Dragon Quest XI review + PS4, Switch and 3DS differences (mild spoilers)

- I adore Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age, still I have much constructive criticism for what I believe would make this game more accessible to gamers who are not already DQ fans, which also adds conflict to the 'story' of the video. That being said I hope you'll join me for a light-hearted review of the game, including Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition. Plus we'll inspect version differences between the PS4, PC, Switch and even the Japan-only 3DS edition with a focus on new features for Nintendo Switch. This video contains mild spoilers.
Join the Kreative Community! Subscribe or follow Kreative games on UA-cam, Twitch and Instagram.
CORRECTIONS: Switch version unique features also include new side quests for each character and option to marry all supporting characters rather than only Gemma. PS4/PC version unique features also include the crackshot target shooting. All Japan versions feature the spell of restoration which allowed you to transfer save data between versions. Also forgot to mention the awesome limited edition consoles released for the game, image search and check them out.

haha thanks vdogaymer! Always refreshing to hear from someone who appreciates what I'm trying to convey :) Hope to see you back soon!
Imagine complaining about the amount of story in a Dragon Quest game.
Hi Carnage thanks for watching! I knew straight away that my opinion about the balance of the story in Dragon Quest XI wouldn't be a popular one with the majority of viewers because most of those viewers come in with a pre-established opinion about the game (mostly positive opinion which is why they are watching videos about it on UA-cam). They don't want to hear negatives about their favorite games. Don't get me wrong I love DQXI and am on my second play though of it, but I try to not let my fandom influence my videos so I can give an objective opinion for the average player whether they have played every DQ game like myself (sans 10), any other games, or maybe even don't play games much at all. And after all it doesn't make a very interesting video if there's only praise and no criticism :). I hope viewers will still watch even if we disagree on some parts because I think there is entertainment value here for fans and newcomers alike. I want to continue to have constructive conversations about our opinions-both praises and constructive criticisms-in an environment that is conducive to all feeling welcome to speak openly, honestly, and respectfully about Dragon Quest and all video games. Thanks Carnage and everyone for watching!
Lol I was just about to say the same thing about you complaining about to much story lol but it’s kool that’s your opinion.
Apparently he has never touched a persona or shin megami game 🤣🤣🤣
@@Vecha302 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You seem to have neglected to mention the fact that each character gets a new side story in the switch version.
You're absolutely right! There are a few things that I didn't find through my research that have been pointed out or otherwise came to my attention. I'll add a corrections section in the video description with additional unique features for different versions. Thanks alegl5141 hope you enjoyed the video!
I'd definitely buy the 3ds version if it would be released to the west. The art style reminds me a bit of dq9 which holds a very special place to me since it was my first dq game:) I've played the demo for dq11 on the switch and I love it but the nintendo 3ds is personally still my favourite even though the graphics aren't that pretty.
Hi Amy! Thanks for watching. The 3DS version definitely holds interest for me as well. I think the best shot we have at getting an English version at this point is a fan translation but it would have to be downloaded as an emulator. There is always a chance a third party like Limited Run Games could publish it as well if a translation were available and then we could get a physical version but it's a long shot. Hope that you'll check out some of my other videos and consider subscribing. Take care!
3ds xl is still my favourite portable console. I do have a switch (OG), have felt what the lite version is like. Yet I still like how I can easily slip 3ds into most of my pockets
Learn something new every day, I've been playing the game for 150 hours and never knew there were shootable targets.
Pretty fun to find them all too! But it's only available in the original release, not the Definitive Editions. Thanks for watching vR!
@@KreativeGames That would do it, I have the switch version, still a neat fact either way!
love the whole start of DQXI, till you get your 4-6 companions.., love the pacing of action, new areas and story pieces
Great video, i subbed 👌🏻
Thanks Bas! I've been getting a lot of hate for the more comic approach I've taken in this video, perhaps misinterpreted because I do like this. It's comments like yours that make me remember that it's worth it to drive forward and keep creating. Thanks a million and hope to see you back in the comments soon!
I'm kinda confused on your opinion about the dialogue. I mean, without it there what are you supposed to even do in an RPG? Just battle and grind? But regardless it's almost all optional, so you could just ignore it if you don't like reading. Having the option there for those that do is definitely only a plus tho
Totally agree! I think the dialogue and cutscenes are all great in the game but in my humble opinion there is just too much. The battle system, exploration, character building, and item crafting were all done really well in DQ11 and I think the game would have been more balanced if those aspects were given as much attention as the story. But in the end my video is just for entertainment and sharing my opinion and hopefully starting good conversations with other DQ fans without jumping to conclusions. Thanks for watching TheCodingGamer!
