I love this scene so much. I always choke up when The Doctor stands in front of the Tardis and realizes River was right. He would become that hero that she described and that she knew. One day he would have whole armies turn and flee from just his voice and he would save the universe from ending. He would save Galifrey and become stronger, better , and more compassionate. He would love more deeply and soar higher than he'd ever know. It just gives me hope that no matter how hard life is now, if we could only see our future or meet someone from our future, they would describe us in such a magnificent way, we would hardly believe how great we'd become.

I really just love that River gets to be a mom. I mean she ends up taking care of not only her students...but also Donna's 'dream' children and CAL. River and the Tenth Doctor were experiencing everything in opposite directions. His first meeting with her is actually her last. And her first meeting with him is his last. They were going out of order. She was given a book of 'spoilers' with pictures of the doctor and the sonic screw driver of an unknown doctor regeneration, it was never specifically stated to be the 10 or the 11ths she just said 'You gave it to me'. Not to mention that her saying when she first met him he had '..a new hair cut and dressed up in a fancy suit' might suggest a different regeneration. Also the doctor may change but how many sonic screw drivers to you have floating around. Of course he's going to recognize his.
For some reason I imagined that when the Grand Intelligence went back in time to ruin the Doctor's future he put the cart of books some place where the Doctor would trip and end up not saving River but Clara went back and moved it to where the Doctor could see it and jump

I think the point was she can live with her friends in the library, where she would also have access to the history of the universe and all the stories with the Doctor in them, so she can revisit all these moments and enjoy them (she is also an archaeologist so this history of the universe will interest her very much). However, I don't know if you have seen the latest episode (The Name of the Doctor) but your concern is revisited and resolved.
Ironically, this happens in The Long Game. He keeps clicking for Adam to open his head, now wouldn't the tardis open and close its doors every time he did it?
Jaison Orchard Probably not, since the TARDIS is telepathic and can decide whether or not to open the doors. It doesn't just respond to snapping fingers like the brain interface.
Such a beautiful scene where the Doctor opens the TARDIS with a snap of his fingers. He's a new person in a way, this episode exemplifies the truth that " pain and loss...define as much as happiness or love..."

so because River "dies" in this episode that's why she is a "ghost" at the end of the season seven finally and convinces Clara that she need to save the doctor right?
tanner moore Yeah that was her data ghost. Which is confusing since she was a computer program yet psychically linked to Clara which I don't get. River said that the Doctor never visited her after this and he revealed it was because it was too hard for him to see her again to say goodbye. One thing that upsets me is I think that was her last appearance. It kinda felt like a goodbye to her character and she hasn't been mentioned since besides the brief mention in Time Of. I know she's dead but there's still all her past selves and if she encountered the 10th Doctor here they could easily have her encounter the 12th Doctor and not tell the 11th.
Yeah. I miss Rose, Amy and Rory the most of the Doctor's long-term companions. They left it open for Torchwood to return but haven't done anything with that in YEARS!!!
The same can be said about the occupants of the Library. She too could be freed in the same manner if only we could get someone to sit in that chair and repeat the process.
River Song is the best character. Doctor Who is a great show but I think for me it became a masterpiece when they introduced River Song. She connected the three Doctors over her lifetime(s). She will always be my favorite character in the whole show.
@upchuck69 This video already shows the way the Doctor thought to save her. He says "Future me had years to think about it, all those years to think of a way to save her." Which was by making the screwdriver with the data recorder that has her data ghost in it and giving it to her, knowing that his past self would figure it all out and save her by injecting her into the core of the library. That's the only way he can save her by putting her mind in the core.
According to Whographica, a book about Doctor Who made in 2015 by Whovians, they still count River Song as having "died" because on the dedicated page to episodes where everyone lives, this episode is not listed as one of them
One thing I was always glad of was that they decided to bring River back and explore her character more rather than just leave us wondering who she was. And they explored her character and role in the Doctor's life over many episodes too instead of just doing one big reveal like a lot of shows do. Sadly I think they're done with her character which upsets me.
Ah, but now we know that River can still be with the Doctor as witnessed by her being at Trenzlore- of course she did say Goodbye Sweetie this time, so perhaps she is done now.
