captured they take his belt (see, he's not wearing it) and shirt cuz Batman like to hide stuff all over. Ra's said to leave the cowl on as a "badge of honor".
The Ras from Batman Begins is a lot different than the original one. If you notice in the end of Batman Begins it never states he is dead so maybe he'll show up in a later movie because after all he is immortal
Talia Al Ghul is gonna be in The Dark Knight Rises. Joey King (Yes, that is her name) just came out and said that she'll be playing a young Talia Al Ghul which adds even more fuel to the rumors of Marrion Cottilard playing a duel role of Miranda Tate and Talia Al Ghul. Not to mention, Joey and Marrion look very much alike.
3 different ways to say Ra's. Which is the right one? I'm guessing "Raysh." I like that way the best. The Dark Knight trilogy says "Rozz." And this says "Rayz." WTF?! LOL. Anyway, great video! Ra's is the best Batman villain second only to The Joker, imo! :).
Both are technically correct as far as "head of the demon" goes. The twentieth letter of the alphabet is pronounced Resh and came to have a similar meaning of "head." However, since it's a name (a proper noun) and the creator says Reysh, then it is Reysh. Just like those silly people who name their kid Syphilis and insist it's pronounced See-FILL-yus are correct, because it's a proper noun.
It's probably best that it they change Ras Al Ghul a bit in Batman Begins because Ras in everything else is Arabic and since Batman Begins came out during the Iraq war. Having a the white american guy be the good guy and have the Arabic guy be the bad guy probably wasn't the best idea at the time.
I like that idea for a different reason. I kinda see Luthor as the ultimate villain, powerful in many different ways where Al Ghul is supposed to be the ultimate justice.
Um , it`s Dark Knight Rises and the proper Arabic pronunciation is indeed "Roz" . "Raysh" is a mispronunciation the Animated Series and Later Adaptations used and is based on an outdated Hebrew-influenced form of Arabic that fell out of use in the 16th Century and subsequently was kept alive only by Western stereotypes of the Arabic language . In The Comics , Ra`s was born in the 17th Century .
Yeah, but sometimes I wonder why he is overshadowed by The Joker as the # 1 elite villain. Now I understand why. It's because of what you said. Now Two-Face knows Batman well, too.
the guy who trained batman, right, used the guy at the start of the film as a decoy basically, to protect himself, so he chose to under a different name when Batman meets that guy near the end of the film, he is introduced as Ra's Al Ghul, so therefore batman now realizes that the guy is Ra's, and also realises that that flaming guy was a decoy hope that aint confusing
Still, he is a mentor to Bruce for a large amount of time. For a long time it looks like he's actually good, until we eventually see his cold-blooded side. Outside of the destroying cities thing, the other idea was that he viewed killing as justifiable, and Bruce viewed that as separated him from the criminals.
How can you not like her? There's a kind of permanent sadness to her, because her heart is being torn in half. Unlike Catwoman, she can't stop who she is.
Well in The Comics and Animated Series , Ra`s did help train Batman in swordsmanship as he did in " Begins ". Ironically , while Ra`s never called Batman " Detective " in The Film and its Video Game Adaptation ( Understandably as that aspect of the Batman Character was deliberately downplayed in favor of the "Crimefighting force of nature " aspect which had never been fully adapted to Film before ), his Begins Cover ID Henri Ducard trained Bruce in Detective work in The Comics .
I said pronunciations like " Raysh " have not been used in The Middle East for many many years . So , O` Neil and the Animated Series may use the canonical pronunciation according to DC execs but Nolan used the Real Life Arabic pronunciation .
Savage, he dosen't need the pits to stay immortal, Ras's story is ussally tring to find a new pit or a new sorce of imortallity in the episodes I've seen him in, and he ussually messes with a force bigger than him
Actually , only one woman totally unfamiliar with Arabic pronounced it "razz" as a tongue-in-cheek thing . Everybody else in The Film prounced it " roz " which is the proper pronunciation .
@dkupke That is true. And the rumor splits: it also states that Miranda Tate will be revealed to be Talia Al Ghul. I hope Nolan takes a break from all of his "Realism" and makes Ra's come back with the use of the Lazarus Pit. I find that Christopher Nolan has ruined Bane; he will make Bane's mask release as gaseous anesthesia to render him invulnerable to pain. It's so sad when people re-make villains and make them look good, but they ruin the purpose of them.
Ras or Ra's depending on who you follow is a great character kind of like a one man Illuminati at the same time the greatest assassin known to man I really liked how Batman Begin's expanded on it and kind of made Ra's a new mystery to him that could be exploited later because what if IT'S NOT an immortal being but just people inheriting the title of Ra's but at the same time maybe he is an immortal being
Well it's kinda complicated. In the current comics (which I'm not too pleased with), it was revealed that Talia and Batman have a son: Damian Wayne. However, it hasn't been flat out stated that Damian is Batman's kid just yet because they did this plotline before. The previous writers, however, confirmed that the story wasn't canon. So basically, the current writers have taken a noncanonical story and turned it into a plausible canon story. We'll know for sure once the current comic ends though.
@kevindiesal actually, no. rachel was the one who dealt with him most. batman might have been set on fire and scared the crap outta crane, but Ra's ended up bein the ultimate enemy that movie. he was in charge of crane the whole time, so yeah.
@DarkSkar7 Agree. Hell, Tim Burton doesn't know much about Batman when he made the 1989 film. Nolan is the only guy behind making a Batman movie knows more than the previous director. Batman Begins influenced by Year One, TDK-The Long Halloween (mix with The Killing Joke), TDKR-Knightfall and The Dark Knight Returns. Nolan knows his Batman quite well.
It may say that in the "ultimate guide" but the word "ra's"(رأس) in arabic means "head" and al ghul means ghoul, which, in arabic, is the term for demon. So technically Ra's Al Ghoul literally means Head of the Ghoul or demon.
Unlike other villains, Rhas doesn't hate Batman-he actually has enormous respect for him and has expressed regret that they can't see eye to eye and work together. In a way he perhaps see's Batman as the son he never had-or wishes he had.
I just heard the terrible news about David Warner. May he Rest In Peace. He did such a wonderful job voicing one of the greatest Batman villains.
in every ras al ghul episode i wait for the moment when he calls batman "detective". THE WAY HE SAYS IT ITS SO EPIC!
Rest In Peace David Warner as Ra’s al Ghul
Ra's al ghul is truly underrated...he's really like a guy with clear intentions and a lot of wisdom
Paul Dini is a genius. He worded Ra's al Ghul the best!
Thus, I tend to still say Rahs al Ghul, instead of raysh.

