As a nurse I can tell you another reason why broth-based soups like chicken noodle are good when you’re sick is because the salty broth helps reduce inflammation in the throat by pulling fluid out from the inflamed tissue (same reason you’re told to gargle with salt water).
My own personal theory of why nutritious meals help you to get over sickness: Your body _needs_ nutrients--proteins especially--when you're sick so that your immune system can get all the resources it needs to do its job to the max. Starve a cold? BAH! Sickness is not a time for dieting! Stuff your face with all three American food groups: proteins, carbs, and fat! Your immune system will thank you! 😁
THANK YOU SO MUCH! My boyfriend was sick and I've never made chicken soup but I wanted to treat him. It ended up with tons of flavor and he really liked it ❤
Love your soup. The only thing I do different is cook the noodles aldente seperate, Add them to the bowl and ladle soup over the top. I always store them separately. That way U never get mushy noodles
Hmmm. I like that idea. I hate the mushy noodles, but with two of us, we always have left overs. I like adding the soup to the precooked, perfect noodles. Thank you!
Making this chicken noodle soup again because it's the best and using this recipe to teach my ten-year-old daughter to cook as well. She's very excited 😊 to be helping cook in the kitchen. Thanks again for your recipe and know that this Mama and daughter from Texas are very thrilled to be cooking a fantastic recipe together ❤️.
My Egyptian boyfriend taught me to add lime to chicken soup, and oh my god, amazing! Apparently chicken soup is usually served with a lime slice in an Egyptian home, and now I’m hooked!
Made this for dinner tonight since the weather in Texas is everywhere, and it was a hit ! Instead of 8 cups of chicken broth, I did 4 c. chicken broth and 4 c. bone broth. I didn't have egg noodles so I used garden rotini noodles. This is my 2nd recipe I've made from your channel that my family loves. I'm a new subscriber, so I can't wait to try out some more 🤗
Just finished making this. I happened to defrost 3 chicken breasts I had already cooked in onion, fresh garlic of course, paprika, pepper, and a little turmeric. Looked for a new soup recipe and this popped up. Perfect amount of chicken. I didn't have any bone broth. Something I started making this last year. So all chicken broth. 8 cups didn't look like near enough, so I added 4 more cups. Used just about 2 1/2 cups egg noodles. Happened to have some frozen mixed peas, lima beans, carrots and peas. Worked perfectly with my whole onion and 7 cloves of garlic. Used 2 bay leaves too. Toward the end, I added a dash of basil and dillweed along with a little salt and a lot of pepper. Best I've made yet. I bet rotini noodles were great in yours!
I'm so glad you advised everyone to add lemon. I make an incredible chicken noodle soup and my secret is the fresh lemon juice! I love it so much, I also squeeze extra in my bowl after serving! Learned some new tricks from you today that I'll be trying! Thanks for the video
Hey Jenna - try some leeks in your chicken soup and always in stuffing - with a combo of olive oil and butter- amazing. Also substitute marjoram for oregano. Thought you would be someone who would appreciate the options. Organic lemons are yum!
I'm making this for my daughter who is sick right now. I usually just throw it together myself but I've been having so much success with your recipes, that I thought I'd try yours and it is so flavourful! I have never failed one of your recipes. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Rotisserie chicken works wonderful for chicken soup, and I like using the baby carrots. I leave the celery out, because my family doesn’t like it. But it’s still wonderful when you’re not feeling well
Yes, I agree that spice drawer was the cat's meow! I think this recipe is amazing and I am a shredder of the chicken myself also. Lastly what would bring this up a notch to even be more amazing is a cup or 2 of heavy cream! I got that tip from another famous chef on blogger land! I tried it before and after and oh my did it ever raise it up a notch. Thank you again for another amazing video.
I just made it for my children today, and they just love it, I cooked the whole chicken apart, and later use the same chicken and chicken broth for the soup. Simply delicious ❤❤❤
I like the way you emphasize words and do the little bounce. It makes you more like able. Not that we don’t like you. You make baking and now more so cooking fun and easy.

I adore this soup. I usually start by making stock with chicken frames, which still have their breasts on here in Hong Kong. Bone-in skin-on drumettes or drumsticks work as well; just make sure you chop everything in the middle so the bone marrow flavours the soup. Then I pull out all the meat and throw it back in just before serving. I also like to spice it up with thyme, oregano, sage, rosemary and nutmeg, i.e. chicken seasoning (which isn't easy to find here). Parmesan cheese or cream adds flavour and richness, but lemon juice and lemon zest do sound delicious and I'm going to give them a try.
