It'd been a while since I'd ridden a sports bike. So I was a little excited and a bit rusty! Thankfully, it's a very forgiving bike and an absolute joy to ride. As always, this is not a professional review, so apologies for the general unprofessionalness!
Also, apologies for the dodgy camera angles. I forgot that I was on a sportsbike and didn't angle the camera properly. Also the audio is a bit dodgy at times. This bike was far louder than I expected! - Авто та транспорт
I just bought one! Absolutely magical. I'm not a great rider but feel like a million bucks on it. Hard to get used to not blipping the throttle on gear changes. So rewarding. Thanks for the review.
About time someone opened it up well done
Just seen this review now and it's as good if not better than most of them! And you having never ridden one or sports bikes in a while you can't say much more than you want one after a thrashing down some country lanes etc! Great job and thanks!
Bennie I have watched a few of your reviews now.I stumbled across one trying to explain torque to my mate and why a 600 sportsbike would do everything faster and better than my XR1200 but I just loved my bike. Keep up the good work these road tests put a smile on my face.
Thanks. Always fancied riding an XR1200. Seems like my kind of Harley ;)
Great review Bennie, after watching it I need one!!!! Good job 👍🏻
This is a happy, happy video.
Mate my heart sank as soon as i saw that van after the blind crest 5:09 ... thank god he wasnt pulling out
I’m going to look at one to purchase on Wednesday. This firmly solidified my decision. Thanks
Just finished rebuilding one and can’t wait to compare it to my 848 EVO and 916! Your ride has got me frothing😅
that was fun, thanks. I've written this before - there was a world champion surfer Stuart Entwhistle (Twizzle to all), his lasting comment was " the best surfer in the line up, is the one having the most fun" - same applies to motorbikes.
The start kills me ..brilliant
Great review!!
This is the first vidieo of someone on this bike that know what he's doing I've been wanting someone to pull hard so I can here the power I am currently looking at the 959 tho
Again you've changed my opinion about bikes. I think I like both HD type cruisers and these racing type bikes now. I think I'd own both kinds (If I could afford either). I like the roar and excitement of the HD, but this is also amazing at low and high speeds. So many options.
DefiningAwesome They're both fun in their own ways. Harleys are easier at low speeds and you can reach the limits of their performance very easily. A sportsbike requires a different mindset. You need a different level of discipline and self control when exploiting it's performance. As fun as riding a sport bike quickly is, there's always a slight sense of fear involved that I don't get with cruisers, mostly because of the speed. But then if there wasn't any risk involved, I wouldn't really be interested! For some people though, the speed and the intensity of thrashing a sportsbike, is too scary, too uncomfortable and not enjoyable. These are probably the more sensible people and they probably end up on cruisers!
Bennie Hitchcock Yeah, that's probably me mate. I always think I'd hop on fast bike any day if I didn't mind the speed.
Great review did you ever try an S1000rr or fireblade? Also how did you find the heat?
great bike, with an exhaust it sounds like a beast.
people please don't listen to the sound on crap 0.2c speakers.
you need base to hear the glory.
Excellent video! Subbed!
great job clean audio
Great video mate, glad the orgasmatron's dash only reads in kph in race mode.
NilSatis No9 Uh, yeah...lucky that ;)
heyBennie how warm would you day temp was outside and were pipes wrapped thanx pal
Its amazing that u can give ur review while riding the 899 so hard.....its truly amazing.....its like having sex and giving a cricket commentary on it.......amazing ride though.....ride on....be safe.....cheers.....
+Vaibhav Halgekar Haha! Tbh, I could probably ride quicker if I really concentrated and didn't talk so much. But it's not that difficult really. Saying that, I doubt I'd be chatting away like this if I was on a track
well said
Amazing bike, and you've got some balls for that speed on lanes like that :O
+SamMight Thanks. Loved this bike. Can't wait to try the new 959
He gave it a good thrashing😊
Nice one!
Compared to a litre bike or a 1299, which would you choose for street riding with some weekend fun etc? Great video :)
I'd probably go for the 899 as I can use more of the bikes performance on the street. I never really felt like I was was getting the most out of the 1299 on these roads whereas the 899's performance was easier to use and less scary!
Thanks for showing off the bike! I like it how you said the bike's lower power makes it more manageable for road use and you need to use the gears more or something along those lines... At 150 Hp it makes more power than a lot of cars.. I'd be scared to ride the 1200cc version.
benjahnz Ridden the 1299S on the same roads recently. Nearly pooped myself! Once you get used to the speed tho, you can start to enjoy it more. But yeah, the 899 is far easier to manage on the street and is quick enough really.
i have one, i ride it like that, rarely out of race mode, unless its wet
Tried the supersport?
