Double meaning. The Doctor telling River she was always there when he needed her most!
You can tell that Peter was the only Doctor actor who had been married when filming River Song episodes. David's a lover, Matt's a boyfriend, but Peter brings pure married-for-decades husband energy. His chemistry with Alex is unmatched.
David met her once in the library unless she met 14 also.

If it was Matt Smith or David Tennant, that moment they both gaze into each others eyes, you could tell would be a kissing scene but Alex Kingston refused to do any kissing scenes with Peter, cause she said 'it'll be like kissing my dad', but the scanning bit, we all know, that the Doctor know it was they're last moment together, so he scanned her consciousness into the sonic's data bank, saving her in the library digitally
That's pretty funny. Alex is only 5 years younger than Peter but is 8 years older than David and almost 20 years older than Matt.
I'd happily kiss Peter Capaldi for free, much less get paid for doing it. But then my husband is 17 years older than I. I'd happily snog David or Matt as well though. 😘

Its still one of my favorite scenes of all time. I just got done re-watching that part 15 times. I know its just a TV Show and they're just actors but I get choked up every time I watch that scene.
"he's never noticed before..."
Capaldi has a perfect reaction to that. Surprise, not-surprised, touch of betrayal, curiosity, stubborn intent to sort that out at his next opportunity. Capaldi was so expressive with just his face during his interactions with River, all of them.
The look on his face when he finds out River fully believes he doesn't love her, just beautiful. Confusion and hurt and guilt all in one look.
Or as we say, “this bitch”
This episode gave us the most tender "Hello Sweetie," the saddest "Spoilers," and the most joyous "I hate you" "No you don't."
Also - "You took me to Darillium to see the Singing Towers." Ummm, he could have just brought her outside to see the towers when they crashed. Instead, he had a high-class restaurant built with a view to make sure that last night would be as magnificent as possible for her, and now I'm crying. He's saying goodbye to her, but doing it on his terms, complete with a 24-year night. Love these two so much!!
This is why my standards are high for men lol. Would they build a whole fancy restaurant for me? lol

I'm okay with this being their only episode, because it can't be topped. They got one shot, and they absolutely nailed it.
This was her last episode because she died, The diary filled up.
We got one episode, but they got 24yrs. And that means everything.
I wouldn’t mind a big fish tale or two with this duo. That was a long night on that planet.

You have to admit this ending and the "24 years" was the PERFECT ending to the doctor-river cycle of time.
I always believed this was the incarnation of him she knew the best even though she didn't recognize him at first...and the ending proved me right.
24 years together (it never says they spent it entirely together, but I think they did).
The extra sweet thing? They are there on Christmas Day, Which means on that planet specifically It is 24 years of Christmas.

And the reveal recontextualizes River's death scene, because 10 would immediately know from the choice of location that he was going to find loopholes to stretch things out as long as possible. Hence why he realized the sonic screwdriver was also a loophole.

River, dying in the library: “I remember the last time I saw you -the real you- you turned up on my doorstep with a haircut and a new suit…”
The little details like that make Steven Moffat my favorite writer.
The Doctor's face says "He's never loved me" always kills me. You can see him considering the failure he's made making River realize how loved she is.
Well, she's also kind of telling the truth. The Doctor was basically forced into the relationship and was really only "going through the motions" during the Smith era. Her love wasn't truly reciprocated. It's only now that The Doctor has finally gained some emotional maturity and had time to process things that he realizes that he *genuinely* loves River.
I suspect that the night on Derillium is ALSO when the Doctor and River get properly married ("domestic bliss on Derillium") and he actually tells her his true (real) name. Likewise, when River sacrifices herself in the Library she knows the Doctor before her will one day come to truly love her.

The Husbands of River Song is my favourite Dr. Who Christmas episode. River's journey coming full circle, the beautiful chemistry between Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston, his "Hello Sweetie" moment with her, River's speech of her undying love for the Doctor, Peter/The Doctor getting the chance to fanboy in the Tardis ... everything is simply perfect. 🥰🙏
Don’t forget the sonic, the sonic that saves her life, the sonic he uses to save her in the library
@@cynthiablackthorn The entire episode was foreshadowed during her introduction, she specifically said all the things that happened during her final moments with the Doctor when he saw her for his first time.
Watching the Husbands of River Song back-to-back with the Silence in the Library is the best way to watch bost episodes.

