Oh my gosh you have no idea how much I love actually seeing that someone besides me likes quilts with no batting!
I have done a lot of patchwork over my sewing years but never call myself a quilter because I simply cannot be bothered to follow rules😂.
I love the look of edge to edge quilting but would never ever personally use a quilt with batting … they are much to firm for me as I want my covers to melt and conform to my body shape.
I don’t use interfacing in T-shirt “quilts” because I like a little stretch!
100% cotton? Puleese. I love going to the thrift store, finding used shirts in all sorts of fabrics and textures then making simple patchwork for babies. It is so awesome to watch a baby sitting or laying on a texture “quilt” and touching all the different fabrics. The light of discovery in their eyes is absolutely priceless.

Yes! Sometimes I like to use a sheet of cotton flannel as a batting. It gives more weight without too much fluff. But I also love just 2 layers of fabric quilted together ❤ and some people don’t “get it”. Nice to find someone else that does! 😊

Thanks for posting this; my daughter sleeps ´hot´, so she didn´t want any batting in the quilt I´m making. I thought that was pretty radical, but finally decided I´d just try to make only the quilt top with backing fabric. Glad to know it will work just fine. Cheers!

I 100%agree!! I made a set of placemats that I put too much batting in!! I'm thinking of removing it, and adding borders to make them larger, since they are kind of small for placemats.
I like to use colorful, #8 or #10 crochet thread to quilt with anymore. Once, a clerk asked what I was going to crochet, with so many different colors. I told her I use it for quilting. She then tells me that it will Not hold up, and insisted I go back and get proper quilting thread! I told her to look at the thickness of this thread - it gives me the look I'm going for, and it's for a toddler's quilt! It will be just fine!😊 Then asked her to please ring my thread up. She kept trying to page the fabric dept to show me where quilting thread was. I asked her not to bother them, I already knew its location.😊
There Are no rules for quilting. We all need to make quilts the way We like them, and not let the quilt police/experts dictate how we 'should' make Our own items. 😏

I am a new quilter, busy with my second quilt, queen sized and totally hand sewn. My quilts are reversible, irregular blocks, with stories, photos and memories and hand sewn and hand quilted. I have learned so much from so many people on UA-cam and I have asked many questions. Many have answered my questions patiently but there were a few who said I couldn’t do certain things or things wouldn’t work out. But I tried. And I succeeded. I took a class at my local quilt shop because I didn’t know how to cut a really really long bias strip and they helped me. I took along my current quilt project which is a T-shirt/hoodie photo quilt. They also said I was such an inspiration to them because they felt that they were actually constrained a bit because they followed rules. And there was I, really really inexperienced, using different fabrics, hand sewing and doing so well.

There are no rules! There never were. Quilting began as a functional item, warmth. There were no rules. I was once at a quilt guild, where a quilt shop owner gave a talk and had so many rules on quilting that we were all kind of glaring at each other across the tables in shock. After she left, I opened my mouth first and said “ I have never ever heard so many rules on quilting in my life. As far as I’m concerned, they take all the fun out of quilting. “. Absolutely everybody agreed. Creativity and expressing ourselves is what it’s all about, not following somebody’s rules. Go forth and enjoy.😊❤

    • @wendywilson1736
      @wendywilson1736 6 місяців тому +3

So glad you went ahead and tried your way, anyway!! Some "rules" are meant to be 'broken'.😂
I like to quilt with crochet cotton thread. It's thicker than "proper quilting thread" as some expert customers and clerks have called it. One at my favorite craft store has tried to "educate" me that "crochet thread is for crochet, quilting thread is for quilting, and we "aren't supposed" to substitute one for the other!! Crochet thread just won't do! It won't hold up! Heaven forbid if you dare try!"
Wait....what? That thicker thread 'won't hold up' to what quilting thread is expected to? My grandson's quilt has held up just fine to any of the rigors a young boy can put his quilt through.😅
And I will continue to use crochet thread to quilt my quilts.😊 I like the look, my hands don't tolerate doing tiny stitches, and I get them done faster with big stitch quilting. The thread is better proportional to the stitches I like to do.
So, we do what works for each of us. And, we are allowed to enjoy doing it Our way.☺️

