    Taylor has said this lp is about her journey from grief to depression to drug use, and slowly back to wanting to work and hope.

      That's a great comparison. She's got such a fantastic voice. She also reminds me a little of Ann Wilson in that regard.

    A glimpse of hope for me in this video is that Taylor sitting on the couch (on which she was almost unconscious) with a guitar in the end and plays which, I think, could represents that stage in a whole loss => grief => depression process when she started to channel it all in her music. And she said a lot of times in her interviews that it was really therapeutic and helped her a lot to get out of depression. She is a really great artist who creates a high art!
    Love your reactions and analysis so much, they are always so deep and compassion and appreciative!

    Great to see you back with TPR because I think they represent more then just music, they are art. The way they use music, lyrics, images, feelings all intertwined is something you rarely maybe never see in modern music. Also the references to other music is mostly present in their video's. Somehow the way several people seem to bump into Taylor reminded me a lot of Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve. And I also believe that the high part is only partial referring to substance abuse (something Taylor is certainly not denying about her bad years) but mostly is about an emotional high which she had lost.

      Thanks Robert. I'm glad you liked this one. And I totally agree wit you that they represent more than just music. In fact, I'd even go so far to say that folks who only listen to the album but don't watch the videos are missing important parts of their art. I know you've looked at our other reactions, and like you, I love a lot of the references they put in their lyrics and videos. This one is just brutal to watch. It's so stark and hopeless. Even her face at the end is depressed resignation.

    I think this last album, Death by Rock and Roll, is the best of an already awesome discography. I am soooo looking forward to seeing TPR in the UK at the end of October.

      I totally agree. I think "Death By Rock and Roll" and Mammoth WVH's debut album are my two favorite albums of the last several years. I've listened to both of them front to back dozens of times. I hope you have a great time at their concert! Come back and let us know how it went!

      @@LikeMindedLunatics TPR were awesome. Taylor was on top form, very strong vocals, really worked the crowd and the guys behind were just stellar in their playing. My third time seeing TPR and they just keep getting better and better. I am an old, old school rocker, brought up on Zep, Purple, Rainbow, Sabbath. TPR can justifiably, IMHO, live in that kind of company.

    The image that struck me was how the others on the sofa had people help them off of it and she didn’t. I call my depression a black hole in the astronomical sense. Heavy, emitting no light, crushing, and nearly impossible to escape.

      @LikeMindedLunatics  Рік тому +2

      Yeah that's such a hard scene to watch. I think Ladi also called it a "black hole" too. It just sucks you in and you can't escape.

    An emotionally powerful track on one of the most emotionally powerful albums ever made. Though, yes, Taylor has specified that she was deep in substance abuse at this point in her life. In one interview she also implied that she had a near-death experience, though she didn't give any details and seemed unsettled by even thinking about it.

    • @LikeMindedLunatics
      @LikeMindedLunatics  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, I've seen some of those interviews. This album is incredibly powerful, and Ladi and I have talked about whether we can figure out a way to do a reaction to the progression of songs on the album because I think the tracks perfectly represent one person's journey through loss, grief, depression and then ends with a hint of hope.

      @@LikeMindedLunatics Honestly their entire discography has shown a profound journey through despair, and --so far-- ending on a hopeful note (which I dearly hope will blossom further in future works). Songs like Under The Water, Kill Me, Oh My God, The Devil's Back, Waiting For A Friend, and Already Dead were devastating glimpses of Taylor's struggles even before the loss of Cornell and Kato. I've been working on and off on a playlist restructuring the bulk of their discography into one singular music tale of despair and recovery.

    I never rat too much into the song because I love it just because of the poetry in the dark poetry and Taylor's voice. Her vocal cords is amazing, but now seeing this like I'm connecting the thoughts. She had said that after the death of chris cornell and her producer kato She did go through some substance abuse. So maybe this song is a reflection to that. Maybe she's all three of those taylors in the video

  • @criwall
    @criwall Рік тому +3

    I think you are spot on, this is Taylor at her darkest moment, almost ready to give up on everything, so the placement in the middle of the record makes perfect sense. I knew what the song was about, but damn this video is extremely disturbing, and even if you don't know the backstory you can feel the emotions and meaning of the song. In fact I just now noticed that in the end of the song her motionless body is starting to raise up in a unatrual way and the picture is starting to fade to white, with the religious imagery they sometimes have in their songs that definitly looks like it's ment to show her OD'ing. Especially since even if she hasn't said it outright she has hinted at that the substance abuse she fell into nearly took her life. You need to play one of the happier (or at least more hopeful) songs from the album now for Ladi (Rock and roll heaven perhaps? No official video but I actually realy like this fan video since it incorporate a lot of footage of Taylor as a child, Kato, and a lot of other references to the lyrics ua-cam.com/video/8ORd_Lv8E2E/v-deo.html)

      Thank you so much. I'm glad this reaction resonated with you. I (this is Mark) have been listening to that album over and over since it came out, and I think it's one of the best rock and roll albums I've ever heard, as well as being one of the most starkly beautiful representations of loss, grief, and depression.
      Yeah, I noticed her lifeless body, too. It's really disturbing.
      And you're absolutely right. I need to let Ladi watch a happier. one.
      We did react to "Makes Me Wanna Die," and that one's not exactly "happy," but it's not quite as depressing. ua-cam.com/video/o9vx_eQOEh8/v-deo.html

    Great reaction as always ✌ I recommend listening to the new TPR album (or EP) "OTHER WORLDS" - some kind of footnote or coda to Death by RnR... there' you find "Got So High" as Remix and Original version along with a lot of acoustic versions of album songs PLUS some interesting new interpretations of Chris Cornell songs (The Keeper, Loud Love & Halfway There) and even a David Bowie cover (Quicksand) - great. This collection shows Taylor from a different side, more acoustic, less heavy but even more intense.
    This new video of Got So High is part of the promotion for Other Worlds I guess.

    About the itchy feeling. Depending on the drug, it could be physical reaction. I’m allergic to some opiates and it’s a full body itch. Or, being in depression can be like wearing a burlap bag all over, including covering your head and face. It’s dark, smelly and like an itch you can’t scratch.