You know what gets me everytime? The theme of Silence in the Library as soon as he gifts her the sonic screwdriver. This lovestory is one of a kind.

Also, if you look, you can see the Doctor scanning River, which is how her consciousness was in the sonic screwdriver so that 10 could save her, it’s really amazing if you watch this episode followed by Silence in the Library
I just realized the Tardis was trying to cheer him up at the begenning. Maybe part of her strategy was to bring him to River to make him happy. So she dropped him off where River is.
Absolutely love how they brought river’s story full circle, from her first meeting, to how she fell in love to how the doctor sets up his older self to save her with her screwdriver
What a great character
I think this Doctor is the perfect one for River, however I'm aware that this couldn't be possible without Matt's Doctor, his adventures with River ended up in this mature regeneration that is finally able to say goodbye to her. Eleven didn't want to give up, not on her or Gallifrey, but Twelve finally accepted that goodbyes are ok. I'm guessing that happened after he accepted that Clara was gone for good, even if he didn't know who she was.
Everything ends and that's always sad, but Everything begins again too and that's always happy

10: The Man who regrets.
11: The Man who forgets.
I'd like to think that 12 is the Man who accepts.
It’s sad we saw her die in the wrong order, but I guess that’s the charm.

I absolutely love that River's line of "Showed up with a new suit." in Silence in the Library was reinterpreted to mean a new face.
I think it was "a new haircut"? Or both?
Well it WAS a new suit. And a new haircut. And a new face. So technically everything River said was true, she just missed out the face part.

I know how you feel. At least part of it is, for me, that I feel that he's referring to her as well as the towers. She is, after all, River SONG. And for him, she is there when he least expects her, but always when he needs her the most. That's my take on it, anyway.

It's interesting because, if I'm reading it right - River is equating the tower's to the Doctor too. "You can't expect a monolith to love you back" is an explicit comparison there so the towers could also refer to him. Which, if true, adds another layer. The Doctor is there, no-one knows why and how he has come to help, and by his side, not always but as a perfect compliment to his eternity, is a Song

For all his cringe and yikes and faults, Moffat was always amazing at holding a dozen threads together in one line of clever dialogue. He did it very often during his run but this is the most beautiful example by far, and Capaldi's delivery is perfect. It's absolutely wonderful.
the moment he "scans" her and the "24 years" bomb are my favorite moments from this special! it just brings everything together and actually gives them time together before River goes to The Library... i always get emotional when there's a River story but this was the perfect bookend to her story. Curse you, Moffat! you made me feel! lol

I could not stop smiling through it all. The inside joke that was this whole episode. Then when she finally realizes who he is; is hilarious cause of all the things she told him that she does behind his back.
Definitely one of the better episodes 12 is in. Sure they are all good in their own way but still.

The look in his eyes when she says “he’s never noticed before” 😆

The smile the doctor had at seeing River flustered is so charming and adorable!

It’s so hilarious seeing bits of 11th and 10 in this performance when he’s with River.
By far the best Christmas special of the revival series. Peter and Alex had amazing on-screen chemistry, and with him being 5 years older than her, she didn't come off like a cougar like she did with Matt Smith.
The little blink paired with the whispered “hello sweetie” always sends me into a fit of giggles, gets be every time love it
I always took it as him telling her how wrong she was, when she said he doesn't love her. It's always so sweet.
His speech about the towers! River thinks he's changing the subject and avoiding the hard topic. Then "There is a song".
Moffat, you brilliant man!
And yes, the chemistry between these two is off the charts. 🥰
That entire episode is the Doctor thinking, “what the f*? I’m literally throwing clues at her!”
I love this story line, this time loop love story and this is the perfect conclusion. The story of River and the Doctor was always one of two people meeting at the wrong times. One of them was always too young or too immature for the other. Until this episode, when finally both River and the Doctor were mature enough to accept that things had to end, but they could be together until things did. They finally met at just the right time.
One line i think people miss in this that hits hard when you go back and watch the Library is when River says "You save the day" and Doctor responds "Not always."
He knew though. He knew he would. And he couldn't tell her. "Everybody dies. But once in a while..."

