Potato soup is so good! My mom made the very best Potato soup. She added lots of bacon and ham and cheese... mmm i miss her so much. She passed away from Covid November 8th 2020. I've never had Potato soup that was better than hers. :(
Whoever says soup isn't a meal has never had a hearty homemade soup!! I am a person who makes tons of soup all year long. 😋 This soup looks soooo amazing
Yep , we make a lot of soup all year long too. Always trying new recipes. But it's officially soup making sweater whether now. I'm loving it. Giving the a/c a break. Happy cooking. 🔥🕊️♥️
Me and my lovely wife was watching this last night and I jokingly said "why aren't we eating that tonight instead of this? Today I came home to find her making this very recipe! It was wonderful, a definite keeper. Thanks for sharing!
I am in my mid-70s and am a very advanced amateur cook who has made potato soup for many years. Interestingly, the only differences between your recipe and mine are the use of golden potatoes and addition of sour cream near the end. Yesterday, I did it your way and must admit it was the BEST potato soup of my life! (I tasted the soup immediately before & after adding the sour cream and was amazed at the improvement!) My wife and two dear friends who joined us for lunch all raved about the soup as well. Thank you! Your approach to cooking and making videos is both easy going and easy to emulate. Kudos!
I have to say thank you for this recipe. I got so sick (lupus) and I almost passed away…. This soup saved me…. Really, SAVED MY LIFE! This was the only thing I could eat for a few months!!! I am all better now and making the soup again and wanted to thank you!!!
Thank you, dude, my wife, son & golden retriever, loved this!!! The dod didn't have very much but he kepted on drooling and begging. I just couldn't say no in the end.
I grew garlic for the first time this last winter/spring. I found it to be easier than onions. Best part is now I am self sufficient with garlic and get lots of varieties to choose from.
Soup is definitely a meal, I have a husband and 3 teenage boys and I serve them various soups with bread, buns or biscuits a couple times a week during the fall and winter.
I make this soup all the time. Looks good. I live alone and can't eat it all. I freeze it in serving sizes and find it reheats well. I love having soup in the freezer for days when I don't feel like cooking or I'm not feeling well. Love your channel.
Garlic isn’t too difficult-just plant the cloves NOW so they can vernalize (have to go through the winter cold temps) and they’ll come up in the spring. You can use the scapes to make pesto too!
I used scapes in my pesto in the summer - amazing! We had wild garlic growing but our maple tree completely blocked the sun, so we dried the cloves and planted them about 3 weeks ago - and they're coming up - about three inches tall now. We're so excited about next spring to see how they do!
Garlic is no more a problem than onions. End of Oct first of Nov plant Each Clove Root end down about an inch cover and put 3 to 4 inches of leaves over to protect them over winter. Harvest around June. Talk about FLAVOR.
Rodney, thank you for starting this off... I rarely comment on videos, but I had to tell John how EASY garlic is , yes, just like onions are! John, I plant them now, end of Oct. and mine do not sprout, but they will in the spring (Pacific Northwest) and are ready similar to onion time. Garlic is one of my favorite crops to grow! Commercial garlic from out of the US is fumigated to death, yuck! Try this, you will love having your own garlic braids! :D
I love homade hearty soups. Thank you for this recipe. I am making it tonight for dinner. My Army Veteran Husband loves Potato Soup. He is very ill with an inoperable Brain Tumor and stage 4 Parkinson's in a Hospital Bed and Wheelchair and I know he will love this. ❤
I cut my bacon before I cook it. I use the bacon grease to make a roux to thicken the soup. I’m planning on making potato soup tomorrow. I’m lazy so I don’t peel the potatoes. If the soup is too thin try adding some instant potatoes. Adding a bit at a time.
I always add chopped carrots and celery to mine and I use half and half instead of milk. I also use an entire pound of bacon in the soup and I use red potatoes. It comes out so extraordinary that we even have it on Christmas! A family favorite for sure! We serve it with garlic bread and it’s perfect!
I grew up with having soup before every meal growing up. Being Dutch it’s just what the do. My mom was the best soup maker and now my grown son has taken on that tradition. This recipe looks very good. I may try this it looks delicious. Thank you John I love your channel
I just went through your entire channel the other day and I was thinking “man this guy has everything except a potato soup recipe” you’re always my go to for recipes I thank you a bunch for everything! Can’t wait to try the soup😁
Sigh...sadly, some people do not appreciate how awesome soup is as a meal. In Winter time, soups are my family's favorite meals! Cook on John! Bring on the SOUP recipes!! Love your channel & awesome recipes!