@@maureenkearns5376that makes me sad. I work at a quilt shop, and we tell people all the time, we don't like the quilt police. There are certain things that should be consistent. You should have a 1/4" seam, (or at consistant size seam) and your seams should straight. Beyond that? Have fun!!! Quilts are an expression of creativity and love! I absolutely love it when a customer shows me a way I've never seen before 🥰

Thanks so much! I just finished a memory quilt for my daughter. The quilt top by it self was very heavy with so much embellishment involved, and i didn't want to add a layer of batting which would make it crazy heavy. However, my seams between panels were so bulky that using a sheet only might make it uncomfortable. I came up with an idea to baste STRIPS of batting over the seams. So far so good and now i can use the bed sheet as backing without adding all the extra weight of a full layer of batting. Thanks for the extra inspiration!

I hate batting so I've been wondering if I could just use cotton sheeting instead. It's so great to actually see beautiful quilts you've made with no batting or even any other middle layer. That blue summer quilt is really lovely.

I have been quilting for many many years. I could never afford the batting, so I left it out. Staying warm is about layers anyways, so I figured, light blankets, just use 2 or three. I was born and raised in California. Who needs batting in California? Not me.

However I have been disappointent with the bulkiness and stiffness of the finished article so I am so glad I don't have to use the batting (or wadding as we call it over here!.) So looking forward to my future projects! Thank you profoundly!

I don't use batting. For one thing I live in a very hot country. Karachi, Pakistan. I have been just putting a thin cotton sheet in between and then my backing. So easy to do also. I've made baby quilts too. Don't want to cuties to get over heated.

I often use thin batting or the heat resistant one on kitchen mats and runners. But I live in the desert and often want a throw when others want the AC colder than I like. I just use lightweight cotton flannel for the backing. And I also call them my summer quilts.

I have been doing my own thing about to 'bat or not to bat." If I use "minky" or fleece for the backing, I don't use batting. I don't for table runners or such things, such as wall hangings. For those I do like a bit of stiffness, so I use polyester felt as the "batting." It doesn't shrink but helps the patchwork stand out better. In India for the kantha quilts (made from old saris, both cotton and silk) use old sheets and pillowcases for 'batting." For summer quilts, sometimes uses gauze (single or double) for backing is wonderful as it provides a crinkly feel on the back. The Sew Channel used fleece throws from the General Dollar to make the backing for a quilt. Much cheaper than the Minky brands as the fabric store. She used no batting.

I have several summer spreads with no batting I grew up in Fl No AC then ! A sheet was all you needed! My grandmas and aunts made quilts with thin Mountain Mist batting that they split into 2 layers They only used one layer per quilts! So much easier to hand quilt! I have a log cabin top to finish and it doesn't need a batting either. Its nap or throw size just needs a small border and a back .Ill just tack it and machine the border like I did the last one They wash nicely and the one everybody wants if they aren't feeling well ! I dont compete and I do what I like ! Im the kid that colored Santa in plaid pajamas ! 😂

I was looking for a quilt pattern no batting. I have heard of summer quilts but never made one. I live in the Midwest so quilts are needed. However, I am making quilts as a mission project and they specifically say no batting, no ties. So perhaps, in warmer countries, this type of quilt is comforting yet cool for their hot weather. Thanks!

My sewing machine has a small throat area so I am not fond of quilting anything large or with thicker batting. This looks sew freeing, and it is nice to have a lightweight quilt too. Do you connect the back and front of the quilts other than the binding? It looked like maybe you did some "quilting" but maybe not. Do you like tying quilts? I did a combination of machine quilting and hand tying the last quilt that had thicker 80/20 batting.

Hi Carol I do quilt it, Im a simple stitch in the ditch kinda quilter. you can get as fancy as you want or as minimal as you want. I have another video on no batting, no binding runner where you see more of the technique I use. I have also used hand quilting / big stitch embroidery too. Its fun to just do what you want to do without too many restrictions :)