One thing I wished they'd included in the 50th was any sort of allusion or reference to River. Even 10 just asking 11 "So about River Song..." and 12 just having too many emotions to say anything at all. It would have been more than enough of an answer for 10, since he naturally knows that The Doctor never shuts up. It would have been interesting at the very least since The Moment took on the form of Rose and 10 never actually saw her, but after all, 9 regenerated into 10 for Rose. But I think 10 would have had a good inkling by then that he and Rose were puppy love compared to what The Doctor would be with River Song. I imagine the prospect, for 10, would have been terrifying since he was the incarnation that knew best how it all would end.
I was at the bookstore today and I found a Doctor Who novel called The Legends of River Song. I guess its some of River's untold adventures both with and without the Doctor.
or it could be the diary of River. I'm only saying that because five thousand year old cave drawings were found with what looks like a Tardis with people standing around it
I think we will see River in Series 8 because we've yet to see the scene where the Doctor gives River his sonic screwdriver.... The sonic that 10 used to "save" River could be Capaldi's.... And I know we've seen him use Matt's from footage of the filming of Series 8 but that screwdriver might get destroyed like the sonic in the beginning of 5s tenure and he'll get a new one and the new one will be given to River... Or maybe it could be a sonic of a future doctor from an even further point....
I agree. We haven't yet seen River meet The Doctor for the first time and we haven't seen him give her the screwdriver. The River that said goodbye in The Name of The Doctor was the "saved" version. I ended up buying this screwdriver on Amazon this week... I'm expecting it to show up again. Maybe it'll be seen just once more. Maybe it'll be Capaldi's device.
There is an interesting thought of River coming back to life, her mind is still in the data core ( just as we saw in NOTD), so what if someone out there in time and space created an artifical body which looks exactly like River, then transfer her mind into it? Interesting concept there.....
The doctor wouldn't trust his name with an artificial river even if she was going to die. However I was thinking all those people got returned back to the library before they were saved. River is saved into the library maybe she can be returned to her body with a little bit of regeneration magic.
And because both RDJ and Moffat envisioned that Doctor Moon is the final regeneration of The Doctor, we can freely imagine that River got to spend the eternity with him - and he with her. After everything after her final, grand sacrifice and after his truly remarkable gesture of spending the whole 24 years with her on Darillium - they did not part ways, not truly.
The concept was first used by Russel T Davies with Jack Harkness (who was the face of boe). However, it was Steven Moffat who took this concept and made it a full fledged story arc.
"Everybody knows that everybody dies, and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think, that all the skies, of all the worlds, might just turn dark if her ever for one moment, accepts it."
and that was the day he became my doctor. who would turn armies around with a look and swagger back to his TARDIS, opening the doors with a snap of his fingers. The doctor in the TARDIS, next stop everywhere
Unless the Doctor in the anniversary episode is the half human Doctor from the alternate dimension and River shows up at some point (pre SITL) for him to give her a modified version of his screwdriver. Because if he were the 10th Doctor circa series 2 he would not know her or have any reason to give her a screwdriver. Which means she'll be obviously be back in Capaldi's run and we have most assuredly not seen the last of River Song. Plus we've still got the whole wife aspect to cover.
This episode deserves awards. This is the first episode of River Song. She didn't show up again for a long while, and her last episode, (to our knowledge) was toward the end of the 12th Doctor's time. That's one Hell of a plotline and I think Steven Moffat deserves more respect for that shit! But this scene. Words can't describe the genius of this scene. I don't remember what I felt the first time I saw this, seen it too many times. But I know that it must've been different than after seeing The Husbands of River Song. And that's... Incredible. It takes a gift to write like this. Or a time machine. But those don't exist now, do they?
Am I the only one who thought of the ninth doctor in the episode the doctor dances, I think that’s what it was called, when he says, “Everybody lives Rose, just this once everybody lives.”
I love the way he says 'you and me, one last run' it's like for that moment he really was her husband even though he doesn't know her yet
He may not know her yet, but he knows his future self does. "You whispered my name in my ear. There's only one way I would ever give someone my name. There's only one time I could..."

A bit of 9 in that speech. Love it.
This 2 part episodes are FILLED with future references. We didn't know then, but it's so emotional and fun to notice it whenever I rewatch them.
omg...SHE SAYS 'aren't I a CLEVER girl', Run you clever boy? Oh my Moffat how can you do these things? Props to you Moffat!!
According to Whographica, a book about Doctor Who made in 2015 by Whovians, they still count River Song as having "died" because on the dedicated page to episodes where everyone lives, this episode is not listed as one of them
'Everybody knows that everybody dies' 'but not everybody' ' not today' brilliant
0:29 LOL I KNEW IT while he was walking away I was like ummm doctor aren't u forgetting something?