YUMMY 😋😋😋. And I agree with you. Soup is definitely a meal, especially the way I make it. My broccoli cheddar soup has broccoli, potatoes, carrots, chicken and cheddar cheese and heavy cream and seasonings, which definitely makes it a meal. I make my potato soup like you do, except I use garlic & onion powder and add peas to it because my mom always did that. I do freeze my Broccoli Cheddar soup in large muffin cups then baggies and it’d great for when I want a small cup of it. Haven’t tried that with my Potato Soup though.
I haven't peeled a potato in at least a couple of years; the varieties available near me (not sure of their names) have the thinnest skin that they almost totally come off when you scrub them, and then whatever's left basically dissolves when you cook them. Excited to make this soup!
I've never peeled the skin of a potato. Just clean up the parts that need to be removed after giving them a 5 min soak then scrub them well. The best nutrients are in the skin.
I usually complain when the recipe is not in the presenter’s comments and I have to click into another site, however I was pleasantly surprised when I went to an article written by John. That was very nice like reading a letter from a friend about the soup.
I make soups often..with my potato soups (or chowder) I add about 2-4 c of fresh grated sharp and mild cheddar. Makes a wonderful creamy potato cheddar ( with ham) soup!
Garlic is very easy to grow. You can use the leaves and the scapes ( mini garlic in the flower head). I freeze garlic cloves whole. I have had great success drying it. This year I also roasted garlic cloves then squeezed the cooked garlic out of skin, froze some in cubes and have a jar in the fridge to spread on bread, steak or add to other cooking.
Your garden is everything 😍!! I'm still stuck there, your inspiring me to go play in the dirt!!! This really brought me back to my childhood. My Oma's garden was to die for, and crazy big and the variety of veggies was insane 😳. Not to mention the fruit.... makes it difficult to shop produce in the grocery store unless u buy organic. So gonna make this!!!
Homemade Soup is ALWAYS Wonderful....Filling and full of great vegetables, from onion, to tomato, potatoe to Chicken .....hundreds of ways to make soup...EVEN TACO Soup....YUM!!!
The best potatoes I’ve ever eaten are Klondike Rose potatoes. They’re so delicious, they don’t even need butter. Just a bit of salt and pepper. I don’t know how they would be in soup but I’m sure they’d be wonderful. Your soup looked SO good!!
When I was a tiny child, preschool age, I absolutely LOVED Graham Kerr, and his cooking show The Galloping Gourmet. I just realized I was watching your videos with the same pure enjoyment! Always a foodie, my mama would attest, Im also comforted by your presence, so thank you ❤️
I make a fantastic potato soup that’s an old family recipe. My Ukrainian grandfather made this all the time. It’s made with bacon too and you use the fat to make a rue. It’s just delicious.
I agree, soup is a meal! When I retired I decided to expand and perfect my soup repertoire. I've always made potato soup like my mom did which is similar to yours but will now try your version. I also agree that potatoes do not need to be peeled - just scrubbed! I put my soups in the oven at about 230 F for an hour or 2 (or in a crock pot) so I don't have to worry about them scorching, particularly important with those with milk in them. I do enjoy your channel!! Looking forward to more soup recipes!
I made this over the weekend. I had everything to make it already. My husband loved it. I did too. I will make this again. I am not a soup person. This is more of a meal than a soup. It was a quick soup too.
Made this lovely soup tonight! It was delicious and everyone enjoyed it! This will definitely be my go to potato soup recipe. You are definitely one of my absolute favorites! Please keep the wonderful and easy recipes coming! Thank you so very much!!!!
I just LOVE watching your channel!! No matter what I am thinking about cooking I ALWAYS go to see how you make it before I start!! You get right to the ingredients and your own twist on the recipe. Also, your kitchen is awesome!! Keep on doing what you do, your the best!! I'm just a grandma in Michigan and all I do is cook and bake almost every single day!
I made this yesterday and it was delicious. I tasted it and it tasted like the base for clam chowder so I dumped a can of clams in and cooked about 5 minutes. Yum. Topped with a pat of real butter. It didn't last long enough to refrigerate. Thanks.
