  • Another QAYG option on my channel. I’m not an expert quilter. Just someone who wants to do it so I’m learning as I dive into it. I used about 2-1/4 yards of backing fabric and found the darling dog print at Hobby Lobby. The other fabrics were in my stash and I bought three fabrics that were 1/2 yard measurement. The batting was 45”x60” or baby sized. Completed quilt measured 40”x50”.
    Measurements are as follows:
    Batting, 11-1/4" squares, 20 for a baby quilt
    Back, 11-1/4" squares, 20 for a baby quilt
    middle square is 2-1/2"
    Two 2-1/2" squares to flank the middle square
    Two 2-1/2"x6-1/2" strips to frame the middle square
    Two 2-1/2"x6-1/2" strips to flank the frame (square)
    Two 2-1/2"x10-1/2" strips to frame the frame (square)

    I like watching you put this quilt together. Your voice is mild and easy to listen to. I always stress about what fabric to use and what I need to buy to make it. I have to learn to just use what I already have. I haven't made a quilt since I was a teenager in the early 70's. I didn't know how to do it then and I just put it together and knotted the corners. My youngest son loves that quilt even though it needs mended. I've put safety pins the hold it together where the stitching has come undone. Thank you so much for your honesty and homey quilt that you've made. You're a treasure. 🙂

    a leader and ender fabric piece will help avoid the machine eating your fabric, when sewing blocks together i'll use the block as my leader for the next block...always leader and ender fabric will avoid this problem...very cute fabric, nicely done. it's good to include what you call mistakes because we're all making them, part of sewing 😊 thanks for sharing. i used QAYG for a queen size, it was still too much to handle, never again.

    I had to make another comment. Yesterday, I used your method to figure out where to make the last miter to join the binding at the end to come out the right length. It worked! First time I didn't practically ruin my fabric by having to unpick and resew until it came out right. I didn't get it quite on the first try, but more quickly than usual. In fact I gave up on this way of joining and just went with a straight line. Thanks to you, I tried again and it worked! Thank You!

    I would tape paper together or cut a bigger freezer paper square the same size as backing/ batting measurements and measure where the center small square and cut a square hole out of it. Use this a a centering template! Just lay it over the batting/ backing and lay in your center fabric square, pin in place and lift off the template. Simple fast accurate place,ent with out any fuss. Happy quilting.

    Thanks so much for the video. This method is so good for people who only have home sewing machines and don't have a large area, in the throat of the machine for all the quilt fabric, when quilting. I use hot glue to keep my rulers from slipping. You put a dot of hot glue on the back of your ruler and then firmly press it down on parchment paper to flatten it out. Do this in several places on your ruler. It can be easily taken off, if you don't want it there. It dries clear and will keep your ruler from slipping. I tried those round dots, they sell. They came off and also caught the edges of my fabric. I wasn't at all pleased with them.

    Thank you for sharing. One of the reasons fabric move during cutting is the way in which we put our hand on the ruler. From my experience if you lay your hand flat on the ruler, than there is no traction on the ruler to keep it firm. With a flat hand on the ruler it also means that the sweat/moisture from the hand makes the ruler slippery and therefore unstable. The best way to hold the ruler in place is to have your hand as if it is crawling along. With only your fingertips touching the ruler but the pressure is applied from your shoulders, not the wrist. You would do this simultaneously as you are moving the cutter. I hope this is helpful and you will give it a try.

    • @jerib1576
      @jerib1576  Рік тому +1

      Math and I don’t always get along but I went back and looked in the description box of that video. I had 20 blocks and they were 11-1/4” square before attaching them together. The finished quilt was 40”x50”. So each block was 10” square when attached. So for 60”x90” I’m thinking that you need 9 rows of 6 blocks each (6 across, 9 down)so 54 blocks? If you wanted to mix it up a bit you could do 8 rows of 5 across then do a 5” border all around. You’d make a border in the same way, quilting it together then attaching it the same only it’s longer. Give yourself a seam allowance so cut the border top, batting and back an inch or more bigger allowing for fold over to attach on one side. The other side will have the binding on it. Good luck to you on this project.
