Amazing footage of a small club show with a totally unique setlist. Some of the show wasn't taped because Otto (taper) got up to sing "Trapped Under Ice" at one point. After the cut, he films the rest of the show on stage.

@Daniel Rodriguez and hit the light !!
it is so weird to see metallica playing a gig in 1989, just like they used to do in 1981.
They did a whole summer tour like this if I remember.
If Metallica were a bar band
This seems more like a party than an actual show. Im into it !!!!
This party is the shit!! Man I wish I was born 15 years earlier (I was born 1993)
I feel like they’re only doing it cause it’s a small venue so they don’t have to play up to they’re high standards
This is great!
That was Metallica....was😥
Looks like they had more fun here than in Seattle lol
1:17:22 hahaha James
"hey play trapped under ice"
...
"trapped under your mom"
K. Hall oof
K. Hall Nice !!
And than ^Escape^ from the mom
rekt
ur mom

James was truly at his peak. His meaty YEAH's required little to no effort
89 was T H E fucking year for that.. he sure had it in 91 and maybe 92 too but that higher pitch squeeky kinda voice was at its high that year..
Art Vandelay what do you mean by higher pitch squeaky voice? Do you mean like how he’s sound when he’d sing the “oh please god wake me” part in One?
@@bandolierboy1908 basically the higher parts, there are many examples of that, take songs like breadfan etc, it got a nice screeching quality to it
Bryce I love you
@@Samford_ Same feelings here.
this is the most unique metallica gig i've ever seen
If you pause the video at exactly 0:10 or 0:11, you can see my uncle Kirk. He’s the guy kneeling down. And that’s his best friend Jim with the black short sleeve shirt second in line leaning against the wall. Sadly my uncle passed away in 2008. I miss him a lot still.
Jack Jenkins that’s badass man!
sorry to hear bout the death man! all metalhead cheers to him!
Awesome! And not awesome! I probably would have wrecked stuff with him!
Kirk and Jim/James? Haha! Rest in peace to your uncle bro. That's awesome that he got to see this show!

HOLY SHIT
1:03:17 *L I F E I T S E E M S ! ! !* _...will fade away_
Damn, that was one of the funniest shit I've ever seen James do🤣 Thanks for the time stamp👍
1:03:18 *LIFE IT SEEMS* will fade away
Wish James did funny shit like this still
GameOfInches he does funny stuff, but it’s less common, which can make things even more funny since we won’t ever get used to it lol
Jason Newsted is such an underrated bassist
And an amazing metal backup vocalist
Well , compare to Cliff ?? Not much of contest really ! Good but nothing special
@@ralphdarc3094 Without Jason we never listened Blackened and for me that's special.
But ask yourself why? The answer is there, and it does justice (no pun intended)
4:50 "The metalization of your heart and soul through the mist and the madness..." Jason was hilarious.
Thats Metal Militia
1:13:00 That kid had me in tears
What the hell was he saying?🤣
I was at this show. My brother worked the soundboard for a company called Bell Sound out of Newport, DE at the time. The sound on this video doesn't capture the mayhem that Metallica created that night. At one point I went across Main street from the no longer there Stone Ballon and it was so fucking loud outside that you couldn't hold a conversation with someone next to you. The one downside was that the bathroom was covered in puke, but that was how most nights ended at the old Stone Balloon. Thanks for posting this, until I stumbled upon this all I had were memories of this incredible evening.
Dude you fucking RULE!!!
Phantom Lord performed during justice tour... dreams come true
Ride The Lightning performed during Black Album tours
Трифон Покрышкин sadly it never happened
the band performance on this song really sucks
metal militia on damaged justicd
I legit came here to listen to it
1:10:33 Best guitar solo ever
0:31 I love how Jason just doesnt give a shit and the camera zooms in and he’s just chilling in the background 😂
Jason came into a tough position. Cliff was the leader of the band, the oldest member, and they moved to San Francisco just to get Cliff into the band. Cliff was also, at least, 10 times the bass player of Jason. Metallica was forced to get a new bass player before they were mentally ready... so they took a punching bag. Jason ended up taking the beatings and gaining a voice in the band. Unfortunately his voice took them in the wrong direction and resulted in some of the worst albums Metallica put out, Load and Reload. He left before St. Anger (clearly the worst Metallica album) and didn't write any of the songs, but his influence was there. Since Rob joined the band Metallica has really turned things around, hope they can put a few more albums out before they hang it up.