Ugh I want one! 😫
I reckon that speedo was displaying kilometers an hour....wink wink
james grocott I reckon you might be right...wink wink
P.S. I wonder how the service is to adjust the valves! Etc. Would this concern you?
+dry509 Ducati's use desmodromic valves, so valve adjustments are rare. You do have to keep an eye on the belts that run the cams though. But generally, the maintenance of modern Ducati's is a lot better that they used to be. All the electronics are German and general reliability is pretty good compared to Japanese rivals. Not really a bike for the home mechanic though. You do need some specialist tools to service them.
Can you get powerheelies with the 899 or is´t there enough power?
1st gear is easy enough. 2nd gear will need a bit of a bounce or ideally the clutch. Despite being a big vtwin it does need to be revved. Not as much low down torque as you might expect.
Even a 150cc can do wheelies
G'day Bernie. Your obviously a very good rider but please mate slow it down a touch. If that van popped out it would've been curtains. Stay safe mate.
Charlie M the van at 5:11, yup he probably had the window down and heard you coming, otherwise 😫
Thats the problem with most bikers as if the whole motoring world should keep an eye on them. Its always the cagers fault in an accident just becuase cages are bigger.
Are you going to upload your test of the 1299? I'd really like to see that!
will01quinn Yeah I have some footage of the 1299S, but I need to cut a lot of footage out before I upload it! ;)
+will01quinn 1299s vid is up ;) ua-cam.com/video/gX-dHOVY6_E/v-deo.html
So it sounds like you would recommend it? I love quick shifters.
+dry509 A definite recommendation from me. It's almost the perfect sports bike for the road. Shame there's no quickshifter for the downshifts, but other than that, very few things to complain about. I still feel it could do with a tiny bit more mid range punch though. Can't wait to see if the 959 is better in that regard.
+Bennie Hitchcock Thanks. So something like this would have a wider power band than a CBR-1000Rr?
+dry509 I wouldn't say that necessarily. It just doesn't have the low down torque I'd expect from a vtwin. A modern fireblade would be faster, but maybe not as fun. (I own a fireblade BTW)
The more I look at it the more I want one! Maybe if and when they bring out a revised version that fixes the heat problems. Also the stock footpegs are rubbish. But it sounds and looks soooo good.
+leighsa49 They've been trying to fix the heat problems since the original 1199 came out. I honestly don't think that'll ever be fully solved. That said, it's really not that big of a deal - I've owned mine for two years and my only real complaint is those pegs. That's a $60-100 fix though and you're good to go. I don't think you'd ever regret picking one of these up.
I
Darwin Allen I dont think I would either haha. I had good fun riding it! It has loads more character than my 636 and a fair bit more mid range torque, but at 900cc I feel like it needs to be faster. I rekon if they squeezed another 10HP out of her, or shaved some weight, because its actually quite heavy(around 200kg) ready to ride, I'd be sold on one. Even at the $21k asking price haha
Oof, 21k? Where do you live?
Darwin Allen Australia haha. Apparently we make too much money so everything is hella expensive :|. I paid 17k for my ZX-6
nice
proper professional reviews are overrated. the reason why we watch youtube is to get honest everyday peoples opinions because car shows where blowing smoke up our asses so you good m8
is the battery weak?
+bokelund917 Nah, you just have to wait for the fuel pump to finish priming fully before you hit the starter
Gone from obese Americans to super sexy Italians......more like it!!! :D
I'm not keen on the engine note though, it's too much ER6 and not enough Busa!
Great review, from a real biker. Thanks
clanmac66 The sound has grown on me. It reminds me of my old Aprilia!
it sucks being skint :-(
Nice test again, although it's highlighted why I want a Harley to keep me safe and sound and I prefer my licence in my wallet.
***** Yeah you can get yourself in a lot of trouble with a bike like this!
Harleys are very dangerous except for the Vrod they don't have enough power to weight range and don't handle well enough to get through and stay away from traffic leaving you a sitting duck.
Panache Automotive and the way most sports bikes get ridden on roads makes them extremely dangerous to the rider and others.
Just a tip: Stop showing your speedo and advertising your illegal speeds. :-(
fck that! clear those roads out and run that sh!t like the isle if mann, ill wait patiently for that vid...
+CITIZEN ONE, Author or someone trolling 😂
That's a polite word for it - anyway I'm only warning the guy because there are prosecutions from time to time in the UK based upon UA-cam Videos usually posted on FB showing illegal speeds. It's one thing not getting caught when we are out on the road - but to get caught afterwards would be "unlucky". Peace out! ;-)
+CITIZEN ONE, Author Yeah, I didn't do a very good job of positioning the camera in this vid!
Apart from that great Video - can't wait for more!
