This is the game that made me a permanent Mana fan. I had a great time on my first playthrough. Such a great return of a long time Square Enix franchise! I'm hoping this game did well enough for Square to consider a sequel!
After finishing the game in December, I just couldn’t believe how much this game still lingered after all this time! Felt it was the right time to make this review!
Thanks for making this video. This game has been sitting unplayed in my library for ~2 years -- aaand I'm realizing your channel name becomes more and more appropriate to my experience
I still play this game at 2023 and i still love the franchise 😍 i create 3 teams i like them the first is : Duran (Duelist),Riesz (Starlancer) and Kevin (Monk Warrior) The Second : Hawkeye(Rogue) Riesz (Dragon knight) and Duran (Paladin) the 3rd : Kevin,Angela and Charlotte
I played the SFC version in 1999 and again in 2012 and again in the Collection of Mana in 2019. I was shocked how they meticulously converted every 2D map into a 3D environment. That with the combat being much faster, fluid and much, much more fun…the excellent visuals, the wonderfully remixed music…this became the game of the decade for me. Only Skyrim and Xenoblade Chronicles come close for me.
Adding the extra difficult settings bumped this game up to 9/10 for me. -1 for lack of multi-console multiplayer but meh that's what the original is for!!!
I love the thoroughness of this review. Note, I am here upon the current e-shop sale on this very title. Thank you for your time spent on this review. It was a pleasure playing through an emulated version of the original game. When I have confidence in my backlog management, I may snag this one as well.
This game looks and plays better than I thought it would. Plus orchestrated tracks from secret of mana are a definite plus for me. I'll add this one to the backlog.
I platinumed this game back in '20, but I'm here, watching this review, gearing up for the release of VoM, trying to resist the urge to go back for the sake of nostalgia! Great video!
Did you know that for the soundtrack for Secret of Mana, composer Hiroki Kikuta was allowed use of 8 audio channels? From what I've read, the SNES's SPC700 only has 8 channels, which is why sound effects in Secret of Mana would cause instruments in the music to drop out. In contrast, for Seiken Densetsu 3, Hiroki Kikuta was limited to only 6 channels. Though nostalgia is at play, this is probably why I personally always preferred the Secret of Mana soundtrack, but I also believe this is a direct answer to why the respective remake's orchestrated soundtracks are a hit in Trials of Mana and a miss in Secret of Mana. In any case, Hiroki Kikuta tried to make the best possible music in these formats, but what if he designed a soundtrack to be performed in a studio? For that, look no further than the soundtrack to Soukaigi, a 1998 PS1 ARPG that was never released outside of Japan.
I knew it was special when the game was still in my mind months after I'd beaten it! Replaying through it again for this review just made it so much more evident how special this game is!
Great review Alex. You definitely are the right one for getting me hooked on this game (im two years late, but whtevr) Xeed should be at the helm of more of these kinds of remakes or spiritual successors. Thanks for fixing us up with a music comparison, too. I love it when a reviewer puts in the effort to call attention to this. Happy New Year!
Great job on this review! I just finished Trials of Mana recently and it's just one of those video games that just clicked with me. It has a lot of charm and I like how simple and satisfying the combat is. Honestly the only gripe I had with it is the party AI not dodging boss attacks.
I was infatuated with this game the moment it was announced, and I spent way too much time with the demo on all three platforms xD This game is just enchanting, and in my personal opinion, one of the most visually stunning games in recent memory, and a sheer joy to play. I feel like the voice direction problem (actors given no context or visual information to go off) is something that's been sadly common in recent games, perhaps a side effect of limited budget with simultaneous international releases? Either way, I'm happy to see the Mana series back in full swing, hopefully the positive response and solid sales will get us some new Mana titles at this level of quality!
@@BacklogBattle I was so happy when I found out it hit 1 mil! The team behind it made something really special, I'm glad it's been resonating with people

9:58 The slider isn't "use class strikes as soon as you're able". It's "use class strikes without resource restrictions". Most of the sliders are about conserving resources like MP or class strike gauge which is why it says don't use class strikes if it drops the gauge below 25%, 50%, and 100%. The behavior style is more useful in determining how aggressive or supportive the AI is. In general I found the AI to be decent, they usually can dodge out of area attacks, but not always which is probably intentional to get you to use support skills.
NGL, I actually dig the English voices in this game. Everyone sounds unique, line reads are usually good, and the only one I was lukewarm on was Riez, and even she was never bad, just kinda flat as opposed to stoic.

I was about 20 hours into this on the Switch and had to drop it. My experience with it was nothing like yours. I hated it. I found it bland and nothing special. The vocal work was terrible. What drove me over the edge was the excessive loading screens. At one point when you first change your class it goes through 6 loading screens! Ugh!!! I keep passing on this one during sales and regretting it... One day lol
Psst! It's on sale RIGHT NOW on PSN and eShop!

Thank you for watching the whole thing! I didn’t even think it was going to be this long!
Ugh!!! I can’t even imagine playing this game through once let alone 3 times for the full experience.
I appreciate sharing your experience! I think it’s invaluable for people to know other perspectives! That said, you articulated your points well while expressing your frustrations in a constructive way, so I have to commend that!
I do wonder if you experienced it on a different platform if the loading wouldn’t have compounded your frustrations, though it just didn’t sound like aspects of the game didn’t jive with you.
Wait...isn't 20 hours enough to complete the story? (postgame doesn't count)
"in an effort to sound cute and adorable"
And failing MISERABLY. God I hate Charlotte's voice, same with Tama in WoFF.
