You are so very kind for taking time to stain and make swatches for us to compare! I was patiently anticipating the reveal for Minwax’s “JACOBEAN” though. I’ve already applied my stain to a floating shelf made from THREE varying mystery wood found in garage and I did get desired dark shade. Except some areas were TOO dark, almost black w/no grain reveal whatsoever.
Thank you so much. I put all my stain colors on wood today and none were the color I needed for my project. Was just headed to the home store when I saw your video. It helped tremendously. ❤️
Yes, awesome job! I love the amount of detail as to what you did and I LOVE that it is short simple and shows the results with plenty of light and a smooth transition between each one. Thank you!
Just stick a few steel wools in a big container of vinegar. That's the cheap way of making stain that will age or pickle. Otherwise you can buy it. What it does is make it grey. You're supposed to let it sit on there for a while, much longer than normal stains. And you do NOT use pre-stain on them. This steel wool vinegar mix needs that bare wood. At least in every application I've used it in, especially tight grain woods.
Thank you so much for all of these examples. I appreciate the time and money investment you made and also sharing your expertise with us. This video is really helpful.
I really like the look of the red oak and red mahogany. Thank you for going through the trouble of doing this test. It's nice to see them all together like that.
Thanks Dave. A lot of us use pine and can't find good examples of stain on white pine. The paint sticks at the big box don't cut it and the keyring swatches are horrible. I can vouch for the minwax pre stain. It looked great with Red Oak(stain) and a couple coats of polycrylic.
I paused the video and set it down on my floors and chose the perfect shade of stain. I was planning on doing a honey walnut colour, now I’m doing red mahogany! Thank you !!
Great video. Definitely helps to see the colors after it’s applied. Also good advice on the conditioner, several years back I did a project with pine I didn’t know anything so I applied stain without conditioner and it turned out terrible!
I love golden oak on pine. It warms up beautifully over time too. As a very casual DIYer, I'll just put a couple coats on & anymore (or darker stains) just makes the imperfections stand out more.
For testing stain color is it ok not to sand or will sanding change the color? Also, does the pre stain first change the color for testing? I want to test a specific stain on different woods.
Nice comparisons, thank you. I go for pine for most projects. I'm looking to build me a little side table next to my futon but hate how some stains look on pine. Gonna try that Kona out. I'll link ya a pic when I'm done.
Thanks. Your video is the first info I've found that shows me what I've been wanting to know. I'm building a guitar speaker cabinet with the box being pine and the speaker board is birch plywood. I will use gunstock stain (Thank You) and I'm debating danish oil, tung oil, or polyurethane for a finish.
Me too. Look at Minwax Wood Stain Coastal Grey. Looks darker. I am using pine too, so not sure if dark enough. Since you post is two months old, Let me know if you found something that worked!
@@TheRoger1205 yes Sir..i simply added a spoonful of ebony rust o leum wood stain to a new can..i like it but my wife loves it! Mission accomplished...lol..anyhow good luck with your project
Gave this a big thumbs UP-great video-what a kind thing to do-this helped me tremendously as we have a raw, what I think is pine, old drop leaf table. We are sanding to get stains out and need to stain it a light color after we sand it. This helped so much-now I know either ipswitch or cherry is what I need AND the Minwax pre-stain conditioner! You are wonderful!!!
What color is the orangy one ? Im trying to find our stain color. Its very old like 20 years and has a pretty common yellow ish warm tint to it .. just really not sure how to find it !
Yes this was very helpful thank you so much I'm about to make a sign on a pinewood round and didn't know what stain to use so now you've helped me and I appreciate it thank you so much have a great day God bless
A stain I really fell in love with on pine is “aged barrel” it’s a really good mix of gray and brown. Looks terrible on poplar and barely covers red oak but looks good on white. It’s pretty much the only colored stain I use now.
Stains will look different on different types of wood. Check out my other videos on stains. This is why I made these videos, to show what they look like
I wonder how long you left the stain on before wiping off the excess? I am playing around with Minwax Red Sedona and found if I wipe off the excess right after application there was little stain. Then I read the directions and it said to leave it on for 5 minutes before wiping off the excess and the longer you leave it on the darker it will be. After 5 minutes I got the color I wanted.
This'n here is a mighty helpful video

What stain did you use? I am getting ready to stain my pine floors and I like the gunstock but I'm concerned about yellowing/oranging of the wood.
