I’ve played and completed the Switch version last year, and I cannot recommend this game enough. The fact it’s now on all consoles is even better. It’s one of the most polished games I’ve ever played, forging is addictive, and we even get more story content than in the original. And orchestral tracks too. And I guarantee you’ll miss something when you explore each area. And if you go into story events out of order, the game compensates for this and goes with it.
If you enjoyed this, I heartily recommend the older games. You'll feel instantly at home, regardless of the retro look. Especially if you tried the 2d or Ticklington parts.

Playing this game is the most fun I've had in years. I played DQIX on the DS and loved that so I knew I'd love XI. Everything about the game is just SO good. The story, the characters, the battle mechanics, the music, the gear. There also isn't a single missable achievement/trophy which means you can accomplish everything on 1 save file, and you can do a completely blind playthrough without worrying about missing anything. I have about 85 hours and I've not even finished Act 2, the game is unbelievably epic.

What I really like is you can level easily without too much problem. You can do side quest that help you level between main quest. Unlike some games where leveling is a chore and takes away from the game. The game moves very well. One of my favorite games I've played.
I do have a very major complaint about definitive edition compared to the original. Massive Spoilers At the start of Act 2 they add a bunch of scenes that show you what happened to each of your party members before you join the luminaty as a fish. While these are interesting scenes they completely kill the vibe of the start of Act 2. In the original game you wake up in Nautica as a fish alone and with no idea what is really going on. You then go to see Queen Marina who shows you the ruined devastation of the world and you get this sense that the Last Bastion is all that remains of society. However with seeing all these scenes we are made aware that not only most of your party is fine but also the towns across the world are fine as well
4:10 I love that scene so much. Rab just tries to play it off so poorly like how did that get in there and Jade calls him out. It's teased that it's a porn mag and his backpack is full of them. This is just one of several gems in the story. I couldn't recommend this game enough.
I love this game so much. I played the definitive version back on switch and the whole RPG experience was amazing. I’m really torn whether or not I want to get it on pc and play through the whole game again though since just the main story took me 100+ hrs.
The graphics were good enough to not be a concern to me when I played the switch version. The story structure could be broken into episodes that focus on each town with their problems being resolved. It seems to be a bit on rails, however it isn't much linear either. You can stop around and work on side quests that'll give you good rewards. They are also served in Tickington where you fix all sorts of problems. Some of them harbor powerful bosses like the newly-revived Baramos. There's even a metal king slime who is tired of its brethren being exploited for power gains. So it fused with 2 other metal king slimes to enact revenge as a giant. And after you split them up, they do what they do best........ Run Away! The forging system was quite a step up from the Alchemy Pot I'm familiar with. I was fortunate enough to forge a Supreme Sword of Light +3. I did like how the team got progressively stronger as the story goes on. It's even shown in cutscenes like where we saw Serena had learned Kaswoosh and Multiheal in act 2. Each party member seems to gain a lot of character development throughout the story. The Watchers totally reminded me of the likes of Zeno and Buu from the Dragon Ball series. I did like freely moving in the battle area even though it had no real effects. Each battle was so enjoyable that i never wanted to use the new speed-up feature. The final battle had me on edge of my seat. It was so satisfying to knock out one of the arms to have the giant fireball attack be used against the enemy instead. As someone who hadn't played III yet, I thought the phase 2 theme was from XI S. The symphonic soundtrack was another highlight that made the final boss even better. While this is indeed one of the best DQ games I played, I'm not sure what's my all time favorite now. It's either VIII on 3DS, or the new XI S. Rating: 10/10
Disclaimer: I play on a regular PS4. So it may be that the pro players have a different experience. I got Dragon Quest XI S for the Japanese voice-overs and the orchestral soundtrack. After skipping the pre rendered intro videos, I had a huge shock when I saw the environment. Instead of the beautiful grasslands, which could have been taken from a Ghibli movie, the valleys now look like from a PS2 game. I can't say 100% what scales down the graphics the most, but I think it's because of the number of blades of grass, which has been reduced by about half, making the ground textures shine through much more. For most people this shouldn't be a problem, but for me personally these feel-good moments, where I just stop and absorb the surroundings, were very important. These moments complement this heartwarming story about friendship. Now when I was outside of a city, I thought all the time about how much better it looks on the "old" version and went back to it. At least for me is XI S not the definitive edition.
