  • Supposedly one of the harder hoyas to take care of-I had an initial cutting that didn't survive, but luckily this plant has been thriving for even more months now since I initially filmed it. It's also putting out quite a bit of new growth in the winter too. It is #269 on "365 Days of Plants"...rightfully getting its time in the spotlight!
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

I have the full head of hair version,😁 it grew so well the first year i had it, that i sold countless rooted cuttings on ebay.,but she never flowered, and when visiting the nursery where i bought her, the owener advised me to stop watering, this she said would force flowers, also the ones she still had were all in a north facing window(in full flower) mine is in a south facing glass extension which does get shade too... I did water her as i thought I was too late to force flowers.
Just to say that I live in the south of France.
My advise on this beautiful soft hoya :-
When taking cuttings, take from top and divide the stem into 6" lengths, if you take half way down the plant starts to grow "sideways" from the wound, and it doesnt hang so well 🤔
Soil is well draining and as yet only worm compost fertiliser. (once)
She gets mealies from time to time but i can see them quickly and squish them!
I have been amazed at how easy she's been, but i am not a fussy gardener, all my plants get water when I'm able to water, probably once a week, and i only water when leaves get "bendy" 😅
Love watching your channel Summer, and have just been given your book as birthday present..
    🎁😁

Thanks for featuring this Hoya. It’s really hard to get care tips for this particular plant. I can attest to this plant being finicky. It does not tolerate being overwatered at all. I started with a very full plant and am down to a handful of strands but I think I have finally figured out the care. I have a humidifier running next to it all day and it is under lower watt grow light and is putting out a ton of new growth. 🤞🏻I also repotted it in fine orchid bark so it doesn’t have its roots sitting in water.

Oh wow, I rooted a strand and am also using (extra) fine orchid bark and it's putting out new growth :) I agree, it likes it.

I’m surprised people have issues with this plant! I got a huge one a few years ago and it’s one of the easiest plants I have. It grows in the spring and summer and blooms once a year. There was little information about it when I got it, so I treated it like other hoyas and watered it very little. That did not make it happy at all however, the leaves shrivel up and “close” and if you wait too long, it’ll start dropping them. So, I give it a nice soak whenever I see the leaves start to change.

This one imho is actually quite easy to grow, even easier to propagate (adventious roots grow long enough to put in soil within a 3-4 weeks of water propagation). Doesn´t need too much light - mine grows well in semi-shade. Be careful with watering though, the soil needs to dry out between waterings so you might consider a well draining or even better terracotta pot. During the growing season I furtilise it boldly like twice a month and it grows like crazy. Maybe it´s just me but I´d say this plant is one of the best for beginners - just don´t water it too much too frequently;)

You must have ideal conditions, I bought a rootless cutting and after waiting about 6 weeks most pieces I planted rotted away. I have just one piece that put out a new leaf so I think it has rooted. I think it's going to be quite hard to grow and I had heard not to let it dry out, so there is quite confusing information out there.

I rotted out the roots on mine within weeks of getting it. It rooted up readily in LECA & I’ve been growing it in passive hydroponics with an organic fertilizer since. It hangs over a humidifier in a western window. I do live up in northern NY, so I think it enjoys the coolness of hanging next to the window. Currently putting in its first peduncle (only 3 after being rerooted)!

Summer I live in Germany and they are a bit finicky. The main problem are mealy bugs. I place mine in the shower drench her once a month. When propagating I cut pieces at the air roots and stick them in the soil making sure to keep the new cuttings moist. Mines started growing crazy after the mealy bug invasion. I let her dry out before watering. Thanks for the video.

It makes me feel really good that I can actually grow this! And mine is thriving!! Mine is also in my northeast window, hanging a couple feet away from my humidifier which is set to 65%. I've only watered it twice since I got it in February, and it's still in it's 4 inch growing pot. Mine also grows super fast, it's doubled in length since I first got it!! My favorite Hoya for sure!!

I have this plant and I’d say it’s one of the heartier Hoya that I own. I think it’s pretty easy to care for. I did import it from the UK about 10 months ago. Mine I keep on my balcony (I’m in Los Angeles) and I only bring it in when it drops below 45.
I find it’s roots to be quite hearty. When I got mine I untangled each vine and they bounced back with a quickness. It did go dormant but now I’m getting growth. I’ve propagated this thing almost a dozen times and haven’t lost a vine. I stick it in a small pot of my Hoya mix and spray bottle it everyday. It will look sickly until roots grow and you’ll notice the difference. Took about 2 months for roots. Once roots establish it will take a while for vine growth.
I don’t overwater. But I do water enough to cover the top soil then I leave it alone. I do get a mealybug from time to time on it so I have a Castile soap water mix I use.

