Adrian Pietkiewicz they probably had some kind of idea I reckon they made river to be this occasionally reoccurring character like she turned out to be. Like they wouldn’t have set up all this detail for nothing
The Vashta Nerada terrified as a kid and they still do, on some level. They are an enemy that can't be outfought, outwitted, outmaneuvered, outrun, or anything. You just have to hope you don't run into them and hope that if you do, they find a meal before they find you.
Not to mention the NV seem to be somewhat sentient. If they are animals and behave as such one could theoretically lure them in to a trap, if they are sapient then that's a whole other issue, you can try to reason with it but the likelihood is somewhat on the lower side to say the least.
I hated her. River explained the situation quite clearly, yet she was extremely rude to her. The only thing i like about her is her grandfather who is one of my favorite characters. But i hate donna more than daleks
i always thought donna was annoying, crass, and completely meanspirited for the sake of being mean. Here his future wife is having a heart to heart, heart broken and all donna can do after being explained everything clearly mind you, is be a bitch. It's like... okay donna, dial it down 2 notches and don't be yourself for once. Everything about her was like this and it really fucked with me watching this show
I think this is one of my favourite episodes because it presented an enemy that couldn't be defeated, something that all you can hope to do is outwit long enough to escape. That's what makes this episode so truly terrifying and suspenseful, for me at least.
this and midnight were the height of who fear for me. i never got more scared watching an episode than i did those three episodes. nothing in 11 and so far nothing in 12 even comes close to this.
What if you had a vacuum device like a dustbuster? I'm sure you could suck the vashta nerada up. You'll just need to seal it so they don't escape. Then they'll starve to death in there.
''Donna... You're Donna, Donna Noble... - Yeah, why ? - I do know the Doctor, but in the future, his personnal future - So why don't you know me ? Where am I in the future ? [River says nothing]'' Sorry, where can I go if my heart is broken ?
Ugh...the way River looks at Donna when she asks: "Well, then what about me? Why don't you know me? What happened?" I never noticed it until now...knowing all that I do about Donna and River and the Doctor. So heart-breaking, oh gosh.
+redraven24 The pain in her eyes, she never knew Donna, only what the Doctor told/tells her about her. I can only imagine the pain the Doctor feels when he has to take away DoctorDonna's memories, pretty much 'killng' that part of Dona. I think that must be one of the hardest things that the Doctor ever had to do. Donna was an equal for him, she didn't fawn over him, wasn't infatuated with him, she was his friend, as close to an equal as anyone could be, even before she became the DoctorDonna. Donna, in my opinion, is the best modern-day companion, because she challenged the Doctor, called him out when he needed it.
Greg Treadwell Donna is my favourite too. Her sass owned the whole relationship and brought out a different side of the Doctor. River and Donna are equal in my love. Donna for being, like you said, his equal without the romantic angle. A fiercely loyal friend that took no BS and enjoyed tackling new problems right along side of him. And River for having a strong romantic angle that was mature and not being so infatuated that she was afraid to call him out. She was fearless in her reprimands and fierce in her love and adoration. Two beautifully balanced female characters in my opinion. Broke my heart to see them both leave the Doctor :( And both 'dying' in order to save him too.
This makes me really sad because River knowing who Donna is means that the Doctor told River about his past companions at some point. There's a conversation to cry about :(
The pain he had to go through just to explain what he did afterwards. Imagine Rivers reaction when she realises those one companions she actually meets
2:33 ohhhhh as someone who loved DOnna that is some foreshadowing that hurts alot. River having been told about DOnna at some point clearly and that look was just like "I know your fate and im sorry" Feels massacred
In hindsight, this is sort of sweet because it implies that even centuries later in what must've been series 6 or 7A timeline wise, the Doctor was still upset enough about what happened to Donna that he must have grabbed River and cried himself out on her shoulder or something.
I love how he emphasizes how you can't stop the Vashta Nerada, by citing the weaknesses of some his other great enemies: "Daleks: aim for the eyestalk. Sontarans, back of the neck. Vashta Nerada..... Run. You just run.
Well.... There's no such thing as "Unstoppable". Except The Doctor. You can't stop The Doctor from running. Pause, maybe. Delay, probably. Postpone, perhaps. But don't confuse any of that with "Stop".