My husband I both have doozy colds so chicken soup needed to be made right away. I have followed you for ages and know you never disappoint. I just finished and eating my first bowl!! The lemon addition was phenomenal. I only had fresh parsley so I added about 2 tsp’s Herbes de Province. Your recipe is perfect and it’s truly delicious. I used boneless thighs 😉. Can’t wait for hubby to try this.
Chicken soup is SO classic and personal! I use lemon zest as well, and sometimes leeks, parsnips, or tunips; whatever looks good in the produce aisle. This time of year on the East coast, I forage for Ramp (sometimes called spring onion), a wild leafy onion flavored green and add it to the soup. Adds a delicate onion flavor to die for!
@@jimcowan8770 Actually, I have a Welsh recipe that translates to Chicken and Leek Sick Soup! It was handed down through my family for generations! I've looked online for this recipe, but my ancestors seem to have the original. I think the closest is Scottish Cock-A-Leekie
I make homemade soup every week. I love soup, but I am allergic to celery. Making my own soup allows me to add what I want. I like cubed chicken in soup because of texture. I do add lemon to some of my soups and love the freshness it gives. This week, I making courgette soup on Thursday….cause it’s a green soup!
I tried this recipe and it is absolutely delicious!!! It is usually difficult to make such a yummy soup without bones since bones contain flavour but this is just a heaven combo and very flavourful! By the way the lemon at the end is beyond amazing, thank you so much John
What i also really love in a soup like this is Swiss chard. The bright red is just * mwah cheffkiss * I think its mainly the color that i love so much, and its generally appreciated by family and friends too,
great recipe. I substituted the noodles for potatoes. This is my first time adding lemon to a soup, it was awesome! Thanks! My daughter who is 11 made your macaroons from your video and she saw what I was watching, she said "oh, that's the macaroon guy." Thanks for all your hard work in sharing your talent with the world!
I love Chicken soup and I always make my mum's chicken soup, it is so comforting. I use a whole chicken but once it is cooked I half it and put one half in the fridge to make a rice dish with it, the next day. I cook the noodles extra and add them in the plate and then the soup. Your soup looks beautiful.
Sorry the twins are not feeling well, John. Hope they feel better soon. That yummy soup and a chocolate treat will have them better in no time. Sure looks good. Thank you for sharing 💙💙
John, I obsessively watched all your videos the minute I found you. Love your vibe, you’re so so likable and your recipes make my mouth water! Trying this soup this Wednesday ❤
Made this yesterday. Wow! The chicken soup of my dreams. The addition of the lemon is paramount. No lemon=dull. Thank you for fulfilling my longing for a delicious, satisfying chicken soup. Yum!
trying this right now! thank you for a simple recipe that doesn't involve 60,000 unnecessary ingredients, chicken noodle soup should not have to be a complicated thing! I have been really enjoying cooking for the past year or so, just something I got into late in life but really really enjoy. I find that I really love the more basic recipes because the are foolproof and give me a base dish that I can then modify and build on to make it my own if I choose.EDIT: I made it and it came out excellent! this will now be on regular circulation around here! thanks again for posting.
We use store bought rotisserie chicken for chicken noodle soup (like have chicken on day one, then use the rest for chicken noodle soup on day 2). It’s so flavorful!
I'm sick with a cold right now and I am making chicken noodle soup for my family. My brain completely blanked on what goes in a chicken noodle soup, so thank you for this!!!!
I make chicken soup at least 3x a month sometimes more in flu season. Lots of great tips here never would have thought of lemon. Can’t wait to try this way!! Thank you!!!!! Also….shredded chicken for the Win! Definitely rustic Sometimes I even throw the carrots in whole if I’m in a hurry. Lol. ❤
I made this recipe tonight. It turned out so delicious. I used a rotisserie chicken to make it a little easer to make. I will make this all the time now. Thanks so much for posting it.
Lmao “I’m still making you chop the garlic “ with the spoon and glare . I love You John. FYI if you’re a lazy mom like me , you can cut your veggies smaller and put them In your crockpot and cook this in the crockpot 4 hrs on low or 6 hrs on high . I still pre cook the veggies in the stove often then put them into the crock .
Got a sick kid at home who requested soup, so I threw this together this evening. Used 2 bone in, skin on leg quarters that I browned/rendered before the veggies, but otherwise followed this pretty close. It turned out wonderfully, thanks for the video.
Thank you, John. Now I have something wonderful to take to my friend who has covid. I've never made chicken soup before and I'm really, really happy with this. (I skipped the noodles.) I think my friend will love it! Thank you, John!