@@mikehauncho4874 what you mean with " Unfortunately his voice took them in the wrong direction and resulted in some of the worst albums Metallica put out, Load and Reload " ??? If i understand you well it was not Jasons fault Kirk and Lars wanted to make a record like that 2 album ... they wanted to try something new , like kissing each other ... Jason was the most Metahead in that Period only Lars & Jaymz ego didn´t let him to show what he has got ... they pushed him in the background he hadnt done to much to change the "metallica sound" ... Jason left the band ´cause when he get in the band than was only music matters ... but in baltimore in 2000 Metallica played very shit you can hear no more warming up or rehersal befpre the show their ego was in the sky and just got out and pissed on the crowed not birngin the level what they gave before ... Jason leaving was the best for the band ´cause so at least they realised where they are heading and tried to get back to the track ...
Jason was and still is the only living member of Metallica with an ounce of integrity by keeping a level head.
@@mikehauncho4874 I don't think Jason had as much influence as you think. It seems like James and Lars were the masterminds and anything that happened went through them first. Can't pin it on Jason
Mike Hauncho what the fuck have you been smoking? Delusional prick.
45:07 I love James. This is gold
shit yeah!!!
Holy shit he could use his kid voice
*BOW DOWN TO THE PHANTOM* _LlLoOOrRrDdD_
he even says oh yurrr" like 66samus would like 30 years later
1:37:05 holy shit, james is a beast on drums
1:14:00 Jason face to face with Jason :0
*insert spiderman meme here*
Lol is like Jason but with a little bit of more muscle
Jason proud of him
James voice was so brutal during this period. If only it stayed that way.
There's no way that James could keep that brutal voice for 30 years
eniatsuM evaD that’s what made it great.
He always sounded great in smaller venues...
That’s why he blew his voice out
Believe it or not James can still do it but only for a short time. it doesn't sound the same of course but its there.
a show this loose and intimate in '89 is kind of an anomaly, i think this is my favorite met show ever recorded
dad_disrespecter420 just watched this for the first time and I agree
I used to go see see their side band Spastic Children back in the early 80s at a small dive club in Berkeley called Ruthie's Inn when Cliff was still in the band. Their performances were this loose and a blast.
2:56 Enter Dave Mustaine
1:10:31 "Wanna hear some Megadeth"
No way dude that is clearly Jeff Hanneman
Nahh. Its Triple H.
@@PsychoMetalKid You just couldn't agree with Simeonov, could u? I saw a guy walk past that looked and walked like Mustaine. That's it Kid !
It’s his kid with Ellefson
I was there that night and the 16 times I've seen Metallica since '85, this gig was the best ever. I've seen hundreds & hundreds of metal shows since 1983 and this night will never be topped. I could write a book about this night.
JrGolly well... write it.
was just about to write that this might be the best concert ever on paper: Metallica anno '89 in a small club. Surreal. Glad to hear it lived up to my expectations
Seen Metallica in '85 with Cliff Burton on bass in Toronto (open for W.A.S.P). He blows away Jason Newsted the wanker who plays with a pick 😪
Kickass man!!!
if they tried to play in newark now there would be chaos
Club show in 89' - Amazing and incredibly rare - Thanks for uploading!
My Mom's cool as hell, younger co-worker took me to see Metallica during this awesome tour. I was 12 and totally geeked out pretending we were on a date. She was 26 (happily married to a non-metal head???) and saw me as the little kid that I was...still a great memory!
2:57 Dave Mustaine enters in and says : Kirkie baby, go! I'm back.
No but seriously who the fuck was that and why does he look so much like Dave
He looks like Triple h
Looks nothing like him man
I've seen many Metallica's concerts on youtube...this one is by far the best one...a time machine to go back at that time...