Your my go to channel for DQ! Congrats on hitting 11k. After playing DQ XI Demo on Switch, I was hooked. I got the full game on Switch plus 1,2,3 trilogy on Switch I + II repro translation on SNES III repro translation on SNES V sealed on DS + PC translation for PCSX2 7 on 3DS, 8 on PS2 9 DS and now im hoping to get XI S on PS5. I'll get IV and VI someday on DS but for now they will have to be roms and repros. CHEERS!
Excellent review! I Loved the original version and loved the switch version even more. After playing the demo on PSN of the definitive edition it looks much better than switch and the 60fps frame rate is awesome. Pre ordered and cannot wait to play this again tomorrow! Well done. Subbed!
I bought this game on switch, and after playing 6-7 hours (I know it is not much, I am talking just about the beginning), I didn’t really liked it and don’t want to continue. For me the main problem is fight loop. So far there were no boss fights and all open world fights are just one-two melee attacks and that’s it. (I stopped at the moment where you use a dog to distract a guard to get in the city). Also it doesn’t have any unique mechanics, for comparison in smt you hit weakness to get additional moves, in persona you hit weakness to do all out attack or gain additional move, in octopath traveller you can boost your skills up to 3 times to gain more damage or more hits. All those things you use EVERY battle, which makes those jrpgs different and unique in terms of combat. What do we have in dragon quest? PepUp which works once per like 15 minutes.(fusion spells from P3 are better). So I have a question, is game gonna become better soon? Or I will still have to just use melee attacks all the time? I mean I saw all those skills in skill tree, but for example fire skill you get in the beginning is straight up useless and does less damage than my greatsword. I started playing octopath traveller 2 instead and you know what, in 4 hours I got like 3 big cool boss fights which were hard and very engaging story. Dragon Quest so far: well you are the chosen one (so cliche) and you should just go somewhere I don’t know. And there was fun scene where you run from the dragon. Well that’s all. You beat a few slimes and trees also. “Fun”. So far I feel like I wasted my money but I am willing to give like 5 more hours to this game. Maybe I didn’t understand something?
I'm downloading the demo right now. I've watches a bunch of reviews tonight and, yours is by far the best review I've seen tonight! Thank you. I've liked, subscribed and hit the bell for all notifications. Keep up the good work! I look forward to seeing more of your videos in the future! I also can't wait to try this demo after work!
Nice man! I downloaded it 3 days ago !! I love it so far just looking at reviews to see if it’s not just me 😭😂 good luck on your journey I’m sure you will like it!
I used to treat the DQ games with a lot of skepticism because of the generic and colorful Toriyama style, but this is the first DQ game I gave a chance and it's honestly a very captivating JRPG with charming characters, solid gameplay and very memorable story that offers interesting twists and turns that you won't expect. I've played JRPGs for over 20 years and this easily goes to the very top of my list. Even if you're doubtful, do give it a chance and it might just grow on you!
@@Prophet1611 bro, the whole point of me not saying it was that I was trying to avoid spoilers for people who might not have played DQ11 yet but yes, Serena’s character really takes off after she inherits Veronica’s powers. I think it’s some of the best character development in the series, really good stuff, plus short-hair Serena is a top tier waifu
I don’t think it’s quite accurate to say that there is no broader context for your journey early in the game. The monsters you fight at the kingsbarrow and, a little later, Jarvis both reference a desire to curry favor with the ‘lord of shadows’. While this isn’t an explicit reference, the script definitely drops hints about the ultimate purpose of your quest.
Just Subbed a DQ fan sent a link because a bunch of people saying the PS4 and Xbox one is a Downgrade that it's a switch Port so he told me you clear this up in the video so I'm still watching :)
I played it, and it was good. I also played it on Japanese dub, and holy crap they are some familiar voices from past anime, and video games. Fun Fact: Best Boy Erik’s JP voice actor also plays Best Boy Roxas and Ventus from Kingdom Hearts.