Having a fun time playing this in 2D mode
Those tinder profiles were perfect!
Hey Jay! Always good to see you back and I'm glad you enjoyed the dating profiles for the characters! Did you have a favorite?
@@KreativeGames Its a toss up between Jade and Hendrik! lol Always great to see a new vid pop up from you too, keep em coming! :)
They were not
nah I love reading character dialogue lmao
Moon me too!! 😭💜
some innner areas almost seemed better in Switch (nicer metal glows), but in open areas a Switch had a few more pop ins.., but only in a few open world parts.., otherwise unless you run ps4 and switch side by side, you dont notice diffrences (except in handheld mode, there you do notice it)
So I haven’t bought this title yet. Should I get the definitive version on PS4 or Switch? I have a PS5.
Hi C.W.! Thanks for watching and commenting. Which version depends on what's more important to you. If 2D mode and the added features are a must, then the Definitive version is perfect (either Switch or PS4). If you want the best visuals for your PS5 I recommend the original PS4 release (non-definitive edition).
Idk what it is but you got a special touch in reviewing this series. I like your moxy and will be looking forward to more. 👍❤️

@@KreativeGames The Dragon Quest games in particular, the ins and outs of it 🙏🎮
Generally a solid video. However, for future videos, it'd be nice if you could take into account more that some people watching will not have finished the game. I've about 20 hours in, just got the 6th and 7th party members...and assumed that was it. In your list of party members, you give away a party member that, I suspect, was intended to be kept secret. (they're not featured in any of the promotional art of the cast, and I've watched/read many other reviews and haven't seen them mentioned until this one) It's not a big deal, but I'm a bit disappointed to have this spoiled for me, so might be worth thinking about for future videos. (Or at least include a note in the description that it contains spoilers)
I thought about that when writing and decided it wasn’t enough of a twist and was too important an aspect for the video to leave out. That being said though I see your point for a type of warning prior and I will consider that going forward with future videos. Thank you sincerely for watching and for your honest and productive feedback. I hope you’ll consider subscribing and I hope to see you in the comments for other videos!
@@KreativeGames Yeah, I do get that it's not always easy to draw the line between what is and isn't a spoiler. In this case, the fact that the cover of the box shows your "full" 7-person party, and the 8th character is never shown in the trailers as a party member, suggests that the marketing team views it as enough of a twist to want to keep hidden...but I understand how you'd consider otherwise.
Would you consider adding a note to the description (something along the lines of "May contain spoilers for the first Act/first 40 hours" - no idea when you actually get that party member), so other people like me won't have it spoiled when they'd rather discover it on their own?
@@UltimateMaster50 Sure I'll put a little disclaimer in the description! But don't worry, there are some much bigger surprises coming your way, enjoy!
@@KreativeGames Thanks for doing that! Subscribed :)
It has no OST! 33 songs are from other DQ games. Easily my biggest problem.
God i want a 3ds fan translation
Maybe because I love good story telling the dialogue never gets boring to me
All those long-winded dialogues are worth it in the second half "postgame" when you feel extra connected to the characters! Thanks for watching and hope to see you back soon!
How much text does this have compared to the legend of heroes trails of cold steel III? I'm pretty sure this is going to be close.
Idk how long CS3's script is, but DQ11's script is about 700K words long
@@TheCodingGamer Thank you for the info. Cold Steel III is definitely longer! I just checked and found out that it has 1.1 million words.
What's you're favorite dragon quest? Thinking of getting into the dragon quest series.
That's a very hard question! But I think 8 is a great place to start. You can find it on PS2 and 3DS. All in all it will take about 80 hours but the characters and presentation are fantastic.
If you like old-school RPGs you can check out 3 on NES or download a translation for the Super Famicom version. It's also available on cell phones and the cell phone version was ported to Switch...Not the best version but the most easily accessible. 3 is my personal favorite. You can't go wrong with 11 either.
Let me know if you have any questions about them and I'd be happy to help shed some light.
8 is still my favorite. Sucks they didn't put it on ps4.
Also I found out you can "marry" everybody. We got bromance and also Slyvando...there's that.
Yeah even Gemma, who really didn't play much of a role in the game except for the very beginning. I'll have to watch them all on UA-cam and see which ones are most interesting!