Austin Boylan No, no. Everything has its weakness. There's no such thing as invincible. The Doctor's the most feared being in the multiverse, and yet we all know he's not invincible. The more powerful the thing is, the more obvious its weakness is, though not necessarily the easier to defeat it.
Yeah I get what you're saying and all. No offense meant. It's just what can you do to stop the Vashta Nerada? The Doctor pretty much says all you can do is run.
***** I saw that and I was like, "Oh, the girl must've painted that." I knew it was a wolf and a blondie but I didn't realize it was Rose and Bad Wolf. XD
Coming back to this scene I think the saddest part is that Donna is so certain she'll be with the Doctor forever. She's my favourite companion for reasons like this.
i do like the fact that River looks at Donna as if she's just met a legendary companion that the doctor praises all the time but she never did get to meet. i also think that she would also have a similar reaction to sarah jane she would just look in awe at the legend.
"You're Donna! Donna noble!"I never understood why river should know her because she never gets to know donna later on but after rewatching all the episodes it totally makes sense! Of course River knows her because she is a timetraveller and off course she knows the storys/songs which are told/ sung about donna!I love this wibbily wobbly timey wimey... stuff! And it makes donnas leaving a bit more said.
At some point, the doctor told River about Donna and what happened to her. When River eventually encountered the Tenth Doctor and Donna, she was visibly moved when she realised who Donna was.
No there is no episode, but one can assume that over the centuries of knowing each other The doctor would share some of his stories with her. also as GirlSunny said, River was researching the Doctor during her days in Luna University, so she probably came across stories and songs about Donna (as well as other companions).
yeah, if you dig deep you can see three videos she made with her friends in primary school but seriously, she's a rare person in our time to have nothing about her on the internet especially since she was on TV i love watching old episodes, then pointing out one person and looking up everything they ever did everything that led up to their role in Doctor Who, and everything they did after....
I love the vashta nerada. They terrified me as a child. Made me afraid of the dark for about 2 weeks. Now, they just give me a thrill. There's nothing like an unbeatable foe.
3:30. That's classic Doctor. The way he lends weight to something he might only mention once. The way experience on his scale can make you creepy as hell and you never realize it. He tells people facts like most people tell stories around campfires. The universe is a big place. And a LOT of it is frightening. And it's /everywhere/.
I would LOVE to see the Vashta Nerada get brought back. They're just like the Weeping Angels, tapping into that primal fear in the back of your mind. In fact, they might be even worse. The Weeping Angels can only kill you. But what if the Vashta Nerada were to evolve and become even more deadly? Eating not just flesh, but thoughts and emotions and memories? They could consume the universe itself. The gnawing darkness. The Hungry Shadow. Definitely need to be brought back. :D
Nah, the Vashta Nerada aren't villains. They're a hazard at best. All they want is to live in their "forest". That they could be talked down shows the lack of malice. A villain would have pressed its advantage...or gone back on its word. Instead, they bargained quite readily. On the other hand...if someone imprisoned them...turned them into an unwilling tool, that could work. And in the end, the master mind ends up trapped with them as the Doctor and company depart. Oh, the Doctor would offer to save them...but they'd be so confident that they can control the swarm. They'd be wrong. Very wrong.
cak01vej Daleks? Cybermen? I don't know of too many reoccurring foes aside from those two factions. Still, the Vashta Nerada are probably one of the most dangerous things the Doctor has ever faced. There's no cool little gadget or loophole to exploit when the night itself wants to eat you. OH! EUREKA! I know exactly who would be stupid enough to make a weapon out of swarms of meat-eating shadows: Space Nazi's led by a the cryogenically preserved head of Hitler.
I wonder... could Vashta Nerada eat Daleks? Because if they only eat flesh then metal races like the Daleks and the cybermen wouldn't have to fear them and might try to control them.
What's most mindblowing to me is that Moffat must have known what happens to Donna, who exactly is River, what 11th Doctor is gonna be like, that River's last encounter with the Doctor priot to going to the Library will probably be her meeting his new face for the first time (the way she says "new haircut" kind of suggests she didn't actually mean a haircut), what River is gonna be like and what kind of relationship River and the Doctor are gonna have all before he could have written this episode...
Why has nobody commented on Alex Kingston’s beautifully broken smile when she watches the Doctor work? It’s an incredible moment in the brilliance of subtle acting!
Poor Miss Evangalista (although she isn't in the video) was trying to be helpful. She doesn't deserve to die. Imagine if the Vashta Nerada riped your flesh.