As a newcomer to the game and the series, I probably shouldn't love it as much as I do. Only 4 or 5 hours in maybe. And this may have been the best purchase I've made all year, and possibly one of the best game purchases ever. Persona 5 was the only game in recent memory I can think of that I felt like this too
Playing in 2023 and the S edition now supports 4k. It looks glorious too. One of the best games I’ve ever played, very emotional and I love my companions.
So many people are whining about the graphics on the Steam forums and yet it's actually better looking than the original unmodded. It really does lend credence to the theory that they're all just trolls or pirates.
As someone who waited to play it on Switch for the extra content honestly getting it on PS4 or any other platform is a hard sell especially since visually its the downgraded graphics, I loved the hell out of the game on Switch and whole heartedly recommend it as one of the most memorable JRPGs on recent years. Absolutely worth your time
I played DQXIS on PC, it was my first time with the game and with the franchise and I absolutely loved it, I don´t know if it´s one of my favourite games, but it´s one of the best games I´ve ever played, so, for everyone who´s doubting to play it, just do it, you won´t regret it. This review described everything that I felt while playing, is this Toriyama´s magic?
I couldn't resist to double dip on this amazing game. Bought a physical copy on the switch on release, passed it, and then last month I bought a new PS4 copy of it at a Goodwill for $12 and I'm currently going through a 2nd play through on my PS5. It plays so much better and looks much nicer on the PlayStation, loading screens are also a lot faster. Would recommend getting it on the PS4 if you don't care for the portability on the Switch.
Congratulations on the 11,000 subscribers milestone Sack! You definitely deserve it! Also, that is really amazing that Square Enix gave you a review copy of the PC version. You are definitely showing off your talent! 😁😄
I really enjoyed playing Dragon quest 11 on the Nintendo switch its an epic game and it has a pretty good story and cool characters with great story's of their past.😃
I love this game. Bought it 3 times. Ps4, switch and ps4s. I even like it more than 5. Played almost all of the dq mainline games and this is by far my favorite. It looks amazing on ps5
Played the Original years ago for 10 hrs on the PC and put it down. Graphics were jaw dropping, but there was something about the game itself that made me not want to play. It wasn't until recently that I figured it out... the audio. Not only was it a midi audio at the time, but that freaking loud a** horn theme that played upon every encounter drove me nuts. Fast forward to today with DQ11S, Project Rebuild graphics mods, foliage enhancement mod, dynamic lighting mod, weather revamp, 4k texture, and the Project IX orchestrated audio overhaul rework for the game... I am HOOKED! And it's all nicely packed on an OLED Steam Deck. The game finally looks outstanding as initially intended and the music is fantastic (enemy encounter theme is infinitely better). My take.... Go with the DE only if youre a PC user. Graphics do take a hit in the Definitive Edition due to porting from the Switch (just look at the heavy loss of grass/foliage assets in the video), however, those with a PC are able to obtain a true Ultimate Definitive experience thanks to a community that really cared and had the passion to make the game right. Everybody else... I just don't know because I probably still wouldn't be able to get passed that original battle theme music let alone the graphics quality downgrade.
My favorite part is how the game gives you the tools to deal with the bosses Let me explain Krystalena has tons of ice attacks but if you go north to a certain camp you can purchase ice earrings that lower the ice damage by 10% if you get each earring to +3 and have them in both slots you can lower all damage from her ny 50% making her a cakewalk. The game gives you these tools for a reason
I asked one of my gamer friends if she’s played of Dragon Quest since she’s a Final Fantasy , Kingdom Hearts and Zelda fan among other games and to my surprise she told me she’s never once heard of the series . This broke my heart but made me want to make her a fan of DQ . Keep in mind this was before Hero was released for Smash Ultimate
In the demo, I died to the griffons which was surprising. I didn't think that I had to farm up a bit in the demo. The demo is so good! Still debating if I should get it now or wait for a deal.
Great review! I'm FINALLY getting around to playing this wonderful game thanks to gamepass for pc! Shared the video with a few friends who are also interested in Dragon Quest XI and haven't played it before. My only wish is that we were able to play online co-op with friends, man that would be amazing.