ameliarating.tumblr.com/post/20442467957/house-of-al-ghul-pronunciation-guide
It's Ras Al ghoul
He gets mad in TAS if you say Raz or Rahs
RIP David Warner.
I always really loved Ras Al Ghul in the animated series. He was a really interesting and complex character, and the episodes with him were always so fun to watch. I also adored the actor that played him in the movie. He was amazing!
PantherMistress88 which actor you mean Liam Nesson who played ras algul in batman begins?
My choice to play Ra's al Ghul is Hugo Weaving.
I always loved Al Ghul because he was much different than other Batman villains before, he came off like a James Bond villain, which writer Denny O'Neil intended
Makes you wonder who is Batman's true arch-enemy: Ra's al-Ghul or the Joker
Also given how the comics are turning out anyone want to bet we might be calling Talia Al-Ghul, Talia Wayne soon
Ra's Al Ghul: One of the most underrated Batman villains ever.
And to think that Andrea Romano considered Christopher Lee (RIP) for the role of Ra's al Ghul before David Warner was cast.
Still can't believe Ra's voice actor is from Manchester, England!!!! :-D
Great character with a perfect sounding voiceover.
Strong, intelligent and immortal; Ra's Al Ghul was my favorite Batman villain.
The Devil's Head... Ras is truly an unique villain: He's never allied with any other villain, in the animated series at least, he's more or less immortal, and as mentioned in the video, he doesn't really spend much time in Gotham. Thanks for the video.
2022 RIP Kevin Conroy =Batman
2022 RIP David Warner = Ra's Al Ghule
The way they drew he does look like a demon, he's one of my favorites he's evil yet fascinating.
I just love how batman is shirtless . but he keeps the cowl on
But they already know who he is what’s the fucking point
Asher sorry for late response it’s because Ra’s respects him and what he does
Best comic book villain ever. Ra's al Ghul 2012!
Ras is the most realistic villian (guess that's why they used him in Begins).
In a way I almost want him to win because he doesn't see himself as a villian, he only wants to save the world.
Connor Coulson in the nonlons trilogy he was Bruce Wayne’s mentor
He also dose the voice of Nergal from Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy and he's also the narrator for Winnie the Pooh
My favorite Batman villain, besides The Joker of course!!
My top 3:
1.Joker
2.Ras al Ghul
3. Hugo Strange.
I read on TV Tropes that voice director Andrea Romano's first choice for Ra's al Ghul was Christopher Lee. However, according to Romano, it would have been "too difficult" to have him play a recurring role in the series due to him living in England at the time.