This might be the coolest Metallica show I’ve ever watched online
For the Damage Justice Tour, Metallica played ALL 50 STATES!!! These days they play nearly every country in Europe but just a handful of U.S. dates.
I’m from Delaware, and I’m pretty sure this is the only time they have played in this state.
@@PeacefrogTV yep. And they need to come back. I live in Newark Delaware right where they played live about 5min from the venue but now it’s a restaurant 🙄
Amazing footage of a small club show with a totally unique setlist. Some of the show wasn't taped because Otto (taper) got up to sing "Trapped Under Ice" at one point. After the cut, he films the rest of the show on stage.
Nooooooo trapped under ice was the one song I really wanted to see
I was at that gig.
damn man why taper simply doesnt go onstage with the camera turned on?
they played trapped under ice so rare and he stopped filming it... why... WHY!?
John Peterolff Was this a warm-up gig before the actual tour?
What a feeling to have been there, seeing Metallica in their live prime...in the local pub!
It was awesome.
Their prime? They were really good in that year but not good as 84-86 period.
yo my parents made me at this show
assjulio79 LOL
Good
Seriously?
Great place to conceive babies, indeed...well, not ideal, but sure MJ, beers & JB were flowing widely, you know...
Lucky.
1989 was a great year for thrash!! Especially Metallica! Saw the justice tour 3 times from 88 to 89!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
All i can say is "I WAS THERE"!!!!
That first fan on No Remorse had me dying. My respects...
1:30:06 "...some Flotsam and Jetsam?"
1:10:34
James: "Wanna hear some Megadeth?"!! lol
That was nasty. But really funny.
Lars started playing peace sells and kirk tried rattlehead
@@timonsteup2877 They were known for kidding around with other bend impressions and things like that...
@Cee Dub Vee HAHAHHAHAHAHHAH
This was how Megadeth really played and plays. Well done Metallica for showing us how crappy Megadeth is
Tuning room stuff is priceless! First time seen pre-modern-era preparations on camera :)
To be a fly on the wall! I love the crunch sound them guitars make! Whole show sounded amazing.
There’s something about analog that will always make what your filming seem more interesting. Less clarity allows for more imagination
1:09:01 "AGUA"
STAY HYDRATED
Like my comment to *LITERALLY DRINK WATER*
Agua panela con limón
I was at this show as my uncle was a Bouncer at the Stone Balloon....AMAZING show.
I'VE BEEN WAITING 6 YEARS FOR THIS FOOTAGE!!!! FINALLY!!!
THE GREATEST SETLIST OF ALL TIME!!!
1:12:51 I love how Jason just looks like he is thinking "what the hell".
1:13:15 James is just like "NOPE".
Then the next guy comes on and and you can see James worried for his job
Wow, this is great stuff man, big big thanks for this KEA-filled vid!
1:03:18 reason why james cant do high notes these days
LOLLLLLLLLLL
I was at this show!!! Thanks for posting this awesome footage of once in a lifetime show. Saw it 10 feet from center stage- was amazing!
This era of Tallica is pure gold, ty for the upload!!
Up to this point in my Metallica fandom, over all 30 odd years of it, the 85 Metal Hammer fest was by far my favorite Metallica performance ever, back when they played Disposable Heroes for the first time just before Puppets was released but fuck me I think this gig is actually just as good but for totally different reasons, not in terms of footage quality of course, because its far from it, but I reckon anyone who was actually there that night can count themselves very lucky, this is a real slice of Metallica history here Im glad they eventually shared it with us,
I was there that night and even the video here doesn't do it "Justice" as it was the most epic gig I've ever been to. The entire day of and night of this gig was magic and electric. I will never again see a better, more intimate gig than this night.
JrGolly - how did you get your ticket in? I imagine it wasn’t easy, or luck?
First and only time they ever gigged in Delaware! It was an awesome night!
This is incredible footage of them!
Awesome 👌thanks for posting!!!!
This is fucking gold!!!!! Thank you man for posting this! Jason is pure metal here and to this day. And the crowd? Having the time of their lives🤘🏼
The atmosphere is so chilly. I love these guys!