The thing is though, the Nerada would rip the flesh off you so quickly, you'd be dead within a millisecond. No pain. So in my opinion, the Nerada are the most humane enemies in the Doctor Who universe.
1Worluck I wouldn't exactly call a bloodthirsty, carnivorous swarm: *_humane_*. They're not making a conscious decision to make sure your death is painless...they devour you abnormally fast because of how many there are (not because they don't want you to suffer). They exhibit absolute-zero compassion, kindness, benevolence, or anything even remotely resembling a heart. So, no -- _humane_ the Vashta Nerada *are not*.
I know we're gonna see River Song again cos we're yet to see the scene where the Doctor gives her his sonic screwdriver... The one she uses in this episode doesn't look like Matt's so it must be Capaldi's screwdriver... Only explanation! That would prove that Capaldi will have his own sonic screwdriver!
Except that screwdriver was based off 10's, and we've already seen when 11 takes her to the Singing Towers. Odds are, 11 fixed/upgraded the one that got broken in the Eleventh Hour and gave it to her at some point before the scene in the Last Night short. Moffat's made it clear, if he brings her back, it'll be because it's important to the story, not because there was a plan to do so. Her story was neatly tied up at the end of the last season, so I don't think she'll be back any time soon.
It's really interesting how some of the greatest episodes seem to have the lowest special effects budget. In this one, they're filming in a library and the primary threat is a guy in a skeleton mask and a spacesuit. In Blink, they primarily film in an abandoned house while the characters are running from people in grey facepaint who canonically cannot move on-camera. They seem too simple to be scary or suspenseful, and yet the writing ABSOLUTELY sells it. "Limitation breeds creativity," I suppose!
it's two in the morning, I already and stupidly afraid of the dark, this is not what I should be watching considering this episode already freaks me out.
...BBC Studios, you misspelled the title of the video. "The Doctor Meets The Nashta Nerada | Silence In the Library | Doctor who" It's _Vashta._ Not _Nashta._
What really confuses me is that Moffat didn't ever revisit the Vashta Nerada in his entire run of Doctor Who. They're an amazing monster that is undefeatable. Rather than the doctor swinging his screwdriver around, he's forced to use his wit to stave them off for as long as possible.
River Song, very serious telling a story, sad. Donna: "What you talking about?! You just talking rubbish. Do you know him or don't you?!" Doctor: "DONNA! Quiet, I'm working."
Heartwarming that the doctor told river about past companions and Donna stuck to her mind but heartwrenching at the same time to see Donna’s reaction to this
I got over my fear of the dark, then I watched this episode. Well. Thank you, Doctor. He just doesn't want me to sleep. Can't let it get dark or these things will eat me; can't close my eyes or weeping angels will get me.
"Donna, you're Donna. Donna Noble ." imagine meeting the person that in the words of the person you trust most in the world is "the most important woman in all of creation". River almost blurred it out..
Best doctor who arc. most "wow" most suspense. most tension. BEST plot. BEST rule of cool factor. using the BEST cast. an episode that makes you go "this is why I fear the dark. the dark itself is hungry and i see WHAT- IN DUSTY SUNBEAMS?"
This is one of the Doctor Who episodes that freaked me out the most along with the Angels ones, the thought that there is something that you cannot see, that is creeping up behind you to kill you is scary enough but the fact that there is little if nothing you can do about it is absolutely terrifying
“Not every, but any” is such a terrifying realization. The fear of uncertainty, not every shadow will essentially kill you, but it has the possibility to kill you and you have no way to discern one you can be in and can’t be in.
"Almost every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark. But they're wrong. Because it's not irrational. It's Vashta Nerada." As soon as I heard that line I turned off all the lights in the house, and the episode was much better for it
2:33 I love this part bc if we follow River's timeline. That means the Doctor already went through the Daleks stealing Earth and the DoctorDonna being born and what he had to do to her to keep her alive. Within the many years River and the Doctor were together, stories have come up im sure about their past and the Doctor told River what he had to do to her. So when Donna asks "Where am I in the futute?" River knows but not Donna...not yet
I miss these episodes, the new ones just seem too random, there's like no story, I mean, remember the bad wolf? throughout the series we were wondering what it was...so amazing
I don't know whether it has its reason but I love the naming: SILENCE in the Library, and River, who comes from Silence, shows for the first time, opens us a sight of the Doctor's future. I really like the idea))
For some reason, Doctor Moon reminded me of Morpheus, the way he started explaining about the real world ,and the fantasy world. I can't believe it's all by coincidence
Doctor who loves to homage. Just look at the Kubrick references in Empty child/doctor dances, the star wars references in the end of time part 2 and the impossible planet/satan pit literally having the same premise as event horizon. The matrix references in this 2 parter are no coincidence, the 2 worlds look visually distinct, the female lead knowing she should be in love with the male lead but he doesn't understand how she feels that way, obviously doctor moon is literally Morpheus and the fact that the fake world is where people who used to live, now live out their lives on a hard drive. What makes this better than the matrix though is the characters actually have an ounce of personality to them unlike everyone's performances in the matrix which remind me of a plank of wood.