Omg! I had no idea about the “heat” from the “steam". Thank you! I always just lay in my bed slowly withering away. Lol. Basically hoping it runs it’s course faster. I don’t have energy or appetite when I’m sick. But will suck it up next time so I have energy to fight the virus and heat to “help kill” the virus 🦠 Thanks for the Teacher and Dad advice.
Fabulous! I would also recommend Turkish orzo chicken soup made with chicken stock with or without chicken pieces. Lemon is a must obviously. Good for cold and flu. ❤️❤️
Wow, what a flashback. In grad school, there was an older couple from Cyprus who had a tiny restaurant on my street and they had that orzo chicken soup on the menu once a week. It was heavenly. Thanks for the reminder.
Thank you for posting this recipe. All the men in my house have colds and need extra TLC. Followed recipe as directed and it turned out fantastically! Served with some sourdough garlic toast and they are on the road to better health. God bless and Merry Christmas to you and your family. Note: next time I'll use lite and dark meat.
The LEMON. YES! Add the whole lemon. Thank you! That was so delicious. I prepared it today for my family. My mother in law served herself twice. That’s how you know a dish passed. Edit: I cooked the noodles separately. Served noodles first then the soup on top. Added dry rosemary, fresh thyme, parsley.
There’s nothing like stopping what you are doing and watch a video from John. It’s cooking therapy. I’m intrigued by cooking raw breasts in the soup to start and the lemon. I will do both next time I prepare my soup. Although matzoh balls are my favorite I love noodles too.
I agree it is cooking therapy. Good food with a happy upbeat presentation heals all that may ail you 😊. Plus I believe that happy energy & love is going into the food. 👍😻. Time for a snack, lol
Hey, I made this one! I printed off the step by step recipe from your site, and I gave it a try. This was the best chicken noodle soup I have ever had, not kidding. The lemon juice was genius, I've never heard of such a thing, but it created an awesome good flavor. I shared your site with some elderly relatives and they made it too the other day, they loved it. I cannot wait to get my copy of your cookbook. I hope it has lots of pictures.
Holy Wow!! So yummy! Every season was perfect. I followed exact recipe. I made it for my parents, they absolutely loved it! Thank you friend. Excited to be a part of your channel. Thanks again!! Big thumbs up...Woot Woot!!!
Awesome, I've never seen what I like to call "American-style" chicken noodle soup served with lemon. I kinda grew up eating this style of chicken noodle from cans or school lunches, or even the salty Lipton packets with thin short noodles. Yet I used to doctor the latter up with lemon juice and a boiled egg lol. The other form of sicky day chicken soup was made by my parents in a nice, garlicky rice porridge/ congee, with plenty of chicken, ginger, and of course lemon juice. Lemon is one of chicken's best friends, apart from garlic and salt. 😂 Definitely looking forward to making a real homemade chicken noodle soup myself.
This is sooo good. Everything you make is delicious. Why did i just find out that you are part greek?🙃 Im also greek and i wish you would do more greek recipess😍😍 love you so much🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷❤❤❤
I really liked the addition of lemon and dill. It really helped the taste of the box broth I used. You also helped me bake my grandsons first birthday cake last week and it turned out amazing! Thanks!
As a side note you can pre squeeze lemons. if you put the juice into very small ice cube trays, they can be frozen. Then put into a ziplock bag in the freezer for later.. Also small icecubes make great lemonaid too (right in the glass)
Omg John, thank you for sharing!! This looks so delicious and comforting, I can’t wait to try it and all the other goodies in your new cookbook! Congrats and thank you again!! 💜💜💜
I always add fresh lemon juice to my chicken noodle soup. I use clusky noodles but my recipe is very similar to yours. Everything you make looks delicious and your recipes always turn out good.
Omg! I've never done chicken noodle soup so I looked up some recipes since I started feeling ill with the flu. I followed your recipe and it came out sooo good! Thank you so much! Definitely subscribing on UA-cam and learning more recipes from you! 💜

O.M.G.This looks and sounds amazing.Winter is almost here so this is going to be on the menu as it's a meal in a bowl. I do prefer the chicken shredded and having the lemon zest and juice will give it a whole new flavour. First time seeing this channel but I will be back. Thanks for pisting.👍👍😁😁
I just found you. You are forever in my life. Your website is terrific. My entire family thanks you for just making life so simple with your recipes. No more wracking my brains how to do this, what brand, where to buy. You solved the problem.🙂
I once had turkey and rice soup, which is usually boring, but it was served with a side plate of cilantro, lime and avocado. Game Changer! Now I'm making as often as I can
I hand shred my chicken for chicken soup. I use big, but not jumbo pasta shells for the noodles. But unless I'm making it for a lot of people I never cook the shells in the soup. I leave it separate so they never become mushy. Lastly I make a Pico de Gallo, and top the soup off with that. It adds a little kick which feels good when you aren't feeling well, as well as vitamin C.