I have the switch version already so won't pick it up on pc till its on sale. Tried getting my friends and stuff to play the demo, but they're like "nahhh.." its a demo, so I don't get why you won't try it, but can't force them, just be annoying about it every now and then
As someone who has never played Dragon Quest before this one i can say that this game is absolutely worth it. Hell it may be one of my favorite RPGs ever. It actually makes me want to try out the previous games

Downloaded it on Xbox Game Pass and I love it so far. Decided to play the 2D version of the game because I love DQ V and VI and the sprite work reminds me of those games. I'm about 10 hours in and I've enjoyed it so far.
I played this game 140 hours so far… I started playing this as a joke… I don’t know why I keep playing and grinding, but at least it gives me something to do… I still haven’t even beaten the true final boss…
Missed the party on this one but glad I did. Plays great on my series X and I’m happy it’s only glitched out once out of 60 hours since I bought it a couple weeks back. Played a few of the earlier entries but 8 will always be my favorite next to this one.

It looks so insane on Xbox Series X with 4K HDR
Your my go to channel for DQ! Congrats on hitting 11k. After playing DQ XI Demo on Switch, I was hooked.
I got the full game on Switch
plus 1,2,3 trilogy on Switch
I + II repro translation on SNES
III repro translation on SNES
V sealed on DS + PC translation for PCSX2
7 on 3DS, 8 on PS2
9 DS and now im hoping to get XI S on PS5.
Serena is my favorite character in the story, she really grows on you later in the story, if you know you know.
u mean because Veronica dies?
@@Prophet1611 bro, the whole point of me not saying it was that I was trying to avoid spoilers for people who might not have played DQ11 yet but yes, Serena’s character really takes off after she inherits Veronica’s powers. I think it’s some of the best character development in the series, really good stuff, plus short-hair Serena is a top tier waifu
Just in case you didn't know, the demake version comes from the 3ds version of the game.
And they did it better in the 3DS version.
I fall into another category, I'm here to see if it's worth getting over the original despite the downgrade in graphics..
Sylvando can be summarized in two words “gay. Gay?”
is european
But is he gay, or is he just incredibly fabulous?
@@MayHugger I wish I could give you an answer “darling”
@@matthewford878 Oh sweetie, it's fine by me either way.
Sylvan do is the only reason this game is worth playing ^~^
I don’t think it’s quite accurate to say that there is no broader context for your journey early in the game. The monsters you fight at the kingsbarrow and, a little later, Jarvis both reference a desire to curry favor with the ‘lord of shadows’. While this isn’t an explicit reference, the script definitely drops hints about the ultimate purpose of your quest.
Downgrading the graphics quality made me ignore the S version.
Who’s playing the acoustic theme at the end? I love it!
As a newcomer to the game and the series, I probably shouldn't love it as much as I do. Only 4 or 5 hours in maybe. And this may have been the best purchase I've made all year, and possibly one of the best game purchases ever. Persona 5 was the only game in recent memory I can think of that I felt like this too
This video is the reason I requested DQXIS for Christmas, I guess that means Square can be proud of this collab. 😂 Nice work!
Playing in 2023 and the S edition now supports 4k. It looks glorious too. One of the best games I’ve ever played, very emotional and I love my companions.
Short Answer: Yes
Long Answer: Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees
Erik is that dude. He could probably solo the rest of my party. Thank God he's on our side.
This is my favorite rpg this decade and converted me to a DQ fan.
So many people are whining about the graphics on the Steam forums and yet it's actually better looking than the original unmodded. It really does lend credence to the theory that they're all just trolls or pirates.
I loved the game on switch and got full 100%. I even grinded all attributes to 99. Only sad thing is i don't feel like it's really replayable.
Last Dragon Quest Game I played was on the Nintendo DS, it was one of my favorite games. I hope this is as good as that was.
As someone who waited to play it on Switch for the extra content honestly getting it on PS4 or any other platform is a hard sell especially since visually its the downgraded graphics, I loved the hell out of the game on Switch and whole heartedly recommend it as one of the most memorable JRPGs on recent years. Absolutely worth your time
Game looks better on ps4 and runs better too than the switch
I played DQXIS on PC, it was my first time with the game and with the franchise and I absolutely loved it, I don´t know if it´s one of my favourite games, but it´s one of the best games I´ve ever played, so, for everyone who´s doubting to play it, just do it, you won´t regret it.