I don't even know why I'm crying so hard, I didn't cry like this the first time I watched this episode. But now I am having all of the feels.
One thing I was always glad of was that they decided to bring River back and explore her character more rather than just leave us wondering who she was. And they explored her character and role in the Doctor's life over many episodes too instead of just doing one big reveal like a lot of shows do. Sadly I think they're done with her character which upsets me.
River's first thought after coming back: GOD DAMN IT, *insert Doc's name*, YOU CHEATED AGAIN!
Ah, but now we know that River can still be with the Doctor as witnessed by her being at Trenzlore- of course she did say Goodbye Sweetie this time, so perhaps she is done now.
Should be called: Everybody Saved~
Or The Doctor saves River Song, LIKE A BOSS.
next time his screwdriver breaks he needs to make a new mark6, and modify to the one in silence in the library.
I'm only saying that because five thousand year old cave drawings were found with what looks like a Tardis with people standing around it
Uh no. That's not what it is.
"Everybody lives, Rose. Just this once, EVERYBODY LIVES!"-9th Doctor (The Doctor Dances)
He went to the Singing Towers with her in a Minisode called "Last night". I think that's when he gave her the screwdriver.
He hasn't given her that screwdriver yet...
What do we say to the God of Death? 1:28
Theriot6592 Shaolan Lead Amen
Not today!
Not today!
Shame the show ended horribly :(
I think we will see River in Series 8 because we've yet to see the scene where the Doctor gives River his sonic screwdriver....
There is a mini-sode called First night and last night you should look up.
Jonathan Russo That's the problem, there's a continuity error because he doesn't give her that screwdriver.
Geoffrey Sorensen River met the Doctor for the first time in Let's Kill Hitler...
SP Murphy yeah man, me too!
And I'm wondering how and why the fuck is Clara there!
So many questions still remaining, love this god damned show.
I love the falling superman move
I'm glad River got her happily ever after.
There is an interesting thought of River coming back to life, her mind is still in the data core ( just as we saw in NOTD), so what if someone out there in time and space created an artifical body which looks exactly like River, then transfer her mind into it? Interesting concept there.....
+kylephantom4 " artifical body which looks exactly like River" You mean like the Teselecta?
Ábel Farkas
not really the teselecta cause thats a robot, but actual flesh that is created.
The doctor wouldn't trust his name with an artificial river even if she was going to die. However I was thinking all those people got returned back to the library before they were saved. River is saved into the library maybe she can be returned to her body with a little bit of regeneration magic.
+kylephantom4 Autons?
+kylephantom4 Like in the factory with the flesh I think it was called "the flesh" wasn't it ?
And because both RDJ and Moffat envisioned that Doctor Moon is the final regeneration of The Doctor, we can freely imagine that River got to spend the eternity with him - and he with her. After everything after her final, grand sacrifice and after his truly remarkable gesture of spending the whole 24 years with her on Darillium - they did not part ways, not truly.
Favorite monologue of the entire show.
The concept was first used by Russel T Davies with Jack Harkness (who was the face of boe). However, it was Steven Moffat who took this concept and made it a full fledged story arc.
It isn't over yet.
When Thanos snaps his fingers half the Universe dies,
When The Doctor snaps his fingers everybody lives.
I'm sure it's been said many times before, but the cover of the book at the end looks like the doors of the TARDIS.
So this is everyone when their phone is about to die
Not gonna lie I always have a tear in my eyes when I do really like something. This is one of the examples. Epicness overload!
Back then when doctor who was a masterpiece
1:30 when the score hits just right
I believe they published it on the DVD sets... I don't think it was aired on television.
In a mini episode the 11th doctor brings river to the singing towers of darillium so that means he should have a different screwdriver
The Doctor has mood swings like nobody's business
after watching the Husband of River Song you know how the Doctor got River memories...
I think I'm going to watch River's episodes in chronological order now. Probably will have to use TARDIS wiki to help me, though. XD.
Doctor Who is the only show that can foreshadow after the fact and do it flawlesly
"I'M VERY GOOD!" 💙
Am I the only one who thought of the ninth doctor in the episode the doctor dances, I think that’s what it was called, when he says, “Everybody lives Rose, just this once everybody lives.”
Even 2 months ago Moffat's plot began!