As soon as he says Hello Sweetie my heart just dropped. The sonic we see in Library; River mentioning the haircut and suit; his line to her about that was perfect. Best Christmas episode yet....imho.

the fact that this episode is the end of the circle that goes back to the library makes me so sad. this really is a bittersweet episode for me.
Oh River. My favourite companion. Who would have thought that in her first appearance, her title song would reflect so much of her. "The Greatest Story Never Told" it truly was that on her debut!

It has been scanning her mind all the time she's held onto the screwdriver that was given to her.
I love the ending and how it gives them a happy ending though if you think about and moffat had said one evening rather than 24 years it would literally be one of the best departures ever

It was one night on the planet. Planets move differently. It was a cheat, but I appreciate the stuck to the letter, while still giving us some peace with her story.

My absolute favorite episode with the exception of the build up to “when a good man goes to war”. These two for me are the best doctor and river combination. I wanted more time with them.

I love this scene. I think the thing I love the most about it is it begins as him just describing the towers and the mystery behind them, and subtly turns into him describing _her._ The Song that's always there when he needs her the most. And he does this directly after she says "you can't expect a monolith to love you back." in reference to him, only for him to subtly compare _her_ to the Towers. He thinks she's just as much a monolith as he is.
Absolutely genius how it was brought full circle so spectacularly. To have started this journey at the Library, with what im assuming is very little clue of how it would pan out

I absolutely love when the doctor uses her own words to tease her when she made her big speech about him not caring for her, I find this type of interaction so adorable and I love it every time!!

Not gonna lie during this episode it was the 1st moment that I realized that even though she thought the doctir never loved her he really did love her in his own way and when capaldi heard her say what she said you could see the sadness and the confusion on his face that she never felt that he did.
“You’ll do that smug little smile and you’ll save the day” proceeding with sed smug grin when he’s about to drop the 24 year line, good stuff that is.
I’ve seen very little of this show in general but I still think River is one of my favorite bits of the things I’ve seen.
Absolutely Brilliant writing and storytelling Mister Moffat. You really hit the ball out of the ballpark in the last few scenes of this episode. Hopefully, he continues writing stories and bringing back his characters to this show.

The 12 Doctor's TARDIS is really the definitive new series interior :). Miss it.
12 and River are such a great pairing. One outing together, and it's near-perfect. I felt similarly when reading Lance Parkin's The Dying Days. 8 and Benny are wonderful together, and only have the one story (at least until Benny's Story in The Company of Friends). Leaves you wanting more, certainly!
It is a shame this was the last episode with river before she sacrificed her self in the library

Its just so hard sometimes to believe in love and the twist at the end hit my heart so hard, when I truly wished their night together could last forever and to have the final twist shown that Love endures, its just so heartbreaking to me because I know as I'll never have enough time to give my love to someone who'd ever love me that much.
And this (perfect) episode is why the Christmas episodes are so special. Not at new year! Hoping RTD brings back the tradition. You could just feel the Whovians together around the world watching with their families.
I loved this Xmas special. Husbands of River Song and Twice Upon a Time were the last good Xmas specials of Doctor Who. I miss River Song. Unlikely we'll see her again.

I am glad Alex Kingston got to come back once more as River Song. I really thought "Name of the Doctor" was the last ever time we would ever see River Song. I hope Alex Kingston will be apart of the 60th anniversary.

The best Christmas episode, & one of the best episodes of Who period. I think I have watched Husbands of River Song more than any other episode.

NuWho has given so many great moments. This entire episode was so well done. Humor, comedy, action, deep emotion with sadness, happiness, tying up storylines, and all within the good old wibbly-woobly-timey-wimey format.

A perfect farewell to the character (on TV at least).
River Song is one of the best of the Doctors companions and played brilliantly as shown.
