You are so very kind for taking time to stain and make swatches for us to compare! I was patiently anticipating the reveal for Minwax’s “JACOBEAN” though. I’ve already applied my stain to a floating shelf made from THREE varying mystery wood found in garage and I did get desired dark shade. Except some areas were TOO dark, almost black w/no grain reveal whatsoever.
Thank you so much. I put all my stain colors on wood today and none were the color I needed for my project. Was just headed to the home store when I saw your video. It helped tremendously. ❤️
Thanks Dave. A lot of us use pine and can't find good examples of stain on white pine. The paint sticks at the big box don't cut it and the keyring swatches are horrible. I can vouch for the minwax pre stain. It looked great with Red Oak(stain) and a couple coats of polycrylic.
Yes, awesome job! I love the amount of detail as to what you did and I LOVE that it is short simple and shows the results with plenty of light and a smooth transition between each one. Thank you!
Nice comparisons, thank you. I go for pine for most projects. I'm looking to build me a little side table next to my futon but hate how some stains look on pine. Gonna try that Kona out. I'll link ya a pic when I'm done.
THANK YOU for this demo..This is why I have accumulated so many stains chasing colors and wasting money. A lot really does nothing to crow about "on pine". Especially any of the light colors. You have 4 light colors there that you really can't see any difference. Therefore I would have bought 4 cans when I only needed one...So I have stain for sale, anyone interested ? LOL
TheBIGcountry67 You are welcome, I have several cans myself. Some you think will look good from picture on can, but until you use it you don't know, that's why I made the video.
You did good ! Here's 3 more that will duplicate on pine..Early American, Honey and Dark Walnut..LOL All about the same hue . Not enough difference to have all 3..Now I have used Early American often, but I chased the other 2 for a change (I had hoped)..Nothing ! So your video proved I wasn't insane that pine duplicates.
I love golden oak on pine. It warms up beautifully over time too. As a very casual DIYer, I'll just put a couple coats on & anymore (or darker stains) just makes the imperfections stand out more.
Great video. Definitely helps to see the colors after it’s applied. Also good advice on the conditioner, several years back I did a project with pine I didn’t know anything so I applied stain without conditioner and it turned out terrible!
A stain I really fell in love with on pine is “aged barrel” it’s a really good mix of gray and brown. Looks terrible on poplar and barely covers red oak but looks good on white. It’s pretty much the only colored stain I use now.
That grey is awesome! I am going to have to look into that one. Trying to buy my first home and it has wood floors throughout. They need sanded and restrained and I love the grey
I really like the look of the red oak and red mahogany. Thank you for going through the trouble of doing this test. It's nice to see them all together like that.
I paused the video and set it down on my floors and chose the perfect shade of stain. I was planning on doing a honey walnut colour, now I’m doing red mahogany! Thank you !!
Thank you so much for all of these examples. I appreciate the time and money investment you made and also sharing your expertise with us. This video is really helpful.
My favorite which isn’t in the video is Minwax Jacobean. Nice dark stain which is not quite ebony but still quite dark. Really highlights the grain in cheaper woods like pine and “white wood”
Thank you! This video is much needed. Most of the sample boards at the store seem to be done on oak instead of pine. Oak? Really? 90% (pulled-straight-out-of-my-ass statistics) of the wood sold from box stores are pine. 1.2% is oak.
Just stick a few steel wools in a big container of vinegar. That's the cheap way of making stain that will age or pickle. Otherwise you can buy it. What it does is make it grey. You're supposed to let it sit on there for a while, much longer than normal stains. And you do NOT use pre-stain on them. This steel wool vinegar mix needs that bare wood. At least in every application I've used it in, especially tight grain woods.
Really helpful to see them side by side, thanks. I've stained lots of projects successfully and never used pre-stain, what is the purpose of pre-stain?

For testing stain color is it ok not to sand or will sanding change the color? Also, does the pre stain first change the color for testing? I want to test a specific stain on different woods.
Dave, I know this is an old post, but I have red oak floors and pine staircase. Ideas on trying to match the pine treads to the oak floor? Just want to get in the same ballpark. Maybe use solid stain on the stair treads to mask the difference between the grain? We are going darker, like dark walnut or 50/50 dark walnut/special walnut on the floors. We are doing white risers, white balusters, and dark handrail (probably painted so we don't have to replace them).
Thanks for taking the time to prep and shoot this video. I just bought the dark walnut and was scared when i tested it on a scrap piece cause it was so dark. I guess i need to stop being lazy and use the conditioner too. Any tips on application of the stain itself? Your result on the dark walnut was pretty nice.
Matt K You are welcome, always use conditioner, and if you don't want it to dark, just let it set for about 5 minutes and wipe off. The longer it sets, the darker it gets

I used a "Dark mahogany" stain on my bench built out of pine and it turned out purple/dark grape. Any idea what could be done to save it? Ad a couple of more layers? Maybe another layer of a darker stain to cover it up a bit? Thanks, great video!
I wonder how long you left the stain on before wiping off the excess? I am playing around with Minwax Red Sedona and found if I wipe off the excess right after application there was little stain. Then I read the directions and it said to leave it on for 5 minutes before wiping off the excess and the longer you leave it on the darker it will be. After 5 minutes I got the color I wanted.
Hello Dave, Thank you for this very informative video. Could you do a similar video but comparing Minwax Water Based Wood Stains (Natural beige, Oriental Ginger, Honeycomb, Terracotta, Rosewood, Coffee, American Walnut, etc) on pine and red oak? Thanks for posting this!