Dimitris Filippas She is insecure, feels she is unimportant, and frankly her personal ability is lower than average companions, and she constantly feels bad about it while keeping that sense of humor. That makes her more humane, much more like us. I love her for that.
She's much more independent than some of the other companions. Take Rose as an example: She just followed the doctor most of the time and always needed to be rescued. Donna trusts the doctor but she doesn't usually depends on him too much. I love her for that. She's great.

I wouldn't exactly call a bloodthirsty, carnivorous swarm: *_humane_*.
D.R. Dinkins "a bloodthirsty carnivorous swarm" isn't that the human race by definition?
James Ray nope -- invest in a dictionary man
D.R. Dinkins very ironic... VERY. My dictionary a £40 Collins one with around 2000 pages. It weighs a ton... :-)
Her story was neatly tied up at the end of the last season, so I don't think she'll be back any time soon.
erebus08 >>we've already seen when 11 takes her to the Singing Towers.
sir robert What DVD cover? And what is special about having her face and name on it?
What is on Facebook?
sir robert You do know that isn't the official poster? It's just a fan made one.
Anyone else started watching these video's after this years christmas special? R.I.P. Riven... :(
+janek kempeneers LOL ... Yes I came to this video after this year's christmas episode!!!

2:22 - 2:32 THIS is why Donna is THE best companion (and one of the best characters) EVER. The show was at it's peak when 10 traveled with Donna.
Anyone else thinking, that it must be fun to see the Weeping Angels and Vashta Nerada meeting?
Pumuckl weeping angels vs daleks
No
And the silence
Try Weeping Angels combined with Vashta Nerada AND Silence
The Weeping angels perish. They can't move if the swarm keeps looking at them constantly.
This was what I loved about Dr Who. Mind twisting concepts that are just so cool to think about. It just doesn’t feel like that anymore.
"He looks right through me, and it shouldn't kill me, but it does."
God, I felt that.
it's two in the morning, I already and stupidly afraid of the dark, this is not what I should be watching considering this episode already freaks me out.
The fear of the dark is the most common fear in the human race, and actually of all mammals. And anyway, like The Doctor says. It's not irrational.
river and the doctors love story = tragically wonderful
...BBC Studios, you misspelled the title of the video. "The Doctor Meets The Nashta Nerada | Silence In the Library | Doctor who"
It's _Vashta._ Not _Nashta._
What really confuses me is that Moffat didn't ever revisit the Vashta Nerada in his entire run of Doctor Who. They're an amazing monster that is undefeatable. Rather than the doctor swinging his screwdriver around, he's forced to use his wit to stave them off for as long as possible.
Probably wanted to explore more simpler enemies or something
"So why don't you know me? Where am I in the future?" :'( awe, my bby Donna.
River Song, very serious telling a story, sad.
Donna: "What you talking about?! You just talking rubbish. Do you know him or don't you?!"
Doctor: "DONNA! Quiet, I'm working."
2:53 I love that rhythm i just don't know what it is called
"not everybody comes back out of the dark"
feels like a tie in point of the "Night Travelers" for torchwood, episode name "From out of the Rain"
Heartwarming that the doctor told river about past companions and Donna stuck to her mind but heartwrenching at the same time to see Donna’s reaction to this
2:24 you have to appreciate donna
This show had a real knack for dialogue that sent shivers down your spine
0:22 someone explain the me why river carries a box of lettuce and chicken wings and calls it "chicken salad"
She said ""Chicken with a bit of Salad."
1:01 "What I want you to remember is this: There is no person that you call family or friend, who I can't touch."