My daughter and I made this and it was fantastic!! Thank you for the recipe! (in case it helps anyone else, we had to add a little more salt because we used stock with "no salt added")
I made this tonight. It was so delicious, and everyone in my family liked it! Yay! I'm not usually very good at following recipes exactly, so I substituted some of the potatoes for sweet white potato and cauliflower. I added some smoked paprika at your suggestion, and that was a great addition. On the table, for my family to help themselves with toppings was: a trio of three different types of grated cheese, spring onion, chorizo, bacon, and asparagus (it's Spring here in Australia). Definitely a keeper. Thank you!
I made this tonight with Russet potatoes that I didn't want to go to waste. It tastes amazing and is not grainy in texture. Maybe it's because I cooked them 5 mins longer in the bacon fat before adding broth - in an attempt to reduce boil time. Maybe I just got lucky this one time. Either way, I'm thankful. Great recipe!
Soups are my favorite thing to make, even in summer when my husband refuses to eat it because “it’s too hot for soup”. Whatever that means. 😂 More soup recipes, please.
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB! I have two additional thoughts, electric crock pot and use 1 additional potato, cube, boil and use an immersion blender to liquify and add to soup to make it thicker, if necessary! To be honest, I would ramp up the portions and use this in a restaurant and then say it was my recipe! I ONLY steal from the very best and I WILL BE buying this book!
I love golds. They are my favorite potatoes. I use them for everything. lol Even breakfast burritos. I hope my family gets me that book for my birthday. 🤞🏼 I always buy my produce from the farms. But it would be nice to have my own garden. Next years project. 😅
This looks AMAZING! I just received my copy of your book, and I'm SO excited for Thanksgiving break so I can go back home and make as many recipes as possible! I'm sure you've heard this before, but I got into baking from watching your videos during quarantine and now it's my favorite hobby 😊
Hello keep calm.... I noticed in your comment you received a book from this master chef. Where is it that you obtained the book. Am I not looking hare enough for the link on his page or what's up? Please help. Thank you, and God bless, mam.
I just made this and it's delicious! It didn't take long, it was fairly cheap to make, and the amount of flavour packed into this little soup is out of this world! Fantactic for meal prepping. The cleanup was also quick and easy. The video itself was informative, fun, and easy to follow. Thanks a bunch!
This recipe is as close as to how the recipe of a friend from 50 years ago that I've made is. The only thing I do differently is use 5 lbs. of potato's, I never added any flour, I use 3 cans of evaporated milk, but I like using the cream like you did instead, I think I'll try. I put in the whole 16 oz. of sour cream, as I make a bigger batch and then I will drop in sticks of butter. Which I've used 1 stick, or 2 sticks or 3 sticks of butter as it just depends on how rich you want your soup. Then lastly, I use hamburger a couple of pounds for the meat. I know I know it looks horrible but tastes so good. But all the recipes I've looked at use bacon so I'm going to try next time adding in a bunch of bacon to my hamburger, just to add more flavor. I just love all your videos and am learning to cook all over again in my old age. Thank you very much Preppy Kitchen. May you and your family have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful Happy New Year!
My 2nd recipe in 2 weeks. First being chicken marsala. Yumm. Having left over heavy cream and chicken stock is why i picked this. Needed 1 more cup of stock from freezer. I have molasses bread rising to have with. Soup is simmering. Am now retired and have the time to add new dishes weekly. Thank you. Great channel
My favorite soup! Thank you for the recipe and love the tip about boiling the soup in the past I have always done it so I can’t wait to try making without boiling, I know it will be amazing.
This channel is a godsend. I am OBSESSED with creamy soups, I'm actually making the chicken pot pie soup this weekend, homemade chicken pot pie is my favorite food. And don't even get me started on the desserts! You've literally given me back my inspiration
I just made this for dinner tonight and it was excellent!! I followed the recipe, except I excluded the sour cream, and it was still heavenly! Made some crispy homemade yeast bread to go with it. Also, I made his recipe for blueberry muffins, which are the bomb.. Yep, I'm buying his book!
John, I've tried several of your recipes and each one has been so outstanding and delicious! I just made the potato soup!! Hubby says it's better than his grandma and mom's!! Thank you for sharing with us! Definitely a keeper 🤟
As a vegetarian the one ingredient I cannot adequately replace is bacon fat. It’s a magical elixir. So I’ll be making this without, and probably subbing leeks for the onions as my gut likes them better. But I’ll make it with love and gratitude and it will delicious. Thank you for another great video and recipe, and for your gentle proselytizing about cooking and baking by weights. It drives me crazy now when I have to use volumes - so inaccurate, and the extra dished to wash!