I think this is my favorite video I’ve seen from you 😊 not the recipe (which is wonderful and I’m currently making), but your interaction, advice and personal opinions are making this video memorable. Thank you!!
One more thing John I like to cook my noodles separately and then place them on the bottom of the bowl and label the soup over them it cuts down on the amount of starch in the broth
Thank u John for this delicious scrumptious recipe. I accidentally turn to your video and I have been looking for old fashion chicken noodles soup..My mother always cooked soups. I definitely will be cooking this recipe for my family. be bless 💓
Just made this recipe. It was so delicious and simple, I was quite taken aback by the flavor! Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe. Perfect for Winter.
I wa feeling under the weather and I had to go to work the next day. Luckily I had made this soup the night before, and let me tell you, this soup recipe saved my life. I felt brand new again after having this delicious soup. Thank you
that looks absolutely delicious....I am looking for soup recipes since it's getting chilly here in new caney, Texas. and I am Latina, I love my cultured soups but I wants to learn new recipes. thank you for sharing
We cook the noodles separately, Al dente. Then spoon the soup over the noodles in the individual bowls. I hate overcook noodles as well as brown cooked eggs! We like tarragon along with thyme in chicken or turkey soup. I think the tarragon sweetens it a bit. Love your recipes & been binging on them this week! Happy New Year 🎉
You make chicken soup the same way my mother made it. Over time, I've found I like chicken noodle soup with some tamari sauce over rice noodles. Kind of like Cup a Noodle only healthy.
Ths looks beyond delicious and is what’s for dinner tomorrow night. I just had a thought. I have the Le Creuset matte white pots and replaced their knobs with the gold ones. Le Creuset also makes copper knobs and would go beautifully in your stunning kitchen. Bon Appetite 🥰
Thanks Alot! Now,. You guessed it! I Want a bowl of chicken soup! Haha! First of all,. I would never think to cook raw chicken with veggies! But I Love the lemon! I Always put lemon in my chicken dishes! I cook buttered noodles & I add chicken,. I cook my chicken,. Add lemon & butter, salt pepper,. When it’s done I let it cool,. That’s when I cook my noodles, I love the wide egg noodles the best,. Then I mix it all together! I don’t add anything else! I like it kinda plain,. Lots of lemon & salt & pepper,. Oh,.& Lots of butter,. Probably half a stick of Real Butter,. I don’t do fake butter! Haha! Great recipe,. Thanks! I definitely try it!!! I could Almost taste it from here! Yummy!
Yummy! Going to make this asap! I prefer chunky shredded chicKen for things like a rustic soups or if it’s going in a sauce over pasta. I like chunks or strips if it’s for chicken and rice or fajitas. I don’t care much for super shredded chicken where it’s all stringy ☺️
Please tell me we will get a garden video (or several).....id love to see what you grow and how you grow it! This soup looks amazing btw. Also I often cook my noodles or rice separately from the soup to ensure it doesn't turn into more of a stew.
I prepared this recipe today and it came out delicious. I'm surprised the flavor was exquisite. Thank you for all your recipes I love everything you cook and bake. Thursday is time for one of your recipes a pie will do perfectly.
I have been down with Covid the pass 7 days and have been craving chicken noodle soup! Had to do a few substitutions due no shopping however I did have the basics. My house smells wonderful and can not wait till dinner….making a pan of cornbread with onion and hoping my tastebuds don’t fail me. Thanks for sharing this video! Cheers,

In your crockpot and cook this in the crockpot 4 hrs on low or 6 hrs on high . I still pre cook the veggies in the stove often then put them into the crock .
I've made this TWICE already! My boyfriend absolutely loves this chicken noodle soup. Best on a cold day. 🙌🏽
How long do u cook the chicken for
Got a sick kid at home who requested soup, so I threw this together this evening.
This comment made me smile. Your friend is lucky to have someone like you in their life. 😊
Channel of cake 🌹
@@qwkimball you are welcome.Try making it. You won’t regret
Welcome 🌹to channel of cake 👍
@@noratameu8674 Aaaah the last one
I agree it is cooking therapy. Good food with a happy upbeat presentation heals all that may ail you 😊. Plus I believe that happy energy & love is going into the food. 👍😻. Time for a snack, lol
The lemon will takes it to next level
agreed. never thought of cooking the whole breast in the soup, or of adding lemon juice at the end for that matter. but I'm making this tonight.