I got over my fear of the dark, then I watched this episode. Well. Thank you, Doctor. He just doesn't want me to sleep. Can't let it get dark or these things will eat me; can't close my eyes or weeping angels will get me.
Don't worry. On Earth, they live on roadkills.
***** but people sometimes go missing. not everyone comes out of the dark
sigh....
exactly what
The every shadow no
But any shadow is hella good writing. Sent chills. Down my spine
Absolutely phenomenal two-parter, Moffat wrote some real gems in those days.
This was filmed In the old swansea central library. I wanted to visit this place but I think it is out of bounds now.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired. These things freaked me out! I hated walking around in the dark because of this episode...
"Donna, you're Donna. Donna Noble ." imagine meeting the person that in the words of the person you trust most in the world is "the most important woman in all of creation".
River almost blurred it out..
How can the OFFICIAL BBC UA-cam channel mess up so badly? It's VASHTA Nerada!
They mess up fairly regularly actually
@@Tutty628 There's only one solution then..
*_E X T E R M I N A T E ! E X T E R MI N A T E ! E X T E R M I N A A A A A A A A T E ! !_*
Can the Vashta Nerada be burned? Not much survives fire, but it would be even more scary if they were somehow fireproof.
probably not, fire was created to keep warm, cook food... and keep the darkness at bay.
@Kev Lord: The image of an Angel is an Angel. It becomes an other Angel, so yeah, it does work.
So what do we do?
Daleks: Aim for the eye stalk
Sontarans: Back of the neck
Vashta Nerasa: Run!
Best line ever. So spine chilling.
the best episode
Best doctor who arc. most "wow" most suspense. most tension. BEST plot. BEST rule of cool factor. using the BEST cast. an episode that makes you go "this is why I fear the dark. the dark itself is hungry and i see WHAT- IN DUSTY SUNBEAMS?"
Run, just run
This is one of the Doctor Who episodes that freaked me out the most along with the Angels ones, the thought that there is something that you cannot see, that is creeping up behind you to kill you is scary enough but the fact that there is little if nothing you can do about it is absolutely terrifying
"DONNAAA! quiet. im workin" lmfaoooo i love how he says that
“Not every, but any” is such a terrifying realization. The fear of uncertainty, not every shadow will essentially kill you, but it has the possibility to kill you and you have no way to discern one you can be in and can’t be in.
It's sad how this is one of the most saddest episodes for River Song's story and we didn't even know her.
It’s 2022 years after David tennant left doctor who and I’m still not over it
Well good news for you!
I think auto correct messed up the title ‘Natasha Nerada’ lol
"Every shadow? No! But any shadow" is a great way to explain how dangerous it is without making it virtually unbeatable!
The Nashta Nerada? Who else noticed?
"Almost every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark. But they're wrong. Because it's not irrational. It's Vashta Nerada."
As soon as I heard that line I turned off all the lights in the house, and the episode was much better for it
Timestamp?
They make a shadow, no wonder they love chicken
for f's sake...
2:05 Foreshadowing of A Good Man Goes To War.
hey... who turned off the light ???
Me, sorry it was my electrical bill it was through the roof
Boneless, Vashta Nerada and Weeping Angels are the trio that no one ever wanna met ever in their lifetime
Who in actuality consumed the chicken leg?
“Not everyone comes back out of the dark” now that’s menacing
I love how Donna calls River out on her riddles and her evasive conversation stuff. This was the most annoying part of her character
This show is so good
Why is this called 'The Doctor meets the Nashta Nirvana'? IT'S THE VASHTIN NARADA
Vashta Narada*
Such a great saying and what a wonderful episode overall.
0:01 Me on a day trip
Isn't it Vashta Nerada?
I thought it was the vashta nerada
i love the way river looked at donna when she heard who she was at least we know the songs of the doctor donna still sings across the universe
I don't like Donna.
i love Donna
Why?
Dimitris Filippas she is soo funny, good, funny reactions and many other things!
"Every shadow? No, but any shadow."
Well, it's the same in the real world.
Every man? No, but any man
"NotAllMenButAnyMen
2:24-2:30
Lol! I LOVE Donna so much. She is so... alive!
I watched this a few days ago and I have started to watch all the doctor who episodes.
This episode scared me so bad that I couldn't finish the rest of the series that was available at the time...
@3:27 is that the vashta starting to hunt proper dave?
Im so glad, I'm watching this at midnight in the pitch black