When I was young, I would dred a soup dinner. To me, it a was not a meal. Now that I've matured to a much wiser age (😄) I can honestly say, I enjoy soup with a good bread or salad and I am totally satisfied. I can't wait to make this for dinner tonight! Thank you for sharing your yummy recipes!
Congratulations on your book making the New York Times best seller list, the honest way. You are a joy to watch and we love it how you manage a blooper. Refreshing.
I ordered your book just now and can't wait to receive it! Your gardens made me swoon. Soup is ABSOLUTELY a meal and I challenge anyone who says otherwise to a duel😂 love watching your channel. Thanks for the recipes 🙃
I have never made anything bad from watching this man. Thank you so much for teaching me ❤❤❤ I admire you for giving out your recipes because so many people won't.
I roast half my spuds and boil the other half using the roasted spuds for my chunks in my soup- maki g my Roasted baked potato soup and yes I use bacon and my own herbs and onions garlic from my garden. Yummy 😋
Holy cow. My mouth is *watering*, and due to health weirdness, that is saying something!!! This is going to be dinner TONIGHT! And I'm looking forward to cooking my way through your cookbook's soup recipes! 😍😍😍 (P.S. I *never* use pepper for anything! I am probably the biggest wimp in the world, but black pepper is too spicy for my mouth and belly! I do use white pepper in my lasagna, but otherwise, pepper is out! *Pepper*, not bell peppers, just to clarify! 😉) (Oh, also, cool tip: my husband lived in Hungary for just under two years, and he told me it's pronounced "paw-prika". I love that!)
A made this along with the video. It’s on the stove cooking as I’m typing this. Will edit when finished to give my review. Lol. Be right back. Edit: Uh! This is (bc I’m eating right now) is deeeelicious! The only thing I did different was crumble all the bacon up and stir it into the soup. But I added the cheese, sour cream and chives at the end and let me tell you, this is probably the best potato soup I’ve ever had. Thank you, thank you, thank you! ❤
Wait, the kitchen is actually his kitchen and not a studio?? I always thought that his filming in a studio cuz it looks TOO GOOD TO BE REAL!!! Wow his got my dream kitchen
2 of my absolute fave foods - potatoes & bacon ! Am definitely trying this for lunch since I have everything on hand, it’s cold outside & my husband LOVES soup ! Thanks 4 the recipe & u make everything look easy 2 make & delious!!!
Just made this soup and it was awesome. It was easy to make and best of all the fussy eater in my house loved it. Every recipe I have made of John’s has been great. He is my “go to” guy.
Why did I click on this video suggestion? Because the Meissen Blue Onion bowl captured my eyes! Stirred up tons of family memories in Germany! So, I watched the video! You make the soup exactly the same way I do, except I skip the sour cream. What a yummy soup. And it looks absolutely beautiful in the blue onion bowl
Ahhhh, potato soup!! 😍 I made a version of it from my Fannie Farmer cookbook, during my Peace Corps days. It’s nothing to this glam stew, but I added garlic on a whim (recipe didn’t call for it) and loved it nonetheless.
I've been making this for decades, it was my mom's recipe. Made it a couple days ago. I love it. Of course soup is a meal! My favorite is a pinch of saffron at the end
Soup is one of my favorite foods to eat, as well as make! When I was a kid, I always wanted soup (especially leftover soup) for breakfast. It got to the point where my mom took me to the pediatrician and told him, all she wants to eat is soup. Even for breakfast! He said, what is wrong with that? You can eat soup anytime, be happy she is eating healthy food. If she wants soup for breakfast, give it to her. I loved that doctor. And now, @65, I am still making and eating all kinds of soups- even for breakfast !
I made this soup today to thank my son for coming over to mow my lawn and he told me it's the best potato soup he's ever tasted. 😊
Great memory!!
That is so precious

My husband's sister had lupus she passed away 40 years ago.
I am happy to hear that you made it through being sick. I have been there myself. Ugh- Not fun.
I just made this soup. My wife and I agree that this is the best potato soup we’ve ever had! Thanks John, you’re a treasure.
This Pototo Soup is the best one I have had. Sauting the potatoes in the bacon grease puts over the top . GREAT SOUP. Family favorite

Yes I agree soup is a great meal! Bread and Cheese and a smidge of red wine 🍷 I’m in heaven!!!