Something about this channel that is so soothing and comforting haha
Everyone at home has a cold so decided to make your chicken noodle soup and they all loved it! Everyone had 2nd servings. Thank you!
Made this without the lemon bc I didnt have any and it was so good!! Me my husband and my 1 year old loved it!
Holy Wow!!
I’ve made this recipe so many times!! It’s great for a weeks worth of meals in a busy family and so delicious 😋
Thank you for sharing this. My husband is sick and this hearty chicken noodle soup made him feel better.
Hi friend John💏,..woow that's amazing cooking & look yummy too💖👌, absolutely impressive & awesome fried noodles🍜recipe🌶🥚🦐🧂. Thanks for sharing!👍@😍🤗
I love this soup. I use the Amish made noodles. They don't turn mushy. I freeze it in single serve portions and it never gets mushy noodles.
This is sooo good. Everything you make is delicious. Why did i just find out that you are part greek?🙃 Im also greek and i wish you would do more greek recipess😍😍 love you so much🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷❤❤❤
Absolutely amazing. Just made it for a group of friends who are sick and it’s the best they’ve ever had!
I really liked the addition of lemon and dill. It really helped the taste of the box broth I used. You also helped me bake my grandsons first birthday cake last week and it turned out amazing! Thanks!
I just discovered your channel! Picking up a sick kiddo from college, and this is already prepped and ready for when we get home. Thanks again.
Ok i’ve never watched your videos before but I love your kitchen decor and you seem to have a great personality.
So good ❤
I added corn starch in the beginning when frying the onion and celery
And added whipping cream later
I loved it
As a side note you can pre squeeze lemons. if you put the juice into very small ice cube trays, they can be frozen.
Thanks for the lemon juice tip! Will have to try next time I make this soup.
I always add fresh lemon juice to my chicken noodle soup. I use clusky noodles but my recipe is very similar to yours. Everything you make looks delicious and your recipes always turn out good.
clusky noodles ROCK! Gram uses to make those when I was wee little tiger.
Omg! I've never done chicken noodle soup so I looked up some recipes since I started feeling ill with the flu. I followed your recipe and it came out sooo good! Thank you so much! Definitely subscribing on UA-cam and learning more recipes from you! 💜
Recipe looks good chicken noodle soup i just love. I can eat this everyday and never get enough. I will try this recipe thank you for makeing it easy to make.
I love lemon and cayenne in my chicken soup. I use orzo more than noodles these days. Dumplings egg noodles are great too. Now I want a bowl.
The lemon really does something! I always add some red chili flakes to my bowl also!
Now I'm making as often as I can
I tried it today and it was the best!!!! Thank you for this recipe!!!! Love from Russia ❤
I love Greek Lemon Soup - My grandfather came over from Greece!
CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP WITH A SODA ON THE SIDE (iykyk)
Thank you!!
Yum. I love soup, especially homemade soup. I can eat it every day.
One more thing John I like to cook my noodles separately and then place them on the bottom of the bowl and label the soup over them it cuts down on the amount of starch in the broth
Welcome 🌹
I do that too. Otherwise the leftovers turn into glue. The noddles suck up all the broth.
Great idea 💡. Thank you for sharing 💜
John I would LOVE more soup recipes AND a stock making video! Can’t wait for your book to arrive❤️
I LOVE soups too! Any time of the year. 😊
Fantastic soup. Made it last night
Wow you're literay going to be my go to cook. Soup was so delicious so easy my family is going to lovw it
I wa feeling under the weather and I had to go to work the next day.
Thank you John ❤ You are the absolute best!!! You made my night just watching you, making me laugh with your fun energy and fun science tips!
I made this soup and it was beyond delicious. Thanks John.
Happy New Year 🎉
Made this soup for my kids that were feeling under the weather. They ask for it on a regular basis now. Thank you John 🙏❤️
You make chicken soup the same way my mother made it. Over time, I've found I like chicken noodle soup with some tamari sauce over rice noodles. Kind of like Cup a Noodle only healthy.
Good morning every body every body have different recepiesd I like that different recepiesd favor
In addition to parsley, celery tops add tons of flavor, if they haven't been removed. I always try to buy celery that has the top leaves attached.
Yummy!
You make everything look so easy...and yes. I do want a chicken stock recipe. Thanks for being a terrific teacher!
Cheers,