Mine is growing under a growlight in an airy mixture of orchid bark, black gold potting mix and perlite and has put out tons of new growth this winter season. I also water mine more frequent than most of my succulent like Hoyas. I do this thing called the flick test on one of the leaves. If it does not spring back up quick enough when your press the tip of one of the leaves then it’s time to water.

  • @mysticshining

So glad you showed this Summer :D I finally got a 5-strand rooted cutting shipped in it's pot (and it survived, the first one she shipped didn't except for one strand which I finally got to root in extra-fine bark, perlite mix). When it first arrived I put it in a frosted glass south facing window, lightly watered (I never let it go bone dry), misted 2x/day. After about 4 weeks, I saw new growth, yay! Then I saw someone who put theirs in direct sun and it looked fantastic, so I started slowly acclimating it to SOME full sun, slightly filtered and it seems to be thriving... 3-4 new growths, old leaves plumped up. I added some bonsai mix for more aeration and I mist 1-2x/day. I mist/water with cal/mag solution too sometimes.
Super interesting observation reg. the cutting that rooted in bark: You could also try rooting by placing an entire strand just on the surface of the pot (which I did) and each node made roots. It's taken a couple months but I finally have new leaves forming at the end. Also, it's in a clear plastic orchid pot so I could observe root growth and moisture. It's roots are growing very similar to how i see my orchid's roots grow, sometimes first meandering over the top of the pot before it decides to go down into the pot, also noticed aerial roots just sticking in the air. The pot also has a plastic dome to hold in moisture for now.

I woke up this morning with a new sense of vigour. Ultra excited about moving onto my next site, a huge allotment community up next to where my parents are buried. I want a big chunk of it and I want 2 people with the same passion and drive that I have to help me. It will take 2 years and I wont touch the actual site until every detail has been meditated upon and perfected. 40 beds will do, all netted and conditioned for light, heat, wind, drainage, ph, etc etc etc. Im excited Summer, this is going to be a massive undertaking but im going to do it and im going to teach the needy and feed my family premium produce. So that means, in the 2 years id imagine im going to learn a hell of a lot, especially watching you, as you are on my journey with me, up the garden path. Hoya linearis, looks like Brocco that gone to seed.

I water them when the pot gets a bit lighter, meaning the soil is almost dry. I kept them in their original pots and are facing 3 feet away a west window. I do bath them once in a while which they seem to like. I have seen 3 tiny flower babies but it is now autumn time here and they fall off. Hopefully more will come in Summer next yr.

It was about to flower just before this winter but didn’t and I think that was because of the darkness (I live in Sweden).

I've my hoya for about 1.5 yrs now. It hangs about 2-3 meters from a south, south-west facing window. Only gets a bit of direct sunlight in winter, but a lot of indirect light the rest of the year. I let mine dry out and then fully water it, in summer probably every week..in winter a lot less, don't always fully water in winter either..it tends to be too much. I spray it with an orchid fertilizer every week except in winter, seems to work really well and fertilize most of the time when I fertilize my other plants (not always), I'm not too careful about it 😅 I live in West-Europe.

I live in the UK and have one of these plants. According to our RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) if you give it bright light and ocassional direct sun it will produce waxy white flowers. It definitely does like being misted regularly and when humidity is high or when regularly misted will grow much faster. As you say you can propagate by cutting midway between the leaves on the stem and push the leaf node into the soil to grow. Best to use cactus compost mixed with perlite. Hope that helps. They practically care for themselves like cats. My hoyas thrive in filtered light and moderate humidity. I enjoy the plump vibrant foliage. I monitor for signs of stress. They like compact roots. I have rarely fertilized and I have never repotted. If they begin to look stressed, I reduce sun exposure, dump standing water from the decorative holding pots and finger comb the spent foliage away. Keep an eye, but treat them like cats. They are practically no fuss. Enjoy🌱🌱🌱

It does not. Misting only raises the ambient humidity about 1 percent and only until the water evaporates. It’s pointless to be honest. Also you run the risk of water droplets sitting on the leaves and causing fungus. Even if you don’t get a fungus it’s not worth all the trouble for none of the benefits ppl claim it does.