@@KreativeGames Jade
@@KreativeGames still wished they animated the wedding
@@KreativeGames I wasn't that upset when I could only marry Gemma, but it was just weird to pick her from some wishing thing. Would of made more sense to have an entire courtship quest leading up to a marriage. Makes more sense than wishing to have a bride
@@Excalibur01 Totally agree, seems like they really half-assed the weddings by not animating it and making it a wish rather than some sort of quest. I really liked how they did the weddings in DQ8, and you'll see that soon enough! :D
Didn't know it was going to be an open world game. That explains why the cities are large compared to last games.
I bet we can expect even more open world elements in DQ12 (or a remake of DQ3?). Thanks for watching Brandon! I've got more Dragon Quest videos in the works for the next month so hope to see you back in the comments soon!
If I didn't have this on in the background while doing other things, I would have turned it off immediately after hearing about "too much story."
Hi Zach thanks for watching...or listening! Thanks Zach and everyone for watching!
I'm a bit worried Breath of the Wild has destroyed my love of JRPGs because I've just started DQ11 and it feel so limited in terms of exploration as you describe; I love grinding in DQ games though, the skill points always make it worth it and just kind of relaxing. I'm only 4 hours in and the reviews have been incredible for every version so hoping it grabs me more soon
Stick with it pulphope! There are aspects that make up for the exploration limitation. Also the "second half" of the game really opens up!
i'd like to play the 3ds version but it's very unlikely to be released, maybe an unofficial translation though.
The Swtich version has the 3DS version on it.
Vyse195 Not quite the 3DS version had it’s own 3D mode on top of the 2D mode the Switch version got. There is some footage of it in the video.
I agree Chams Ghom, I don't think we'll get it officially released but maybe Limited Run Games or a similar company will release it if there is enough demand. The Switch version did pick up a lot of the features of the 3DS version, but those features were reinvented to fit the Switch, so the 3DS still offers a unique experience for Dragon Quest XI that we'll hopefully be able to experience some day without learning to read Japanese. Thanks for watching and hope to see you back soon!
Chams Ghom - I am still so upset that the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI for the U.S.A. market has not been released and may never be released!!! I am aware of the Nintendo Switch version, but I still wanted to purchase the N3DS version as I love the handheld and there is something about playing games on the system it was originally made for. That, and the appeal of the graphics on the low res N3DS screen(s).
If Square-Enix/Nintendo decide to release it in the US, I would be pleasantly surprised.
I am also upset that Monster Hunter Generations: Ultimate did not get a N3DS U.S.A. release!
The 3DS version is very boring makes the game look smaller the PS4 and PC steam are the 2 best just listen to the opening intro Nintendo doesn’t have the best graphics still they aren’t interested that’s why they will always be a cheap console and Xbox and Playstation will be the best gaming console and PC Sega beat Nintendo on systems when it released Sega Dreamcast I hope Sega comes back again on systems when I buy Nintendo games I buy what games only plays on Nintendo such as Mario Zelda Luigi mansion games that PS4 and PC gets not worth to buy on Nintendo I want the best graphics Nintendo isn’t ready yet to join Playstation and Xbox and PC they embraced themselves in 1984 releasing 8 bit games playing weak not close to the arcade that’s the biggest mistake they did I bought 4 arcade games back then cause the arcade rules the world of video games finally in year 2000 PlayStation 2 Xbox we’re finally playing just like the arcades I hope Nintendo makes a gaming system that’s powerful as PS4 and Xbox one I don’t mind paying $499.00 for it I hope Nintendo stops making cheap systems I own every system Nintendo isn’t close to anyone’s level that’s why they are the cheapest system out there
I love this game!!!
Just got it for Switch
We love this game too! I mean sure I have some criticisms and ideas but overall Square Enix did a fantastic job.
Get a jackpot twice in a row at the casino.
I have switch version and the ps4 pro version ,. The difference is night and day.. Big difference in visual graphics texture draw distance .. Switch doesn't have any anti aliasing, no ambian occlusion, low draw distance..overall i still love the switch version.. If you compare it to ps4 pro , its a mismatch.. I heard dq 11 is build from the ground up for the switch version because it cannot handle the straight port from ps4 visual graphics..
Why all the dislikes?
Had the 3DS one came out, I would have gotten it, too.
Excalibur01 :Nope and it’ll never ever come out to the west!