I use them for everything. lol
Even breakfast burritos.
I hope my family gets me that book for my birthday. 🤞🏼
I always buy my produce from the farms. But it would be nice to have my own garden. Next years project. 😅
I have NEVER seen anyone more excited about something than this man is about potatoes
This looks AMAZING! I just received my copy of your book, and I'm SO excited for Thanksgiving break so I can go back home and make as many recipes as possible! I'm sure you've heard this before, but I got into baking from watching your videos during quarantine and now it's my favorite hobby 😊
Keep Calm and Dance On That was a very nice comment you left for John.
This recipe is as close as to how the recipe of a friend from 50 years ago
that I've made is. The only thing I do differently is use 5 lbs. of potato's,
I never added any flour, I use 3 cans of evaporated milk, but I like using
the cream like you did instead, I think I'll try. I put in the whole 16 oz. of
sour cream, as I make a bigger batch and then I will drop in sticks of
butter. Which I've used 1 stick, or 2 sticks or 3 sticks of butter as it
just depends on how rich you want your soup. Then lastly, I use hamburger
a couple of pounds for the meat. I know I know it looks horrible but
tastes so good. But all the recipes I've looked at use bacon so I'm going
to try next time adding in a bunch of bacon to my hamburger, just to
add more flavor. I just love all your videos and am learning to cook all
over again in my old age. Thank you very much Preppy Kitchen. May you
and your family have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful Happy New Year!
Not at all the same recipe. I think you changed everything in it
@@almaphillips3752 Do you have a problem with reading? She said it was her version of the video potato soup
Absolutely love potato soup , so comforting especially fall /winter so delicious ❤️ always reminds me of my mom that was one of her favorites too
I can’t cook anything. Followed this recipe and it came out perfectly. Best potato soup I’ve eaten.
This looks amazing!! It was a childhood favorite of mine so it’s comfort food ❤
Soup can totally be a whole meal in itself. When it is made well with lots of love to top it off. 🤤
I received my cookbook today can't wait to trying the recipes
I love soups on a cold day. This looks absolutely delicious. 🙂❤️
I just cooked this and it turned out really good. Didn't follow the directions exactly but, it was still good.
I made it tonight and OMGOODNESS !! It was The Best !
Thank you
I have never made anything bad from watching this man. Thank you so much for teaching me ❤❤❤ I admire you for giving out your recipes because so many people won't.
Followed this recipe step by step and it turned out amazing!! Thank you!! ❤
Yes he’s really good I followed his macaroni cheese it was worth it.I will be making this soon never cook this yet .
I love potato soup, I'm going to have to try this recipe 😋
I always fry my potatoes first. Holds them together and such a flavorful soup. It's almost at like potatoes with gravy on them.
Omggg!! This looks so good❤️ I love how you cook.
Just made this soup and it was awesome. It was easy to make and best of all the fussy eater in my house loved it. Every recipe I have made of John’s has been great. He is my “go to” guy.
Oh my goodness I have never made potato soup but I do love my soups I make I most certainly gotta make this one thank you for sharing😋
Looks so good! ♥️👍♥️
Seriously! The fresh onion won’t make me “cry”? Love potato soup!
I have the identical pepper grinder! 🥰 This soup looks so gorgeous, think I’ll make it this weekend. Thank you
I have the identical water he washed his hands with !
Soup is my favorite meal….thanks for this great recipe. I’m buying your cookbook!
I made this for my family and they loved every spoonful of it
Ahhhh, potato soup!! 😍 I made a version of it from my Fannie Farmer cookbook, during my Peace Corps days. It’s nothing to this glam stew, but I added garlic on a whim (recipe didn’t call for it) and loved it nonetheless.
Love the taste of garlic I’m a lover garlic 🤣🤣
I've been making this for decades, it was my mom's recipe. Made it a couple days ago. I love it. Of course soup is a meal! My favorite is a pinch of saffron at the end
Hello John potato soup 🍲 😋 yummy
Soup is one of my favorite foods to eat, as well as make! When I was a kid, I always wanted soup (especially leftover soup) for breakfast. It got to the point where my mom took me to the pediatrician and told him, all she wants to eat is soup. Even for breakfast! He said, what is wrong with that? You can eat soup anytime, be happy she is eating healthy food. If she wants soup for breakfast, give it to her. I loved that doctor. And now, @65, I am still making and eating all kinds of soups- even for breakfast !
