I use a block simply to get some elevation and a solid position. We've got nothing but sand here, so if you're chopping directly on the ground, you can get a lot of movement on the round. Putting it on another round, preferably a larger one, disperses the impact force more, gives you a lot less moving around. Other than that, being a bit taller, a block just means less leaning over.
    Thanks for the insight Buckin!

I have been using a 16lb Walmart special splitting maul for the last 12 years, on a splitting block, It about rattles my bones apart. Got a nice 8 lb fiskars splitting maul, what a Cadillac of a difference. I will have to try a shorter block now after watching this video. I do the slow split through out the winter, keeps me busy, and makes winter go by faster. Thanks again for the video...

I had always split with a maul, oak & hickory no block handling the wood as little as possible. I was working for a guy and he borrowed a splitter, That thing was 3 times the work. Had to handle every block several times, bending over and over, listening to an engine running. It just made me miss the peaceful quiet and lack of challenge and learning how to pay attention to the natural cracks and knots when it comes to splitting wood. Splitters have their place but aren't the only way.

If, I need a solid surface, like in the spring when the ground is soft or whatever, I use a half sheet of 3/4 plywood. I drilled a hole and tied a leash on it so I can drag it to the rounds. I also made a skid with a tire on it for the smaller stuff. That also has a leash to drag around. Make everything mobile.

Especially with them beautiful bits😍 my back doesn’t like picking wood off the ground so I really like using an old tire bolted to the top of my block. Round gets split then I put it right on the wood pile. No more picking off the ground and chasing strays👍 I hope you give that a try! you’ll need a tractor tire for the size of rounds your dealing with💪 stay strong friend!

Love the chopping block, small and solid, big fat round, laying on the ground, giving resistance to the mighty blows, striking the wood, there it goes, not every man knows, the power of the chop, when the axe begins to drop, you just don't want to stop, the forged metal bit, through the wood it will split, watch how you hit, without a chopping block.
Buckin has a great freeform style of splitting, he knows his Douglas Fir very well.
    Don't need no block.
But for us pedestrians who don't heat with wood and are lucky to split/workout with an axe every once in a while, i highly recommend a nice, low, large, solid block to blast into. 🪵🪓

On the contrary I also never thought of handling the material more than needed..... GREAT point. I practice this at work why not here. Maybe there's a way to buck chopping blocks along the way. Major 🔑 factor for improving splitting outside of the block height to consider
keeping the Angle of your maul/axe edge perpidicular to the block your splitting!
You will add power with a longer swing with wood closer go ground Only if you maintain solid impact angle. what I mean is if you don’t do some compensation you’ll end up striking wood almost slipping off it losing power
A fan & agree with him but important note for me at least

I find that if I keep the bit of the axe toward the edge of the round that the wood splits easier. A lot of people want to split toward the center of the round. If you work around the round and take pieces off the sides until the round is small enough to split across the center. You see where it took several blows to split it across the center, if you worked around the edge each one of those swings would yield a chunk. I learned this method from working with hickory. Let a small piece of the bit hang over the edge. If you make a solid blow in the middle of the round it almost never yields a viable split. Some hardwoods can be split with a hand axe, but the majority require a full size axe. Get yourself some hickory and give it a try. Some hickory is straight grained but the majority of it is some of the toughest wood you will ever split. There are other woods like locusts that can be unforgiving and so sinewy that they are very tough to split. That sinewy wood burns the best in my opinion, especially the hickory. There are more btus in a cord of hickory than any other wood. Locust burns hotter but hickory burns longer. Cheers.

    • @thedillestpickle
      @thedillestpickle Рік тому

Didn't know that about Hickory. There is no Hickory where Buckin' lives. He's blessed with big tall trees with straight grain that split beautifully. Midwest and east coast has more deciduous and is hard to split. At least that's been my experience on the coast in BC vs here in Ontario.

A maul is the only way to split firewood. Axes are ok, but require much more effort and time. Axes are for chopping, mails for splitting.

Prefer a higher block for a few reasons:
Like to strike the wood when the axe is near to horizontal, axe energy is in the vertical. When it's too low, the axe begins it's swing toward you; a few times it's followed through to my feet or shins...
Also depends so much on the type of wood; pine is easy peasy lemon squeezy - try splitting something tougher, like Acacia in Italy...

Where do I find a splitting ax, all the spots I’ve checked only have chopping axes. I normally split with a 6lbs maul. I use the flick technique with the maul and works great!

You’re right Buckin!!…imagine how wonderful this world would be if we all treated each other with LOVE and respect.
LOVE (everything good) destroys sin (everything bad).
P.S. I’d LOVE it if you would please consider my plea to purchase one of your hand-made bullet axes 😬. I want to split firewood more than I don’t want to split firewood!!
Looking forward to meeting you at Bunyan!

Billy Ray, I heard a prophetic word from Neville Johnson (passed away 9/1/2019). The Lord took him into Queen Elizabeth's bedroom in the middle of the night, which must be 5-8 years ago now. God told Neville to warn her to not allow Prince Charles to become king. I'm waiting to see if she heeded God's advice. Many blessings to you and your beautiful wife.