@@timothyroehm4307 I know...shame. I would have bought it in a heart beat along side the PS4. Play one at home and one on the road or at work
Much crazier things have happened in gaming Excalibur, so don't lose hope from the naysayers that we won't see the 3DS version released in the future. They said DQ5 and 6 would never come to the west and then BAM they came to the DS 16 years later. Also we could see a private translation as a patch or unofficial release happen, that's how I played the Super Famicom version of DQ3 was by downloading a fan-made translation, saving it to an SD card, and playing it on my Retron 5. There is lots of Dragon Quest to come whether the game is translated or not though so keep enjoying all of that and if it does come, it will be a pleasant surprise!
@@KreativeGames outside a fan translation, the 3DS is effectively dead
I had to pause the video after he said that a Japanese RPG had too much text. And that he wanted more action. Then go play another type of game. The fact that dragon quest xi has so much more depth and all of the NPCs having dialogue is a bonus!
There just might be a fan translation one day for the 3DS version Dragon Quest 11, I say that because there is already fan translations of four Dragon Quest Monsters 3DS games Dragon Quest Monsters Terry's Wonderland
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional
Dragon Quest Monsters to Cobi and Tara's Marvelous Mysterious Key
And there is a lot of fans who want to play Dragon Quest 11 3ds in English
That would make me so happy! Let me know if you hear anything else about it.
Did you say “dragobian settings”??
They also removed the crackshot crossbow targets
Jeez now I find out after running around looking for targets for no reason apparently...🤣 why did they take that out for the switch version?
@@tiffanylee8022 it was removed because the 2D mode didn't have them
@@TheCodingGamer well should still be available for when playing in the 3D mode at least
I didn't knew about them at all, might this be the reason why the crossbow feels so useless in the game? I really didn't knew why i should ever use it.
I got most of them but I gave up. I'm glad
God I want the better music and original japanese voices

Never really played any of the games you covered but I'm sure they're all just as insightful
DQXI (especially on Switch) is the BEST Jrpg out...., even overal a tick better than the great Persona 5!
Even if DQXI is "linear'; exploring/ searching for loot in new areas .. and "running / horse riding" fast thru the fluid over world for mats is fun
(Person 5 isn't exactly open world either)
battles, enemies, story, characters, skill progressionn and crafting are all great.. besides fun exploring new areas
it is easy, so you can experiment on skills..., but bosses later and endgame are not easy..., and veterans can still use the draconian setting
My second favourite Jrpg, i still think SMT 4 Apocalypse is a bit better .
Totally agree! I may have had some constructive criticisms for DQ11 but all in all I absolutely adore this game.
Hint : it's the Nintendo one!

Someone hasn't played the Legend of Heroes games...
Busted! Where would I start?
@@KreativeGames If you're a fan of old school JRPG's, it's best to start at the beginning with Trails in the Sky. But if you prefer a more modern game like Persona 5 or Final Fantasy 15, then I'd suggest starting with Trails of Cold Steel. Only thing to note, Trails of Cold Steel has a high school setting, but you don't actually spend that much time at the school-- most of the time you travel around the country experiencing the world. But if you really dislike a school setting, then start with Trails in the Sky first to understand what the world/games are really about without getting caught up by the school nonsense.
Edit: Whoops. I just realized why I posted the original comment and it was because you were complaining about how much story is in the game. Please, if you do not like a long story-- don't bother with the legend of heroes games. They have in my opinion, a much more interesting story than dragon quest (i'd put it on the same level as actual fantasy novels, or at least close to it), but they are without a doubt story-first games.
Thanks! Sounds like I would enjoy Trails in the Sky. Any particular version you recommend? I see it's on PSP and a VITA version called "The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky FC Evolution" but they are both pretty expensive.
Don't take my critique and complaint. I'm just trying to put myself in the shoes of the average gamer in attempt to remain objective. I love the story in DQ11 for the most part, but otherwise my videos would be simply praising the game and it's good in my opinion to have some conflict and ideas for improvements.
@@KreativeGames Ah, that makes sense from a reviewing perspective. I can see that entirely.
If you are able, I'd actually recommend playing the game on PC-- all three trails in the sky games are available on steam. The first game is $20 which is worth it imo. If not, the Vita version is technically superior to the PSP version, but both are outclassed by PC.

I mean, there are RPGs with limited amounts of text. Not all RPGs are defined by an insane amount of text. Go back to your visual novels bud.
I love Planescape Torment which is like 95% dialog, and I couldn't help but cringe at OP telling a dude who's played multiple Draqon Quest games that he's not hardcore enough for rpgs. It makes it sound like Black Sama is the kiddo that needs to go back to fortnite.
