Finally a tutorial for a shawl with a foundation chain beginning! I have loved this pattern for a long time but always preferred a rectangular shawl so I never made it. Now I am a happy hooker😍💕
Some fdc tips for everyone: 1. To avoid the hole at the beginning fdc, I only ch 2, drawing up the second chain a little then work my 1st fdc into the second chain from the hook; the ch 2 does NOT count as a stitch. 2. To avoid holes along the bottom edge, work fdc under 2 loops of the ch 1 you made in the previous fdc. 3. To keep foundation chain from "arching" I insert my hook under both loops of the ch-1 of the previous fdc, draw up the loop, extending it slightly before making the ch 1, then completing the stitch. This will keep the bottom the same tension/length as the top of the stitch. To avoid confusion, I transcribed the entire pattern for myself (yes, it took a little while) after restarting the first row (after the 201 fdc) FOUR times due to confusion over the non-standard terminology used. The pattern's "shell" says to make (dc, ch 1, dc). This is normally called a v-stitch. the other v-stitches (ch 3 between and ch 5 between) I labeled as medium and large v-stitches, respectively. anywhere it called for 3dc or 5dc in the same stitch/space (normally called fans) I labeled as a small or large fan. Saved myself from having to frog anymore rows. 🙂

I'm a really big weirdo that loves to play with her yarn and find out all it can do. I've been cutting macramé cord and staining it with tea and coffee and recently tried purple onion skins. I separated it into 3 tiny strands together. This pattern makes GORGEOUS lace! and the staining makes it look antique. yes there are knots but I used magic knots and honestly it adds to the charm. I wish i could post a photo here. oh and i use a 3.5 mm hook

This is such a fantastic tutorial! Thank you for making it short and sweet but just filled with tips and info. You are a wonderful teacher! I’m not sure if you’re still responding to comments on this but I am hoping so. I’ve started this to turn into a kimono so it’s beginning chain is only 121 and not as wide as your stole. I have started it twice with the same 3 weight yarn - first with the brand recommended size 5 hook and then with a 4.5. In both cases, my foundation dc ends up arching so that I have a rainbow shape and the foundation is much smaller than the completed rows. In both cases, I finished through two full sets of skulls to row 20ish and my work ripples considerably and doesn’t lie flat at all, like yours does. The biggest rippling happens on the (forehead)(base) rows, almost like there are too many stitches and yet, I see that yours has no such issue. Anyway, I’m bummed because it’s not working out so I was hoping you might have some thoughts on what I might do differently. If you are able to answer, thank you in advance! If not, that’s ok too! I can put this project in the naughty corner for a bit until I can brave another go at it using the original pattern along with some of your techniques. ☺️ Thank you again for the time you’ve put into this!
Not being familiar with the foundation double crochet I’m really struggling with starting this project. You explain everything well except for when it comes to where to put the 2nd double foundation crochet stitch. Wish you would have shown the stitching a few more times. Because I’m stuck at stitch 3. Guess I’ll figure it out eventually. I hope so.

I personally think this is definitely wide enough for a blanket (over 70” in the worsted weight yarn for me) and then I would just crochet the repeat rows 8-23 until it’s as long as I wanted it to be. What if I don’t want it quite that long, how many stitch count for each section? Like I might want it longer or shorter. Hello! I do say how much yarn I used at :27 of the tutorial. 1446 yards and 849g. I would suggest buying a yarn you can just buy more of if needed. I would start out with about 1000g of the yarn you choose. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Is there any alternative to doing the alternative double crochet you do at the ends? Every time I try it creates a very loose stitch from where I held the first loop on the crochet stick

The pattern writer choses to call that part of the pattern a “shell” it saves on writing two words every single time. And it is consistent with her other patterns. I do my tutorials along with the pattern to save on confusion when people use the tutorial and written instructions together. I know what a V stitch is. Thank you for watching.
I think shes amazing and her tutorials are the best ... you can slow the video down .. way down if need be without losing any of the pattern.. on iPhone while watching tutorials go to the upper right corner there's three little dots click on that scroll down to where it says play back and you have multiple options of slow speeds and faster speeds
She is just following the pattern written by someone else, who gave her permission to do a video on it. The pattern writer decided to call it a "shell". So Jonna calls it so as well l, for those following on the written pattern, so it isn't confusing. She knows what a v stitch is. Jeez. If it really bugs you, I guess you could find the person she credits as writing it so you can lecture them about it. If it's that dire a situation for you.

You need a total of 201 stitches. So you will need a turning chain. You can chain 203 and dc into the 4th chain (counting the ch 3 as a stitch)

Hi I'm using a super chunky yarn so if I follow your count it would be approx 8 foot. Can you let me know what the stitch multiple is? I kind of counted somewhere around a 10 count but can you please confirm?

I really want to make this pattern tall rather than wide. Is there a certain multiple i can work from. Im not sure if im making sense because im fairly new to crochet.

The pattern does include it. I have the pattern. But paid patterns have extra information the tutorial doesn’t have so you get more for your money.

Your 'shell stitch' is a v stitch
Correct it is a v stitch. But in the pattern it is a “shell” for ease of repeats.

That's not a shell stitch lol. that's a V stitch dc, ch1, dc. look it up. But thank you for doing this tutorial!
The pattern writer choses to call that part of the pattern a “shell” it saves on writing two words every single time. And it is consistent with her other patterns. I do my tutorials along with the pattern to save on confusion when people use the tutorial and written instructions together.

Honestly you go a little too fast.
I think shes amazing and her tutorials are the best ... you can slow the video down .. way down if need be without losing any of the pattern.. on iPhone while watching tutorials go to the upper right corner there's three little dots click on that scroll down to where it says play back and you have multiple options of slow speeds and faster speeds
Those “shells” are not shells. They areV stitches.
She obviously knows the difference but is trying to make it easier for us.
She is just following the pattern written by someone else, who gave her permission to do a video on it. The pattern writer decided to call it a "shell". So Jonna calls it so as well l, for those following on the written pattern, so it isn't confusing. She knows what a v stitch is. Jeez. If it really bugs you, I guess you could find the person she credits as writing it so you can lecture them about it. If it's that dire a situation for you.