Hero for having this video or sharing
That's so cool to see them rehearsing the Kill Em All songs and play at a small venue when they're at their peak! Thanks for uploading this!!
53:13 beat the crap out of Seattle '89
Wow, something in 2013 when I was digging a lot I got to know about this concert, and there were even some tracks to listen to on the internet, but I never knew that the full video from the show ever existed. Thank you!
I even remember writing to Metallica webmasters to correct info on their website, becuse setlist archive had regular Damaged Justice setlist
Thanks God for uploading it!!! One of my top 3 shows ever done
It's amazing that they played as if they were in a big stadium when they were in a small bar
Thanks for posting this killer live vid. I would love to see them in a small club gig. Here at the peak just as AJFA album released.\m/
I was 2 years old on that date! And these guys rocked! Amazing my respect!
Wauw.. i love these vintage footage of the crowd in the beginning of this film
These days there is nothing to find near a veneu when a big band is playing en the old concerts where amazing and so bonding
Whoa! Cool footage of supreme awesome phase Metallica. Legends
I was at this show, it was AMAZING. STONE BALLOON in Newark Delaware, Main Street basically on the University of Delaware campus.
So great to see this again.
I've never heard Hit the lights played that fast in my life! Awesome!
1:09:19
Another James dance
this is sick we get to see a tuning room video from way back
That Lucky bastard at Am I Evil.... he plays the holy grail guitar..
Manu S. Real shit
This is AWESOME! Not seen this before.
Esto es una joya 💎 🤘🏻
88,89 were terrible years for me. The music I loved had a massive cult following, long before commercial success. Metallica were that band and their music helped to get me through the early trials and tribulations of life. By the time ‘Enter Sandman’ came out I had already worked out my direction in life
Best tour of my life, I saw 15 gigs from this tour. Queensryche to the Cult. They were on fire. Especially James🤘🏻
Creep, Bellz, Sanitation... One of my fav. shows ever!
I was at this show, Wrathchild America opened. Shanin Larkin's drum kit was about 6" from the front of the stage, close enough to reach out and touch. It was loud, and hot as hell in there....I still have 3 ticket's , 2 not used from this iconic show.....Lar's said on the radio that it was one of his favorite shows during that tour. They wanted to hit every state, and Stone Balloon was the only place to play in Delaware.
Love seeing all the old shirts there .
Had them all at that time.
Amazing stuff. Thanks. \m/
PURE GOLD!
1:17:22 Play trapped under ice!!! James response - I'll play trapped on your Mom lol !!
I love all the jams on this show
Right there...in this very moment...best band on earth.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn Kirk is in it man! Perfect!
"Gold "for the ears from start to end , bring us back to 89 . This is how it's suppose to be done .
I couldn't imagine seeing this show! It would be the Pinnacle! Wow!
Wow! Amazing!
Otto is a legend for this one. What a fucking show.
*LIFE IT SEEMS* _will fade awaaaaay_
it's a dream to see this show see the light!!!
Hard to believe this was almost 30 years ago. It's great to see it again on video. ( I was at this show.)
I saw them 4 months earlier in April in Dayton OH. Queensrÿche opened. Couldn’t hear for two days.
I was in Newark that night. Along with everyone else in Delaware. Insane it has been over 30 years ago.
It's one of the best I've ever seen, thank you!😍🔥
James - I love his sense of humor 😂😍♥️.Lars-😘 😂😂
Finally some new shit from 89... Thank you man!!!!!!!!
1:27 - still sounds better than drums on St. Anger
One of the best show they ever did, finally released on video!
Drink at it's highest, technicality and mastery of playing at their best ever, grief after losing Cliff strongest ever, and couple of weeks before writing the biggest heavy album of all time. To say this moment was special is like saying nothing at all. Damn...
:Epic
Damn this is a very unique show and location given the year and status they had already... Crazy party
When James sees that no one knows the lyrics to No Remorse, he gives a pissed look and starts singing the second verse himself.
2:01:22 this may be the very moment they realize half step down tuning was a good idea