This review described everything that I felt while playing, is this Toriyama´s magic?
Honestly, they should have given us a free update to the new version if you already had the old game version, freakin cash grabs
I needed so much this explanation, thanks!
I’ll happily fully complete this games multiple times in my lifespan and enjoy it every time
Congrats on 11k man! Keep up the good work of spreading dq!
Thank you!
I wish they did more with Serena like made her in love with the luminary
Thanks, appreciate it!
@@sackchief You are very welcome! Sack is the true legendary Hero of Dragon Quest! 😄🐉🐲
I really enjoyed playing Dragon quest 11 on the Nintendo switch its an epic game and it has a pretty good story and cool characters with great story's of their past.😃
you answered all my questions. thank u!
I played the original but started with dragon warrior monsters. Stopped playing til about 3 weeks ago and got into dq1 - 3 and omg am i in love
I love this game. Bought it 3 times. Ps4, switch and ps4s. I even like it more than 5. Played almost all of the dq mainline games and this is by far my favorite. It looks amazing on ps5
They should add a Kasuga armour set!!!
My favorite part is how the game gives you the tools to deal with the bosses
Let me explain
Krystalena has tons of ice attacks but if you go north to a certain camp you can purchase ice earrings that lower the ice damage by 10% if you get each earring to +3 and have them in both slots you can lower all damage from her ny 50% making her a cakewalk.
I have never played a game like dragon quest before and now for the past week I can’t stop playing it
13:10 it does support 4K
does this game support ultrawide now or no?
The CEO of Dragon Quest fans back at it again with the good content!
I have the switch version already so won't pick it up on pc till its on sale. Tried getting my friends and stuff to play the demo, but they're like "nahhh.." its a demo, so I don't get why you won't try it, but can't force them, just be annoying about it every now and then
I have a friend like that too.
He's stupid
@@jonathann.5754 I get it though, if I look at something and doesn't look interesting, I won't play it
A lot of my friends were never even casual JRPG players. It's hard
Turn based RPGs are niche even if they have DBZ in it. Many people will not touch them.
Whats different in this version?
I played the original version and the Switch version. I’ll probably get this just in hopes that good sales will help us get DQX in the west
As someone who has never played Dragon Quest before this one i can say that this game is absolutely worth it. Hell it may be one of my favorite RPGs ever. It actually makes me want to try out the previous games
Totally worth it. To me, best features are the plush colored characters. Its like watching an animated film, something of which, I'm rather keen.
This is the first game I wish I could play for the first time again.
This honestly is probably my favorite rpg ever
You did such a great job giving a great review that I bought the game snd going to pick it up soon. Also gave you a like on the video and subscribed to your channel! Well be watching more video!
This was a really great review. Thank you, it really helped me make the decision get this during the Golden Week sale! Congratulations on going over your 11k sub goal too, i am definitely subbing for solid content!
I loved that game, so much fun
Idk if anybody in 2024 is still trying to decide but yes, it’s worth it 100000 percent, life changing journey if you’re new to dq
One of my favourite games ever, highly recommend to everyone
It's coming out on gamepass so I'm going to pick it up. Never played a dragon quest game before even tho I'm a big jrpg fan. Just never played them for whatever reason. I look forward to changing that!
I had previously only ever played dragon quest 1 and 2 for the gbc. I'm hoping to pick up dragon quest 3 for gbc one of these days.
With gamepass in excited to jump in here and see what modern dragon quest is like.
I'm so glad this game isn't exclusive to switch anymore.
I bought it millisecond one, but damn I wish I could have opted to buy it on Steam first.
Loving it on my series x, looks amazing with hdr
Downloaded it on Xbox Game Pass and I love it so far. Decided to play the 2D version of the game because I love DQ V and VI and the sprite work reminds me of those games. I'm about 10 hours in and I've enjoyed it so far.
Short answer: Yes, it’s worth it. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.
Wow came here to see if i should buy this after ign review couldn't convince me glad i did i really like the game...THANKS