i remember this episode, very wicked cool.
Rha's is a unique amongst the rogues gallery in that he does not hate Batman; in fact, he greatly respects and admires him, and he is actually quite sad that he and Batman can't see eye to eye.
He totally looks like Doctor Strange
Christopher Nolan could learn how to pronounce Ra's al Ghul's name from this.
@Arak Drakoniz Christopher Nolan`s English and there are more people of Arabic descent in the U.K. than the U.S. Also, the Arabic is Ross or Ra-as. The Hebrew is Resh or Rosh.
ONe of my top fav dc villains.
I think as far as pronunciation goes between Ross Al Ghul and Raysh Al Ghul goes it's one of those Tomato Tomahto things
Technicality, Ra's is immortal because of the pit and Savage not only want to rule the world but to destroy humanity as well while Ra's al Ghul is sometimes seen "cleansing" the world by destroying humanity mostly Gotham.
fashionlady27 not to mention destroy other countries who don’t use rewnable energy
that was a great episode. The two Batmen fight together.
I'll always remember Ras holding his daughter above that bubbling pit and laughing manically-
For some reason, thats my strongest memory from the animated series.
Has anyone noticed that when we see the "Batman the animated series" staff being interviewed that the characters behind them look very similar to that person?

Not to mention the actor for Ra's was so god-awesome in his lookalike appearance.
my favorite batman villain ras is so epic

when i was a kid, the Ra's episodes scared me most.
this guy had to be one of the most awsome villians ever
Yes he did Jon Irenicus, and made him into possibly the greatest game villain of all time.
"Ahhh, the child of Bhaal has awoken. It is time for more...'experiments'... The pain will only be passing; you should survive the process..."
I love Ra's; he's the ultimate anti-villain
Ra's is one heck of a scarey villain who always comes back to life. He's like Freddy or Jason. Or worse - Chucky!
@StarFoxEternity No... if you look at it again, it's talking about Talia, and it says "SHE likes him too", and it's put over a scene of Talia kissing Batman. They were referencing Talia, Ra's daughter there.
I love how they capture batman and take his shirt and cape...but they leave his mask on

Anyway, great video! Ra's is the best Batman villain second only to The Joker, imo! :).
The reason they pronounced its "rash" on the show is to avoid tying the character to any specific nationality
My top elite villains: #1 The Joker, # 2 Ra's Al Ghul, # 3 Two-Face # 4 The Riddler, # 5 Bane, # 6 Mr. Freeze, # 7 Scarecrow, # 8 The Penguin, # 9 Poison Ivy #10 Clay-Face, # 11 Killer Croc, # 12 Harley Quinn. What do you think?
I agree on that one. I liked him better than the other villains, except the joker.

Catwoman better not see this or Bruce will be in trouble.
Nolan did mention it. At the party Ra's says to Bruce "Is Ra's Al Ghul immortal? Are his methods... supernatural?"
The music of the video is just fucking epic
I like that idea for a different reason. I kinda see Luthor as the ultimate villain, powerful in many different ways where Al Ghul is supposed to be the ultimate justice.

'The guy who trained batman' (played by Liam Neeson) was always ra's al-ghul. He used the other guy to hide his identity.
the guy who trained batman, right, used the guy at the start of the film as a decoy basically, to protect himself, so he chose to under a different name
when Batman meets that guy near the end of the film, he is introduced as Ra's Al Ghul, so therefore batman now realizes that the guy is Ra's, and also realises that that flaming guy was a decoy

Ras is one of the three Batman villains who lived to appear in the Batman Beyond series...if you can call what he did "living", right?
You displease me, detective.
@kevindiesal actually, no. rachel was the one who dealt with him most. batman might have been set on fire and scared the crap outta crane, but Ra's ended up bein the ultimate enemy that movie. he was in charge of crane the whole time, so yeah.
@SorceressZila Kudos for the excellent danny phantom reference.
Thnx everyone, for answering my question :)
That is so grown-up and complex for children
@DarkSkar7 Agree. Hell, Tim Burton doesn't know much about Batman when he made the 1989 film. Nolan is the only guy behind making a Batman movie knows more than the previous director. Batman Begins influenced by Year One, TDK-The Long Halloween (mix with The Killing Joke), TDKR-Knightfall and The Dark Knight Returns. Nolan knows his Batman quite well.
thumbs up if you think ra's al ghul should be the main villian for the next batman game
This is nothing like Ras Al Ghul is portrayed in Batman Begins.
It may say that in the "ultimate guide" but the word "ra's"(رأس) in arabic means "head" and al ghul means ghoul, which, in arabic, is the term for demon. So technically Ra's Al Ghoul literally means Head of the Ghoul or demon.
@SayVarRee The Arabic reads راس الغول which would (in modern stardard arabic) be pronounced 'Rah'z al Gool". Like they did in Batman Begins.
liam neeson was was, the guy who died in the fire pretended to be ras in case people tried to kill him.
they didnt make him immortal because Nolan wanted to make his movies as real as possible while still keeping the feel.
Or even worse. "rash"! Yeah, beware the evil Rash for he will make you itch yourself to death. XD
